Ok it is time restaurants need to change their comment section on their receipt to be internal not printed out. Common sense woul tell you hat is not the way to do business. Probably this person heard about the Chic filet episode and a lot of them try to one up others. So in effect you are letting a possible disgrutled employee display their beef on a customers receipt. There IS a Papa. His name is John Schnatter. He grew up in Jeffersonville, IN (Just across the river from his current home in Louisville, KY.) I worked at Papa John's in '02 and whenever a cashier took an order on the phone OR in person, they asked the customer's name. Problem avoided. What's so hard about that? Duh.

I honestly dont think the "company" owed an apology. Firing the employee was enough. Probably was some 16 year old kid anyway, people need to grow a pair.

The "big deal" is that he did not do this on the street or in a playground or in a school or movie theater. That would have been rudely racist enough. He did it during the course of his employment as the representative of a company that put him to work, pays him for his efforts and expects loyalty and concern for corporate image...at the minimum. That company has hundreds of millions of dollars invested in a positive public image and positive brand recognition and some young A-hole with a bad attitude or an even worse sense of humor sets the company back a whole bunch in the Asian community. Any one who can defend what this jerk did in the context in which he did it apparently has no respect for corporate investment, image, job creation and, ultimately, how racially-based rudeness impacts negatively on those things in the form of lost business. If I were the manager of that store or the president of the company, this woman would be receiving free orders for a year as an apology, and this kid had better not use the company as a reference for future employment - at least not without a super-convincing apology to the woman and to the company. Plus, if this woman were my wife, my sister, my mother, my daughter or my girlfriend, this would not end here.

The good thing about slurs like this one is that you only remember them for about an hour or so...

Wow everybody is always looking for a way to start a lawsuit. THe lady got an apology and the employee was dismissed. She does'nt deserve monetarty damages. Did it occurr to anyone that the employee probably did'nt ask the customers name to put on the reciept like should of been done and ended up putting that description on the receipt so she/he would remember which customer the order went to. Back in the day, the manager would have told the customer he was sorry if it offended her, and here is a coupon for a free meal... then patted the kid on the shoulder as he told him (in a voice loud enough for the customer to hear) he shouldn't do that again, winking at him with a hidden eye. Instead of putting down names why not go back to the number system like they use to have. Then the customer has show thier reciept to get thier product or food.

Call me jaded or cynical or just down-right distrusting of anything I see in the news anymore but a little red flag went up for me on this, like all the other too-stupid to do things I see in the news. If this honestly happened, then the firing of the employee and apology with a free pizza should suffice. However, if a lawsuit is filed, please check to see if the order taker and the customer know each other and/or can be traced to each other someway. My first thought reading this article was wouldn't it be just ironic if that is the name the person gave knowing that some minion would type it on the ticket so she could post it around and try to get some free stuff? Unless the security tapes record sound too (I'm sure some of them do but I've never seen one that did) there would be no way for the employee to verify they did and the customer would just say "why would I give a name like that?".

I used to work for Papa Johns when I was in college. Sometimes when you ask for a name, they just ignore you. Or they don't speak English very well, so you don't know what they said. Or they're plain out rude to you. At least once a day we'd put "Guy" or "Short hair" since the person wouldn't give up their name.

That being said, this employee either did it out of anger or stupidity, since there's a box you can put such comments without the customer seeing it on a receipt.

I don't think its too unreasonable that he lost his job over this. It sends a firmer message to someone that they can't get away with unprofessional attitudes, even at a minimum wage job. But I would have been okay with him keeping the job too.

So if an employee put "ugly fat kid" or "buck tooth" on a receipt he/she gave to your child, you'd be ok with it?

How about giving your elderly parent a receipt that says "half dead looking geezer"?

The first post on this thread states "totally unacceptable"! The company agreed. So how did the media get hold of this tantalizing, squabble driving, racially charged headline? Just lucky, I guess.

Although the comment was unacceptable, it would seem that there is some lack of employee training involved here. Perhaps the kid (was it a "kid"?) had heard the manager make racial slurs and assumed this would be considered funny. I would have given the employee a stern warning and then run the entire crew at that particular Papa's through a "what not to say" and "unacceptable behavior" training session.

These acts are premeditatedly raacist in nature imo. If this employee could not remember or spell the customer's name then he could have asked her to repeat her name or to spell her name period.

It is not the first time this sort of behaviour has occurred. Last year an employee or two at another store - it may have been Walmart- made racist comments over the sound system for all to hear.

But what are we to expect when this sort of nastiness is demonstrated even more so these days by supposedly educated people like ministers/polititians in public places, whether in stump speeches on the campaign trail, to in polititical debates, or in the pulpit, in print and other media like in e-mails and Twitter?

Then when called on it these folks' excuse is always the same thing...that it was a joke or their utterance was taken out of context or mis-interpreted. If it was supposed to be funny and not the person or persons being racially motivated and offensive...why is it that no one with a modicum of self respect, proper manners or sensitivity is laughing?

It is even done on these message boards. If it is not some ignorant twat dissing the President of the USA and Mrs Obama and their children with the name calling, birtherism etc, it is presidential candidates making negative blanket statements about a whole group of people -usually about minorities or the poor or folks of a lower socio-economic status. See Gingrigh, Bachmann, Paul, Cain etc.

To those who have tried to blame the victim or to try to pretend/say that what occurred was funny or suggest that the employee was young or whatev thus the behaviour should be excused because the person did not know better is only encouraging this demonstration of blatant insensitivity and intolerance imo.

As long as we keep excusing this sort of behaviour because of the person's youth then we are as guilt of these sort of insensitive/racist acts as the 'youth' who committed the offense.

Broken bones heal, while a broken spirit or a broken self-esteem does not heal as easily and in some cases may never heal. Hurt feelings come back to haunt people no matter what folks may try to state or believe.

We communicate with each other with words and although the next person using a specific word -probably in all innocence - can trigger a negative reaction in the person or persons who were subjected to this insensitivity and ignorance or who were poorly treated under even different circumstance at an earlier time and place.

Oh one other thing.... racism comes about when we use a negative feeling/views or prejudice, dislike and intolerance that we may have against one or two persons of another racial group and then use those feelings, views and intolerance to bash, beatup on, slam, slander, accuse, diminish, disrespect, negatively paint/describe and deny the worth/human-ness of allllll persons/ people of that racial group.

By the way not everyone is into confrontation as you and some of your ilk are, especially in this day and age of concealed carry and trigger tempers.

Perhaps these minorities know that if they should address the matter then, there is the distinct liklihood of the matter escalating and as things often goes, the minority is the one who is often times not going to be believed and could /will be either locked up (while they try to prove their citizenship/legal status) for disturbing the peace etc.... or may/could even be killed.

So it is better to quietly and freely walk away and live to fight another day...loudly... via social media imo. LOL

I understand what you are saying but at this time the employee was on Papa John's time and was being paid to do their job. Remember that speech you are always given when you are first hired;"You are now a representative of this company. what you say or do will be reflection upon the company." This is why Papa John had to fire the employee because they were representing Papa John's, at the time, and not themselves, since they were working. Think of it how would you like it if you walked into a predominately minority restaurant and you received a receipt that said whitey, cracker, or even something more insultive and from reading the article she didn't complain to Papa John's, she was tweeting to friends what happen and they told friends, so on and so forth, eventually Papa John's found out. From what I understand they are still trying to get ahold of her.

I respecfully disagree with you on a few points. The first point is that he was amusing himself in a non-harmful way. It was harmful to his employer. If the customer was insulted enough to post her receipt online its more than likely that she will hold some level of resentment to the store/franchise thus harming their business. Secondly I don't believe that the right of free speech extends to an employee saying whatever it is that he pleases as a representative of his employer. His "free speech" was uttered towrds a customer of his employer on a receipt of his employter. As a job creator......, err small business owner myself I would have real issues if my employee's insulted my customers. I know how hard I work to developa and maintain a customer base. I certinly don't need an employe using bad judgment and offending my customers.

Lastly while I am writing this I don't recall any mention of the employee being white, black, latino or other.

If you would actually read the NDAA, you would see that none of the provisions I think you are talking about apply to American citizens, legal aliens or anyone actually arrested in the United States. If you have actually read the NDAA , then it must be the Bill of Rights or the Constitution that you have not read.

I think you may be getting your Amendments a bit scrambled – and 1 + 4 does not equal 5. Which is to say, search and seizure is covered under the fourth amendment and not the first which covers the free speech question at issue here.

And to that issue I would have to remind you, freedom of speech is not all-inclusive. I'm sure you have heard about the Supreme Court decision on the subject: Schenk vs United States (1919)

"The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic. ... The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent.“

Now, in 1919, the justices in no way could have imagined the extent of lack of integrity, and the generally disrespectful manner in which the public now treats others with such distain, nor the extent of indignation the presumed offended assumes. Neither would they have been able to envision the glee with which those same injured parties jump at the opportunity to litigate their injuries to dollar signs, no matter how slight or unintended.

Today, using many racial epithets pejoratively is considered not only racists but, in many circumstances, catalytic and inviting conflict. Thus, they could be considered as creating "… a clear and present danger that will bring about substantive evil…" That is why using racial slurs in a mean and untenable manner is considered wrong and not protected under the First Amendment.

The inability of our lawmakers to crystal ball the future is the very reason we have so many Amendments to the constitution. Likewise, we are continually 'tweaking' those Amendments to fine tune the stone tablets by which our nation is governed. The fine line in this particular case, and the reason there is a major question as to whether or not there is a valid basis for a lawsuit (which the injured party has not suggested but which has been put forth by a number of posters here), is the user's intent. Was the word intended as a slur? Was it meant to be derogatory? Was it presented in a mean spirited way? Any potential lawsuit must be able to answer yes to these questions in order to prove intent to injure on the part of the perpetrator.

On the other hand, the dismissal of the worker for the abysmally poor choice of words might have been handled a bit less aggressively. If, for instance, this worker had never been warned of any wrong-doing in the past, firing might have been extreme. Perhaps a warning might have been more appropriate. However, in the interests of global PR, Papa John's acted in the extreme to prevent any further fallout. And, as someone previously noted, this was certainly within their rights in the interests of protecting their business. All in all, it is a rather unfortunate situation and, as too often happens in our internet giddy world, has grown far beyond its true magnitude.

In other words … Really? I don't know how I would react if someone referred to me as a "red-headed mick" but I doubt I would find any outrage in it. In high school, my best friend and I thrived on instigating shock in everyone around us. She'd shout at me and call me honky and I'd yell right back calling her n----r. In this day and age we dont need to single out a race or religion and go out of our way to appease them like we do the muslims now in this country. I have not heard such silly stupidity in all my life. Some of you state that this was not a problem, but the truth it is, but we have come to the point where racial equality is really being abused. A man in college wants to have a night watching movies made by Caucasian directors with the same race as actors and everyone screams racism, yet we have film after film by African Americana's with directors and actors and it is all OK. White people have had this racial guilt slammed down their necks until they are afraid to say anything less it be looked at with someone labeling it as racist.

The truth is, my father is English with about 1/16 native American in him, and he is considered white. My wife is full Asian, and my son then is half Asian, so is he half Asian and half white, or is he just a American. Lets go further; we have a president who is half white, his dad was primarily Arab with 1/8 African Black in him, so for political expediency the president threw his mother and grandparents (who raised him) and ran as a African American, when he should have said he was a American with the blessing of being mixed with the blood of all that makes us all American. We are the melting pot.

My child plays, he did not ever see any of his friends as white, Asian or African American until he had the administrations policy of forcing this issue down on his little six year old mind.

When are we going to stop all this nonsense. The African Americans want me to pay money in reparations to them for slavery when the facts are the biggest slave owner in the 1800s was a African American (read Robert Grooms a African American Professor). I had someone tell me that I should have to pay up, and I told him it was fine as long as he paid me back (seeing that he claimed the Egyptians were African) then the amount he owed with interest for 5,000 years far outweighed what I owed him. In the end I told him we need to all go to a day care center and watch children play together and maybe we could take a lesson from them on how to get together. They do not care about such matters, they care about their friends no matter what color they are.

So instead of dividing this nation maybe we should unite as one common people, Americans, (it is so sad that Mrs Obama never felt like a American until her husband was nominated), and instead of listening to the racist rants of Farrakhan, Reverend White, the KKK, and all the other hate groups, maybe we could come together and learn from other cultures, try their foods and enjoy their hospitality, and in the end we would find out that as much as we are different we are all the same.

So lets enjoy our different diverse ancestries and cultures but realize at the same time although we are different, we are still the same in that we are Americans. And if you do not like it, then go somewhere where they will tolerate your hatred and bigotry. And for the people that are comming here and thinking they have a right as guest of this country to teach such nonsense, maybe we should tell them they are not welcome and send them on the next plane home. I beleive in free speach, but it should be used with responsibilty, not as a excuse for stupidity.

I worked there for years. Corporate guidelines do not call for cheddar on any non-specialty pizza. When will people STOP being so damned sensitive? It's getting ridiculous, all of the baby crying going on these days. It's like we are all having to walk on egg shells for fear of hurting someone's feelings. It's one thing to physically harm someone or their property while committing a hate crime. It's quite another thing when someone being ignorant opens their mouth (or types/writes) and utters a phrase or word others may find offensive. People need to grow up, grow a pair, and get over your small incidental selves.

If employers and all managers of people could control what their entry level line, minimum wage employees say/do, we would have less headaches. I think I like this comment the most. Well reasoned.

A good talking too, a two week suspension and a formal written apology from the employee would have sufficed. Probably would have sent a better lesson to the employee who now might actually start feeling racists due to being fired. Perhaps this person has a family to support. Eveybody posting on the story of the 15 year old black girl who ranaway, got caught stealing, got picked up by ICE then deported to colombia because she gave a false name wanted her to get a 2nd chance, the family wants a lawsuit. Every poster that thought the girl should be accountable for her actions was called a racist. This employee must be white cause if the employee was any other race it would have been stated and the sentiments here would also likely be different as well.

So... lets add more regulations and more classes and more interventions and more laws to prevent this...... OR parents can teach their kids.... people can take responsibility.....Papa fired the kid, apologized and we can all move on. I have found most of their employees to be pretty good. Never a problem since they moved into the Houston Area for me at least.

I think it is individual person not company. I worked for a big company in Seattle. Every year they made sure their employees took diversity class. There were 2 employees who made fun at Asian, black, not born in US thru company email for 2 years. I was one of many victims. We went to HR. Nothing was happen. Because one of them knew very high manager. Finally someone decided to go to one Asian manager. That manager acted immediately. They brough in out of town EEO personnel. It took her one week to interview all victims plus 2 racials employees. Within 2 weeks, both of them dismissed. However, a leader (a one who made all of racial comments and said she has connection with high management. She is a member of Rainier club) came back to work after one year. She acted like "see I am untouchable". Few victims decided to leave a company because they think if she was able to come back to work after one year and acted like an untouchable. They worried about their jobs. I was one of those people who left the company. This is a big company in Seattle..

With the economic downturn, customers have gotten more demanding... more rude and expect so much more for so much less while increasing wages.....More than once, I have had a customer in front of me answer their cell, tell the clerk to "hold on" and yap about who did what to who last week.....

Fast food restaurants need to raise their standards back to a level that requires at least a high school diploma or GED. Though I've never experienced such overt treatment, I've had too many of my orders given to me incorrectly or I've actually had to show the employee how to count the change due to me. Gone are the days when having to look forward to working at a place no better than McDonald's was enough of a threat to get your kids to do well in school. The kids who barely finish high school have more intelligence than the person taking your order at most fast food chains.

Your response is at the heart of two things occurring in this country. 1) Decline in work ethic and 2) Lack of empathy.

First, you surmise that a person working in the customer service field should discontinue being a professional if a customer gives them a difficult time? I doubt that would be your response if you were a business owner hiring employees to interact with the public. If you agree with this employee's idiotic behavior then you should never complain if you are treated badly by an employee who is having a bad day, or didn't like the way you spoke to them that day.

Last, even if this woman was an ass to that employee then why is the response immediately a racial slur? Worst yet, why would you defend anyone who would even go there. Fact is, this employee thought that they were going to get away with being an ass and got caught, and got fired. Tough economic times have nothing to do with losing our civility towards one another.

Customers have always been demanding and a bad economy has nothing to do with it. People need to go to work and suck it up like the rest of us. If you cannot work with the public then stay home. If you condone that behavior then the next time you are serviced immediately alert the employee assisting you that they are allowed to be rude and racist towards you to disperse any confusion.

There are many people out there that graduate or go back and get there GED yet still have no common sense. Graduating has nothing to do with this. In another scenerio, the employee could have been swamped. The ordering room nut to butt and he was using words that would help to identify a customer based on a brief visual discription so he and or others would be able to unite the customer with her pizza. This customer just actually looked and the reciept and took notice and then alerted the media.

OR PARENTS could teach their kids the same.... why waste money on teaching MANNERS... TOLERANCE (that always was part of the Church experience) and following the rules of our society? I'd home school my kid if they added Diversity 101, when they don't even have enough room for all the necessary math and science courses. If I want my kids to hate Mexicans, they'll hate Mexicans. There's nothing you or the government can do about it. I can pull off propaganda in the home just as well as the government can over public channels.

You are on to something, but I agree with some others that it goes way beyond teaching things in school. Now, of course as parents we know that no matter what we teach at times children will be rude, do stupid things. Of course its not clear if this employee was a child. But assuming that. Also, instead of racial sensitivity classes, lets just have classes on civility. Lets call it Civility 101 for all levels of education and beyond. I think we must first learn how to be respectful towards one another before we can even broach being empathetic towards someone because their race is different from ours.

We used to have children start school in 1st grade (6yrs old), then kindergarten (5yrs old) was added, then it was PreK (age 4), now we have headstart/surestart (age 3). Pretty soon we'll be giving birth and handing our kids over immediately for indoctrination on merly memorizing what they are told and not doing any critical thinking for themselves as is becoming popular in school. Seriously people stop just breeding and start raising your kids! Its pure laziness. Kids are not always easy if you are not willing to do the work, then don't have them. As a culture we have become oblivious to each other, we need to get back to the way it use to be. If a neighbor saw your kid doing something wrong they told the kid to stop and the kid stopped because they knew their parents were going to find out and they were going to get in trouble. Now everyone is afraid to say anything because the parents will be defensive and say, "not my kid, my kid would never do that!" sorry but your kids aren't perfect, they are still learning. Which is why they are suppose to have adults to teach and guide them and get on to them when they are doing wrong things. There is a saying, "it takes a village to raise a child", we have forgotten that. My son's teachers actually have told me how refreshing it is that when they tell me my son or sons has done something I actually take the teacher side and set up disciplinary action depending on what they have done and how bad it was. They know that I know the teacher and check with her at least once a week (usually when I picked them up I make sure to ask her how things are going and she either says they are doing good or this happened and I tell her thank you for telling me) to see how they are behaving and doing and they know there are consequences as well as rewards in life. The teacher usually only has to say, I will be speaking to your mom today if they do start to give her problems and yes I am a very very busy parent with other things going on but I make the time because my kids are my most precious gifts in life and I am responsible for how they turn out as ADULTS! as productive members of society! Parents though usually take their kids side and blame the teachers so the kids know they can get away with crap. That goes true in public too, if you see a kid doing something wrong tell them to stop, don't just put your blinders on and keep walking, no wonder kids think they can do whatever they want. Tell their parents what they are doing, people need to be held accountable by their fellow members in society not the government. Also, if someone tells you that your kid is doing something wrong be able to accept it, don't yell at the messenger rather instead, thank them for having eyes out on your kid when you couldn't, then take the time to talk to your kid and find out why they did what they did if they know its wrong and why, what they need to work on, if it is continuous then what the punishment will be if they don't stop. Kids need guidelines, structure, and consequences. This needs to be done or our society will continue to just get worse and worse.

Seems that nowadays, schools not only need to teach the basics of the alphabet and numbers to children, but also need to teach character-building skills such as "do not lie, cheat, steal, or litter" and respect your elders -- morals that used to be taught at home by parents. I was appalled to realize when my own kids started school, how many of their little classmates had never heard of these basic rules of life.

It's the parents place to "SHOW" their kids how to act in public. Regardless of whether it's at school or at work, it's still a public setting and how you were raised by your parents shows. The school teachers place in a childs life is to teach, a parents is to lead by example, and correct wrong doing. I was raised on a farm and my father had quite a few blacks work for him. IF he EVER heard one of the 4 of us kids be disrespectful to one of them he would have beat us until we could not set down. My name was Freckles. Others I recall were PooBear, Ichabod, Turkey (because that's what he usually ate), and Chatterbox (a quiet guy). We weren't offended, just amused. Another thing, did she or did she not have "chinky" eyes? I don't think the kid did anything wrong. He didn't have the name so he used a description. Chink means a narrow opening. He could of said a woman with narrow eyes but would that have been OK? Some people are so sensitive jeesh! What if he said short haired woman with mustache? LOl, he didn't commit a crime nor was it really racial. I personally think people pull the race card all too much. The truth is we are all one race, The Human Race! The word race is obsolete today. The past is the past people if you keep looking back, you are never going to move forward. Negative things and people are all around us and so don't fall into its evil trap called misery. This is absolutely ridiculous. It's a good thing that punk kid got dismissed. Everyone is saying we need to lighten up. That may be true if this took place at a comedy club, where it is possible that such a thing could be said. However, this woman simply wanted to buy a pizza, and did not expect such treatment. The word "Chink," is a racial slur directed toward those of Asian ancestry. If he didn't have a name, he could've just written on the receipt, "Asian Lady." Why does he have to right a racial slur. Some people might not find the word "Chink" to be offensive, but some definitely do. Does one HAVE to say racial slurs in today's society?

Will- This is America the land with all different type ethnicity. Is it right to do what he did? He really didn't do anything. Look up chink in the dictionary. It's not racial. The deal here is that we are all made to believe it is. People point people out by there looks. Well, the way I see it, he can think or say anything he wants when he is on his own time, but when he is working for and representing someone elses business, he needs to mind his manners. When his name is on the bottom of the payroll checks for his own business, he can do as he pleases. I imagine he would then have a differant attitude on how to conduct business with the public.

If you follow the link, you will find that the word "chink," is listed as a slang word, as well as offensive and disparaging.

You are correct on many of your points, but on this you are wrong. The word, "chink" is racial and offensive when used in the context that the employee intended to. You can even type the word chink into wikipedia and get a historical overview on this slur.

Will- I looked the word up before posting and I am well familiar with the word and how some people use it. I'm not saying it can't be offensive, I am saying that the kid didn't break any laws. I'm also saying that the kid is ignorant for using that term.

Danny- You're right. He didn't break any laws. However, in both you're posts you said that he didn't do anything wrong, nor was it racial. I completely disagree with you on this point. Of course it is racist to use that word. People use the word "n*ger" for blacks, "wet*acks" for latinos, and "ch*nks" for Asians. So in your opinion. Do you think the kid did anything wrong? Was it racially motivated?

However, his employer, in this case Papa Johns, still has the right to terminate his employment, or otherwise discipline him, for behaving in a manner they deem unsuitable for their employees.
