Germany was at 0.1% growth for the last quarter and the Eurozone as a whole was at 0.2%. This isn't the US, but it is the market for our goods. It's Globalization Baby! We're all interrelated now. I think this, along with inflation, will weigh on jobs creation and we may even see more lay-offs in the near future. The Administration seems to have a jobs plan - hopefully its just that and without the political add-ons. Not looking good overall for the home team. Just my .02$.
MSNBC is dilusional. Jobless claims have risen yet again above 400k and Obama is on vacation. We need serious leadership in the WH and Obama is not it!
The President can't create jobs, that is what Congress does, they are the Legislative branch. That legislation has to come from them, staring with the House...so why aren't they doing anything about it?
"The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose back above 400,000 last week. Still, the average number of applications over the past four weeks fell to its lowest level since mid-April — that suggests the job market may be improving."
Dearest Government and Media- Do you need lotion to be able to write things like that? Gov-"The jobs prospects look significantly worse, BUT if we make them show under 400,000 this week it will look better, then we'll just readjust them on Tuesday and do it again on Friday. That way people will think things are better." Media- "Yeah, and we'll keep saying, Boy that looks better this week and a clear sign of better days because you broke 400,000 again....." Dopes.

Every month the same BS. "Employment is getting better". One week later "oops it really sucks".
Why does everyone blame the President? Congress is where all the decisions are made. Blame your state representatives for crappy negotiating that stalemates everything.
You can blame congress all you want but let me ask you this who was responsible for the surplus of funds the US had before 2000? As most all liberals would say it was because of President Clinton, right? Or was it because of a Republican Congress led by Newt Gingrich, as you would suggest? So in ten years who will have the blame for the economy and joblessness in this country right now? When you are the leader of a country you are responsible for everything no matter if you can control it or not. But in all honesty blaming anyone gets us no where both sides just need to figure it out and do it QUICKLY!!!

I agree that the under-employment number is more telling. The way the employment number is calculated makes it fairly useless since you can't even compare today's numbers with the numbers from a month ago (due to the formula for dropping people out of the "potential employee" pool).
Baby boomers opting out of the job market into social security retirement because they can't find jobs has to figure into this some way. I am believing that there are more unemployed people that are not being counted than anyone can imagine. Let alone the young people fresh out of high school and college that cannot find work. Indeed under-employed people that are hanging on by a thread play a part in all this. Have we hit the lowest point? I sure wish so.
Republicans are going to put some jobs legislation through when? They've been in over 200 days, and in this crisis they should have come back from vacation.
Obama has been in for over two and a half years, he should have never gone of vacation, and especially not to a place like Martha's Vineyard, where 99% of us cant afford to go. Talk about "Let them eat cake".
we are back to April levels, in April they were still releasing 400 billion in stimulus money ,things were so bad; now things are looking up since we are back to the April level; who the hell writes this junk, do they really believe the American people are that stupid!

Yes, Yes they do...and sadly they are probably right

Get diversified skill/s and focus on negative social Vices this will help you sell yourself for a job. remember they hire about 3.5-4.5 million people a month for the past 3 years. If you have an in demand skill it is easy to get a job any were.
Dave and Linda are both correct! Add in the number of young folks entering the job market who CAN'T collect benefits who CAN'T find a job and I bet the number increases quite a bit again. MSNBC- How can you even call yourself a news organization! Absolutely PITIFUL!!!!!!
There are also the ones not looking for work anymore... but counting them is hard. These numbers are not meant to be the actual numbers of people without a job, they are just indicators of where our economy is, and over the course of many months, can be a predictor of where it's going.
The question we need answered is when will congress pass a jobs producing bill? They have certainly passed a few job killers, time to head the other way, guys.
MSNBC is dilusional. Jobless claims have risen yet again above 400k and Obama is on vacation. We need serious leadership in the WH and Obama is not it!

Answers: A) george bush jr's speech writer.
B) no, just the rethugli-cants, and after reading many of the con's post on here and other sites, they're probably correct.
I'm Walter Conkite, and that's how it is on 18 Aug 2011. Good day.
Interesting (but ridiculous) analysis. For 18 of 19 weeks new filings have been over 400,000. For the one week they were below (last week) they were adjusted upward to 399,000. So if filings at 375,000 or less suggests "health" how do you interpret a moving average in excess of 400,000 for nearly five full months as improvement?
I mean if that isn't a Pollyanna perspective what is? Thanks again for not bothering with critical thinking, M$NBC.
The Labor Department said its Consumer Price Index rose 0.5 percent in July, following a drop of 0.2 percent in June. Gas prices accounted for much of the swing.
There was an article on here just a couple days ago stating gas prices had DROPPED $.09 in the last three weeks. Now they want us to believe gas prices accounted for much of the increase. WTF??????
MSNBC must be peddling their BS to the rethucli-cons knowing their attention span is so short they wouldn't remember the other story if it was on here yesterday.
Jon> Hate is a pretty strong word. Most of us are hugely disappointed by his lack of ability and experience. In order to "hate" Mr. Obama I'd have to acknowledge that this irrelevant man is even worthy of consideration.
You should be more disapointed with the idiots you elected to congress. Congress controls the purse and makes the policy. The president is just the CEO. Like any corporation, the CEO can't do squat unless the board of directors tells him to. It gets really old watching the ignorance of the right as they shrill about Obama. What makes it old is you act like you have a solution that hasn't been totally debunked years ago. Cut Cap and Kill wasn't a solution, a Balanced Budget Amendment would be great but not the one proposed by conservatives that would have totally tied the hands of the government in any emergency situation. The inability of the right to see beyond the end of their nose is quite disconcerting and the fact that they are so selfish that they are unwilling to see any benefit to a path containing ideas other than their own is truly sad.
Amused In The Midwest The president is just the CEO. Like any corporation, the CEO can't do squat unless the board of directors tells him to.
CEO's are responsible to the board of directors, but they have the responsibility for day to day operations. The Board does have the means to remove a CEO is necessary, if you want to equate responsibilities of a Board of Directors, it would be the American voter, not congress.
I don't hate Obama (or any politician), but I am very disappointed in his job performance.
As to jobs, I think it's the responsibility of government to create a tax and regulatory environment that encourages companies to hire people - but I do not think government should be directly creating jobs.
I would like to see the president and congress all propose their ideas on creating a job friendly environment - then we can choose the ideas we like best. Yes, I realize the president cannot officially put a bill up for vote, but he can outline a detailed plan and present it to congress and the people to review. I would like to see the leaders of the House and Senate do the same. Then, hopefully, we can have a reasoned, productive debate in this country...
Most of us are hugely disappointed by his lack of ability and experience.
Exolain lack of ability. We elected a cowboy actor and are disappointed with Obama's experience. What was Bush's experience riding daddy's coat tails? We elected charisma and popularity not ability and experience.
What are these idiots at MSNBC smoking? Heck, they don't make herb potent enough for this kind of Fantasia thinking. Is LSD back in fashion? Is Timothy Leary alive and well?
These people are spinning this so much that they have gotten completely dizzy!!! Do they think the American people have just fallen off the truck??
So now a rise in new applications is considered an improvement. And can we really believe that the revised numbers from last week were 399,000 and not 400,000 just to make it look good and they could keep the statement that it was the first time they had fallen below 400,000 since early April.
Come on people think about it. I'm sure BHO is going to while he relaxes on Martha's Vineyard for the next 10 days. Details of his plan appear to be a rehash of his previous failed policies and even Europe doesn't think this guy can turn it around.
Well, headlines of: "Job stagnation continues for 20th week" don't really fit well with either the left ideology or right ideology. The "true" headline is boring.
So, MSNBC will try and find the positive in "nothing happened", while Fox will try to find the negative in "nothing happened."
The economists tipping points are over 425k FTCs, things are getting worse.
And under 375K FTCs, things are getting better.
That range between 375 - 425 is where we've been for quite some time. But, exactly when was the last time any news service had a banner headline of "Nothing Significant Happened Today".
And, of course, the bulk of the audience WANTS to see one extreme or the other in the news, (whichever version of events maps to their preconceived notions).
Flat is flat. It's not getting better. Not getting worse.
The true headline should be ... "Nothing to see here ... move along."
The smart ones are at Fox News, though journalists in general are not all that intelligent. Look at the typical course of study for journalism majors. Journalism is probably the least demanding of all college majors. It is very obvious that MSNBC gets the bottom of the barrel.
Typical daily load of crap from some IDIOT writer who has been told never to tell whats really going on. You would think some of these people would feel guilty about slanting this horse $hit every day but they obviously do not. A 9.1 Percent unemployment rate, thats got to be the biggest load the government trys to sell yet. Really is incredible but we will always have the sheep that believe this crap.
Are you kidding me? You are so biased. New jobless claims have been near or over 400k for months. Now we have no jobs and inflation raising. Can you say Carter stagflation. Ben will say is transitory. You have to fell sorry for Ben. He has spent his entire life in the Princeton bubble studying the great depression writings books on how he would have fixed the problem. Now he has the opportunity and his plans don't work. He can't admit he is wrong now or he has to admit his entire life is a failure and no one would buy his books. The truth hurts! Maybe your savior Obama can give another speech.
Merman> There is no way the economy could be improving with that man in the White House. His color is of no concern. His complete lack of competency is the only issue. Don't even think of making this a racial issue....................unless of course you fixate on those sorts of things.
There is no way these numbers are accurate. In most States when you are unemployed and collecting unemployment benefits you are required to file every week. However, once your unemployment benefits run out, you are no longer required to file a claim. That being said how can any State provide an accurate account of those individuals who are unemployed? For example in WA State once you’re benefits run out and you go online to file your claim, the option to file a weekly claim is not available. Therefore, I think the percentage of people unemployed is greater than what is being reported.
For you Obama haters, keep in mind there are three branches Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. We the people elect representatives (House and Senate) to represent us and to push through legislation. They are the ones that should be pushing through legislation to create job incentives to those employers (small and large). Yes the President can call (suggest) for incentives but it’s the Congress that has to approve those suggestions and currently the Tea Party/Republicans have a choke hold on the House and nothing will get past them. For a little reminder on the Branches of Government and their responsibility, look up "Ben's Guide: Branches of Government on the web.
kdf... maybe you should talk to Harry Reid. He's the Senate Majority Leader if you didn't already know. He's indicated several times that anything that comes out of the Republican controlled House of Representatives is "dead on arrival". It seems to me that those "Tea Party/Republicans" that you claim have a "choke hold on the house" HAVE passed legislation. It appears that the blockage is not in the House of Representatives.
no president can pass legislation. they all need to come back to washington. they all need to stop fund raising. stop all of this nonsense, sit down, roll up their sleeves and get the job done. this bitter division will hurt all of us. if this was a business they would all be fired. every last one of them. we should all mail our representatives pink slips in the mail. maybe they will get the message. i would rather they get the message sooner than later. later we may dig the hole so deep we won't get out.
We prefer to visit the Obama News Network and spread truth and actual analysis. Fox already has that base covered. Thanks for playing. We have some lovely parting gifts for you.
Thurman, obviously you have a brain the size of a pea to think most of the intelligent Americans that post here haven't already made the rounds to several media outlets to decipher some truth out of the state controlled media. It's just MSNBC takes the cake for the spinning lies they create to keep this empty suit propped up.
hahahahahahaha MSNBC, the Obama spin machine!! not my fault, not my fault, not my fault!! Harry Truman would be so proud of this bumbling idiot!!! He doesn't even know what kind of income you pay social security on. Guess he expects all of us to forget that for the first two years in office he had a veto proof house and senate. I see he may finally decide to say something about Syria, where the hell is ms. clinton, working on her tan!! Haven't heard a peep from her while the world continues to explode in violence.
Oh namdoc... You should be hearing from tripledog soon ranting about what a pathetic sexist pig you are for belittleing a female? You never never never degrade a female in this forum. The only salvation you may have is that Ms Clinton is a Democrat and you will be exempt from the pig status!
Round and round we go, where we fall nobody knows especially our Campaigner - Vacationer- Bullshyter 'n Chief who could give a rat's azz. With state fed News agencies such as TASS ie-MSNBC its no wonder Obummer feels so good out at Martha's Vineyard
I guess he figures he needs to live it up while he can... See you in the unemployment line Mr. Pres.. what a tool!
yep sure am and livin' out of my car presently. Just checkin the news out as I do everyday trying to stay up with current events in between the job hunting.
ahh nooo... I wouldn't ask that bag of dicks for anything other than him to do his job which as I understand it is to work and not play. But I'd gladly trade positions with him. At least you would get someone, ME, that would work his ass off morning to night EVERYDAY with no vacations. How many vacations (over 10) and golf days (countless) does this idiot need??? Some work ethic and btw.. it was him and his Socialist party that killed my 20 year career to leave me at the ripe age of 48 on the streets. So yeah there's a tinge of bitterness in my tone for all of the right reasons! Impeach this bum already!
Neither parties are socialists - there's too much corporatism going on. While I can tell we would disagree on a lot of stuff, I am sorry you lost your job and hope things will turn around for you.
The fact is things are not getting better. Some try to put a positive spin on the situation but life in the private sector of this country is lousy and all the government does is come with new scams and schemes to take more money.
That's b/c they can't control the corporations, only guess what they will do. The only way to guarantee (to an extent) what a corp will do is make some kind of deal with them - one that costs us more money and freedom to control the market ourselves. I think the tanking of the stock market might actually work in people's favor - if they aren't making their money there, they will start to try and make more money again through expansion and hiring. To me, that sounds better than making "deals" with them and lowering their tax rates to nothing while small business struggles. In the waiting period, I see nothing wrong with creating some temporary jobs through infrastructure improvement. We're crazy if we just have the philosophy though to just give into their demands.
Bottom line, since O took office... "jobs saved or created"... zero... jobs LOST... 2 million.... Obozo is a loser whose policies can be summed up as "we need tax tax tax and spend a lot more money" and "blame anybody but me".... what a joke!
Go Obama - now this is the real deal. (not like Perry claiming Texas job growth was his doing when it was in fact the recent oil/gas boom there - Perry is a real horse's a$$!!))
Gov. Perry promotes an environment that favors growth and job creation and gets no credit.
Pres. Obama fosters and environment that restrains private sector jobs as he did in the gulf and his numerous attacks, and stated dislike for commerce....and gets no blame.
He stole jobs from neighboring states with his "favors". How does this work on a national scale? Who's he going to steal from? He pandered to the corporations and now has deficit problems b/c of it. The corporations are all playing musical chairs and the states that don't give in lose. He's just moving jobs around - NOT creating them.
he was the Gov of Texas not the U.S. Pres....his job was to look out for Texas...he did. Now you want to say because those jobs came from other states its a problem...wonder why Texas kept him so long. It may be a stretch..but try APPLES=APPLES. I am no fan (yet) of Perry...but he did what he was hired to do.
Obama never created one job- although he claims to have saved some..LOLZ and of course the cost per job was ridiculous.
I agree - he did look out for TX. My point is, that doesn't mean he can solve our job problem on a National level b/c what he did in TX cannot be done as president. Anytime government tries to create a job, they accrue deficit through spending or revenue loss. Only business can create jobs. Businesses are choosing not to - so there's not much choice government has rather than creating deficit or spending.
Here's a thought, Mr. President. Right after you return from vacation why don't you give Arthur Laffer a call and give him an hour of your time. With most people it would take only thirty minutes but since you had Cristina Romer previously and a few others you might gain from a different perspective.
Obama has been asking folks to call their members of Congress and get in their face to support whatever the President is going to propose.
Folks, have a better idea:
LET US DEMAND THAT THE PRESIDENT SHOW US HIS COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF HIS PROPOSALS, with numbers and benchmarks of success or failure. His initial stimulus was a bust; his green jobs programs were a bust; and his CHEVY VOLT sold a whopping 125 in July. Obama has proven that HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT JOB CREATION, NOR HOW TO GROW AN ECONOMY.
There are a growing number of Americans that are tired calling and writing members of Congress, when we know that it is not the Legislative Branch's responsibility of SUBMITTING BUDGETS! (HAVE NOT HAD A FEDERAL BUDGET IN OVER 850 DAYS MR. OBAMA -- WHY??)
In other words folks, why are we calling Congress when we will not know what we are talking about -- other than saying "OBAMA TOLD US TO CALL YOU AND WHINE!"????
Has Obama totally lost it??? Has he become delusional??
Obama's agenda and the past democratic congress set the country up for the situation we are in. He doesn't get it. His last speech in Minnesota he said the economy has improved since he took office. I guess to him 9.1% unemployment is better than 7.6%. He should take off his rose colored glasses.
Gotta love the liberal slant on ALL MSNBC stories involving unemployment. What ever happened to fair and impartial journalism? Job claims are up yet they print ridiculous garbage about how this is a good thing.
Debt based monetary system and interest based economy are the causes of bubbles and busts. An entire nation cannot borrow cheap credit, inflate the money supply with debt, increase prices, salaries and then hope that all will be fine when the pay back time arrives and borrowing stops.
If we allowed small recessions (debt reductions) along the way for many decades, credit bubble would not have become too big to fail. FED is the problem.
U3 is not an accurate indicator of unemployment. There are many people who want a job but they do not qualify for benefits and they are not counted! Real unemployment is about 18-22% right now.
www.kondratieffwavecycle.com/unemployment/
Employment is a function of money supply. With a deflating money supply, existing prices and salaries cannot be sustained. This is a deflationary crash. M3 is deflating.

Seriously, when can MSNBC be sued for publishing garbage like this? Clearly they have zero respect for Americans and zero respect for journalism.
So, an increase in applications for unemployment payments indicates that the job market is improving.........huh????????

NO. That's what the private sector does once the government quits hamstringing it with its financial gymnastics.
There is no leader. There is a figure head. We have separation of powers so no one can assume control. If you can't steer or push the accelerator you have no control.
"The President can't create jobs, that is what Congress does, they are the Legislative branch."
Oh, brother. It seems some of us just can't imagine a thriving economy without a huge public sector.
Do kids take Civics classes any more?
I drive my kids to school in a Civic. Does that count?
Yes as long as you drive responsibly.
It is not their job to make a job for you. If you are waiting for the democrats to get you a job you will wait a long time. Congressional Republicans need to cut a lot more jobs if they hope to win back the white house next year.

Obama is creating jobs, he just bought 2 new buses for 2.2 million to use for three days. OH but wait the buses were MADE IN CANADA
Talk about change!!!
Errr. Look around and read. A LARGE number of American people have just fallen off the truck.
Who is kidding who?
"There are lies and damn lies and then, there are statistics".
MSNBC writing staff strikes out again. Where do they get these people from ?
They take a "look back average" and pedal it as an "improving" event ?
Do they go to FOX NEWS BUSINESS to hire these morons ?
Why is everyone blaming MSNBC? They are a news reprting agency not statistics gathering organization. They report what they see not what they created.
The smart ones are at Fox News, though journalists in general are not all that intelligent. Look at the typical course of study for journalism majors. Journalism is probably the least demanding of all college majors. It is very obvious that MSNBC gets the bottom of the barrel.
The statistics are up. The statistics are down. The statistics are up. The statistics are down.
The statistics are BS.
Truth
You hit the nail on the head, you cant believe any numbers that come out of DC.
Can you say
Carter stagflation. Ben will say is transitory. You have to fell sorry for Ben.
He has spent his entire life in the Princeton bubble studying the great
depression writings books on how he would have fixed the problem. Now he has the
opportunity and his plans don't work. He can't admit he is wrong now or he has
to admit his entire life is a failure and no one would buy his books. The truth
hurts! Maybe your savior Obama can give another speech.
Yeah we know. There is no way the economy could be improving with that black man in the Whitehouse.
Great point. Turn it into a bumper sticker and make some money.
Merman> There is no way the economy could be improving with that man in the White House. His color is of no concern. His complete lack of competency is the only issue. Don't even think of making this a racial issue....................unless of course you fixate on those sorts of things.
Merman- A true teaparty babbo-rant!
Once again MSNBC digs deep to try and find something that will help promote the Obama agenda, or at least try and distract the reader from the truth.
If you don't like MSNBC then go back to Fox and quit your whining.
Sorry, but occasionally I like to see what the delusional Left is peddling.
It's just MSNBC takes the cake for the spinning lies they create to keep this empty suit propped up.
are you unemployed
IF they are they should find a job.
hahahahahahaha MSNBC, the Obama spin machine!! not my fault, not my fault, not my fault!!
I think Assad is trying to figure out how to say "Kiss my Syrian A$$" in English.
Pres.. what a tool!
are you unemployed
yep sure am and livin' out of my car presently. Just checkin the news out as I do everyday trying to stay up with current events in between the job hunting.
So the president is supposed to find you a job?
The long and short of it is they cant compete on the world market using expensive American labor.
You HAG are a real piece of work
Perry, oh man...
Steph
he was the Gov of Texas not the U.S.
Or government can just do nothing - I guess there is a third choice.
Perry made it easy and profitable to do business in Texas.
I can answer the last question. He sure as heck has.
Why does everyone dis on MSDNC... ooops I mean MSBHO... oops, cats out of the bag.
Why does everyone dis on MSDNC... ooops I mean MSBHO... oops, cats out of the bag.
The only people that dis on MSNBC are the wacks at FAUX.....I think they miss Keith Olbermann.
