McDonalds was absolutely correct - pit bulls and Rottweilers kill and maim more human beings by far than any other breed. But considering their customer base, it was probably inevitable that they would have to back water on this ad.
Any animal is more dangerous than their food product. Lord knows people are more dangerous than it. I find it hard to understand how somebody at McDonalds didn't think for a second that they might upset some people with this advertisement. I'm glad they pulled the advertisement. Also, from the people I've talked to, pit bulls are not the top of the list of dogs who vets worry about biting them. There are others that apparently bite more often.
many communities allow firecrackers on the 4th of july but not m-80s.
why? because the damage a misued firecracker can do is nothing like the maiming a misused m-80 can do.
the parallel between cocker spaniels (a sometimes mean dog in my experience) and a pit bull is the same. i'll live with the risk of a puncture wound, but not with the risk of dismemberment and death.
We all know pit bulls are dangerous if their owners make them into dangerous weapons, people are always getting mad at the dogs but it's the owners who are to blame, but you can't blame the owners cause it's politically incorrect to say what we all know:
It's all these wanna-be drugs dealers and gangster types that are abusing these animals (like Mike Vic) and turning them into monsters. But we have to watch what we say or we'll be labeled racist or whatever, so we have to blame the breed of dog and not the breed of human.
my neighbor had a pit bull and his little boy (7 yrs old) would go out and feed it every night. you guessed it one night the pit bull attacked the little boy and he took over 150 stitches in his face. the only thing I would pet a pit bull with is a 44.
Ignorant fool!!! Would it kill you to do the LEAST bit of your own research before spouting off on a topic you are so obviously completely ignorant of????? Bully breeds used to be referred to as "Nanny" dogs during our more agrarian times here in the U.S. Why? Because farmers would leave pit bulls with their kids to watch over them while they worked all day. Bully breeds also have a long and distinguished history as service/therapy dogs for the military, for the disabled, law enforcement, etc. Not to mention they finish higher on temperment test than most Labs do. The nature of ANY dog's existence is a function of the nature of the owner. Plain and simple.
Ok, Richard. I'll concede to you the fact that there are dogs that bite more often. You have to give to me though, that you are using a statistic in a BS fashion.
I have yet to hear one news report of a death or maiming by a 1.2 lbs purse dog.
Sadly, many victims of this breed of dog are small children and family members. When something like that happens, 100% across the board they always claim that the dog was the sweetest animal they have ever had. They are most likely, telling the truth.
The problem is, that this breed of dog has instinctual triggers that cause it to attack. No matter how loving, how friendly, how anything, these dogs get triggered and God help their target.
People are the ones who make the dog dangerous. Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds...I have know many dogs of these so called deadly breads...and not one has been more than a big softy who thinks it's a lap dog. The pit bulls I have know (owned by family) have been the biggest babies of them all. Those who honestly believe that any breed is dangerous on their own have no clue what so ever about dogs. If you abuse and neglect a dog, or don't train/socialize them properly, or get them from puppy mills (those dogs are over bread and tend to have various health problems that could potentially pose a safety risk) then it is YOUR fault the dog is viscous.
Pitbulls have a bad reputation because they are among the strongest breeds in the dog world. People see this and they teach them to fight. Properly trained, a pit is no more dangerous or 'evil' than a labrador or even a poodle. Even the golden retirever has one of the highest bite rates in the US.
It makes me sick when people stereo-type animals. Don't base your argument on an assumption, it just shows how uneducated you really are.
True, it's amusing that people would get so riled up about an ad, but, please people, it's ones like you that help fule the belief that pits are evil, sadistic creatures.
All of these companies that are appologizing for truthfull ads and political incorectness are cowards! Pit Bulls are bred for 1 thing and 1 thing only, VIOLENT behavior!
Dogs only hurt people that hurt them or teach them to hurt others, dog or otherwise. I own a sweetheart of a pit bull, named angel, that has never hurt a human or animal and i hate McDonald's food. The only information you have about Pitt bulls is what you have heard in the media and only those who have suffered abuse from their owners and forced to fight. but lets say we destroy the breed, then what? What breed next would the "dog fighters" use, and how long afterwards would you demand their destruction? then what breed after that? it isn't the dogs that should be destroyed its the humans that make them monsters that should be. You might think that only low brow, rednecks or ghetto gangstas are Pitt owners, but its just proves how ignorant you truly are.
What aren't you telling us? That the owner was mean to it? That the owner trained it to be aggressive? You are leaving something out.Did the kid mess with the food after the dog was eating?
It's the owner that needs to be shot, not the dog. It is just being what it was trained by the owner to do. Why didn't the owner get off his lazy ass to feed a dog he clearly raised to be aggressive.
Ever single breed has the ability to be very aggressive. Poodles aren't all cuddly you know. Dalmatians tend to bite their owners too. Dobermans can be quite nasty as well. Hell, even ankle biters can cause serious injury.
A dog is only as aggressive and mean as it is raised.
My neighbor has a pit Bull that she raised with love and affection. Do you want to know it's meanest act it has ever done on someone? It has rolled over on it's back for a belly rub. Never once has it shown any signs of aggression towards anyone, to include strangers.
However, any breed, no matter how nice you may think it is, will bear its teeth when you mess with their food while they are eating it. Something that owner should have thought of when sending a child out to feed a hungry dog. Guess laziness taught him a lesson at the child's expense.
So everyone, keep on blaming the dogs for being trained to act a specific way. Guess that's easier than taking responsibility for ones actions.
You can train the aggression out of almost any dog, but you can't remove ignorance from humans.
The pit bull breed needs to go extinct. Plain and simple. Confiscate and terminate them all. Enough children have been murdered by them (and adults). End of discussion.
Actually McDonalds is wrong. Some Pitbulls will hurt you. EVERY Chicken McNugget is full of artery clogging CRAP. Pitbulls are only mean if you make them mean. Owners who make them mean should be taken out and shot right with the dog.
"Instinctive triggers", that applies to any member of the K-9 family. The problem is, many who own these dogs encourage aggressive behavior. A well trained and maintained dog not a problem regardless of breed. My Rottweiler will do nothing but look at you unless or until commanded to act or you present yourself as a threat. At which point she will take you off your feet and hold you down. Dogs that are well trained are not the issue.
Pit bulls were not a problem until recently. The "Our Gang Kids" of the forties had a dog named "Petey" you guessed it a pit bull. He only went after someone when commanded to do so. The rest of the time he was a companion dogs for the kids in the show. It isn't the breed, it the owner. Until people figure that out and hold them responsible for the monsters they create, the dog will get a bad rap.
McDonalds is just using the stereotype that has risen up around the breed thanks to careless, mindless, stupid owners who knowingly make them vicious. It's just easier to blame the dog than it is to blame a group of humans. And that applies to all races who think a pit is the ultimate in tough dogs. Hold these PEOPLE financially and criminally responsible for their creations actions. A vicious dog is no different that a gun in the wrong hands. Start dealing with the owners of vicious dogs in the same terms.
I am a longtime volunteer with an inner-city animal shelter, and our shelter is the ONLY one in the entire area thirty-miles any way) that will take in pit bulls. The Humane Society is off to one county north of us, the SPCA off to the south, and both of them will euthanize as soon as a pit bull comes in, irregardless of age--even puppies.
I have seen good pits and bad pits and what strikes me most is how like people they are. I have seen absolutely uncontrollable dogs come from the most secure, loving homes; I have seen some of the sweetest dogs come from the most horrible situations. Dogs are like people. Some people, when abused as a child, become abusers themselves. Some people, no matter how they are abused, never do stick up and fight for themselves; they just don't have that spark in them to make them do that. One of the sweetest pits I ever saw came from a dogfighting ring; she was terribly scarred, had one leg amputated because one of the fighting dogs had snapped her rear leg in half and it had to be removed at the hock. We all thought she was going to be vicious after that, but she was the sweetest, most loving and forgiving pit I'd ever dealt with at the shelter. She eventually found a great home and now visits the shelter regularly with her human--a ten year old child who lost her leg due to a cancer--had to have it amputated to keep the cancer from spreading, and the one legged kid and the three-legged dog are now inseparable.
The worst pit I ever saw was Rascal, a black and white pit. He was purchased as a puppy from a licensed breeder, cost a couple thousand dollars, was a perfect show dog--and was absolutely unmanageable. Chewed everything, peed all over the house, snapped at owner and children, was finally surrendered to the shelter because the owners simply couldn't deal with him--even had an animal behaviorist come in to try and had no luck. Rascal stayed with us for a couple months while one of the animal care attendants worked with him. He loved her, would do absolutely ANYTHING for her...but with everyone else he was unmanageable and snappy. He was finally adopted by someone who wanted to show him...and brought back two days later on the end of a pole because he bit his new owner's boyfriend. The shelter got in a bit of trouble over that even though we told the owner that he only liked females and absolutely hated men, and she assured us that she was single, had no men to visit and he did like her--we didn't adopt him to her right away, we made her come back for two-hour visits for a week until we were sure that she would be fine with him, and he with her. She, however, wasn't being quite honest with us about her living situation (had a boyfriend who slapped her around) and Rascal bit her boyfriend when the guy went to slap her. So he was put to sleep.
Okay, Sparky, you're an idiot. Research the history of pit bulls. They were once deemed the protector of children because of their stalwart loyalty and love for kids. They were America's mascot during WWI. The only reason you're terrified of pit bulls is because you don't READ anything that's not on the front page of MSN or CNN or Fox's web site.
NYMike- you're wrong. There are plenty of people out there that have NEVER mistreated their pits and still had them attack someone without provocation. Also, hunger doesn't mean aggression. Every dog (no matter what breed) should have a human touch its food and the dog itself when it's a puppy. Food aggression is one 'temperament test' that most shelters and rescues use to determine if a dog is 'adoptable'. Dogs should NOT bite, growl, bare teeth, or show any other sort of aggression!!
Some pits seem to be OK. However, the majority have no place in the average home. Too many times this results in someone being attacked. They've earned their reputation!
At the shelter we're taught some basic rules and we try to impress this into EVERYONE who comes to adopt ANY animal, from pitbulls to guinea pigs to fish:
1) NEVER leave a child alone with an animal no matter how well-beaved you think the animal, or the child, is.
2) Teach your child NEVER to run up to an animal, whether a dog walked on the street by its owner or a stray. While a child's first instinct is to run up to pet a puppy, this is NOT a good idea. ALWAYS ask the owner first if one is available if there is no one about, leave the area quickly but calmly and go to the nearest house and call your local animal control or the police if it is an emergency.
3) If you are not sure about an animal, turn and walk calmly away. DO NOT RUN. Running can signal to an animal, particularly a dog, that you are prey. Prey gets bitten.
After reading comments about this I cannot believe that we have the nerve to claim to be an intelligent, evolved, and rational speieces. Bring up pit bulls and just watch how stupid people become. Most of the population is absoultely clueless not just to the "pit Bull" but to dog's in general and the statsitcs on them. First of all there is no such things as a "safe" dog. They don't exist!! At the genetic base level all dogs are preditors and hunters and prone to attack, hurt, maim, and kill not only people but other animals. Secondly, actually know something about a breed of dog before you get on spewing your crap. I have spent my whole life around pit bulls and studying them and learning to understand the bread. I'm not going to say that pit bulls don't attack people and that their aren't times when you will come across a vicious one, but I will tell you despite media presentation that is not the norm and just like any dog attack pit bull attacks should be evaluated by the totality of the circmusatnces. A good majority of pit bulls are good dogs and in the right hands will nevr be a problem just like in the wrong hands a golden retriever will be just as likely to attack and potential hurt you. In fact last year one was reported and in less then 20 minutes of it happen the writer of the article was reprimanded and told to take it down because it involved a bread other then a "vicious" labled dog. Lastly I will say this; there is one stat I think everyone should be aware of before judging how bad pitbulls are. Every year a list of dogs is issued that you are most like to get bit by. The last five years in a row the number one dog on that list was a poodle and for the last decade that the list has been published not a single breed recognized by the AKC that people would classify under the nickname "pitbull" has even been in the top ten of dogs your likely to get attacked by. Ignorance is a very powerful thing just as much so as knowledge, but the sad thing is most people shoose to stay ignorant because they don't want to put in the effort to learn and they just don't care.
On another note--I used to work Animal Control dispatch when I was in the welfare to work program--you had to do 20 hours of work in a government office each week if you wanted a welfare check and I picked animal control.
One night I got a call from a woman who was absolutely hysterical and the only thing i could get from her was that she went to put her trasdhj out and some sort of animal got between her and her front door and was preventing her from entering the house. I contacted one of the duty AEO's and asked him to stop otu there and have a look. He came back tot he office at the end of his shift and told me that when he got there, the woman was hysterically crying and the 'aggressive animal' that had gotten into her yard and got between her and her front door was...a chicken.
He taught her how to kill herself a free-range chicken dinner.
All of the Pit Bull apologists are totally and 100% wrong in what they are saying. Pit Bull have been BREAD to be unstable so they can be vicious and mean.
I am a female and my neighbors daughter used to have a pit bull. She would bring it over when she visited. Never had a problem and then one day the dog started trying to get to me when I was in my own yard doing nothing to provoke it. You could tell it wanted to kill me. The girl had a hard time trying keep control of it. I ran into the house and didn't leave until she left.
I found out sometime after that the Pit Bull attacked a mailman and shredded his leg and almost killed him. They killed the dog. We have had multiple incidents in our city with ONLY pit bulls attacking people and KILLING children over the last few years.
Pit Bulls are insane animals and anyone that would own one is just as insane. If someone owns one and has kids need to haver their kids taken from them as they are irresponsible parents.
madcitizen, most Pit Bull owners are either Caucasian or Black.
i was just reading the other day a list of the top ten deadliest dogs. number one on the list was rottweilers, number two, pitbull, followed by german shephard..... any dog has the potential to bite.but the degree of damage can be tremendous considering the dog.anyone who allows there 7 yr. old to feed there pitbull is absolutely not thinking straight.as a pitbull owner i am always on guard. my dog is a happy loving dog.but i am aware of the damage these animals as well as any other dog of their size and strength can cause and act accordingly .the problem with alot of these dogs is their temperment from being in-bred , cross-bred and so on.the same with rotts and shephards.these animals can be awesome pets given the right owner....enough said ... i love my pitbull.........................i honestly have to say though the lack of knowledge and lower level of intellect publicly displayed in many responses here is almost painful.......
You know something, Sandy? If you can't manage the distinction between the terms "bread" (white, wheat or rye?, lol) and "bred", you really have no business participating in this discussion. If you haven't taken the time to educate yourself on the basics of the English language, what makes anyone think you would educate yourself regarding bully breeds? I own an American Pitbull Terrier that lets my Mother's cats beat her up when we visit. I know hundereds of other pitty owners with dogs that are just as sweet. Get educated, lady.
I don't agree with the statement that "it is not the breed, it is the owner." My neighbor is very nice and has children . . . and a pit bull. She lets the dog out in the front yard unattended. When I walk by or when I walk by with my dog, the pit bull growls at me and takes a stance like it is ready to attack. I have mentioned this to my neighbor a couple of times and she insists that her dog is a sweetheart and would never growl at anyone. Really? She does not believe me. On another occasion I had a student in my class who lived on the next street over from me. I knew the family well since I taught a couple of their children over the years. For some reason their dog was on our block running free. I started to walk across the street and called the dog by name. It turned and ran toward me growling and barking. I jumped on top of a car and the dog kept leaping and barking trying to get to me. Luckily another neighbor saw and called the police. the owners insisted it was a sweet dog and would never hurt anyone. Right. A few weeks later the dog was gone. I would NEVER trust a pit bull.
I'll accept that pit bulls are only aggressive when someone interferes with their food; if you'll accept that sometimes they'll think of small children and other pets as food.
I had to chase off a pit bull myself once when it attacked our fat little dog while she was pooping in our back yard. However, in that case I'll blame it's owners, since they kept it chained up in their back yard, without socializing it properly; so when it got loose from it's chain...
This simply shows that no matter how many people try to act as though stereo types of any kind are a thing of the past it is not so at all. IN fact McDonald's and other corporation continue to make money off of them every day. Look at adds with minorities. Movies etc. ; ]
EricB2, you have totally shown you don't have a leg to stand on when you try to pick someone apart for a spelling mistake. LOL Everyone makes them, get used to it. You know you are wrong and just can't find any REAL justification for your stance on pit bulls.
They are an unstable breed and from what I have seen of the owners around my area they are all self important people who are scared of their shadows and claim they want the animal for protection from imagined threats. In other words a little unstable themselves. Then again some are males who think owning a vicious dog will fill this void of inadequacy they have in themselves.
The thing is with Pit Bulls, and ANY other guard breed, is you have to know how to train them properly. Training a physically strong and highly protective breed is a big challenge. The majority of people have no clue how to properly train a dog like this. You can not give your dog human emotions and you have to make sure they know they are on the bottom of the totem pole. The minute they think they are above you is when you can start to have problems. I'm not saying not to love and spoil your dog, but with breeds such as the Pit Bull you have to make sure you are doing things like eating before they do or walking through a doorway first. Little things like that establish the pecking order between you and your dog, no matter what the breed. I have a German Shepherd/Chow mix. Both breeds are considered dangerous. However, because my dog is properly trained and knows his place, he is very loving and affectionate. He adores babies and children and when friends bring their kids he won't leave their side even with the offer of his favorite treats. He has never bitten anyone or been aggressive towards people. He is a guard dog tho, and I have no doubt in my mind that if someone broke into my house and tried to harm me he would attack. This does not mean he is dangerous.
Pit Bulls like many other breeds can be challenging to train, it's not a breed for everyone. However that doesn't make it an evil killing machine.
Of all the dogs I have known, the most loving and affectionate was a Pit Bull. She was on top of the world and your new best friend if you would let her snuggle with you. The other Pit Bull I knew only had one interest in life, and that was playing fetch. In my experience, the most aggressive dogs (dogs that bit, and frequently) where Bichons, Shih Tzus, and one very angry Pekingese. However I am smart enough to know that not all Pekingese are evil little dogs with only the desire to chew on the leg of the person closest to it.
Another thing you have to remember is how the dog was bred. Sadly a lot of Pit Bulls where over bred and/or inbred, which as with any breed can cause serious health problems for the dog, physical and mental. We had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (a breed know for being over the top affectionate) that was rescued from a puppy mill. Although he was crazy loving with those in his house hold and those who came over on a regular basis, if anyone he wasn't familiar with came over, he had to be kept in another room as he would try to bite anyone he didn't know well. One breed that has a serious problem from over breeding is the Saint Bernard. There are a lot of Saint B's that have turned on their owners when they are older. It's not because they are dangerous dogs, it is because of them being over bred. This is why people stress how important it is to go to a reputable breeder (not a pet shop) if you want a purebred dog.
So before you condemn an entire breed, (which do a little research, Pit Bulls are NOT the most dangerous breed and does NOT have the highest bit/attack/ect. rating) think of how much it is the fault of the owner or breeder for it having aggression problems.
not very smart are the illegals and the little high school gangbangers that walk around all of south texas and any where else near that border, with their pitbulls acting all tough. when they are too dumb to take car of it, and can't even afford to feed it without slinging a little something or getting welfare mom to pay for upkeep.when thesekids get locked up teens through 30's their moms on welfare will come up with money to send them in jail for commissary. It's pathetic . So dumb are those people that defend these people.they sell litters of them on many many corners in SAN ANTONIO everyday.
America is turning into a bunch of preschooler crybabies, wah, wah, wah, you said something that hurt my feelings, Boo fkn hoo I'm gonna get a lawyer and sue the hell out of you (that is what most of you crybabies sound like). And what's with all of these celebrities and all of this apologizing? Don't they know that this is America and we have the RIGHT to FREE speech and and he freedom to our own freewill and opinion? I will NEVER apologize for my RIGHT to free speech, NEVER, and if ANY of you don't like it you can kiss my FREE American A$$!!! If I got something to say I will say it PERIOD and if you don't like what I got to say then don't listen!!! Bunch of powder puff weak A$$ crybabies!!! I know I'm Pi$$ing off all you commies and nazi types and you know what ? I don't give a damn and I won't apologize 'cause I am a FREE American with the RIGHT to FREE speech!!! I know a lot of you will disagree and that is cool but I don't care 'cause you know you have that freedom too. That is what makes America so great. You see if they take away one person or groups freedom then they have to take away yours and mine as well and before you know it nobody has ANY freedom.
You beat me to the punch, Robert. I say that McDonalds kills hundreds more customers in one year than all pit bulls in the world have killed forever.
I was glad to see knowledgeable defenders of the breed speak out on their behalf. Eric and NYMike said it best. Try reading and learning something about them before jumping to conclusions based on the actions of a few that give the breed a bad rap.
I've owned pits for many years and not one has ever had a biting incident or fight with other dog(s). Of course, they were always treated with love and never chained or locked in with no chance to play.
In fact, I've read in various dog publications that pit bulls remain more playful as they age than any other breed. Two of my pits are 6 years old and still play like puppies with my 3 year old grandson who is gentle with them and doesn't bother them while they eat.
Some dog owners teach their dogs(all breeds) to be aggressive for security and others are just irresponsible by their failure to exercise and socialize their pets. These owners, and not their dogs, should be put down for their abuse.
Sandy, you do realize that most people who live in America are Caucasian or Black right? (Caucasian 79.96% Black 12.85%) So saying most Pit owners are Caucasian or Black is kind of a no sh*t Sherlock statement. Did you also know that most students are Caucasian or Black? Also, most owners of television sets are Caucasian or Black. Oh and don't forget, most people who shop are grocery stores are Caucasian or Black.
First this is about an error on McDonalds part not the breed of dog as all dogs can be dangerous. I am a dog lover and this ad just shows how stupid some people are when it comes to thinking before you leap. You have to realize this breed of dog is not the fighting kind you read about for almost all of the people who own them. I have been at friends houses and watched kids pull on their ears wrestle with them and do all sorts of things with them and never have they mustered more than a peep. On the other side we see pictures of them in rings trying to kill each other or read about the vicious dog that bit the neighbor. Well that will happen because they are also watch dogs when trained to be that and BTW so are dobemens Rotties and Germ shepards to name a few. People need to think before they send an ad llike this
Wow, some of you people are ill educated when it comes to pit bulls. They are only as aggressive as their masters make them. Most of them are very sweet, protective dogs just like any other breed.
Humans, more deadly than any animal on this planet.
McDonalds was in the wrong. They bought into a stereotype played up by dogs that are raised for fighting. You never see stories about the sweet, loyal side of pit bulls.
Also bare in mind that any domesticated dog can turn against you in a heartbeat. A lab? It's a big dog, it has pretty sharp teeth. A husky, can. Even ankle biters can! So stop knocking the pit bulls. Rotties are the same, people raise them to be mean, they will be mean. If people raise them to be sweet, they will be sweet.
To call someone under/ill educated because you don't know the difference between a "breed" or an "individual dog"...95% of all "dog" (and most other domesticated animals) breeds exist because a long line breeders have been selecting prefered traits...and yes "aggression" is a trait that is prevelant in this breed (and others)...that is not to say an Individual owner cannot train the selected behavior out of an individual dog
if you haven't ever owned a pitbull, you don't really have a clue as to how they are except what the 'media' has made them. pretty sure my dog ( a beautiful HARMLESS pitbull) wouldn't judge such an ignorant @!$%# as i would and that makes him far superior. i just pray that not only do all of you ill-informed people learn how wonderful they are, i hope you never actually own them because then i'd just have to feel even more sorry for them. do we all want to ban the bears who maul hikers? good lord people . . . get a damn clue.
i have a pit i love her more than anything! she is the best dog ever anyone that tells me different can go f!!k themselves! bad owners equals bad dogs!
I owned a red nose pit bull who was very cared for I spent time with him, fed him well, bought him toys and brought him for his regular visits to the vet. Very nice dog. I had never thought or heard much about pit bulls being a dangerous breed, until I woke up from my surgery where my ear had been almost completely ripped off from an attack as I was sitting in a chair watching TV. I don't think they should be allowed to continue to exist and all the TV shows on to promote them should be sued for not telling the whole story and letting people think "It's the owners fault they attack" I surely did nothing to deserve my attack!
My only experience with pitt bulls was walking down a street one day with my dog, and having a pitt bull come out of nowhere and attack my dog. I never found out who owned the dog or anything else. Thankfully my dog was not hurt seriously. I kicked at the pitt bull and finally went away.
I will have nothing at all to do with that breed. I wouldn't go near one.
While I think the advertising was ridiculous, I have NEVER been attacked by any other breed of dog before or since.
One has to love all these dog-apologists and their total ignorance. Pit bulls are the ONLY breed of dog purely created for no other reason than to fight and kill. It is bred into them, and anyone who thinks that they're a "safe" breed if they are "trained" to be gentle is doing nothing but deluding themselves. I cannot remember the last time I read of someone's Poodle attacking a child, or someone's Pomeranian maiming anyone. Pit bulls should be outlawed immediately, and their owners should be fined. They are a loaded gun, pointed at innocent bystanders. If people would check the facts, they'd know this. But instead, they bury their heads in the sand and ignore it. The statistics prove that Pit bulls are responsible for almost all incidents in the US since 1982.
Study highlights
The combination of pit bulls, rottweilers, their close mixes and wolf hybrids:
77% of attacks that induce bodily harm
73% of attacks to children
81% of attack to adults
68% of attacks that result in fatalities
76% that result in maiming
Even if the pit bull category was "split three ways," attacks by pit bulls and their closest relatives would still outnumber attacks by any other breed.
Pit bulls are noteworthy for attacking adults almost as frequently as children, a characteristic not shared by any other breed.
If a pit bull or rottweiler has a bad moment, instead of being bitten, often someone is maimed or killed; that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk.
@ The Evil Tessmacher, and the others like him/her. Any statistic, by any group can be altered or skewed to push what it is they want to say. If you want to talk about dangerous creatures on this planet that should be outlawed and banished, then hell, humans should top that chart!!! We are the cruelest and disgusting creatures existing on this rock. We are also dumb to think that these animals should act like stuffed toys. They are living creatures, that we bring into our homes, it is OUR job to train them and keep an eye on them. I've owned Rott's before, and yes, I have a Pitt now. And I have to tell you, they have been the most gentle with anyone out of all of my other dogs. So, instead of talking out of your asses and just jumping on the bandwagons out of your own fears. Why don't you try being the owner of one first, from puppy hood, and then tell me what you think.
Well, I know what Doobie McStoned was doing when he posted that. Please tell us what that entire tirade had to do with the topic? Yes, you have the right to free speech, but if you're going to post, it should have something to do with the topic at hand and not just diarrhea of the mouth.
I've known people who had pits that would lick you to death and poms that would devour you if given the chance. A lot of the problem is the owners but the traits that have been encouraged in the lineage of pits is part of the problem too. Pits are not AKC recognized, however the American Staffordshire Terrier is, and is almost indestinguishable from a pit. So if you have a pit, just tell people it is a Staffordshire and you shouldn't have any problem.
Did you notice by any chance that part of that statistic was "wolf hybrids"? Are you sure it wasn't wolves that made up the majority of that statistic? Wolves are not domesticated animals for the most part. Yes, people owned wolf hybrids, but that's more dangerous than any breed of dog. Wolves are meant to be wild creatures. A wolf hybrid isn't like any other dog. When you come across one you can instantly tell. They are beautiful, magnificent creatures, but they are not meant to be owned.
And really, what does "their close mixes" include? Would that be anything in the bully breeds? I don't know if you can even call those statistics. Statistics are quantitative and qualitative. The quantity might be exact, but the quality of what the numbers are describing is extremely vague. So what are you trying to prove?
I wish I could put this post at the top of this vine:
The only reason that pit bulls are demonized is due to the sheer force their jaws can do. Therefore, they are bought by pit mobs and unethical drug people because they are loud, strong, and small.
Fact: As was stated, Pit Bulls performed better than golden retrievers (the stereotypical family dog) on pleasing their owners. This is another reason they are chosen to be trained for illegal protection/fighting.
Fact: Dalmations bite more than Pit Bulls do. The reason we don't hear about this much is because people are smart enough to own them where they can run and play because they are large dogs, which keeps them busy...but they are shown to be snappy. My parents owned one as newlyweds, until she tried to bite a child's face off.
If people who spout off inaccurate facts about the reasons pits were raised would actually do research, perhaps these dogs would be recognized for their abilities as leaders and protectors of children, our military and other service-related jobs, instead of as killers due to improper training. Try watching something like the animal channel sometime and listen to the Dog Whisperer, who knows more about dogs than just about anyone else.
It breaks my heart that these dogs get such a bad rap, when the same can be said about children of serial killers and rapists...their parents did it, I'm sure they will too..which is totally false.
All I can say is that the few times that I have been bitten by a dog, they were by AVERAGE DOGS!!! Any dog can be mean and bite. The worst ones are what I call the "ankle biters". These little dogs I hate and have been bit by them. Of course, when an "Average dog" bites, IT WONT GET ON THE NEWS!! It will when it's a pit. My brother and ex-husband had pits, and guess what? No problems out of them, of problems from people tried to get them to bite.
train the damn dog! for crying out loud, any dog, they are pack animals and even though they are domesticated, they still feel the need to assert themselves in the pack, this is where you must train them so they know where they belong.
i have friends who NEVER train their dogs, they grab food off the counter, tear up the trash, chew anything they can get a hold of. just crazy. they say well they are just dogs. what can you do ?
i have a very large AKC chocolate american lab. he is tall, could get anything he wants from the dining room table without jumping up.
but he does not do that.
he does not get in the garbage
i can leave a t bone steak on the coffee table he will not touch it
he only chews his (stuff)
he does not snap food from my hand
he is taught to sit while i fill his food dish, I DO NOT BOTHER HIM WHILE HE IS EATING
he barks like crazy when some one or something is out side, this is his home.
would not let a friend of a friend in my house growled and snarled at this guy.so i told the guy he could not come in. turns out unknowing to my friend this guy was a suspect in an armed robbery, and had a rap sheet as long as my arm. yeah dogs are better judges of character than people. how many times are people threatened or bitten by dogs that truly had it coming to them ?
i have never beat my dog to train him, just used positive commands and patience, showing (not telling) what i wanted him to do . like kids they want and need your attention and love to grow within your family (pack)
bottom line ? YOU as a pet owner are responsible for your dog, their training, health, and what they do.
pit bulls are no harder to train than any other breed, it's the dumb ass that owns and trains/not trains them that's the problem.
Bad breeders and stupid people cause dangerous dogs. I have a rottie who is a complete sweetie. She went to training at 10 wks old and has been socialized. I don't hesitate to take her anywhere and when she's not with me people ask about her. Pit bulls were known as "nanny dogs" in the past and used as baby sitters. Any dog can become dangerous if badly breed or mistreated. Just because they don't have the size of the rottie or pit doesn't mean that they can't cause damage. Mcdonalds is irresponsible using the dog in advertising the way they did. More people will die of clogged arteries caused by fat then will be injured by a dog.
One has to love all these dog-apologists and their total ignorance.
I noticed you used a website that doesn't even show how it reached its conclusions.
Facts are facts and you should use the CDC, not some lame "scare the public and cause people to act irrational around certain breeds" type of website. This is what leads to people being "ill -educated," ignorant and can lead to people or the animal getting hurt.
According to the CDC there are 4.5 million dog bites a years and only a portion of those (average 16) lead to fatalities. Of those, many are "unknown" breeds (roughly 4% of all fatal attacks).
In a study of identified breeds between 1979 and 1998:
- 238 fatalities
- 27% from Pit Bulls
- 16% from Rotts
- 5% from Wolf Hybreds
- 4% from Pit mixes
That is a long way from the number you use!
- 48% from other breeds!!!
It even shows that Labradors, Collies, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, West Highland Terriers, other Retrievers, Coon Hounds, Other Hounds, Sheepdogs and Saint Bernards have been involved in fatal dog attacks too........
spot on my friends, the voices of reason.....i do believe it is the Cocker spaniel that bites more than any others....got the scars to prove it.....all i did was stoop down to hook up his leash....(friends ) dog.....of course they let the dog do what it wanted, and never trained it, ended up biting one of the neighbor kids and had to be put down.....once again, a lack of training, and attention to the animal....why some have dogs that they feed and leave in the backyard and never pay any attention to them mystify s me.....
I don't know why so many of these comments are collapsed? Nothing aimed at anyone, or harmful in most of them. I don't read articles about the group Quaran Quaran because I don't care for it. I would not however, take it off the bookshelf simply because I don't agree with it. Please! If you can't toddle around with the rest of us, don't come here.
Peety from Our Gang was an American Pit Bull Terrier...He pulled a wagon with kids in it and they painted a circle on his face. I think that back in the day, the American Pit Bull Terrier was a better breed. Since that time, however, the breed has been bred down to hone the aggressive side in them. Selective breeding at its finest/worst. Get the traits you want and keep breeding. All diversity, and levelness, goes out the window.
Dogs are products of the humans that raise them. When you drive around in Bed-sty and see a Pit Bull tied to a fence and the drug dealing sack of sh!t owners beating it to make it aggressive how is that the dog's fault? If the owners are human scum the dogs will be turned aggressive. Animals like children are born with a blank slate it is the people they come in contact with that cause them to be screwed up. Like some of the "people" on this site-I would take my chances with a Pit Bull over a human any day. McD's sucks even without the ad.
@ Amanda-2017567: Where is your shelter and what is the name of it? As a bully breed lover I would love more info!
In the course of my life I've had in my family a cocker spaniel, rottweiler, rott-mix, pit-mix, and an American Bulldog. Guess which one but my brother (twice) to the point that he required stitches and has a scar to this day?
"As soon as I get done with this tattoo; me and Zeke here are gonna hop the trailer park fence and go down to McDonald's and tear somebody a new butt!"
BAd breeding and bad owners are the cause of mean pitbulls. Do some research and you all might figure that out. Pitbulls are far from the only animals that get crazy and attack for no apparent reason. Rottwiellers, dobermans, shepards, labs, etc.. all the same. Depends on the breeding and the training. I had 2 different rotts. The first was fine as a puppy. Then we had to move into a house where our male rott was not allowed inside. From 5 months to 9 months old he had to stay outside. Still spent alot of time with him and worked with his training. Once we moved into a new home that we owned he became aggressive. Growling and snapping if anyone came near his food bowl. Then he started to bite. We had to put him down. A couple of years later we were asked to take another rott, temporarily. I was afraid it would be the same story, different dog. This dog was the complete opposite of our former dog. He thought he was a lap dog. He was so in need of attention he would sit on your feet to keep you near him. If you even seemed a bit upset with him he'd pee himself. Obedient as all get out, wanted to please so badly. This dog was left outside all his life, got very little attention and was never housebroken. You couldn't ask for a more loving dog. He passed from old age with zero problems. THe difference between the 2 dogs was the breeding. Check out a pit bull shelter sometime. The most horribly abused animals can be the sweetest most loving animals you'd ever want to meet. Check out the web site for the show pitbulls and parolees. They could use all the donations and support they can get. They do a hell of a job matching dogs with the right owners. And they keep all the dogs. They don't just destroy them because they've had issues. Some dogs can't be rehabed as I have stated from my own experience. However, you shouldn't judge a whole breed by a few bad ones. The human trainers are the ones most responsible for their aggressive behavior. There should be stiff laws punishing those people that choose to train pits for fighting and attacking people.
Freaking funny SirLafaLot!!"donate to a pit bull fund" or "use a pit bull in an ad" what a lame request. It was funny. Period. There is always a grain of truth in stereotypes and this one hit close to home. I cannot recall the last time a chuhuaha chewed off a baby's testicles or killed an adult human.
Here's a video response from Pit bull owners to McDonalds. Just look at the type of depraved individuals that own these menaces to society!
God forbid we should see these vile excuses for "human beings" and "dogs" in our community. This is why I personally spend every waking minute ranting on comment boards about the threat to decency these agents of Satan represent. You can now see it with your own eyes. And there's so MANY of them! Obviously they need to be stopped!
let me tell u a story 'soexcitedicouldpee' im a plumbing contractor and i do alot of repair work in folks homes. one house in particular had a few faucets that needed replacing around the house. they had a chihuahua. it looked friendly enough the owner said don't mind her she wont bite. the next thing i know is when i reach over to scratch it behind the ear or on the belly cant remember which she bit down and latched on. it hurt like hell and i was bleeding and the thing refused to let go and i couldn't kill it cuz the customer could sue me after the fact and i didnt want to lose business from biased hearsay so was left with a rabid little rat dog on my finger whipping it's head back and forth . i eventually forcefully pried its mouth open with my free hand rather then pull on the dog itself.
my sister has a pit-bull named jack and let me tell you he is the most playful and submissive dog iv ever seen
so you tell me why just cuz a crazy pit can kill u and a crazy chihuahua cant doesn't mean ill take a crazy chihuahua over a pit cuz a crazy dog is a crazy dog. to prefer a dog over another just cuz their breed is incapable of totally rending u asunder is no reason to avoid pits and rotts . i knew a rott too that got hit by a car a few years ago. sady she was a big dumb teddybear that would walk right up to any stranger and sit on your foot and lean against you so you could give her love and attention . and no matter where you threw a basketball she'd go after it with zeal.
so ill take a good pedigree rottweiler over a left alone chihuahua who is so small that they never corrected its little behavioral ticks till it bit someone. i mean how could something that small ever cause someone harm? (sarcasm)
My husband got bit on the nose by a chihuahua when he was a kid and had to have stitches. Had a scar for a long time. My co-worker brought her Pit Bull in during our weekend shifts and that dog was so docile you almost forgot it was there in the office.
20 years ago we rescued a fighting pitty who had been confiscated from an illegal dog fighting ring. This dog was a champion fighter, four years old and undefeated named Doctor Death, yes like in the movie. That said, normally the DNR or Animal Control would have put him down because of his fighting, but when they gathered up these dogs from the ring Doc came right to them and sat on the DNR guy's leg, like he was relieved to be saved. They put him through every test including touching his food while he was eating, testing him with smaller animals and children and the worst thing he did was chase a cat up a tree... then he just walked away. They agreed to let us take him, and he was the best of the best. He loved kittens and kids, would lay his head on my shoulder when I cried, and would hide in his dog house if I shook my finger at him..lol He never showed any aggression after we moved him in with us, going so far as to letting the cat sleep on him in his doggy bed. Just so you know that cat had a far worse attitude then he since she was rescued from a dumpster. When he passed away at 14 we were as sad as if we had lost a member of our family.
I know how you felt losing your dog. my family felt that way when we lost our Daisy. We've had shepherds and dobies and boxers, muts and terriers in our lives. We now have a rednose pit bull and a labit( 1/2 pit and 1/2 lab). My daughter and her husband and kids have a pit mix. We couldn't ask for better pets. People need to realize any dog can be viscious if its made that way. Our full pit is a big spoiled baby who loves kids and cats.
After I retired in 2003, and, being single I decided to get have something alive around the apartment. I'm not a fish person, lol. I adopted a Miniature Pinscher and later became a volunteer for dog rescue. For five years I picked up, transportd rescued dogs. Picked them up from "Owner give-ups" and Animal Control shelters, taking them to new homes. Ok, that doesn't make me an expert on dogs but I've dealt with different breeds. After hearing about how vicious Pit Bulls are I was a bit leery about one trip, especially since Otto, my adopted MinPin always went with me. I picked up two Pit Bulls in Memphis, took them to Knoxville to a Pit Bull group. I thought for sure they were going to eat Otto, lol. Well, we stopped at rest stops on I-40, for dog walking, on leash. Man, as soon as they came out of the car people were grabbing kids and heading for their vehicles. Well, they ARE formidable looking animals. Hell, those two were nothing but two big babies. I had more trouble with the ankle biters; Chihuahuas and "Fluffy" dogs; Shi Tzu, Lhasa Apso, and Pekes, lol. Man, don't fool with a enraged Peke! I'll say one thing about Pitts; The breed was bred for a specific purpose, fighting. They can, and will, go off at provocation. But, for protection a Pit Bull is nice to have around. There's a bit of truth in those signs; "Premises protected by Smith & Wesson, and, Pit Bull."
Isn't it true that eating a nasty chicken Mcbite is less dangerous than petting a pit bull. Finally, some truth in advertising, and people b*tch about it.
I used to work Animal Control dispatch when I was in the welfare to work program--you had to do 20 hours of work in a government office each week if you wanted a welfare check and I picked animal control.
One night I got a call from a woman who was absolutely hysterical and the only thing i could get from her was that she went to put her trashj out and some sort of animal got between her and her front door and was preventing her from entering the house. I contacted one of the duty AEO's and asked him to stop otu there and have a look. He came back to the office at the end of his shift and told me that when he got there, the woman was hysterically crying and the 'aggressive animal' that had gotten into her yard and got between her and her front door was...a chicken.
He, being a good ol-fashioned farm-raised southern boy, taught her how to kill herself a free-range chicken dinner.
As the owner of a 100-pound Rottwieler that's gentle as a lamb, I am disgusted by some of these posts. Our two toddler grandsons order her around, ride on her back and sleep cuddled up on her. She's gentle and protective of them, and an ideal pet. Dogs are what their owners make them for the most part.
Pit Bull and Labs are all the same--you must be kidding? Then Bush and Obama are the same --about the same difference in each group??!---But there are many types of behavior in big dogs, some have too much inbreeding, so hard to say what they really are, by destroyed/lost genetics-----at least for the ones with small flies!
You know HUNDREDS of pitbull owners? Very impressive! I have lots of friends, maybe even hundreds if I counted everyone in my life but to know HUNDREDS of people with the same dog as me is bat$hit crazy! Like you!
BTW....if the only thing you can bag Sandy on is the use of bread vs. bred, you're really struggling for an argument.
This is for SKEWD, Upright,Carolenne, and the rest of you that are deluded into thinking Pit Bulls are "safe", "gentle" dogs and it is "Bad Owner" that make them , UNPREDICTABLE, VICIOUS, KILLING-MACHINES.
I personally involved in 3 cases that prove why I will never let my family anywhere near one of those animals. In all 3 cases, these were "pure bred" Pit Bulls, family pets, raised from puppies in the families.
Case 1. Me, Owner, Owner's girlfriend of several years, and several other couples are at owner house watching movies on VCR. Pit Pull is sleeping on bed in back of room as usual. Dog suddenly jumps up, jumps over sofa of people and attacksowner's girlfriend on other sofa sitting next to owner, bites owner when tries to protect girlfriend, and returns to her, owner get gun shots and kills dog. Girlfriend rushed to ER and barely survived.
Case 2. Different town, group of friends. Summer backyard cookout. About 30 peoplethere, adults and kids. Pit Bull is restingby owner's feet next to grill on patio next to house. Several kids playing quietly in "sand box" on other side of patio. Other running around playing/yelling in yard. Pit Bull suddenly gets up, walks though group of parents, the attacks 3 year old toddler playing in sandbox from behind. Luckily one of parents is local sheriff's deputy that came directly form work and has service firearm on person. Shots and kills Pit Bull. 2 of other parents were volunteer EMT and RN, EMT had a "kit" in car. Only reason kid survived, but was maimed for life.
Case 3: Family with 3 kids, 6, 4, 18 months. Had Pit Bull since first kid was born. Said it was most "loving and gentle" dog and loved the kids. Dog slept on bed in parents bedroom. One night Killer Pit Bull gets up in middle of night, walks pasted open door of older kids room, breaks through closed bedroom door of 18 month old and attacks toddler in crib. Pit Bull has RIPPED BABY TO PIECES before parents can get there. NO!! they weren't drunk, stoned, or "busy".
Now, you can believe whatever delusions you want to about those killers. But I will shot every one that come within range of me or my family again.
You know HUNDREDS of pitbull owners? Very impressive! I have lots of friends, maybe even hundreds if I counted everyone in my life but to know HUNDREDS of people with the same dog as me is bat$hit crazy! Like you!
I volunteer with (and used to work at) an inner-city Animal Control/animal shelter facility.. We take in 12,000-15,000 animals a year between owner surrenders, cruelty cases, and Animal Control violations. About 65% of what we take in is pits because we're the only shelter in the area that will accept and temperament test before deciding to euthanize.
Out of all those intakes, adoptions of pits average abut 2,000 a year. The office staff meets with each prospective new owner personally, and no pit is adopted out unless we meet the entire family first--adults and children. We have a mentorship program; the volunteer who helped the adopter make a particular selection makes themselves available to the adopter after the dog is adopted so that if the adopter has any questions about the dog, its prior home situation, its behavior, they can call the volunteer day or night. Think of it as 'tech support'. So yes, its not outside the realm of possibility for longtime staff and shelter volunteers to have a wide network of pit owners--I've been working and volunteering for five years now and my 'little black book' has 200+ dog and owner names and phone numbers in it.
I don't understand why people think that Pit Bulls are the only animals that can do these kind of things.
I lived with extended family for 8 months. My cousin would have to lock her Chihuahua in her bedroom when I came home otherwise the dog would attack me. I have scars all over my legs from that monster. She had just gotten the dog a couple of months before I moved in. You would think it would have gotten used to me. Now I'm terrified of chihuahuas, even though I know they aren't all like that.
I was walking my small husky pup on a leash in the courtyard of our apartment complex. We walked by a guy walking his Golden Retriever, also on a leash. With no warning the Golden starting mauling my dog. She was terrified and immediately started crying and submitting but the Golden would not release his grip on her. The guy had to fight his dog to get him off of her. Thankfully, the guy keeps a muzzle on his dog when he walks him to this day. He said that his dog has never attacked any other dog or person ever. He was just an old and lazy dog. They also had an English Bulldog in their home and the dogs were always at the dog park socializing.
When I was 8 I was playing in a relative's back yard with my cousins at a family gathering (we were probably playing dolls or something similar). There was a Black Lab that lived at the house and he was just lounging in a different part of the back yard. All of a sudden he charges me and chomps down on my behind. He wouldn't let go and he kept trying to toss me around. One of the adults had to hit him in the head with a baseball bat to get him off. He broke the skin so I had to go to the ER and get shots and stitches.
I have an idea! Let's make all Chihuahuas, Black Labs and Golden Retrievers extinct too!
Obviously I'm just kidding. Even after the traumatic experiences I've had with dogs, I still love all of them more than humans. I work with a local dog rescue and I personally take in as many of the unwanted pups as I can. I have never seen a single one of my animals show aggression towards me or anyone I know. I have, however, been warned by my dogs that a certain person is not to be trusted. And they have never been wrong. My Rottie is the best judge of character I have ever met. And the only time he goes for anyone's face is if he is trying to lick them to death.
The ad was as dumb as the ad Mercedes used of Che Guevara at the auto show. Do we need to be reminded to eat the trash at MacDonalds. The last two times I at ate a MacDonads 10 and 6 years years ago I got violently ill.
The first time I thought it was just an accident. Something didn't agree with me.
The second time, I knew they had put something in the food, my system couldn't accept.
@htdjpf - If you are going to do a dissertation on "The Pitbull - A Killing Machine" you should probably acquire better writing skills. As far a I know, most people don't "shot" guns. And quite honestly, I think I may be more leery of you than the 4 pitbulls I own - you seem to hang around with alot of people who have fire arms available at a moments notice. Better hope one of them does not suddenly blow a fuse! Please note: in two of your "stories" you were there; maybe you are the trigger! Consider yourself lucky that the "killer Pitbulls" clearly missed their target. Also, I loved the last story; you should write a screenplay - can't wait to see what the killer pit looks like as he "walks pasted" the open door of the older kids room.
Enjoy spending the rest of your life being scared of a wonderful breed of dog. Word of warning - if you do encounter one in the wild, do not run from them. They can be extremely fast and will most likely run you down and lick you to death!
Besides the fact that if you looked hard enough you could find scenarios for alot of animals that have snapped over the years, singling these three out becasue they reinforce your opinion doesn't make a strong argument, if they are even true.
Now, you can believe whatever delusions you want to about those killers. But I will shot every one that come within range of me or my family again.
clewis, htdjpf's empirical evidence might not support your belief that pit bulls are just fine, but that doesn't make it untrue. So, I've dug up some reports of babies who were killed by pit bulls, all reported by reputable, verifiable news agencies:
Kalamazoo, MI - reported by UPI
Amarillo, TX - CBS affiliate
Conyers, GA - ABC affiliate (Atlanta)
Arlington, FL - CBS News (National)
New Port Richey, FL - Lakeland Ledger
West Haven, CT - Hartford Courant
I'm gonna bet there are way more, since all those popped up with a single Google search (only used 1st page of results, too). In all fairness, other dogs kill babies, too, but it's not some fairy tale that pit bulls kill babies. I guess we're all pretty comfortable as a society with the "collateral damage" of dead babies, when it comes to pit bull ownership.
True, pure bred American Pit Bull Terriers are a fantastic breed. The pit bulls that most are familiar with are in-bred, cross-bred animals that are dangerous. Much like the difference in a true GERMAN German Shepherd vs. the bred for show American variety. Totally different temperments.....
But.... where is the outrage from the Pit Bull clubs over the "discrimination" of insurance companies? Many Homeowners policies charge extra or won't even cover you with certain breeds.......
We have lost our sense of humor..... get real... spend your efforts on something important......
Very True! I personally experienced being asked to remove my sweet lovable pitbull from a residential premises and someone literally had a wolf...funny world
DALLAS - A Texas family says their pet pit bull helped protect their missing 3-year-old after she wandered away and got lost in the woods.
Little Zoey Smith is bubbly and chatty. It’s hard to tell she survived the six-hour ordeal alone with only her dog Brownie.
“I’m so glad that we found her and that she came back because that usually doesn’t happen. And, she’s my angel and I wouldn’t know what to do without her,” said Stephanie Smith, the girl’s mother.
The toddler was playing outside Thursday afternoon at her grandmother’s house in rural Van Zandt County. She told investigators she wandered away because she was following Brownie who was chasing a raccoon.
She describes going through water.
“I got wet and I was cold,” Zoey said.
A team of volunteers and law enforcement agents kept up an intense search after the sun went down. Zoey was found just after 7 p.m. about a mile and a half away from where she was last seen.
Jason Smith and his son had jumped on their four-wheelers to help search their property.
“I walked up to her and I said 'Hey' a little bit loud and she just kind of looked at me. And she said, ‘I’m cold. I’m cold.’ She just kept saying that. That’s what I think she was saying. And for a split second I saw a grin on her face,” he said.
“I was happy, happy,” Zoey said.
Jason Smith said Zoey’s dog was very protective of her and at first wouldn’t even let him get close. He points out it was clear Brownie never left her side.
At least the humans who are crying over a commercial due to them being overly sensitive. Get a life. It's one commercial which I'm sure will not rock their lives one way or another.
Now all you pitt bull owners, go home and kiss your dog in the face and I hope you don't end up at the ER for stitches.
Good examples. The apartment complex where I live won't allow dogs over 35 pounds, and, no PitBulls. One young couple had one, and had a eight or nine year old daughter. The dog would get out simetimes and the other tenants would panic, "That thing will kill all of us!" That dog would run up to my dogs and I, when I was walking them, was nothing but a playfull dog. One time he was out and I took him home. The little girl started chasing him and hitting him with a plastic bat. The dog would just look at the her, like; "That's right, just keep it up, just keep it up." I told the parents that the dog might go off on the kid. "No, no, she does that all the time, he loves it." We hear all the time about how some Pit Bull mauled a kid, but you don't hear about what the kid might have been doing. Ok, a kid is more important than a dog, but for safety sake parents need to educate their kids about dogs. It's simple, a kid sees a dog, leave it alone. I have three now, two Miniature Pinschers and one Toy Dachshund. When I walk them kids comes running; "Doggies, doggies!" My dogs are used to kids, but most dogs, not used to kids, seeing that mess coming at them will think they are being attacked.
You are right mellowfello. The insurance companies do charge more or refuse to insure certain dogs. I was about to have to take my ex-husband's Malamute & had to look into insuring him. they are okay but I was suprised that cocker spaniels are considered dangerous. The smaller dogs are more prone to bite. My cousin had a rottweiler who was the sweetest thing in the world. I have had neighbors with rotts and pits and do know if the animals are trained they are no problem.
Btw, since I can't respond directly to gordo...yes the owner's breding in most cases is questionable. Tehy don't all live in trailer parks and chew "tobaccy" though. Some have nice homes paid for from the profits of dog fighting and puppy mills.
Every 5 years or so another large breed dog is branded as a "bad" breed. There was the German Shepard, the Chow, the Doberman Pincher, the Rottweiler, the Pit Bull, and on and on. Guess what breed is labeled the most aggressive? The Dachshund. Every breed has the potential of being aggressive and even dangerous. The difference is that larger breeds have the potential of causing the most harm if they do attack. I've never been bitten by a large dog, but have been bitten by my miniature Schnauzertwice. Both times it was because I got in the middle of her fighting with my Dachshund. My fault. I have known and owned a couple of the "dangerous" larger breeds and for the most part, they've been loving, faithful, and gentle. Only one had a tendency to be aggressive and you knew to be careful given certain scenarios. You hear more about Pit attacks partially because of the stigma and partly because if they do attack, they inflict more damage. You tend not to hear about smaller breed attacks because people generally don't report them since they don't usually cause as much harm (relatively speaking). Educate yourself, be respectful of unfamiliar dogs until you know their temperament, teach your children how to properly behave around animals and the chances of harm are significantly reduced. I'm not one to get up in arms over things, and I haven't seen this commercial, but I do believe it to be irresponsible and unknowingly continuing an unfair stigma against pits. You can't put a breed under one label any more than you can put all people under one label. Everyone has different backgrounds and personalities.
There have been many comments that are right on. In many cases it is the owner who needs to be trained more than the dog. In my community we have leash laws, but at least half the dog owners ignore these laws and simply yell at their dogs when someone walks by and their dog runs out of the yard to check that person out (and their dog if they are walking their dog.) What do they expect the dog to do when someone walks by-sit there and do nothing?
One guy had two pit bulls, the male was on a leash but the female was not, when I walked by with my shetland sheepdog. Of course, the female ran straight out to us. We both froze initially by instinct. The owner came out of his garage and stood close to us, watching us intently, holding the male dog on his leash. He told me not to worry, the dog was fine and wouldn't do anything. I turned to walk away, but he suddenly said, "Don't move!" Obviously, he wasn't THAT confident that his dog wouldn't do anything. I know from experience that you can't interfere with a dogfight without getting bitten yourself-when I was growing up in Mississippi we saw many dogfights and we would spray the dogs in the face with a hose to get them to stop, and even that didn't work very well. So my dog and I stayed frozen while this female pit bull thoroughly checked us out. We only moved when she decided we were not a threat (I guess) and moved away. I never walked down that street with my dog again. It doesn't matter what kind of dog the guy had-I really don't get it why that guy wouldn't obey the leash law if he had the slightest concern that his dog might attack another dog or a person; and he was obviously very concerned that his dog might do something to us!
BTW, I'm not blaming the dog or the breed. I mention the breed because it's relevant to the story and because it made the dog large, intimidating, and capable of doing a lot of damage. But basically she was just being a dog-trying to protect her owner and her property. I blame the owner, who was not obeying the law and keeping his dog on a leash. He also could have invested in some better dog training. We have had several shelter dogs, one of which was a bull terrier mix (not a pit bull), and I also agree with those who have said that some dogs can be rehabilitated and some cannot for whatever reason. Two of our shelter dogs could not be rehabilitated despite intensive work with dog trainers and even a behaviorist. One was a breed that is not at all considered an aggressive breed normally-they said it was likely due to bad breeding and abuse earlier in the dog's life.
A lot of people spouting off about pits wouldn't know a pit bull if it jumped up and bit them in the a$$ (pun intended). I've seen people call lab mixes and hounds 'pit bull', my neighbor's American Bully is frequently called a pit bull, and the Mastiff mix down the street, you guessed it, 'It's a pit bull!' A pit bull is an average sized dog, weighing 30 to 70 lbs. In the right hands, it is one of the most stable, loyal, affectionate, and playful breeds out there. Bites can happen with any dog, but, as I've read someone's comment about dismemberment of a human being, pits aren't physically capable of dismembering someone. I have dogs around all the time, mostly pit mixes, but the only time I got bitten was by a yellow lab.
Pitbulls are not the most violent dog breed, but they are the most powerful of the breeds that are prone to mauling, attacking, etc. Plenty of smaller breeds are even more aggressive, but there arent rampant injuries due to their petite physique. Some dogs are going to be crazy no matter what breed they are or how they're raised, much like humans. Some humans are mentall ill, and some pitbulls or other species are 'mentally ill'. In any case, if you actually look at the statistics this whole fear is overblown. Were talking about less than hundreds of attacks by all species, not thousands, and even though the majority of the injuries are caused by pit bulls (2nd rottweilers), one should consider a majority of barely anything is even less (however confusing, you get my point). Those statistics don't mean pits are the most violent, it just means they have the most follow through when they do attack, because they're physical beasts. That's where the true fear lies, people realize that they COULD be destroyed by a creature such as a pit, so they preemptively label them vicious and try to rid the world of them once again due to our irrational fear. You should worry more about the abusive owners who often prefer pits rather than the pits themselves.
I have a doctorate, 3 houses, a jaguar, and a pitbull. I do not eat at McDonalds-would not feed their items to my pitbull. But your ignorance is showing.
Don't let the jaguar near the pit bull! Ol' Zeus might take a whoppin'! Three trailers parked together, and a recipe for meth is NOT making your case sound any better.
Just kiddin'. Glad your dog hasn't killed anything yet.
A pitbull, excellent choice!3 houses. wow thats smart. and a jaguar, another good buy! awesome! but wait...Didn't i read somewhere a few months back were a pregnant hospital worker got home and her "pitbull" killed her?
Why is peoples ignorance showing exactly? Because they are afraid of dogs that are commonly used by stupid people in dangerous ways? I get its wrong to judge an entire species of dogs because of the actions of a few stupid people but when the only time the media ever acknowledges these dogs is when its some kind of attack or illegal dog fighting thing you really cant blame people for not liking them. Oh and by the way maybe I have a doctorate own my own island, a space shuttle and have 3 tigers as pets. But then again maybe nobody cares because it really has nothing to do with the original story
I'm sorry, but do you have a doctorate degree in "pit-bull" behavior? If not, then your so called expert opinion would be as useless as your facts. Statistics and scientific research have proven that pit-bulls are indeed dangerous. They were bred to assist hunters when hunting other animals. Why not say that to the thousands of people maimed by this animal? Perhaps your perspective on this animal would be changed. In my opinion, I believe that the breeding of these animals should become illegal.
Sure you can. Instead of seeing first hand that most of them, just like our species, is of no threat.
Instead, people wish to be told what to believe and think. It's actually quite sad.
By reading these posts, you would think that nearly every person here was attacked by a Pit Bull. When most likely, none of them have and are just reacting to isolated news stories. Or in one posters case, a neighbors dog attacked a child who was most likely messing with it while it was eating.
oppel175 I dont disagree entirely with you, yes they are bred for a purpose but there are plenty of other types of dogs bred for hunting and they dont attack people. To make the breeding of a species illegal could possibly render them extinct or more than likely cause even more hostile enviroments for the dogs to be bred in due to criminals breeding them in absolutely horrendous conditions simply for profit which would make them even more volatile in the future.
Pit bulls were originally bred to be nanny dogs because of their eagerness to please and absolute willingness to do just about anything the owner asked of them. A genetic quirk gave some of them larger adrenal glands and enabled them to withstand pain bettwe, and some idiot thoguth hey, lets bred them as fighting dogs, and backayrd breeders started selectively breeding for larger and larger adrenal glands while corssing retrivers and other watchdog-type breeds the end result is today's backyard-bred dog; pit-bull dominant but a Heinz57 mutt underneath with enlarged adrenal glands, a bred-in-the-bone willingness to please its master and a taught hatred of anything not considered part of its pack. Not all of them are like this, some just don't have that spark in them that pushes them into agression, but many backyard-breds do.
Hey Amanda-2017567.......In regards to one of your other postings - Keep fighting the good fight and keep spreading the good word. It would be nice if we had a majority that had your kind of mindset! We seriously have problems in this world - I mean, really, what kind of people would pour battery acid on a dog and throw him out the window of a moving car? We definitely need harsher laws to protect ALL animals in this country, and all over the world. Scumbags like this guy that poured the acid on the dog need to be locked up for a minimum of at least 25 years because there is NO excuse for that kind of act, and people that are capable of performing this kind of sick and twisted abuse to a dog should not be allowed to roam free in society!! OK, I will stop ranting on that. I just really want to say thank you for sticking up for our furry 4-legged friends! In peace.
Dogs are rated as "Man's best friend." Too bad it doesn't work in reverse. We live in harsh economic times, a guy gets laid off or fired, he goes home and beats the dog! A guy goes on a date and doesn't get "Lucky" so he goes home and beats the dog, a kid is made to walk the dog, gets it out of sight and picks up a stick, beats the dog. What do the dogs do? They continue to trust and love the owners. I picked up a dog once from a shelter, it had been tied up in a back-yard, in the cold and rain, thrown scraps of food. Finally some neighbors reported the abuse and Animal Control came and took the dog away. When I went in his "Cell" he just cowered in a corner. Well, I took him to a foster home and he was adopted. I heard later that people had come to the shelter looking for him; "You people stole our dog, we're gonna sue!" Well, lol, dogs may be man's best friend but Man sure isn't dogs' best friend, not when dogs are considered just something alive to vent anger on.
Camille, if you truly had a doctorate, you'd know that Jaguar is capitalised. Provided, of course, that you are referring to the automobile.
If you own a large carnivorous cat, then you're insane. They belong first in the wild and then in zoos if for some reason they cannot live in the wild.
EDIT: Reposted from below so MadCow's comments make sense for people who don't have time to read all the way down:
Having worked at an inner city Animal Control office , I can tell you that as far as VDHB (Vicious Dog Hearing Board) cases go, we saw more Labs, Chows, and Chihuahuas than pit attacks. Here's an example of the current open cases we have right now:
Chow bit someone's child's arm.
Chow ate someone's cat. Yes, ate--was snacking on the cat's intestines when found.
Chihuahua bit a mailman's ankle.
Poodle bit a child's cheek when the child ran up to pet it.
Pit bull bit a man's arm--turns out the man was trying to tie the female to a rape rack to forcibly breed her to a fighting dog.
Pit bull bit a woman's cat, didn't kill it. Cat now tailless.
Pit bull bit a woman's poodle--the poodle tried to attack it. (dumb poodle.)
Pug bit man's penis--man was drunk and molesting dog. Dog arrived at Animal control with rectal prolapse, had to be euthanized immediately because refused to let ANY human touch it.
We also have a small file drawer at the office for a VHB--Vicious Human Bast**d:
Man poured battery acid on pitbull and chucked dog out of car in middle of highway.
Man doused dog with gas and set on fire when dog refused to fight (This one made national news)
Man doused cat with gasoline and set it on fire (made news too)
Man had two dogs left from litter, clubbed one to death and left decomposing corpse sitting on basement floor right in front of last remaining dog.
Man who molested his dog--see last item above.
Man who left female dog tied out in backyard and starved her to try make her mean enough to fight. She refused to fight--had one puppy, not tied up, who would catch rats and bring them back to Mom so Mom could eat.
To make a long story short--Dogs have more to fear from us than we do from them.
@ Amanda: You're post disgusted me. Not the post itself, but the horrible acts that you list that "people" have done, and continue to do, to animals. While I know that animals and children are different, I believe that in a lot of ways they are they same. They love unconditionally, they cannot protect themselves against man (only if within biting range), and their abuse is rampant in horrific ways. What shocks me is that "normal" people who would never think to do those type of things to a child, or anyone else for that matter, do not pause when it comes to acting out on an animal! I don't get it! As long as evil people are in the world (and the ones described above cannot be described as anything else), the torment and torture of animals and children will continue. Every once in a while, they can strike back though in one way or the other.
Jake Vernon was groggy and in pain. The 32-year-old had been paralyzed in a car accident 10 years earlier, and he had recently broken his right leg. On the morning of St. Patrick's Day, he took some medication he had been prescribed and tried drifting off to sleep.
But his dog Gracie Bean really wanted him to wake up. She yipped and yowled and ran around and around. Vernon told her to knock it off. "I even swatted her a few times and told her to lay down and be good," he told PeoplePets.com.
Finally, though, Gracie prompted him to wake up enough to see that his bed's headboard was on fire. The flames were spreading to his pillows and blankets, and they would soon engulf his entire Spokane, Wash., home. Vernon had to struggle to get out of bed, into his wheelchair, out his back door and down his home's only wheelchair ramp. Gracie, an American pit bull terrier, stayed completely calm and remained by Vernon's side throughout the ordeal. Vernon survived with some minor burns and wounds on his legs. "What was so crazy was my dog was not afraid of the fire," he said. "My dog walked right between me and the fire and stayed right there."
Sean-1817205, I seriously doubt you would know what to do if I lived next to you. You are probably one of those people who think your pit would never hurt anyone.
You, like my neighbor probably think that a shock collar is all that is required to train any dog. You are an ass!
I have a neighbor who has 7 --- kept in inhumane ways and we've taken him to court once already because of one male pitbull has charged either my husband or myself on three different occasions The third being when a city police had been called and the pitbull was coming after him; My only regret was when the cop pulled his gun and aimed, my husband threw up his arms to ward the dog off (dog changed directions and started heading for my husband, decided to run back into his yard.) Cop didn't get the chance to shoot him. My;elderly neighbors are afraid to even go into their back yards; So TRY to tell me what wonderful dogs this breed is.. and I can cite news articles, one by one, where the pitbull has maimed and or killed their owners or neighbors; I say BAN THEM!
Janet you're an idiot. Rather sad that you can't see that the owner is the problem not the animals. Animals are like children you ignore it and leave it alone for ungodly amounts of time it can get nasty or it can hold out hope that someone will love it and still love the abuser. It's not the animal's fault it doesn't understand what it's doing is wrong it only knows what it had to teach itself. Maybe you could pull your head out of your ass and do research. Pit bulls were raised to be nanny dogs because of their eagerness to please their owner and attentiveness to children. It was only when some moron decided that because of their high tolerance that 'Hey lets breed them to fight!" Thus starting the downward spiral of a good breed. My regret is that people like you exist that could easily condemn an animal to death because it had to fend for itself thanks to an neglectful owner. Humans can have bad apples too but do we condemn everyone? No we just take 15 to 20 to finally put them down. I say ban people like you who'd rather live in their media induced pit bulls are evil coma.
I took a puppy away from a kid who was trying to drown it. It was the cutest thing. I took it to a vet and got its baby shots, then a few months later took it back for boosters. I asked the vet if he had any idea what breed of dog it was. He laughed and said it's a pit bull.
By that time I was in love with it. To me, it was the sweetest, most loving dog I had ever owned. Also the most intelligent, by far. But that dog was a killer and for the next 8 years I had to live in such a way that no one was ever exposed to that dog. No mistakes, no accidents, no forgetting -- ever. She died early of cancer and although it broke my heart, a part of me was relieved.
I don't believe those animals should continue to be bred.
@Cassie - you had a 'killer' dog since it was a pup and had it for 8 yrs and had to keep it away from everyone???? Either you weren't a responsible owner and socialized and trained it like any dog should be or you don't have a clue and don't deserve to own ANY kind of dog.
we humans distinguish ourselves from animals by reasoning and we have more grey matter animals are animals regardless of the training they act by instinct; it is not its intention to harm and we humans harm it is their intention that is why human are more dangerous than animals I would rather chain a animal than a human jaja
Wow, so the dog never did anything but you were scared for nothing...only got scared when you found out it was a pitt. Its sad that the dog can love yu and not judge you from what it heard and you couldnt. You sound real stupid and ignorant
Carnegie, PA - Jimmie Belchick is a proud Pit bull owner.
Belchick knew that his dog, Cobain, was "a good dog", but just how good became beautifully apparent on Saturday when the dog turned into a hero.
While out on a walk this past weekend, Cobain became aware of a woman in distress.
According to Belchick, Cobain "put Lassie to shame" when he ran to alert his guardian to the problem.
Cobain had found an elderly woman crumpled at the bottom of a ditch near a senior center. The woman had fallen in an area that made her presence difficult to see.
Thanks to Cobain's keen nose and his ability to alert his guardian, the woman was spotted and Belchick was able to dial 911 to get aid from the authorities.
Though the elderly woman was transported to a nearby hospital, she is expected to be okay.
Thanks entirely to a heroic Pit bull who was able to capture his guardian's attention when it mattered the most.
cassie, you must have tortured that dog or something, would you have preferred the dog be obedient and when a stranger breaks in your house and kills you because you didn't think that the dog should attack ANYONE !? real smart !
It's strange to hear all the horror stories about pittbulls. I owned one that was brought into my home and abandoned. At first I felt rather pissed off and put out but she sort of saved me. I found out she had an auto-immune disorder and had to take prednisone every day for a horrible rash and I had to force her to take it, but she took it and never tried biting me. She was abused and I believe someone tried to fight her. The thing about Tasha was that she was never shown any affection whatever and was very clingy and would sit up underneath me to cuddle and all she wanted was to be loved and to love unconditionally. When we went for our daily walks she never growled at other dogs but they growled at her, especially the littler dogs who knew they could get away with it because they had their owners back. Those dogs to me have the worst temperaments. Tasha unfortunately got cancer and died painfully. I miss her still and am very thankful for the several years she graced my life. I would definitely own another pit. She was pure love even though she was scarred through what she'd gone through before she came to me.
@Cassie - I went through a similar situation with my pit. I adopted her from a rescue group when she was a couple months old. They told me she was a "bulldog mix" and me, not knowing enough or doing enough research, took that at face value. It's pretty sad when the "rescue group" feels compelled to not use the name "pit bull" and skirt around the dog's breed - just goes to show how much fear truly is associated with owning a pit. Anyway, I also took her to the vet and after a few months, went back for boosters, when I asked if they knew what kind of "bulldog" mix she was (English, American, etc.). The vet tech looked me straight in the eye and said "this is a red nose pit bull and she looks pretty much full-blooded to me." I'm not going to lie, I was in a slight panic. Not so much because my dog was a pit bull, and I automatically thought that it would now hurt or kill me (which never crossed my mind because I knew she was a good dog and very sweet), but more about the fact that I was living in an apartment with breed restrictions. Since then, the fact that I own a "pit bull" has been a constant battle, between finding housing, pet sitters, even having friends over who are afraid of her because they know she is a pit. After doing a ton of research a little too late (research BEFORE you adopt), I knew I had to be a responsible dog owner and well-train my dog to control her and prove she is a good dog, no matter what society thinks. It has been a uphill battle all the way, and although I love her with all my heart, I don't think I would have adopted her had I known in the beginning she was a pit bull - which is so sad, because I do believe these dogs deserve a chance. Looking back, I should have researched which breed would be best for me, and I can't say that a pit would have been it (however, that said, a chihuahua or yorkie wouldn't be my top choices, either). It is truly a challenge to own a pit bull, and not so much a challenge from the dog, she's wonderful, but from the rest of the world. It all comes down to responsible research and education, and above all, TRUTH from the organizations who claim to be dog lovers and advocates for abandoned/abused animals. Pit bulls are not for everyone, like any breed, and just because a shelter wants to save dogs from being put down, does not give them the right to conceal what type of dog it really is - that just makes the problem worse and continues the cycle of bad owners who don't want to put in the time and effort to really learn about their dog and train them. In the end, yes, you have saved the dog from death, but you greatly increase the chances for that dog to end up uncontrollable and dangerous to other animals/humans because the owner wasn't well-informed or prepared. I have had my pit for seven years now - she's a great dog and am glad that I chose to become a responsible pit owner instead of giving up. But I do caution anyone considering a pit bull to research, research, research all about the breed first. They can be amazing dogs, but you need to know what you're getting into, since you will receive open criticism and hostility due to people's misconceptions about the breed, not to mention legal issues such as insurance, housing, counties who have breed bans, etc.
I am sorry but I disagree with your statement that Pit Bulls are dangerous. They can be wonderful dogs. They just need the right owner. I have worked with many of these dogs and have had wonderful experiences with them.
a pit bull is CAPABLE of so much more damage than any other breed. sure they can be a wonderful dog individually, but when they do go off as many breeds can, the mayhem inflicted is magnitudes above what the other breeds do.
why do some communities permit firecrackers but not m-80's?
wiz-kid - you are sadly mistaken. Just ask the insurance companies who specialize in risk management and charge extra premiums for owners of pit bulls and the likes. Did someone wiz on you?
Any large dog can do serious damage. I once helped a girl that was almost killed by a Lab. She is still trying to get out of debt after paying for have her face fixed.
I certainly agree the owner has a lot to do with it, but no one says this about say, basset hounds. When we keep having to qualify who is responsible for the behavior of a certain dog breed, you have to get back to the dog sometime.
My kid was bitten by a cocker spaniel (and then of course I heard ten stories about vicious cockers), so I'm not going to say pits or rots are the only dangerous dogs there are, but when you're talking about dogs that were bred to fight, you have to acknowledge we're on a different level of dog. The sentiment behind the McDonald's ad doesn't come from nothing.
So by all of you pit-bull haters impromptu reasoning for getting rid of this breed, you would also basically say that we need to imprison and euthanize every Black and Mexican person in America, since statistically their violent crime numbers are much higher and that is all that we see on TV right in regards to their ethnicity right?
Now, do you see how asinine and flawed your reasoning is? My pit-bull, Snooki, is a 60lb lap dog that loves playing with my kids and when not playing sits underneath me in order to just be close to me. She gets along great with my labit (lab pit mix) that we rescued from the "hood" and is super excited to see anyone willing to give her some love and attention. As most owners have noted, my pit and my pit mix are eager to please us through tricks and general love and affection. Also I bought my pit-bull from a guy in the middle of one of the roughest parts of my city, so it is in them to be great and loving pets regardless of their surroundings.
Pit bulls, and dogs in general, are as dangerous as their owners make them. Put the blame where it belongs....on STUPID, IGNORANT, UNCARING, UNCOMPASSIONATE idiots who have no business having a pet.
ChristianTheIslamicJew - I take it your Islamic. I guess that means you are dangerous since one Islamic who is bad or dangerous means all others are too.
txpanhead- You can't just blame the owners just like you can't call all dogs of a certain breed dangerous. I had a German Shepherd/Pit Bull mix who was a real sweet heart. She was very friendly but would hide if you sneezed too loud. She did warn me though when someone entered the house and I was sleeping. She didn't attack, just growled and barked until she saw it was my then husband.
We now have a dog who isn't friendly to outsiders and she wasn't raised to be that way. She is a German Shepherd/Black Lab/Dalmatian mix. We have never raised a dog to be aggressive, but she has turned out to be that way to anyone not living in the house... and we don't know why she is like that.
I personally don't trust chihuahuas. Most are yappy and you never know if they are going to bite. I've known several people who owned chihuahuas that were very mean and didn't let anyone pet or get near them except their owners.
Getting bit by a pitbull can be treated by a doctor and most bites require minimal, if any doctors care at all. However, eat the poison they serve at McDonalds for any amount of time, then a life long battle with obesity, heart disease and even diabetes is in your future. That is what the Ad should say.
JR...Right on! It would be interesting to know how many people have been harmed (health issues) or have died from junk-food Vs pets? I won't speculate on a ratio, but I'm reasonably certain it would be shocking.
Jesse, if you are MAULED by a pit pull you will usually lose BODY PARTS. Pit Bulls were breed to rend whatever animal it is attacking until it bleeds to death and stop moving.
Robert-2589118 I guess you haven't got a clue, dogs have personalities like people. Like the one that killed the newborn infant in its crib. less than a few days home from the hospital and the dog killed the baby. Dogs are individuals and from the feeling and seeing that Pitts have a more than minor issue with their attitude. About insurance if someone's dog kept biting people and killed someone's kid, the insurance coverage would be the last of the owners worries.
Sandy, Missouri: Actually, Pits where only used to fight other dogs/animals. Those that showed even the slightest aggression towards humans, where culled, right there and then.
Pits can snap, just like any other dog, but to claim that they were bred to destroy every being they encounter, is completely wrong.
"Bad dogs" have come and gone: Shepherds, Rotties, Dobes, Huskies etc. Lately it has been the Pits "lucky" turn.
Just like all breeds, they certainly arent for everyone. Actually, this goes for ANY and ALL pets. People whom arent able to properly care for another living being, should never own any pet at all, regardless if its a Gold fish or a dog.
Lol, Jessie. Hey, McD's is my place to eat and I've never fallen ill from the "Poison" served there. I bet you hate WalMart too. And, K-Mart, and other big greedy and rich chains.
Tx, my post didn't make any sense? Ok, so, you're pretty sure that they serve poison at McD's, right? And, you're also sure that WalMart haters don't branch out and leap on other popular places? I hope you don't like Target because when they take over WalMarts position all the WalMart haters will become Target haters. Anyway, like I had stated, I eat at and from McD's all the time and know a lot of folks that do, so far so good, no poisoning. Something else I'll predict; When all the McD haters are bored they'll be going after Burger King and then on and on, maybe even to Wendys and Pizza Hut. Why? For one thing it's cool and "With-it" to go after the "Big boys" in any retail area, be it the "Big box" places or fast-food places. If you claim I didn't make any sense because I was off topic, ok, it's cool, but, Jessie brought McD's into the topic, I didn't.
I am very glad they pulled the ad and where apologetic. Pit Bulls can be great dogs if they are with good people. I have worked with many dogs and Pit Bulls give me the least amount of trouble. More people have died of heart problems then from attacks.
sandy, all dogs have teeth , they are all capable of biting, humans have teeth and are capable of and have bitten humans, they say that a human bite is worse than a dog's bite !
Swan37 - You go right ahead and take your chances at Mickey D's and leave us Pittbull lovers alone. There is nothing wrong with these animals. Any animal raised in a loving home and environment will get along with others, be it other dogs, cats or children. I'm a testament to that. My pittbull was best friends with my cat Stinky. They'd cuddle together and sleep together. Stinky missed Tasha when Tasha passed away. It's sickening the biased opinions of those who have never been blessed by one of these wonderful animals.
You go right ahead and take your chances at Mickey D's and leave us Pittbull lovers alone.
I don't think I've done anything to you pittbull lovers. I'm just voicing my opinion as are you.
Any animal raised in a loving home and environment will get along with others
This is simply not true. Some animals are generically aggressive and dangerous. I'm not saying that all pitt bulls are like this but clearly they can be. The problem with pitt bulls or any large breed that is statistically more aggressive is if they do attack you, they cause much more damage.
It's sickening the biased opinions of those who have never been blessed by one of these wonderful animals.
Sickening? Not hardly. The holocaust is sickening. Bias against a dog breed is just an opinion and may even be justified. If someone approaches me and my boy walking a lab I take little notice. If it's a pitt bull, I'm picking him up. Don't like it, tough.
Some animals are generically aggressive and dangerous.
You mean like lions, tigers, bears, cougars, wolfs? You don't here people wanting to end their existence or ban them. Hell, they put many such animals on the endangered species list and work to keep them around.
Bias against a dog breed is just an opinion and may even be justified.
Yeah, they used to say that about skin color too, but we are beginning to end such stereo types.
If someone approaches me and my boy walking a lab I take little notice.
Really? Even though Labs are on the CDC list of dog breeds that have killed someone? BTW, Cocker Spaniels, Retrievers, Collies and Sheepdogs (plus several other) are on that list too. Pits only accounted for 27.7% of all dog bite fatalities. That means you have a much greater chance of being killed by another breed!!
If it's a pitt bull, I'm picking him up.
And seriously, that is one of the behaviors that the CDC recommends against FOR ALL DOGS. Are you trying to get attacked by showing fear and making fast moments?
You mean like lions, tigers, bears, cougars, wolfs?
Wolfs? A dog is a wolf in case you didn't know. But I was referring to individuals within a species not specifically entire species (which can also be true).
Even though Labs are on the CDC list of dog breeds that have killed someone?
Who cares, the chances are extremely slim. Except in some strange cases, people who own labs don't do so to keep a mean tough dog. That's especially true where I live. I had a black lab for 17 years and I have known many people with labs. They tend to be pretty friendly.
Pits only accounted for 27.7% of all dog bite fatalities.
LOL! 27.7% out of how many dog breeds? There are like 170+ and that's just the AKC breeds. 27.7% is freaking huge! I won't even argue the point with you. Also I bet many of the rest are rots and so forth. Thank you for making my point!
Yeah, they used to say that about skin color too, but we are beginning to end such stereo types.
Now you are being silly. Dogs don't have the same rights as humans. Next you will argue for not having bias against car makes.
Are you trying to get attacked by showing fear and making fast moments?
Yeah I usually jerk my kid off the ground at high speed when I pick him up. NOT! In any case any dog that attacks someone for picking his kid up should be put down. And if the owner knew their dog was mean they should be banned from owning dogs.
The chances are extremely slim on pit bulls too as compared to other breeds. Think about it.......72% of fatal attacks are by other breeds.
The AKC does not recognize 170 breeds (better go back to their website and count again), but the estimated Pit Bull population is 30-40% OF ALL DOGS (roughly 31 million Pit Bulls). The largest population of any breed and yet not the largest amount of fatal attacks. Surprised? You should be....given your argument.
Still, you ignore the fact that many "trusted" breeds are on the list.
You really need to do the math and open your eyes. The CDC points out 4.5 million dog bites per years. 800,000 that require medical intervention. Only .000003% are fatal and only 27% of those are Pit Bulls (basically .0000008% - or 4 per year).
27.7% is freaking huge!
Huge compared to what? Bear attacks (7 total for 2010)? Cougar attacks (5 total for 2010)? Other breeds (12 total for 2010)? Pits have far fewer then any of these and you aren't saying we should do away with any of these animals, your not even acting the same about them.
Hell, as a breed they only have .00000007% of their population involved in fatal attacks!! That percentage is lower then @!$%#ing humans!!!!
Wolfs? A dog is a wolf in case you didn't know.
Pleaseeeeeee....A wolf is a wolf and a dog is a dog. Dogs are descended from wolfs, but you just shot your own genetics argument in the foot with that one, because wolfs are not aggressive (less then 4 attacks over the last 200 years - all 4 in extreme conditions). Next you will be trying to tell us that Foxes and Coyotes are Wolfs too.
Who cares, the chances are extremely slim. Except in some strange cases, people who own labs don't do so to keep a mean tough dog.
The chances are extremely slim for any breed, but even less for Pits. Educate yourself!
Most people do not have Pits for "mean, tough breeds." The breed is know as and called a "nanny dog" in many countries, because they put it in a room with the children and it watches over them. Interesting how you think your opinion is better is then millions of people all over the world who trust their children to this breed, but would yank your child up to presumably "save" them from one.
Fear and lack of education is the biggest concern - Something the CDC has pointed out when it comes to dog breeds!
Thank you for making my point!
Your point? Only if you want to ignore facts and play the "I'm too stupid and stubborn to learn the truth" card. Your point isn't made unless you have facts that point to large number of pit bull attacks and you don't - since when is .000000008 a large number? Since when is .0000000007 a large number.
I realize you are a woman, but just because your guy tells you it is 8 inches does not make it true and is not a reason for claiming these numbers are "HUGE!"
Dogs don't have the same rights as humans. Next you will argue for not having bias against car makes.
So you are saying that dogs should be treated the same as machines? Again, one of the reasons that dogs become a problem - because people view them as not deserving a decent life beyond feeding and watering them!
Again, this is one of the problems when it comes to any dog! I feel sorry for your kids, cause they will get bit with that attitude, fear and lack of knowledge!
So, if Pit Bulls are breed to be so aggressive (as you claim) and are the largest population of dogs (30% to 40% of all dogs), how does any human interact with them without getting attacked? Why is it that there are only 4 fatalities per year and why is it that they aren't even the top breed for number of attacks (Rotts are top)? Can't answer that one with your claim.......
Yeah, I know....you won't answer this last question because it impossible to hold your beliefs and actually answer it.
Your choice. You can educate yourself, or continue to be ignorant about dogs in general......
I was going by memory before but this times I checked. By my count it's 172 (I said 170+). Another web site says 173. Clearly you are lying. This is a habit with you as I will demonstrate.
estimated Pit Bull population is 30-40% OF ALL DOGS
LOL! You want to source that? Because it doesn't come from anywhere I could find. Certainly not the AKC. I think Labs are #1 in the US by far. Pretty much every source I could find on the web puts labs at 1.
Pleaseeeeeee....A wolf is a wolf and a dog is a dog.
They are the same species if you bothered to look it up: Canis Lupus. The dog has the variation familiaris tacked on. Also I said nothing about wild wolf attacks, bear attacks, shark attacks, sky diving accents or attacks by little girls holding lolly pops. We are talking about dog attacks so stop trying to change to subject.
So you are saying that dogs should be treated the same as machines?
I didn't say anything like that so stop with the BS. You simply like to change the subject when you are losing.
Why is it that there are only 4 fatalities per year and why is it that they aren't even the top breed for number of attacks (Rotts are top)? Can't answer that one with your claim.......
hd.allen, humans need to be bred out of existence because they are evil and alot of them are rapist, murderers, child killers, child molesters, should i keep going ?
no what we really have no need for is ignorant people such as yourself. pit bulls are such great dogs. ive never owned one but my next dog will be a pit from the villalobos rescue. i go up to our local petco every weekend. i help out with the cat adoptions. but we also have "lovaebull paws rescue" www.loveabullpawsrescue.org right there with us. i always go over to pet the pits. theyre just so wonderfull. i can tell you about one that was running down the freeway 2 weeks away from giving birth to 8 puppies. i met her last week. not only was she the sweetest thing ever but she was the most obediant dog ive seen. she even had her nails painted :) she is a great momma who never had a problem with you handling the pups. ANY BREED OF DOG can attack and be agressive. i had a lab once, jake, who had to be put down because he attacked my neighbor and caused a large amount of damage. we never even saw it coming. my mother took in my uncles german shepard and it attacked her. my friend was attacked and injured pretty badly by a golden retriever. needless to say, humans are more harm to the human race then pits will ever be.
So by all of your pit-bull hate impromptu reasoning for getting rid of this breed, you would also basically say that we need to imprison and euthanize every Black and Mexican person in America, since statistically their violent crime numbers are much higher and that is all that we see on TV right in regards to their ethnicity right?
Pits are, generally, smart. One of the reasons why they get in so much trouble is that their owners are dumber than they are or are simply lacking in common sense. However, not every pit owner is dumb, and not every pit is smart. That's how mistakes are made, but you shouldn't penalize everyone for the actions of a few. In our city it is legal to own them but your dog MUST have a license, you CANNOT have more than 2 without paying special fees/applying for permits, and there are incentives for getting your pit spayed/neutered, getting it to pass obedience class and get 'good canine citizen'-type awards.
I'm not unaware of the damage that pits can cause; I have been bitten by one before, and it was my fault--I approached a stray on the street. But I also understand that there are good ones as well as bad, just as there are good people as well as bad, and each dog, like each person, needs to be evaluated based on their own merit rather than judged and generalized as a whole. It would be like judging ALL Christians by the actions of Adolf Hitler, all Catholics because of their persecution of 'witches' during the Inquisition, like blaming ALL Muslims because of the actions of a few on 9/11.
A dog doesn't have the reasoning to figure out that ALL humans aren't bad after being mistreated by a few. We humans, however, are more than smart enough to figure that ALL dogs aren't bad because of the actions of a few, particularly since they are what we made them to be.
Compare Pit Bull owners with gun owners. A guy at work was once mugged on the street and a thin cut made across his neck. Later, he had a gun and declared that if anyone so much as frowned at him, made a move toward him, he's shooting. Same type of person gets a Pitt Bull because of the reputation, if anyone crosses him he'll order an attack. Both examples are radical, sure, but a lot of people feel that way and the dog pays the price of having a bad owner. By the way, I'm not anti-gun, I have a permit and I carry. Lol, cheaper than supporting a Pit Bull.
Maybe we should all be Mimes. Wouldn't this be a fun world to live in. Seems like everything is offensive to someone or are you all just cry babies. No wonder the rest of the world can't wait for us to fail. Sure way to ruin a country, rule yourself to death.
@Fox7859, why are you on here crying about for the opposite side of the argument? You are being a cry baby yourself. Our country is being ruined by the systematic partnership between Democrats, Republicans, and Crony Capitalism (ie, Too big to fail corporations, The Federal Reserve etc) because most people have become complacent in the rising crypto-fascist police state government that most people vote for based off of what party they cheer-lead for. It is disgusting that most people don't see that. Endless wars and continued proxy war mongering for the Military Industrial Complex and to spike our nationalistic fervor to induce our complacency, a tremendous national debt due to overboard spending on the M.I.C. and countless entitlement programs, along with irresponsible pension and medical plans bestowed onto Congress, a constantly devaluing currency related to the over-spending along with the inflation from the continued printing of money by the Federal Reserve, and lastly an ever increasing Government that wants to rule every aspect of our life from healthcare, to what we put into our bodies, to who we marry, how much of OUR own money we can keep and how we spend it, to what we can teach our very own kids.....and most remain numbed by years of worthless costly education and American Idol.
@ THX, Obviously it is alive and well, look at all the people expressing their opinions on here, including yours. McDonalds had freedom of speech same as me and you, the difference is they are more beholden to ensuring they don't piss off customers in order to ensure a steady revenue stream. Besides, we all know there is nothing safe about their food.
THX, you agreed to follow a certain set of rules when you registered here, as have we all. Failure to follow the rules means that there will be consequences...or didn't you bother to read the rules?
Freedom of speech applies within the rules of membership of this board (which is owned by another entity).
If you don't agree to their terms, then leave. No one's holding a gun to your head to making you remain or put up with the structure.
Everyone's free to leave who isn't happy. Anyone who doesn't like it, feel free to vote with your feet. (That's a polite way to say 'get out', BTW.)
Otherwise, stop your whining about freedom of speech (which you clearly don't understand) and grow up. This is how it works in the real world. If you don't believe it, go shout 'Fire' in a crowded theater and see how that works out for you. We adults will be watching the news for reports on your success. If it gets reported, that is.
I just don't buy the reasoning. Would the ad have the same teeth if it had said it is safer than petting a Labrador retriever? When was the last time we heard in the news of a l.r. attacking someone? I'm sure there are "bad" owners of these dogs as well, but where are all those related attacks? Pit bulls were bred and created for one purpose, and it wasn't to be a nice, gentle doggie.
rheoman, how did you come up with this conclusion , because of one dog ? why don't you put the blame where it belongs, with the owners. some neighbors had a labrador that was so vicous that anytime a human or other animal would walk by he would become vicous, i was so afraid to walk by there because of him.
1.) About 40 people (children) per year die by drowning in 5-gallon water pails. A person, during their lifetime, is 16 times more likely to drown in a 5-gallon water pail than to be killed by a Pit Bull.
2.) Approximately 50 children in the US are killed every year by their cribs - 25 times the number of children and adults killed by Pit Bulls.
3.) Approximately 150 people are killed every year by falling coconuts. Therefore, you are more than 60 TIMES MORE LIKELY to be killed by a PALM TREE than a Pit Bull.
4.) Each year, 350 people drown in their bathtubs. You are 151 times more likely to be killed by your bathtub than you are by a Pit Bull.
5) Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more than 800 times more likely to be killed by their caretaker than by a Pit Bull.
6) It can be estimated that for every Pit Bull who kills, there are 10.5 MILLION that DON'T!
THANK YOU! its just sad that people are so ignorant. youre more likely to die in a car accident then by that of a pit bull but people drive cars every day! ive never been afraid of pit bulls. i can say however, i am afraid of human society. the world would be so much better without people.
I really dont know how these dogs can be so loving and ready to forgive you for anything. They dont hold a grudge. all they want is love and its ignorant people who are so blind to whats really going on that dont see that. Its humans that fight these dogs. the dogs dont get together on a saturday and fight for the hell of it. its done by terribly sad excuses for human beings that fight them. for sport. for entertainment. more money. people need to be educated. They can also learn a thing or two from animals. im 16 years old and im being smarter about this than most adults. grow up people.
Don't compare "apples",(i.e Pit Bull killing Machines), to "oranges", (other causes of death). Compare Apples to Apples. i.e. Pit Bulls to other Dog Breeds in number of attacks, maiming, deaths caused, etc
Oh, can't do that. That would show the truth, that Pit Pulls are one of the most dangerous, if not the most dangerous, breed of dog. Even when you factor in number of animals in population, and such.
rheoman - Whenever I used to walk my pittbull the neighbors golden retrievers three brownstones away would try to attack her. They were insane dogs with bad temperaments. I would have to cross the street to get Tasha away from these lovable golden retrievers that snarled and lunged at her. Just because they're always characters in Dean Koontz' books doesn't make them anymore docile than other dogs.
Do they seriously expect you to believe that McDonald's chicken is safer than a pit bull? Have you seen what that stuff is made out of? It's not meat, that's for sure. It's definitely not food.
Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can speak freely and no one will take offense. ____>Freedom of speech means you are free to talk about whatever you like - with the knowledge that all will hear AND some or all may react. Freedom of speech is alive and well.
Jen, freedom of speech covers a lot of territory, some free speech is just disparaging smart-mouthing and some is genuine stating of opinions on matters of interest to a lot of people. Sometimes, frequently I think, they do overlap. Freedom of speech fades when those who crack wise and smart-mouth have to back it up face to face and to a lot of online folks, good thing the 'Net is anonymous, not having to be held responsible.
Really??...why should any business care what this woman says? She represents 1/1000th of 1% of their customer base. Besides pitbulls ARE dangerous. I know. My friends 7 yr old child has a scar on hisface to prove it. Totally UNPROVOCTED, this dog pulled away from its upper middle class owner and bit him ..... I say euthanize all the pitbulls..
A 5 year old girl in my nieces Kindergarten class was viciously attacked by a Dalmation. She was out of school for 2 months so because of that and YOUR theory regarding a breed that has in the past been known to attack ALL dogs should be eradicated? B-O-L-O-G-N-A ( in case you don't know that is pronounced BALOW-NEE)
A child at daycare bit my Grandson also buffetattitude, should we euthanize all children now? Get real. Learn how to educate yourself before making such a stupid and uneducated comment....
people attack, dogs attack, cats attack, everything attacks. should everything be eradicated? ive been attacked by a crazy bird before but im not on some rant about killing all the bird in the world. you need to learn to forgive and forget. he could have been attacked by any dog. it just so happened to be a pit.
What's with all these people who condemn pitbulls to death? Apparently you have never been around one who was properly trained and lived in a loving home. My lucy is the sweetest 120 lb. lapdog I've ever met. the worst thing she's ever done is knock my 3 yr. old down and thoroughly cover him in kisses. The ignorance of these people is overwhelming sometimes. Almost stupidity. it's the owners not the breed.
I've been bitten by dogs, cats, birds, rats, hamsters, Guinea pigs, horses, mules, chickens, goats, sheep, fish, lizards, snakes, bugs, people and one turtle.
Life bites. You just have to be ready to bite back when it does.
Guns don't kill people, people pulling the trigger of guns kill people.
Pit bulls don't attack people naturally, people who train them to be mean are the reason why pit bulls attack.
I have a friend with a poodle and a friend with a pit bull. I'll take the pit bull any day over FiFi. That little wench can rip your face off and she weighs 7 lbs !
Couldn't agree more. The problem isn't the breed of dog; it's the bozo who weaponizes it. And then there are the people who buy a physical breed of dog without doing their homework on the breed of dog. Remember all those idiots who bought dalmatian for their spoiled kids after seeing the movie? The dogs got dumped at animal shelters in droves. Why? Because the dog was nothing like the movie. You rough-house with a dalmatian and the dog will give it right back to you; the dog does not care if you're a spoiled sissy kid. One thing which can be said about responsible pit bull owners is that they don't engage in this kind of stupidity.
I'm just very partial to the working dog breed group as a whole, of which the pit bull happens to belong. My personal favorites, in no particular order: pit bull, Presa Canaria (physical resemblence to a pit bull, but great dane size), Siberian husky, and akita. They're big, they're physical, and you can count on them in the worst of circumstances. Can't say the same about metro lapdogs like poodles or metro designer dogs like cockapoos and labradoodles. If own one of these metro-dogs and find yourself in a life-or-death, kill-or-be-killed situation, don't count on your dog being able to help you; they're not made to get you out of a tough situation and can easily be rendered less than useless by one hard but less than lethal strike (like an old fashioned kick in the mouth).
Heroine doesn't kill people the pusher kills people. Prescription meds don't kill people Dr's lkill people by prescribing the meds. Fire doesn't kill people the match that causes the fore oand so on and so on. Deb if you find it dark where you are at, pull your head out of your butt and see the light. I bet you think that a dog bred for fighting should replace a more docile breed so that the owner can act big and bad. JMJ what is this country coming too?
Dearest Swan37 - I still have a scar above my lip that Blazer, my grandmother's lovable terrier marked me for life with when I was a child. I was minding my own business and I was attacked. Blazer was a mean animal and the attack was unprovoked. I am still, at 47, asked where I got this mark. No pittbull has ever attacked me. But you feel free to carry your hatred of these animals. It is your right to do so.
I don't hate any animal but at the same time I will not keep a dangerous animal or even one with the risk of being dangerous. Also a scar is far from having half your face ripped off. I don't see any reason too keep pit bulls. That's not to say their are no good ones but it's always a question mark since their are so many questionable ones. Let's face it. Most people who keep these dogs are just tying to look tough which IMO isn't a good reason to buy a dog. However it's a free country so people can do what they want. At the same time I think the punishment should be extremely severe if you choose to do so and your dog kills or severely injures someone.
Hey McDonalds and pit bull people why don't you focus on starving children in the U.S. who do not eat on the weekends because they have no food at their homes or on education to stop they cycle of low to no education and poverty. Oh wait there is no drama in that. OOppPPss!
Really open your eye to go further past your nose!
Pitbull owners defend their dogs, yet every single attack by a dog that you read about involves a pit bull. Young kids, other pet dogs, and the elderly are attacked all of the time by pitbulls.
his is unreal. No matter what sort of add you produce and throw up there. It will amuse 90% and somewhere a 10% will find something to be offended about. This is an example of the flaw of a Democracy of which spends far to long concerned about resolve ever persons slightest wine and baby fit there not happy with everything under the son. McDonald is a huge targets for these fit throwing got a make me happy 100% of the time wackoes. They should of went ahead and aired the commercial and told them to get over it. Quit being to over kill sensitive already. It will have to happen sooner or later and I rather see it sooner.
Having worked at an inner city Animal Control office , ican tell you that as far as VDHB cases go, we saw more Labs, Chows, and Chihuahuas than pit attacks. Here's an example of the current open cases we have right now:
Chow bit someone's child's arm.
Chow ate someone's cat. yes, ate--was snacking on the cat's intestines when found.
Chihuahua bit a mailman's ankle
Poodle bit a child's cheek when the child ran up to pet it.
Pit bull bit a man's arm--turns out the man was trying to tie the female to a rape rack to forcibly breed her to a fighting dog.
Pit bull bit a woman's cat, didn't kill it.
Pit bull bit a woman's poodle--the poodle tried to attack it.
Dogs have more to fear from us than we do from them.
CRY N all the time over there Doggie feelings,GROW UP ! Its a funny ,get it ? Maybe not . Get out more without your dog riding on your lap while trying to drive. There are more important things. Maybe buy a bird and complain to Windex over there funny. I love dogs by the way, I don't put sweaters on mine and talk baby talk, sinking in yet ? Great dog in the Superbowl ad (dont hate cat's either) .PEACE .GT
@floyd-335513: Pit Bulls arent the reason for attacking people. It's the pwner who trains them to do so. Pit bulls are the sweetest dogs. Golden Retriver are more likely to bite/attack people pit bulls. So get your facts straight. Don't bash on a breed til you did your research. I know more dogs than you'll ever know.
This is one of the most unneccessary complaints I have ever heard in my life. Pitbulls are in a category of vicious dogs, so any one who doesn't own them would think that & I'm jsut about 100% sure that eating anything from McDonald's is less risky than approaching & petting a Pit Bull.
Wow Jeff... I'm a pitt owner, have been for 3 years, and I haven't eaten McDonalds in years... in fact.. I haven't even had any sort of fast food for about 2 years. And the last time I consumed any fast food it was because I was drunk and I needed something to throw up. That was pretty ignorant of you to say. Way to be a jackoff, dude! :)
McDonalds was absolutely correct - pit bulls and Rottweilers kill and maim more human beings by far than any other breed. But considering their customer base, it was probably inevitable that they would have to back water on this ad.
Q. What has four legs and one little arm?
A. A happy pit bull.
But we have to watch what we say or we'll be labeled racist or whatever, so we have to blame the breed of dog and not the breed of human.
http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/news/pit-bull-protects-toddler-lost-in-woods-020312
my neighbor had a pit bull and his little boy (7 yrs old) would go out and feed it every night. you guessed it one night the pit bull attacked the little boy and he took over 150 stitches in his face. the only thing I would pet a pit bull with is a 44.
why are bars of soap getting smaller but people are getting bigger?
Pitbulls are mean and should not be allowed as a pet. McDonalds did say it RIGHT!
Rottweilers aren't anywhere near the same statistics are Pitt Bulls. Try again... the Pitt Bull breed should be destroyed.
~Elyissa
More people are maimed and killed by people than Pit bulls.
More people are maimed or killed by automobiles then by Pit bulls.
More Pitbulls are mamed or killed by people then people maimed or killed by Pit bulls.
More people drop dead after eating fast food then are bitten by Pit bulls.
Ive known lots of nice friendly Pit bulls, people are questionable.
wait till the wolves start moving into urban areas.
All of these companies that are appologizing for truthfull ads and political incorectness are cowards! Pit Bulls are bred for 1 thing and 1 thing only, VIOLENT behavior!
Rottweilers can be trained and are very loyal dogs. Pit Bulls are bred for one reason...to attack and not stop until the target is dead or they are.
Please get rid of them and above all keep them away from Children.
Ross;
It's not the dog, it's the owner.
I don't think "cry babbies" should be allowed to own Pitbulls...kinda like "grannies and monster trucks"
Notice this was in Los Angeles. Home of Millions and Millions of Illgeal Mexicans and their useless pitbulls. Much like here in Houston.
If someone owns one and has kids need to haver their kids taken from them as they are irresponsible parents.
madcitizen, most Pit Bull owners are either Caucasian or Black.
i was just reading the other day a list of the top ten deadliest dogs. number one on the list was rottweilers, number two, pitbull, followed by german shephard..... any dog has the potential to bite.but the degree of damage can be tremendous considering the dog.anyone who allows there 7 yr. old to feed there pitbull is absolutely not thinking straight.as a pitbull owner i am always on guard. my dog is a happy loving dog.but i am aware of the damage these animals as well as any other dog of their size and strength can cause and act accordingly .the problem with alot of these dogs is their temperment from being in-bred , cross-bred and so on.the same with rotts and shephards.these animals can be awesome pets given the right owner....enough said ... i love my pitbull.........................i honestly have to say though the lack of knowledge and lower level of intellect publicly displayed in many responses here is almost painful.......
you are one un educated person, maybe you should get of the couch and read a book that doesn't have Fabio in it
You know something, Sandy?
Sure, because ONE dog represents an entire breed....right???? Not very smart, are you?
Movies etc. ; ]
Cheers
I had a boss years ago whose son was mauled - by a Cocker Spaniel - over 300 stitches to his face, neck and head.
Any dog can be dangerous if not properly trained.
not very smart are the illegals and the little high school gangbangers that walk around all of south texas and any where else near that border, with their pitbulls acting all tough. when they are too dumb to take car of it, and can't even afford to feed it without slinging a little something or getting welfare mom to pay for upkeep.when thesekids get locked up teens through 30's their moms on welfare will come up with money to send them in jail for commissary.
I've never had a pit bull before, but I've seen shows where pit bulls were, as the above said, were just lap dogs.
Those of you who agree with McDonald's ad, you oughta take your own advice and me put down.

The facts do not lie.
The ad should have read," McBites, Safer then boxing with Tyson."
@ The Evil Tessmacher -
Did you notice by any chance that part of that statistic was "wolf hybrids"?
Ericb2, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
LOL...good one
Hey, I got one: "McBites - safer than petting a rooster at a cockfight"
TheEvil,
I noticed you used a website that doesn't even show how it reached its conclusions.

McD's sucks even without the ad.
spot on there too...thanks wolfman
@ Amanda-2017567: Where is your shelter and what is the name of it? As a bully breed lover I would love more info!
In the course of my life I've had in my family a cocker spaniel, rottweiler, rott-mix, pit-mix, and an American Bulldog. Guess which one but my brother (twice) to the point that he required stitches and has a scar to this day?
If you guessed the cocker spaniel you're right.
"As soon as I get done with this tattoo; me and Zeke here are gonna hop the trailer park fence and go down to McDonald's and tear somebody a new butt!"
Da ya want me an jefro bring da col beer
Probably the most thoughtful and even-handed comment in this thread.
@skrewdworld:
You sir are a true dog lover who understands the intricacies of owning and caring for these animals.
Props to you
Freaking funny SirLafaLot!!"donate to a pit bull fund" or "use a pit bull in an ad" what a lame request.
@ Sirlafalot
"Yep, and we ain't eatin' no dam chicken, neither."
From all the dopers, who own pitt bulls, and live around my neighborhood..
The owners come from poor breeding also...?
Hell, I'm not convinved that eating McDonald's anything is safer than petting a rabid female pitt bull.......with puppies.....!!!!!!!!!!
It was an idiotic ad to begin with - whether you like pit bulls or not. Clearly the "creative team" for this ad is not so "creative".
You people do realize Hispanic people are Caucasian, right???
I love George Carlin's idea to put a "Rabid Pit Bull with Aids on Board" in your car window. Should be safe then.
You do realize NOT ALL Hispanic people are caucasion. RIIIIIIGGGHT???
EricB,
You know HUNDREDS of pitbull owners?
I think you are lying.

No advertisement will get me back to MacDonalds.
Then you'd have to deal with the law I guess.
clewis, htdjpf's empirical evidence might not support your belief that pit bulls are just fine, but that doesn't make it untrue.
We have lost our sense of humor..... get real... spend your efforts on something important......
bunk!

Well I just watched it and it was FUNNY..... All I have to say to the complainers is Get A Life Already.....
It's not the dog, it's the owner.
Leave the pit bulls alone...destroy all the humans.
That commercial was funny....come on already! They said a STRAY not a pet... get real already...
I've seen people call lab mixes and hounds 'pit bull', my neighbor's American Bully is frequently called a pit bull, and the Mastiff mix down the street, you guessed it, 'It's a pit bull!'
A pit bull is an average sized dog, weighing 30 to 70 lbs. In the right hands, it is one of the most stable, loyal, affectionate, and playful breeds out there. Bites can happen with any dog, but, as I've read someone's comment about dismemberment of a human being, pits aren't physically capable of dismembering someone. I have dogs around all the time, mostly pit mixes, but the only time I got bitten was by a yellow lab.
their meat, made with ''PINK SLIME'', is much more of an issue----- for me, anyway.
Jaguars can be ferocious animals. Not sure how you housetrained that one.
On an aside note... three houses??? What type of doctorate degree do you have?
Camille...posting personal information like that is dangerous. Hope your pit bull is a guard dog.
how many horsepower is the jaguar? manual transmission i hope.
No, you dont. LOL at people making @!$%# up on the internet.
Feed the pit bull to your Jaguar. Snobbery at it's best.
A pitbull, excellent choice!3 houses. wow thats smart. and a jaguar, another good buy! awesome! but wait...Didn't i read somewhere a few months back were a pregnant hospital worker got home and her "pitbull" killed her?
does the a/c work in the jag or do you just crack the windows and act like your letting your tarded smoke out?
or is it really ferocious ?
In peace.
Ditto!!!
Thank you mellowfello!! You are so right. The golden rule does not only pertaine from human to human it also goes to human to pet.
You lost all credibility after your first attempt at a sentence.
Hey McDonald's, Maybe you should serve pitbull. I have a neighbor with 6. They will be available hopefully soon.
I hope your neighbor reads this.
Lucky you don't live next to me, you inbred f&$k!
Two dogs saved a toddler from drowning by pulling the boy out of a dam
near Mackay, in central Queensland, today.
An Andergrove property owner heard a noise and found the two-year-old and the dogs on the embankment of her dam about
11am (AEST), police said.
The boy was covered in mud, had marks on his upper arms, and there were drag marks from his body in the mud, consistent with
the dogs pulling him from the water.
Police said the boy had wandered from his home and his dogs, a rottweiler-cross and a Staffordshire terrier, had followed.
The child was taken to Mackay Base Hospital for a precautionary examination.
dave, you are a real nut job !
He doesn't know how. don't worry. I have already told him.
Sandra, bite me.
Cool fake story. Congrats.
@Cassie - you had a 'killer' dog since it was a pup and had it for 8 yrs and had to keep it away from everyone???? Either you weren't a responsible owner and socialized and trained it like any dog should be or you don't have a clue and don't deserve to own ANY kind of dog.
Cassie, you can lie to everyone but yourself.
we humans distinguish ourselves from animals by reasoning and we have more grey matter animals are animals regardless of the training they act by instinct; it is not its intention to harm and we humans harm it is their intention that is why human are more dangerous than animals I would rather chain a animal than a human jaja
Wow, so the dog never did anything but you were scared for nothing...only got scared when you found out it was a pitt. Its sad that the dog can love yu and not judge you from what it heard and you couldnt. You sound real stupid and ignorant
Elyria, OH - Best friend, family, constant companion - call him what you may - right now, his guardian is calling him "Protector".
A 21 yr-old pregnant woman was saved from an attacker by her ever-loyal companion on Tuesday night.
The dog, a Pit bull mix named Cash, sprang into action that evening when a man approached his guardian - grabbing her and trying to spin her around.
Arlee Ice told Fox8 news that her dog had never bitten anyone before - but he instinctively knew that this man was dangerous.
According to Ice, Cash immediately started biting the attacker, who fell to the ground and then ran away.
Ice and her dog escaped injury.
Without the company of her protective companion, things may have ended up much differently for this young woman.
Good boy Cash!
Good boy Cobain!
LOL, what a dumb story....
cassie, you must have tortured that dog or something, would you have preferred the dog be obedient and when a stranger breaks in your house and kills you because you didn't think that the dog should attack ANYONE !? real smart !
That was some incoherent story (confused).
(sighs)...... Another shot at mcdonald's from MSNBC 4th time this week ??? really??? this is news ???
btw they are right pitbulls are extremely dangerous and psychotic dogs.
The sentiment behind the McDonald's ad doesn't come from nothing.
christian thelslamic, people are vicous and killers and psychos !
sandra, time to take your meds.
Im lovin it.
ha..right!
I'll take my chances at MDs.
Mellowfello - your comment doesn't make a bit of sense. Go back to bed.
Mellowfello's comment reads OK, and I understand it. Maybe the person giving orders should do the task.
I am very glad they pulled the ad and where apologetic. Pit Bulls can be great dogs if they are with good people. I have worked with many dogs and Pit Bulls give me the least amount of trouble. More people have died of heart problems then from attacks.
Well said!
My brother's pit bull is one of the sweetest dogs. Very playful and excellent around my niece.
wiz-kid, " Pit Bulls can be great dogs if they are with good people."
Problem is you can't shoot the owner.
Maybe that should be a new slogan: "Take home a Pit Bull today! More people have died from heart problems then pit bull attacks!".
sandy, all dogs have teeth , they are all capable of biting, humans have teeth and are capable of and have bitten humans, they say that a human bite is worse than a dog's bite !
I have been bitten so many times by... CHIHUAHUAS! I've never ever had a problem with a Pittie!
I don't think I've done anything to you pittbull lovers. I'm just voicing my opinion as are you.
This is simply not true. Some animals are generically aggressive and dangerous. I'm not saying that all pitt bulls are like this but clearly they can be. The problem with pitt bulls or any large breed that is statistically more aggressive is if they do attack you, they cause much more damage.
Sickening? Not hardly. The holocaust is sickening. Bias against a dog breed is just an opinion and may even be justified. If someone approaches me and my boy walking a lab I take little notice. If it's a pitt bull, I'm picking him up. Don't like it, tough.
You mean like lions, tigers, bears, cougars, wolfs? You don't here people wanting to end their existence or ban them. Hell, they put many such animals on the endangered species list and work to keep them around.
Yeah, they used to say that about skin color too, but we are beginning to end such stereo types.
And seriously, that is one of the behaviors that the CDC recommends against FOR ALL DOGS. Are you trying to get attacked by showing fear and making fast moments?
Wolfs? A dog is a wolf in case you didn't know. But I was referring to individuals within a species not specifically entire species (which can also be true).
Who cares, the chances are extremely slim. Except in some strange cases, people who own labs don't do so to keep a mean tough dog. That's especially true where I live. I had a black lab for 17 years and I have known many people with labs. They tend to be pretty friendly.
LOL! 27.7% out of how many dog breeds? There are like 170+ and that's just the AKC breeds. 27.7% is freaking huge! I won't even argue the point with you. Also I bet many of the rest are rots and so forth. Thank you for making my point!
Now you are being silly. Dogs don't have the same rights as humans. Next you will argue for not having bias against car makes.
LOL! You want to source that? Because it doesn't come from anywhere I could find. Certainly not the AKC. I think Labs are #1 in the US by far. Pretty much every source I could find on the web puts labs at 1.
I didn't say anything like that so stop with the BS. You simply like to change the subject when you are losing.
Yes I can answer that. YOU'RE LYING!
http://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/images/dogbreeds-a.pdf
PBs are #1. Rots' are #2. Let's look at what has happened just this year
http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2012.php
Two deaths: Two Pitt bulls. The web site also has a lot of other interesting data. Pitts and Rots are a menace.
BTW here an article on the "nanny dog" LOL!
http://thetruthaboutpitbulls.blogspot.com/2010/08/nanny-dog-myth-revealed.html
Maybe cross the pitbull with the chicken? Pitbulls need to be bred out of existence no need for them...
And some would say, no need for you. Should we do away with you as well??
hd.allen, humans need to be bred out of existence because they are evil and alot of them are rapist, murderers, child killers, child molesters, should i keep going ?
no what we really have no need for is ignorant people such as yourself. pit bulls are such great dogs. ive never owned one but my next dog will be a pit from the villalobos rescue. i go up to our local petco every weekend. i help out with the cat adoptions. but we also have "lovaebull paws rescue" www.loveabullpawsrescue.org right there with us. i always go over to pet the pits. theyre just so wonderfull. i can tell you about one that was running down the freeway 2 weeks away from giving birth to 8 puppies. i met her last week. not only was she the sweetest thing ever but she was the most obediant dog ive seen. she even had her nails painted :) she is a great momma who never had a problem with you handling the pups.
@ hd.allen
So by all of your pit-bull hate impromptu reasoning for getting rid of this breed, you would also basically say that we need to imprison and euthanize every Black and Mexican person in America, since statistically their violent crime numbers are much higher and that is all that we see on TV right in regards to their ethnicity right?
They SHOULD donate to the fight against BSL
But everyone don't forget this is also the company that banned a pit bull therapy dog from being inside of their store!!
So every time someone offends someone with their opinions and views, they should pay some charity?
You just offended me with your comment. Go make a donation to the "Give a Goat to a Village" fund.
Maybe we should all be Mimes. Wouldn't this be a fun world to live in. Seems like everything is offensive to someone or are you all just cry babies. No wonder the rest of the world can't wait for us to fail. Sure way to ruin a country, rule yourself to death.
I hear ya. I was just wondering what happened to good ol' freedom of speech.
FYI.....Labrador Retrievers have just as many human bite reports, some years even more.
And American Pit Bull Terriers were bred and created to be human companions and protectors of children.
We have inbred white trash and ghetto black trash to thank for the modern-day reputation of the *evil* pit bull.
And NO, I do not own a pit bull....but I am educated.....unlike yourself.
Thank you Blue Devil for educating yourself before you comment.!!!!
rheoman, how did you come up with this conclusion , because of one dog ? why don't you put the blame where it belongs, with the owners. some neighbors had a labrador that was so vicous that anytime a human or other animal would walk by he would become vicous, i was so afraid to walk by there because of him.
Did you know....
6) It can be estimated that for every Pit Bull who kills, there are 10.5 MILLION that DON'T!
sited from http://www.dontbullymybreed.org/
THANK YOU! its just sad that people are so ignorant. youre more likely to die in a car accident then by that of a pit bull but people drive cars every day! ive never been afraid of pit bulls. i can say however, i am afraid of human society. the world would be so much better without people.
They can also learn a thing or two from animals. im 16 years old and im being smarter about this than most adults. grow up people.
flounder,
Don't compare "apples",(i.e Pit Bull killing Machines), to "oranges", (other causes of death).
Eating ANYTHING from Mcpinkslime (aka mcdonalds) is about as safe as a picnic at Chernobyl...
Cool, finally, the haters of whatever are after McD's now, giving WalMart a break, lol.
Where I live, Walmart has a McDonald's in it. Two businesses to bash, no waiting. Except on Saturdays.
Pit Bulls: Tweakers security system.
I'm laughing uncontrollably from this comment, because it's so true.
takes one to know one!!!!
hey you the one laughing uncontrollably at the comment, guess what?? Iam laughing uncontrollably at your picture!!!!
hey you, the one laughing at the guy's picture, at least he has a picture...where's yours? OHHH, you don't want to be identified.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah...,
no one can put their opinion out there on anything without offending someone -- no freedom of speech anymore it is too bad.
Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can speak freely and no one will take offense. ____>Freedom of speech means you are free to talk about whatever you like - with the knowledge that all will hear AND some or all may react. Freedom of speech is alive and well.
Jen, your comment makes no sense as everyone on here has been allowed to voice their opinion. Are you stoned???
Jen, freedom of speech covers a lot of territory, some free speech is just disparaging smart-mouthing and some is genuine stating of opinions on matters of interest to a lot of people. Sometimes, frequently I think, they do overlap. Freedom of speech fades when those who crack wise and smart-mouth have to back it up face to face and to a lot of online folks, good thing the 'Net is anonymous, not having to be held responsible.
McDonalds, please put the ad back out there. People need to get over themselves.
Agreed!
i agree too

Really??...why should any business care what this woman says? She represents 1/1000th of 1% of their customer base. Besides pitbulls ARE dangerous. I know. My friends 7 yr old child has a scar on hisface to prove it. Totally UNPROVOCTED, this dog pulled away from its upper middle class owner and bit him ..... I say euthanize all the pitbulls..
I almost lost a friend in an unprovoked Collie attack. This lady is getting massive support.
I was bitten by a dangerous chihuahua recently. They should all be euthanized.
Just kidding about the euthanized part.
I got bite mark scars thanks to a godless poodle. The worst suffering I have ever endured from a pit bull was near drowning in slobber.
The difference is Fifi at 7 libs isn't really going to rip your face off even if she is mean. Fifi can be drop kicked over a fence.

Worst dog bite I ever got was from a 3 lb poodle that my parents owned....and I -deserved- it for teasing him.
It shouldn't matter the breed or size or anything, only the individuals behavior...dog or human.
And if that 3lb poodle was instead a pit bull you might be dead or maimed for life. Small dogs cause limited damage.
They only report pit bull attacks. They won't report cocker spaniel attacks.....saw one before.
You saw ONE. <

actually a King Charles spaniel named Duke, my dog defended me when bullies had me surrounded as a child.
You failed to mention all the Pit Bull attacks on people, especially children that have been mauled and killed.
I agree it is how you train the animal. What is sad people here pitbull and all they think is to kill the dog. Another American stereotype.

What planet are you from? You are so blind to the facts there's not hope for you.
Any facts to back up that Goldens more likely to attack than Pit Bulls?
Here's some
Pit bull terriers accounted for Half of all dog attacks for all common breeds in the USA...more than twice the next highest breed Rottweiler.
as for Goldens.....6
to the pit bull's 1110
there must be an awful lot of BAD trainers out there.
There no bull. McDonald's get there head in line.
pit bull owners need to get their in line
gearhead obvioulsy is just as un educated about pit bulls as McDonalds is.
This is one of the most unneccessary complaints I have ever heard in my life. Pitbulls are in a category of vicious dogs, so any one who doesn't own them would think that & I'm jsut about 100% sure that eating anything from McDonald's is less risky than approaching & petting a Pit Bull.
thats so funny like a boycot of pitbull owners would bankrupt mcdonalds. hahaha
like pit bull owners probably eat anywhere else?
