Too little too late........to save Mr. Obama in his re-election campaign. However, another ATTEMPT at getting some VOTES.
Waiting for the Left to respond to this "attempt" to go against their agenda of attacking the rich and what it will mean to their Class Warfare tacftic.
I thought Obama was against big greedy corporations? I thought obama was for the working man, and against greedy corporations with their huge profits?
I thought these rich corporations weren't paying enough in taxes? Now he wants to give them a tax break?
So I guess Obama has been lying this whole time, and is for big corporations and its obvious he is looking for money for his campaign chest by giving greedy corporations tax breaks.
Talk about a flip flopper!!!! Obama wants nothing but more money for his reelection campaign and doesn't care about the working middle class or poor at all!! Obama is a liar!! YOu have lost my vote!!
It's about time. It's just a shame that Obama is waiting until now ---- during his re-election campaign ---- to (appear to) do something for once that is correct.
It's just a shame, because Obama, and seriously people ---- ALL OF YOU REALLY KNOW that TAXES HAVE TO BE LOWERED in order for REAL GROWTH TO OCCUR IN THE ECONOMY.
Then, imagine if Obama really pulls this off (not because he wants to, remember, he only wants the votes). Watch him do this and it really starts to work (because it will), causing the economy to kick-start and much more revenue to start pouring into the government.
Of course, if all this were to happen, he obviously would discontinue immediately and go back to the 35% level after the election, because, after all, he could care less what the voters think after election <---- TRANSLATION ----> he has no more use for you, after his brainwashing effect on you has worn off <----> that made you vote for him.
All of your right wing morons talking about Obama being against big businesses and this being a re-election ploy are completely clueless. While the top Corporate tax rate is 35%, most of the "big businesses" don't pay that rate due to loop holes, etc. Lowering the tax rate will help medium and smaller sized businesses that can't play the games of big business and therefore are at a disadvantage. Lowering the top Corporate tax rate will make those businesses paying the top rate more competitive domestically and internationally. But by all means right wing schmucks, keep being delusional with your hatred for Obama. Stay small.
Keep telling yourself that, this is nothing but a re-election ploy. Just like all the HC waivers and the reversal of his decision concerning religious organizations being forced to offer free contraceptives. The man has no backbone and looks only to where the money is for his campaign. We have had 4 years of the left telling us that taxes needed to be raised (ignoring the spending) and now 9 months before the election our President is saying we need to lower taxes? WTF?
Gotta love it! The 'conservatives' have been harping on the corporate tax rates for how long now? Now that the President appears to be on board - it is a bad idea?
Look, Obama has been pushing for reforming the tax code since last summer's debt limit fiasco. Reforming the tax code is part of the Bowles-Simpson plan (yep, the one that 'conservatives' claim the President has forgotten).
Are the Republicans going to choose to obstruct one of their own 'core principles'?
Corporate Rates are yet another Red Herring for the Politically Polarized Sheep. Almost no Company pays 35%, in fact, I will bet the proposal will look something like this. 25% with Loopholes.
The Republicans will decline this offer by making up some excuse, when in reality, they realize most are not paying 25% now, thus making it a Tax Hike...
Hmmm...seems you kinda forgot that Wall Street just took 10 trillion dollars and 10 million jobs out of the economy. But you socialists for the rich just kind of ignore the middle class so it's no surprise you hate Obama.
Are you serious? Why the @!$%# was it the end of the world when the R's wanted to do it? It was all about money and catering to the rich and babies would be sacraficed at the altar every time the Republicans mentioned that.
What happened to Obama's mantra to "pay your fair share"? Guess that only applies to individuals, not corporations, who he's trying to court for campaign contributions.
Obama is the worst president I can recall... I guess that's what we get for electing someone who never lead or managed anything in his life, on a scale larger than a class schedule as an instructor. All he's done for the past three years is talk a good talk, but clearly he can't "walk the walk". And the fool has the audacity to tell a reporter that "he's getting better at this" as time goes on. We surely don't need, or want, "Presidential Apprentice."
Thank goodness this failed attempt at "diversity" and white guilt over racial discrimination will be over in 12 months when Obama is replaced in January 2013.
Mr. Obama, in November, the American People will say with a loud voice "You're FIRED!"
Wait one cotton picking minute here, if a republican wants lower corporate taxes, it's corporate welfare, but if a democrat does the same, it's sound economic principle for helping the economy out of the slump that was in no small part, created by democrat policies to begin with. Which is it? Does Obama have a clue? I would actually support him on this. I mean even a broken clock is right twice a day.
help the country? the corporate tax rate is already between 9% and 14% effectively. lower it to what, nothing? that 35% is just on paper, everyone knows that.
As long as it doesn't cost a dime to the wealthy, stimulates the economic activity, create jobs and increases the tax base, America will win. Now let's see what that is going to look like after amendments and how long it will take to pass Congress.
Oh, it will get through the House and stopped in the Senate, just as occured with the other 22 tax cutting bills, the budget, and the HCL repeal. Obama can call for it all he wants, and because it doesn't pass the senate, he gets credit for trying to cut.
ironic how just last week he was still saying the corporations and the rich need to pay their fair share, and now he wants to cut the corporate rate. Priceless - except the bulk of the people don't seem to notice, don't seem to care.
I am for lowering the corporate tax rate because then prices on goods and services would go down. Corporations do not pay the taxes. The consumers do through higher prices.
That's a fallacy. Competition still drives prices and taxes come very low on that ladder. Don't forget it's a global economy. The fact that the US has the 2nd highest rate in the OECD doesn't mean a thing. It's the rate that's collected that counts. After all the tax breaks, etc; in the US Tax Code the US is next to last in collection rates. Big Oil's collection rate is down around 9%. GE, after one of its largest profits, paid ZIP in income taxes. There are billions upon billions that are owed the US by deadbeat corporations. And then there's all that cash sitting offshore that hasn't even been counted. Lowering corporate rates without overhauling the entire code is ludicrous at best and criminal at worst. It's like trickle-down economics. The only boats that rise with the tide are 80 ft. yachts. C'mon, folks, do your homework.
So, corporations would lower prices because they are paying less in taxes?
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.
I would, however, suggest that any savings corporations might realize from a lower tax rate will only result in corporations reporting greater profits.
I agree with lowering corporate taxes and closing loopholes. In fact, as has been mentioned above, this is a global economy. Just like states compete with other states for business relocations, we should be enticing corporations to come to America. Even if we offered 0 taxes to manufacturing corporations, the revenue gained through the newly employed would offset that. There would be an increase in social security taxes because people would be employed. Nearly 100% of all salaries would be returned to the economy that will create more demand. I don't think anyone from either party would disagree that we are a consumer based economy. Hell, I'm for giving car companies and the steel industry 0 taxes so that the cost could be lowered and we could better compete with other foreign products. But, that probably wouldn't happen because employees and shareholders would believe they were entitled to the profit as opposed to passing it on to the consumer.
Obama outlined tax measures - including closing tax loopholes for companies that move facilities and jobs overseas - in his State of the Union speech in January, and will lay out principles for revamping corporate taxes by the end of February, a senior administration official said.
From seed article.
I agree with disincentives for outsourcing, and I would go as far as to say TAX outsourcing. On the other hand, provide tax incentives for "insourcing" jobs and creating American jobs that stay in America.
The largest and richest corporations are generally not paying anything close to 35 percent.
12 Corporations Pay Effective Tax Rate of Negative 1.5% on $171 Billion in Profits
And these are 12 of our largest and richest corporations.
Corporations after tax loopholes in America pay nothing even close to 35 percent. Japan and Germany have been paying 32 to 34 percent in corporate taxes with no loopholes. They are paying the biggest business taxes in the world. And there are basically no complaints.
In spite of the right wing crazies who call him a "socialist" he's really a Republican and this is a standard Republican idea.
Both Republican and Democratic administration have been cutting the corporate tax rate for a long time and for the average american things have been getting worse.
It won't generate jobs but it will do what it's really intended to do: Generate campaign cash from corporations to Obama's reelection campaign and transfer more wealth from the poor and middle class to the richest people in the country.
I fully support lowering our too high corporate tax rate as long as most exemptions and deductions are eliminated. We currently have a sucker's game, where those least able to afford it have to pay the highest rate but the companies with connections or staffs of lawyers and accountants pay little if any in taxes. That's just not right, and fixing it will not only result in increased corporate tax revenue but increased individual tax revenue because those firms on the fence on hiring will have the means to do so through paying lower, more reasonable tax rates !!
Lowering corporate "and" small businesses tax is something that's been on the back of my mind since the recession. Coming from one of the highest taxed states in the Union I've seen from myself that business will look for bargains elsewhere, but that falls to the arrogance of the blue bloods within the state.
Giving the ultra wealthy tax breaks to increase job growth is a bunch of crap. Nobody will spend their personal income to hire someone else.
I think for once Obama has steered himself in the right direction.
I am for lowering the corporate tax rate because then prices on goods and services would go down.
I suppose you believe in the tooth faerie too! If it passes the only thing that would happen is the corporate executives back checks would increase. Since corporations are now people according to republicans then they should pay the same tax rates as humans in the same income bracket.
Google Reason Magazine, then Warren Buffett: Baptist and Bootlegger. It shows it is all a scam. Buffett buys stock, then lobbies for bailouts and makes a ton of money. They are all in bed with each other.
The typical small business pays their taxes as personal income rates. They are either organized as LLCs, S Corps or partnerships. The article is about C Corps which runs on a different tax system. Lowering the C Corp rates will do nothing to create jobs, will do nothing to change the offshoring trend and it will not lower prices.
Any savings from lower taxes will be pushed down to the bottom line and handed out as stock dividends, stock buybacks and/or bonuses to executives. Nowhere in that mix are increased investment in our labor force, fixing our infrastructure and educational system or sharing the savings with consumers on products/services.
Every time they pull this political stunt: lower our taxes but you can get rid of our loopholes (or maybe someone else's loopholes). Wait 10 years and the rates STAY low BUT the loopholes are all BACK thanks to the Congressional LOBBIES.
The right has been saying that this needs to be done for years now. Yet, everytime this is proposed by the right, the liberals all scream about corporations not paying their fair share and the right being puppets of corporations. Now, Obama sweeps in, does exactly what he and the left haver been whining about for the last 4 years and all the sheep liberals jump on board an praise Obama and then say the GOP has still done nothing. Could you all be any more hypocritical!
This is at least the second or third "change" or mandate by Obama that seems to have been called for and talked about by Republican presidential candidates.
Why is Obama only doing seemingly productive/rational things NOW after three years of treading water and ruffling up things to no communal avail (other than mroe financial burdens)?
"We must PASS the bill to find out whats in the bill"..........spoken by a liberal genius(idiot).............to liberal followers that apparently could care less what the specifics are as long as it means free govt stuff.
Buying votes with kick backs is the basis for the largest block vote liberals have.
Their other go to block vote is the bleeding hearts who are well intended but grossly misguided.
Then you have the ELITIST liberals who control NYC and Hollywood, the jewish media empire that buys their politicians and uses their liberal status as a PR representative because it is the cheapest PR available. They have enough money to afford to be liberal; in fact it is a great deal for them financially b/c they get kickbacks as well as look like nice liberal tax giving rich folks.......even though it is a PR SCAM!!!!!! They have teams of tax accountants and tax lawyers and insider info to make sure their liberal front is well protected. Sure they do some charity but mostly with other peoples money of course. Non jew elite rich also play this liberal game. Buffet for example.
These media liberals also assure their candidate gets elected by brain washing moron sheeple that watch TV and really are too uninformed on 90% of issues to vote.
Thats the basis of the liberals. Manipulating the economy to improve close to the election was part of the plan.......But they pissed off Israel, not a smart move. Wait and see.
DB, if the tax code is rewritten to write out every loop hole and every gimmick used by Corporations to hide their money or pass the taxes on to their customers we will actually take in more tax dollars when we do now.
There were two choice:
1. Raise corporate taxes and leave the tax code alone
2. Lower corporate taxes and rewrite the code to make sure corporations pay their taxes for realz and not just pretend to pay them while not so secretly price hiking their products to cover the income lost to taxes.
Obama chose option 2 now we have to wait and see if he really does throw a bill in to rewrite the codes, probably will not happen till after the elections if he is still in office.
This article reports that the president will propose lowering the tax rate for corporations, but he'll only close loopholes for those who don't hire in the U.S. Which means that if you do business on U.S. grounds with U.S. workers, you get a lower tax rate AND you get to keep your loopholes. (?)
I'm not sure this will produce more tax revenue given the strategies available to the 1%. Of course, wiping out the middle class deprives the Treasury of a huge chunk of tax revenue because people aren't working and if they are they are underemployed.
This plan sounds more hopeful then certain, and I'd like to see data that predicts an outcome over time.
So you see a shift to allow Super-Pacs THEN suddenly there is discussion of reducing corporate tax rates. Anyone see any connection there?????? Look at who is donating to the superpacs and you might (or might not) be surprised!
The dems can't be that blindly following can they???
no... he's calling the Republican's bluff. They have been campaigning on lower corp tax rates... so here it is. They won't allow it to pass, because then they would have nothing to campaign on. And would never give up the loopholes. The GOP realizes that corps pay next to nothing because of the loopholes.
The truth is that the GOP have no idea on how to turn the economy around other than promise a turn around. They all are coming up with the same trickle-down theory that has not worked for over three decades.
Did I really read this article? It sounds like President Obama is campaigning for the Republican nomination. What's next, he gonna offer a plan to abolish the EPA?
Isn't this corporate welfare? Thats what it would be labeled by every lefty on these boards if a republican were in charge. Oh the hypocrisy of it all.
Dave, not at all. Obama is just proving he is a Centrist and will take any idea that he agrees with and that is backed up by either advisers or data no mater if it is a Republican or Democratic idea (that is the right way to practice politics by the way, no party affiliations). The only problem here is if he does not rewrite the tax code it will be ineffective except to cause some mass hysteria within the House.
Corporate America wants workers who will live packed in huge low cost dorms and be available at a moments notice for work. They should work 16-20 hours a day for ridiculously low wages. They want to be able to have children work the same hour using toxic chemicals. If worker complains they should be fired or arrested. To some it up they want slaves which along with now environmental protections is what China gives them.
Why do you think lowering the tax rate which they wont really pay anyway is going to override this?
But this is part of trickle on economics that has been the rule in the US for the last 30 years. I am sure it will kick in any day now.
How about reducing the tax rate to 25% and get rid of 95% of the tax loop holes that allow companies like GE to pay no taxes. Congress took political contributions (bribes) to create the tax loop holes that have had unintended consequences.
Eric, while I would not be surprised if they did they would really be shooting themselves in the head with a 12 gauge if they did. Basically it is a lose-lose situation for the Republicans.
And when a Republican talks tax cut, it is always for the rich, super rich and tax loopholes are for the multi billionaire corporations. And the problem with their trickle philosophy of grossly over indulging "job creators" is that the create jobs ......in China, India, etc... Romney as offered tax cuts to multi billionaires and billionaires, Gingrich is fixated on colonizing the moon, and Santorum is fixated on a coup take over of American government for the Vatican.
I hear you. It begs the question, what the hell took so long for such talk (action will be nice, but will believe it when I see it), also, one has to wonder whose going to get jacked up in the process. One thing we know for sure, Obama doesn't take a dump unless it might mean his class warfare and anti-corporatism ideology continues to proceed forward, so expect an increase somewhere else. It's all about creating the illusion and the public perception with him (and any other politician, but especially Obama)
mountainmike you are an idiot. What do you think Obama is doing right now? he is proposing to cut taxes for the rich, the super rich, and more loopholes for multi billionaire corporations.
I mean isn't that what lowering taxes on corporations means? Or is obama only going to lower the tax rate for "poor" corporations? Get your head out of the sand. obama is obviously for rich big greedy corporations if he wants to lower their taxes.
Bush did it and he was called a rich oil man who wanted to make the rich richer. Well Obama is wanting to do it now. That makes him the same as bush. Obama wants the coorporations to hoard more of its money, keeping the little man down, not to mention raising the deficit even higher. Less taxes means more debt right?
Obama is supporting rich greedy corporations by cutting their taxes. Remember this working class and poor when it comes time to re elect this rich 1%-er who is our current president. He is for big corporations and hates poor people and the middle working class.
Guess he kinda forgot Obama extended a MIDDLE CLASS tax cut. But socialists for the rich just ignore what he's done for the middle class because they LIKE the idea of serfdom
Bob - Obama ran around the country telling everyone he was going to get the middle class tax cut and I December because he wanted to go on vacation settled to 2 months and $80.00. As much as I could use it it would be worth $920.00 to see him on the curb next year. Before any taxes are raised or in this case lowered they need a budget and CUT SPENDING to pay down the debt. These nut cases in DC all want a 10 plan to reduce the debt but would that not require a 10 year budget? Like that is not a loophole with 10 budget cycles and 4 elections do you really think it will happen?
Guess he kinda forgot Obama extended a MIDDLE CLASS tax cut. But socialists for the rich just ignore what he's done for the middle class because they LIKE the idea of serfdom
You mean that MIDDLE CLASS tax cut paid for with a hidden mortgage fee that will cost home buyers thousands?
P.S. I think the only OECD country significantly below us in corporate tax collections (not rates...which are rather meaningless given deductions, loopholes, etc.) is Germany. Germany also has an economy based on trade surpluses, which help fund its social programs. Maybe they're the new model?
Oh yeah...they also have a central bank far more conservative than our own.
cutting taxes for corporations will include the current health insurance companies. That means obama wants these big greedy health insurance companies to make even more money, which will just screw us little people even more!!!
Why can't you see that mountainmike? Take your blinders off. Obama is for big greedy corporations and insurance companies that screw the poor and middle class. Obama is a rich person himself. He made over 1.2 million last year!! He is rich, and but wanting to cut taxes for these big greedy corporations, he is just wanting to make them richer!!
Obamacare crushed job creation. No business wants to undertake a project without knowing the cost of each employee. No one was betting the cost would stay the same or go down.
Mike, the only thing that happened to ins. companies is they are getting a @!$%#load of wage slaves dropped in their laps. The only thing that's going to change is profits are going to go up and I'm betting care will go into the @!$%#ter.
"Maybe we can keep some jobs in the USA. After 3 plus years. Brilliant."
What is really amusing is that you seem to think any company actually pays 35% as their tax rate. Their ACTUAL tax rate is probably something entire different and is most likely lower than you pay.
Individuals paid over $ 1 trillion of tax receipts... companies paid less than $ 200 billion despite making trillions in profits.
And why do you think that is, Patrick? International corporations keep their profits overseas so they don't have to pay such a high tax. A lower rate will let them bring the profit home.
"And why do you think that is, Patrick? International corporations keep their profits overseas so they don't have to pay such a high tax. A lower rate will let them bring the profit home."
So your admitting they engage in tax evasion then? Which means you as the individual payer pay more. I also didn't say I was against a tax holiday of some sort...but not one that involves 0 % tax. In fact it should be a choice... 15% tax for repatriation if used to invest in new American jobs. 25% if distributed to shareholders or used to expand the corporation.
So your admitting they engage in tax evasion then?
In that they game the system, sure, why wouldn't they? It's not illegal, just crappy. We need to make it easier for them to do the best thing for the country, not just themselves.
exactly mountainmike. The corporations and rich need to pay more. But obama is cutting their taxes!! Obama doesn't want to cut the deficit and is only out to help his rich brothers and greedy corporations.
Obama doesn't care about the poor and middle class. He is lying, and just wants to help the greedy corporations so obama himself can get even richer!!!
he wants to cut corporate tax rates, which would make our deficit larger while hurting the poor and middle class even more!!! Obama is a liar!!
John, you are right...corporations should be paying more. But, it shouldn't be 35% tax rate. There are many small business owners who incorporate for legal protection purposes. Unfortunately, they lack the tax deductions that are afforded to many large corporations. So, by raising the corporate tax rate, you impact the very employers who drive the economy (small businesses). We all agree that with the loopholes, many companies pay nearly 0 in taxes. By eliminating loopholes and lowering the tax rate, more revenues would be generated. I do believe that manufacturing companies that are overseas should be offered 0 corporate taxes in order for us to expand are manufacturing base in this country and create some much needed jobs. Additionally, nobody should ever collect from the government any more than they pay into it. Not one penny more. 47% of all Americans pay no federal income taxes after all deductions and refunds are distributed. Something has to change, because it is obvious that we cannot afford $1 trillion deficits.
Good gosh, what a blatant election year stunt. Why didn't he do this in 2009 so that we could have saved ourselves 3 years of hell. POTUS is a SCROTUS.
Go Obama. I am voting for him over the GOP fools. At least Obama knows the value of compromising and he is willing to cross partisan boundaries to help better the country.
He is just pranking the republicans. He knows that they are comitted to coming out against anything and everything he proposes, so now they have to come out against lowering corporate taxes. Norquest is going to spank them for that ! This is getting to be fun !
Another election year stunt. The Panderer in Chief! What about the 45% of American households that pay ZERO Federal income tax? How about addressing that, Dr. Doolittle?
Yes, ask Mitt or Newt if they are ready to come out and demand more taxes from those at the poverty level. If you think that is what we need, why won't your boys come out and say it ?
Come on...the other guys are clueless. All part of the plan to reemphasize manufacturing and help our global competitiveness. Why wouldn't he lower the rate?
He's not zeroing the corporate tax out totally and he's not offering the free repatriation of overseas profits - i.e. he's only "selling out" the far left portion of his base by about one-third.
Look out !!! EVERY tax REFORM in history has turned out to be a tax INCREASE !!! We can't trust Obama in ANYTHING !!! We have LEARNED that the HARD way !!! We must vote Obama and all the so called liberal progressive democrats OUT !!!
Of course we need more taxes. Taxes are what pay for running the country. You can't have a civilization without taxes. Stop whining about taxes and pay your share! Right now taxes are lower than they've been in a generation. Just putting tax rates back where they were when the country was last prosperous would eliminate most of the current deficit. Why can't conservatives understand you can't get something for nothing. If you want the best country in the world, you're going to have to pay for it.
"We must PASS the bill to find out whats in the bill"..........spoken by a liberal genius.............to liberal followers that apparently could care less what the specifics are as long as it means free govt stuff.
I think the "effective tax rate" - i.e. money actually collected - is around 13-15%. Big difference from the nominal 35% rate.
Point is that this doesn't amount to too much one way or the other UNLESS the loopholes are addressed, since they make up so much more than a drop between 35% and the high twenties.
Not to worry...we'll get to that part AFTER the election.
Watch the pea...watch the shells...watch the hands, which are quicker than the eye. But, after three plus years of Boehner and McConnell, what did you expect?
The top tax rate for companies and individuals should be 25%.
BUT ... it should be 25%, with NO LOOPHOLES. If everyone paid their 25%, fair and square, capital gains included, we would all be much better off.
A standard deduction for couples and UP TO 2 CHILDREN, would make the overall tax burden percentage for low wage earners considerably less. No additional deductions for more than 2 children. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE MORE THAN 2 CHILDREN, DON'T HAVE THEM!
But, if you can afford to house, clothe, feed, and educate more than 2 children, by all means, help yourself!
If you have no job, or are making less than 20k/year, and have 4 children ... guess what? YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG!
In short ... get the fair taxes, ALL the fair taxes, from those who earn. STOP supporting those who aren't doing their best to better themselves and their family.
As a government, I'd rather spend 100 billion dollars training, educating, and preparing poor people for jobs, than 50 billion dollars simply giving them money. Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he'll never go hungry.
RI Mom....now the republicans are going to have to come out against a tax cut because it is Obama's idea ! If they don't, Norquest will put them in time out !
So lower the taxes for businesses that do business exclusively in the U.S.- but have an operation overseas...and get ready for a whole new layer of taxes.
Congratulations...on picking up on a Republican Central Focus. You have nothing to offer in a second term Mr. President. All you have is help for your voter base...Unions, Hollywood, Warren Buffet (X/L pipeline not in the interest of the US). Jobs lost, profits for Buffets rail road, and missing about $10 a barrel for oil that could be sent to our refineries that have capacity to convert the crude to gasoline and other products.
If I remember, all Bush had to offer for his reelection was his frequent upgrades of his color-coded terror alert system. He did the same thing over and over every time his government was in the hot seat.
Obama has everything to offer for his second term. He needs to be reelected to counter the plot of the Repu-gnants-blicans to transform this nation into a bipolar nation: the wealthy 1% at the top and the 99% at the bottom with NO MIDDLE CLASS.
Obama has showed that he was a man of compromise. He has reached many times over and over to the other side to rebuild the economy. But each time, The Repu-gnants-blicans said "NO, NO, NO, Hell NO!" But he still keep trying.
Guess what? Because this proposal comes from Obama, your party will oppose it. As always. Mark my words.
The fine print is going to call the corporations' bluff. If they want a lower tax rate they'll have to pay all of it - no loopholes. And they'll have to keep their jobs in the country.
Why in the hell should anyone expect anything different from a man whose only experience is .........well, nothing except a senator of just a few months.
There has long been bipartisan support for lowering the tax rate for corporations while eliminating most of the special tax preferences and thereby keep it revenue neutral. Even the Chamber of Commerce supports such a plan, acknowledging that some companies would gain and others would lose as a result but would improve our competitiveness overall in the global economy. It would also give more certainty to the business planning cycle. The big problem would be keeping Congress in line so they would not put new tax preferences into the tax code over time.
As long as tax preferences that encourage moving jobs overseas are done away with and all loopholes are closed so that corporations actually have to pay 25% (and not 0% as too many currently do), I think we can live with this reform. But I completely agree with putting an extra tax on profits made in low tax countries.
You have to wonder when someone like Obama proposes something that will actually help the country. His whole career is based on taking not giving.
Indeed, it's absolutely infuriating.
Say what you want about the Republicans.......since the "shellacking" of 2010, Obama is a changed man!
Ha Ha Ha. Doesn't get any better than this.
The champion of class warfare and savior of all people seeking handouts pitching a lower tax rate for corporations.
How will the Liberals convince themselves they have not been fooled yet again this time?
Too little too late........to save Mr. Obama in his re-election campaign. However, another ATTEMPT at getting some VOTES.
Waiting for the Left to respond to this "attempt" to go against their agenda of attacking the rich and what it will mean to their Class Warfare tacftic.
BTW:
And once again, the STATESMAN in Washington DC shows that he can compromise.
Democrats batting over 1000
Republicans...zip
Are you kidding us.....this is all about being reelected. But then the left has their head so far buried in the sand they cannot see otherwise.
When he campaigns, he really campaigns. He moves to the center, but the real question is: where will he be if he gets re-elected?

Stay small.
So, everywhere else, they've replaced the corporate tax with a VAT tax so the little guy gets to make up the difference - gee, thanks.
That guy would kill his own family to get reelected. Makes me sad.
Greg in NY,
Keep telling yourself that, this is nothing but a re-election ploy. WTF?
Obama is all about bringing jobs back and always has been. He wants to raise taxes on the wealthy not corporations.
Americans need jobs, and Obama is listening where the GOP is not listening about taxing the wealthy or passing relevant jobs bills.
But you socialists for the rich just kind of ignore the middle class so it's no surprise you hate Obama.
seems like this was discussed 3 YEARS ago..........
have a good week
Greg in New York,
Are you serious?
Mr. Obama, in November, the American People will say with a loud voice "You're FIRED!"
.
Greg in New York,
absolutely correct, reich wing trolls don't like it though.........
Dick Cheney was the worst pres ever !!! oh, I mean Bush jr.
I would, however, suggest that any savings corporations might realize from a lower tax rate will only result in corporations reporting greater profits.
satan - "I am for lowering the corporate tax rate because then prices on goods and services would go down"
Who knew satan was so naive?
And who knew pjam09 could be so............brillant
12 Corporations Pay Effective Tax Rate of Negative 1.5% on $171 Billion in Profits
http://www.scribd.com/doc/56809745/12-Corporations-Pay-Effective-Tax-Rate-of-Negative-1-5-on-171-Billion-in-Profits
Flip flop....flip flop.....flip flop AGAIN and AGAIN !!
WOW, just what will Mr. Obama do next to get VOTES ?
Oh, yeah...abortion issue, HAMP #3 handout for homeowners, permit for a nuclear energy site, more $$$ for education, etc.
Here is a message for the Liberals:
Believe it or not Ido but rich people and businesses are not the same thing
In spite of the right wing crazies who call him a "socialist" he's really a Republican and this is a standard Republican idea.
Both Republican and Democratic administration have been cutting the corporate tax rate for a long time and for the average american things have been getting worse.
http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/briefing-book/key-elements/business/images/corptaxrates_graph_2.jpg
It has nothing to do with sound economic policy.
It has EVERYTHING to do with getting reelected.
Dude's got no Soul, no Principles.
Superpac this, Obama.
I suppose you believe in the tooth faerie too! If it passes the only thing that would happen is the corporate executives back checks would increase. Since corporations are now people according to republicans then they should pay the same tax rates as humans in the same income bracket.
Not according to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Obama would kill his own family to get reelected. He has no morals, no principles, no consistency at all.
Makes me sad.
Republicans are just jealous that Obama is going to implement it. You've seen nothing from Republicans on this in the house.
Obama = action
Republicans = obstruction
They have tried this but your friend in the Senate wouldn't even let it come to a vote. If he does this time can you say hypocrite?
Google Reason Magazine, then Warren Buffett: Baptist and Bootlegger. It shows it is all a scam. Buffett buys stock, then lobbies for bailouts and makes a ton of money. They are all in bed with each other.
I read the blog entries and they are laughable.
Go head, prove me wrong!
Why is Obama only doing seemingly productive/rational things NOW after three years of treading water Obama 2012??
More political grandstanding, as over two-thirds of corporations pay no federal corporate income tax (Huffington Post, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/10/corporations-pay-no-tax_n_1196875.html).
Getting tired of politicians thinking they live in the “United States of Suckers.”
Because of all of the loop holes NO corporations pay 35%. What Obama is doing is fixing it so the pay ZERO taxes and everyone else gets hosed.
no... he's calling the Republican's bluff.
This is for all the Obama lovers.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterferrara/2012/02/09/dont-be-fooled-the-obama-unemployment-rate-is-11/
Funny that the closer we get to the election the more Obama looks like a republican.
Who cares! Now Obama Loves Superpacs! His "liberal" sheep will follow blindly along.
Obama, Yay!
Superpacs! Yay!
Make s me want to puke. I swear, Obama supporters are like a Cult.
Who funds Superpacs? Corporations!
Corporations! Yay!
What do corporations want? Tax Breaks!
Blind Liberals who STILL can't see how much they've been lied to :
"Tax Cuts for corporations! Yay!"
Maybe we can keep some jobs in the USA.
After 3 plus years. Brilliant.
Maybe after 3 years of anti-business tactics he needs to buy some corporate votes... don't you think?
Keep jobs in the US? Yeah right
Corporate America wants workers who will live packed in huge low cost dorms and be available at a moments notice for work.
Congress took political contributions
(bribes) to create the tax loop holes that have had unintended consequences.
Watch the republicans block this measure too.
Eric, while I would not be surprised if they did they would really be shooting themselves in the head with a 12 gauge if they did. Basically it is a lose-lose situation for the Republicans.
They should. I want to hear the LWNJ's scream about the Right not caring about poor corporations.
He's running for re-election, now.
When a Democrat talks tax cut, you KNOW there's an election coming.
He is for big corporations and hates poor people and the middle working class.
post 4.3 reported as inflammatory.
For all the Obama lovers.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterferrara/2012/02/09/dont-be-fooled-the-obama-unemployment-rate-is-11/
You mean that MIDDLE CLASS tax cut paid for with a hidden mortgage fee that will cost home buyers thousands?
cnettv.cnet.com/hidden-mortgage-fee-paying-payroll-tax-cut/9742-1_53-50119506.html
John Haddock, please mind rule # 1 of the Code of Honor in the future.
And, the winning number is 28.
Actually, if you look at actual collections, as a percentage of GDP, we're about average already...maybe a little below average.
This is the "Why Wouldn't You Vote For Me? I Am Actually A Republican In Disguise" strategy.
Clever fellow...guess the message to his base is: "Who else are you going to vote for?"
Too funny. Three years ago Obamacare was the answer to all our economic problems. Now it's anything to get re-elected.
"Obamacare" was all about the reform of the health care insurance industry. YES, they are corrupt and that needed to done.
cutting taxes for corporations will include the current health insurance companies.
The only thing that's going to change is profits are going to go up and I'm betting care will go into the @!$%#ter.
haddock,
you really need to do some reading. no one is paying 35%
Is that fair to you or anyone?
So why don't we make the tax rate about 15% flat on anything over say $40,000 and make everyone equal?
And why do you think that is, Patrick? International corporations keep their profits overseas so they don't have to pay such a high tax. A lower rate will let them bring the profit home.
Pat - "Individuals paid over $ 1 trillion of tax receipts... companies paid less than $ 200 billion"
Says who? Companies paid far more than $200 billion.
In that they game the system, sure, why wouldn't they? It's not illegal, just crappy. We need to make it easier for them to do the best thing for the country, not just themselves.
The IRS says, that's who.
2009 Individuals paid $1.4 trillion. Corporations paid $225 billion.
http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/article/0,,id=102886,00.html
And here is the ugly reality of a $15 trillion national debt. We need SHARED sacrifice, including corporations and the wealthy contributing.
If Corporations And The Rich Paid Taxes At The Same Level As The 1960s, The Debt Would Disappear
If you want to pay down the national debt instead of just deal with deficit reductions, this invariably will be what is needed plus a substantial cut in military spending.
exactly mountainmike.
Fine for the tax cut...eliminate loopholes.
We've already eliminated solvency so might as well work on loopholes.
True. Now if he would just do this in the US to help better this country. In all fairness, his job creation outside the US has been pretty good.
Obama's understanding of compromise is when the other side comes over to his point of view.
satan - "Obama knows the value of compromising and he is willing to cross partisan boundaries to help better the country."
Obama knows the value of flip-flopping and he is willing to say anything to get ignorant bafoons to better his chance at retaining power.
I'm against super PAC's.... Now I endorse super PAC's
religious-affiliated employers have to pay for birth control .... um , no they don't
The rich don't pay enough taxes.... lets give corporations a tax cut
Etc......
He is just pranking the republicans. He knows that they are comitted to coming out against anything and everything he proposes, so now they have to come out against lowering corporate taxes. Norquest is going to spank them for that ! This is getting to be fun !
And the GOP never ever would think about flip flopping right pjam09? ;)
Satan go worship obama........uhh- the devil I mean. the chosen one, the messiah, the anointed one.......the omen.
Wonder if Obama has been able to talk the Greek government into funding this tax break?
Maybe Obama can become the Greek president when he becomes unemployed in 2013. I think he and the Greeks have a lot in common.
Possible. Depends on what the Syrians and Libyans offer.
Too little too late. Just a simple campaign ploy. He is anti business.
Only anti-US business. The Chinese are going to re-elect him if Venezuela can't get him on the ballot.
"From each according to their abilities. To each according to their needs." ---Karl Marx
Apparently we're trying to recoup the 10% of the voters we pissed off last week.
Ain't gonna happen...
"We must PASS the bill to find out whats in the bill"..........spoken by a liberal genius.............to liberal followers that apparently could care less what the specifics are as long as it means free govt stuff.
Over what?
Poison the fish's environment and no one will be able to eat them!
why would you spend billions of dollars to educate the underprivelidged if all the jobs go over seas
the jobs moved over sea so they would not have to pay for the removal of their @!$%# just dump it in the river
All You GOP snickering that this is an "election year stunt"...
So what?
You wanted it...and it is on the table.
The Republicans are caught up in contraception and boasting who is more conservative. YAWN
RI Mom....now the republicans are going to have to come out against a tax cut because it is Obama's idea ! If they don't, Norquest will put them in time out !
Say what? Obama must be a closet Republican...lol.
He does govern more like a conservtive than a liberal
I guess he wants to get re-elected. He's doing something contrary to his ideology.
His ideology is to forge an agreement about how to move the country forward. He's right on track with that.
Did you forget the /s Maha? I hope so because I snorted coffee up into my nose when I read that.
Are you still a teenager MahaDave?
The closer we get to election day, the more he sounds like a republican. I'll believe it when I see the fine print.
The fine print is going to call the corporations' bluff. If they want a lower tax rate they'll have to pay all of it - no loopholes. And they'll have to keep their jobs in the country.
President Obama is flailing and grasping at straws. Talk about someone with no core beliefs or cohesive strategy.
His 2013 budget with a $900+billion deficit is a bad joke.
The big problem would be keeping Congress in line so they would not put new tax preferences into the tax code over time.
biparisan support??????????Are you for real....please provide proof there has been support from the left for corporations.
As long as tax preferences that encourage moving jobs overseas are done away with and all loopholes are closed so that corporations actually have to pay 25% (and not 0% as too many currently do), I think we can live with this reform. But I completely agree with putting an extra tax on profits made in low tax countries.
