AfroAmericans has been around for a century. Their generations has spanned well past 3. So their data is far more established. One can claim that may be the case in the Latino population. However it appears that the trend lines for both race or ethnicity are very similar.

A young black person will generally receive less pay than a white person with the same credentials, because private biz knows that there less alternatives for the blacks or latinos or other minorities. Right now, it is a negative flow meaning that there are more undocumented people moving out of USA than moving in. If the number of movement is significant then the trending line should be improving because your assertion that "the newly hopped across the border "people shew this data" is correct. You claim that more immigrants are leaving than entering the US but have no proof of this assertion when all evidence points to the opposite. All reports I have seen say the rate has slowed because of the economy but still at a plus level, not negative.

Also, with aprox. 20 million illegal aliens that are not going to have good jobs, or work totally off the books but are included in the last census it is going to skew the numbers to an extreme and used for political purposes such as this article is trying to do.

Actually, he is not completely wrong. Have you never heard of the "browning of America." Demographics and Transportation in the United States 2050. According to these statistics within a generation, almost half of the United States will be non-white.

As far as the disrespect that whites have given this President, he is spot on. They have disrespected him like no President I can remember. And I too believe that they would rather drive this country into the ground than cooperate. As the late Dr. Martin Luther King said either we will live together as brothers or perish as fools. I don't know about this writers other posts, but I don't think his concerns expressed above are unfounded and there is something sinister behind this destructive dynamic we are seeing in national politics today.

@thturd: There was a reason the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Affirmative Action acts were passed.

In my experience, I have hired, promoted, demoted and fired people of all colors and ethnicity. I have seen wonderful hard workers and the laziest of workers. In my business, if you worked hard, I fought for you each year when review and raise time came around. If you were a bum, well, I treated you as such.

To be fair, I have worked with minorities who were the laziest sacks of sh!t, but also many who were the hardest workers you've ever met, while the same goes for whites. There was a point in life where I almost gave up thinking about hiring young kids all together, as they wanted to get paid, but not do the work, black, white, yellow, red, whatever color, they were all lacking something, no work ethics at all.

This is not to say I have not seen great injustices in my career towards minorities, with my personal downfall being openly opinionated when I saw this happening. Depending on what part of the country you are in, the reaction was always different, and yes, different regions treat minorities differently as a whole (but not all) in certain areas.

To be fair again, I have also been unsuccessfully sued a couple of times by minorities when I had to fire them beyond their probationary period. Don't get me wrong, I've fired just as many whites as minorities (actually more), but always gave all of them a chance to leave on their own before firing them. I've learned early in life that everything needs to be documented.

With all of this said, honestly, it's much tougher and more expensive to fire a minority, no matter the reason. Look, I didn't fire you because you were any particular color, I fired you because you were a lazy sack of sh!t, or were late all the time, or missed too many days, couldn't learn the trade, all of the above or any other reason you may be jeopardizing the business.

Hence, we have that double edge sword, the laws put in place to help minorities from the bad guys. Laws there to protect minorities from injustices. But these same laws are much more work for all of us, needing to document bad behavior for a time period while paying the lazy bum, losing production, putting your customer base at risk.

I don't know the answer, but understand the headaches. As an example, I hire a new employees today, he/she seems great through the probationary period, we decide to hire him/her on as full time employee. A few months go by, things start to change, production is down, customers start complaining, the business starts losing customers because of this employee. What do you do? Besides the talks and usual warnings that have gone on with no progress in attitude, performance or behavior.

The answer is not easy, sadly, you must first consider the employees ethnicity, if they are white, you can normally let them go and never hear from them again. Now, if they are a minority, those warnings need to be documented, signed by all parties involved, and meet a certain time period, and still chances of being sued seem much greater.

Anybody else realize how close the rhetoric not only of this article; but, of the President's speech matches up with what the Nazi Party did with regard to the Jews in the 1930's.

It started out blame the Rich because they aren't paying enough. Now it's the whites are making more money and are getting wealthy while minorities are losing everything. Where does this end?

We need the demonizing of portions of our population to end.

We don't need someone to blame for our problems, we need our problems solved. In short, we need good paying private sector jobs.

The President's philosophy for getting those jobs, is to take money from the economy, take a portion of that money for the government, and to put a smaller amount back into the economy. It's very much like trying to get a ballon to blow up to a larger size by taking air out of the balloon and trying to put that same air into the balloon with a pump that leaks a small amount on each stroke. The balloon is going to keep shrinking with that approach.

In order for the economy to grow, it needs more money going into it, not less. The only way that will occur is if we are producing and selling more goods and services to each other and to the rest of the world. We need more incentives for people who have money to invest in creating the jobs that people need. This is never going to occur if we keep building up walls of separation between us based on everything from Race to Wealth.

Reelecting anyone that so divides us when we need to be working together is complete lunacy.

EVERYONE needs to pay their fair share of taxes. Why should Grandma have to pay more for her social security when the richest of the rich would rather see this country go down the toilet than pay an extra few dollars they would never miss in the first place. The rich get over their guilt by thinking that anyone who needs help or a handout is a lazy bum with a sense of entitlement. That's just not true. Anyone who is repsonsible and lives within their means can get sick or hurt and be unable to work and lose everything.

As far as name calling of a sitting president, you need to only go back to obama's campaign. This is when it all started. Go back and listen to his campaign speeches or his debates with bush. Something to consider---this is the reason why you find so many minorities who believe that a government job is the "Holy Grail" of salaried employment. Even today, that's the best bet for a "meaningful" job at a living wage. It's not an accident that 13% of the US population (black Americans) is also about 25% percent of the US Army.

I also think this explains why so many black men seem to be fixated on the entertainment industry---where else do you see "brothers" running corporations and making millions at it? By and large, IMO, even after all the short-lived affirmative action, black Americans don't get many---if any---real shots at the "brass ring" in corporate America. Show me a true shot-caller there, and I'll show you someone who's probably self-employed.

Younger black Americans I've talked to almost expect, for the most part, to be locked out of the private sector, or to be solidly glued to the lowest rungs of the ladder. They then start to ask themselves, "How am I gonna achieve the American Dream if I can't even get a job?"

BTW, I'm a college-educated black American, and I've never had a government job outside military service---and if I ever decided to look for a position in a large organization, I wouldn't even consider the private sector. For me at least, the private sector proved a waste of time many years ago...

I'm really not surprised...but when you take away "Hispanics" that are accepted and identify as white, the numbers probably are even more startling. Multiple reason exist for this disparity.

1) Non-whites don't invest their money in riskier financial options. They much rather put their money in the bank than invest it, they don't trust financial markets.
2) Whites make more money for similar jobs, leaving them more room to tuck money away in 401ks and such.
3) Professional non-whites are younger and are more likely to be paying 300 or 400 a month in student loans.
4) Non-whites don't collectively own anything. Whites hire their own, as reflected by the unemployment statistics. The Unemployment Rates follow the color gradient (white, Asian, "Hispanic"(Brown), Black). We won't succeed economically as long as we are relying on whites to employ us at a decent rate, and pay a comparable wage to whites.
5) Non whites are chasing the "American Dream" (a house), while that is probably one of the worst things to invest in if you don't have large amounts of cash in case something bad happens. I think whites don't volunteer this type of information to non-white people for whatever reason (probably racism)

I have never been called "white" for going to college. Considering that 1/5 black adults ARE college educated (which is a lot given the fact that prior to 1970, few got the opportunity), there would be a lot of "white" black people.

The author of this article is trying to make this a race issue by leaving out important factors like education. How many of these people suffering lower earnings have a minimum high school education? It doesn't say. It should.

The article mentions blacks and hispanics. I didn't grow up around many hispanics, so I don't know why they have lower education levels, thus I didn't take a stab at that. Note that ASAINS are a minority and not on this list. Probably because they have a long history of reaching for high academic status and are in return in critical higher paying jobs and NOT on the list of affected minorities.

I'm not trying to make this a racial issue. It's about PERSONAL choices people make, not race. Making it about race is merely a way to make excuses for one's own shortcomings so you can blame society instead of your own lack of judgement.

Why do you think they the radicals are grabbing all the money they can get, insuring higher unemployment & pushing back the advancements of African American. TekKnowledge, I seen first hand a black person being called white for going to college while on a public bus in the Twin Cities. A group of thugs who were all black kept hassling every person that came onto the bus. When a rather studious looking black man got onto the bus they immediately started making fun of him for "acting white" since after all trying to better yourself is for white people only.

A lot of black people I've worked with have a big chip on their shoulder and they would rather blame racism than their own poor choices in life. The constant comparison between black versus white by most of the black folk I've worked with gets old after a while. You are absolutely wrong about that, as many studies have shown. I'll cite Charles Murray as my expert. (Try reading "Losing Ground" or "The Bell Curve.) Who do you have? Murray has written extensively on such matters and has shown that just the opposite is true.

If you prefer anecdotes, I can also cite my personal employment history. Every employer I ever worked for (private enterprise or government) had an explicit policy to hire similarly qualified blacks or women over white men. They had to do it or else the race police would be after them.

Let's see if I understand this correctly. The young, investing in a piece of real estate they can't afford, are compared to the old with a savings account and an IRA. Comparing one's "lifetime" investment portfolio against another's based on their ages?

The author of the article needed to throw the race issue in just as another distractor. But what the author isn't discussing is the comparison of young blacks versus young whites and old blacks versus old whites. The author also skewed the story by comparing median worth versus mean worth. Let's review the differences. In median, there are an equal number of data points above a center point as there are below; while in the mean it is an average of all data points. Suppose the data points were 2,3,6,300,350 (in thousands of dollars) for the blacks. The median is $6K while the mean is $132.2K. Suppose the data points were 2,3,113,125,130. The median is $113K while the mean is $74.5K.

My point is that comparing apples and oranges makes one realize that the price of the fruit can be different.

Cyd I understand what you are trying to say. However there are just as many whites as there are blacks that want a free ride. I support higher education for everyone no matter what their race! However, the government has made it so easy for people to become dependent on social programs such as welfare, food stamps, free housing, medicaid, etc. It seems impossible for individuals on these programs to break free from it when the kids keep coming, you are getting older and prospects become fewer and fewer! With that being said, it boils down to personal choices. It's hard work to actually work and go to school and it's not easy. People that make irresponsible choices such as having numerous children out of wedlock should not expect the taxpayers to be their only means of support. I think that my dad said it right when he told us kids that if you don't work you don't eat and it's as simple as that. People need to start taking some personal responsibility for their actions.

I wish you supported your claim by some fact and study. This was a staged well versed systematic economic lynching of Blacks and Latinos in the US. In the first place to make sure whites will not be blamed for disparity they placed Mr. Obama to be a president. Now comes "the US Could Not be Raciest State for it is Run by a Black President". Did you ever think that your individual circumstances may not reflect the reality of most people? The race police comment sounds more emotional than logical. I will make my point short. I am college educated, afro-american, and unemployed. I am currently in school and I assume the numbers in this article don't lie. If there is a particular inequity based on racial demographics to this porportion, then one has to wonder what good the civil rights movement has done. Our business leaders must not respect the minority demographic if the disporportion gap is that wide, unless we assume that minorities are uneducated. I think there is an equity problem among the demographics, and if it is the case, our country will lose it's middle class almost entirely by 2050. In other words, who will be able to keep the middle class status afloat if we allow companies and policies to dictate our social accord? I thought that was the job of government. We have to decide as people if capitalism is more important than democracy. If we don't, then we will lose our democracy and it's people to corporate greed and entitlement.

In many parts of the Nation, whites ARE the minority. At the rate things are going...just give it a couple generations and this issue will resolve itself.

Anyone with an ounce of brain matter could see that the TEA party started their protest against Obama the days immediately after the 2008 election. You can call it anything you want but it appears that the TEA party are using the protest of higher taxes which never changed under Obama by the way to attack a black president which they will never accept as their commander in chief. A lot of black people I've worked with have a big chip on their shoulder and they would rather blame racism than their own poor choices in life.

So, black people start from the same place as white people, then proceed to make poor choices where white people make good ones. Why is that?

It is interesting how this riles up the right-wing nuts so badly that they don't even bother to read the article!

1) The statistics are based on HOUSEHOLDS, not per capita. This essentially removes much of the number of children weight from the equation. A household is a household and, by age and demographic, is pretty much a social constant and is treated as such as social scientists struggle to understand change.

2) This is not new information. There has been a steady loss of wealth by all non-white minorities since around 2001 or 2002. The only confound in the findings is that the census is only taken once every ten years and there were two problems with the last census: a) the major portion of the decline started just after the last census, and b) the last census seriously undercounted minorities because of resistance to using "overlaid sampling" methodologies that are used everywhere else in social science from advertising to city planning.

3) In the social sciences, disparities among races are very easy stuff to study. This is because the data is easily available and there is a grotesque amount of data that already shows disparities. Grad students love to jump into this area because it is statistically safe since the outcome is usually known and only the extent is at question. I read a student thesis the other day that was simply sending out thousands of identical resumes --- except for the first name, D'Shawn versus Jeremy. And counting the responses. Needless to say it was about 20 to 1 for Jeremy. This sort of this is obvious and easy to document and literally thousands of social scientists have done so.

4) Dr. Murray is a political scientist, not a social scientist. He works for a far right propaganda mill whose interest is in electing right wingers to political office. His training is more similar to that of a historian than that of a statistician. His two books are generally considered junk science of pop science by serious scientists since they posit positions that are either a) unprovable or b) unsupported.

5) No private employer and certainly not the government would generally favor minority hires and promotions over whites. It is just too easy a trap to avoid. This is because personnel processes are usually set up so that the actual manipulation of the position takes place in the absence of identifying racial data. The main reason for this is not very obvious to anyone except a social scientist. Racism varies from area to area and region to region. In Hawaii there is almost zero anti-Oriental or anti-Native Hawaiian sentiment, but strong anti-black sentiment. In North Dakota, there is zero anti-Oriental sentiment and little anti-Black sentiment, but horrendous anti-Native American sentiment. In the South, there is little anti-Oriental sentiment and massive anti-Black and anti-Latino sentiment. On the west coast there is serious anti-Oriental sentiment and anti-Latino sentiment, but surprisingly little anti-Black sentiment. It varies and you can't total up your racist scorecard without checking where you are.

6) And I can't help taking a last swipe at Murray. His PhD thesis was an attempt to "explain" why Aborigines in Australia, despite being across the board 15% higher in IQ than white Australians, are consistently excluded from the social process. His conclusion, that "they are lazy." This speaks volumes about how a political scientist perceives the world completely differently than a social scientist.

My wife is a PhD psychologist, a full tenured professor and center director in a Tier 1 research university. She is a leading expert in health disparities and in her field as well, there is clear, easily determined evidence that minorities are all sliding backwards and that whites are advancing. But the newer data shows that within that white advance, the lower half of whites have broken loose from the whole of whites and are drifting, like a calved iceberg, away from the upper half of whites and paralleling that of minorities.

Much of the disparity is explained by education and the illegitimate birth rate among blacks and hispanics. Married college graduates have a far higher net worth than other demographics. A single mom with kids of any race faces nearly insurmountable odds of achieving financial independence.

The civil rights act of 1964 was passed by Republican Senators. 18 DEMOCRAT senators voted against it.

I totally agree with inconvenient truth, your choices dictate your condition. It's much easier to blame others then yourself. I'm a state worker making an average pay because that's all I was willing to get out of myself. I chose not to study thus maintaining my C average. I chose to enlist in the military and not college. Realizing that I was eventually going to leave the military ,I got into a field I could use on the outside. So here I sit, no one else's fault but my own.

It was interesting. I was watching an interview with someone from the grio.com and he stated that it was "because whites have more generational wealth". Well I am white and I have other white friends and none of us had any wealth passed down to us. So I don't know what white people these guys are talking about but I know I'm not included in it, and in fact I call that rascist. Everyone is looking at incomes, which may be influenced by social issues, whatever you call them. Not one person paid attention to spending habits, and that's an equally important part of equation, because resulting wealth is sum of income over time minus sum of spending. And, unlike income, spending patterns have less social impact and greater cultural impact.

I've been to many offices (such is the consultant's life), and noticed that blacks were usually the best dressed ones, though presumably not ones with highest incomes. Being dressed so well costs. Same goes to jewelry - blacks tend to wear more of it, and it doesn't come free. And if you pay attention to the corporate parking lot, blacks usually drive cars newer and more expensive than their white peers.

So maybe, instead of blaming social ills, somebody should just pass on another pair of Prada shoes and LV bag? Maybe it makes sense to tone down on that Lexus option package, or even give a good look to a regular plain Toyota? And really the world will not come crashing down on your head if you don't get yourself another fancy golden chain, and buy a treasury bond instead.

I have seen many people post about the value of an education and I have seen some post that hard work is not as equally important. The two go hand in hand. I have a BSME degree and make a very good salary, I also haul hay and cut tobacco on the side. Not so much for the money but to help out neighbors that can not get help, apparently $10 an hour for farm labor is not good enough for people anymore. I say this is because people have somehow developed a sense of entitlement, they should make extraordinary high wages for little amounts of work. You get what you earn it is that simple, and the government has no right to take a larger percent from someone because they go out and earn more.

I learned everything that many should know when I was still in grade school. Education and learning are the keys to succes....so work hard at your studies, do your best, and don't blame others for your laziness. Oddly, the article mentiones minorities but it does not discuss Asians. I guess there aren't any stats to report there. That is because Asians probably do as well if not better than whites. That is because they have an incredible drive (or are being driven hard by their parents to study and learn). In fact if you pay attention to the media, they tell us that the minorities (hispanics and blacks) that this article refers to make fun of each other saying "don't act Asian." God forbid a person in the hispanic/black communities actually study and learn.

When you have a group, like African Americans, where in popular culture the most significant thing in their neighborhoods is that they don't snitch on each other then you aren't going to have positive results in anything. Here is a group of people whose culture is ingraining in its youngsters that above all else never snitch. When you see a bad guy do something don't snitch. Well that is all well and good until you realize that by not "snitching" you build the criminal up and make him even stronger by making his job easier. He stays out on the streets longer and therefore commits more crime. The irony of course is that by not snitching, a person in one of these communities might be indirectly responsible for the murder of one of their own friends or loved ones at the hands of a criminal that they chose not to snitch on years earlier. The fact is that this aspect of black culture if brought out to a far extent would lead to anarchy and dramatic levels of vigilantism. It is sad that I have never heard anyone or specifically any black leaders condemn this practice. I guess even the black leaders are afraid to stand up in front of their own people and say this is crazy, and we should stop it asap.

Lastly, I find it ridiculous that this article uses the term minorities to discuss hispanics and blacks. A minority can be any group, so if you are going to throw the term around you might consider being more specific (i.e. saying minority = black or hispanic).

pjam - for one, race isn't clear cut. People from the middle east are technically classified as 'white caucasian' (depending on how you use the term). People tend to lump regionality or locality with race (i.e. 'Asian' being from asia would include russians, who usually considered white)

To the rest: I've never heard of a black person being called 'white' for going to college. It probably depends on where you live, and where the black person in question lives. I.E. if they're in the suburbs people wouldn't care.

Black men get paid very close to white men, but studies have shown that black 'sounding' names on resumes garner 50% less callbacks for equal resumes as a white 'sounding' name. Racism still exists.

I can't say that 'oh just make better choices' - I sure as hell didn't grow up in the ghetto. Did any of you? Poorer areas are still predominantly full of minority groups. Its a terrible cycle because poorer = rent = less money to the schools (which rely on house taxes) = worse shot at a decent future. Some make it out. A lot don't. I don't know how to end the bleedin' cycle, but I'm not blind to the fact that it IS there.

Oh, as a side note, in recessions and depressions the unemployment rate for minorities (blacks, spefically) is FAR higher than whites. Not as a matter of racism - I hope - but because they tend to get the lowest ranking jobs and those are the first to go. When the recession is gone, they have a harder time getting back in because they now have a hole in their work history.

Mark made a point (2.13) that, while not directly related to the article, rings very true. He commented that firing minorities is more difficult and expensive than firing whites, for the simple reason that minorities tend to sue for discrimination (or other forms of constructed discharge). My mother recently retired after 26 years of managing a business. The stories she told me about documenting every step of the process, and bringing this documentation to court when the ex-employee sued, said it all. Every lawsuit filed was by a minority! Not ONE white person sued. And the reason was always the same - racial discrimination. Often times, the company lawyers would use her Mexican married name as part of their defense.

Of course, with this kind of statistic, it makes one wonder how willing an employer is to HIRE a minority; knowing that, if they don't pan out (and, to her experience, race had nothing to do with that) it will be HELL to try and get rid of them.

While I have cited my personal anecdotal experience, I would also refer you to Charles Murray's work. He has published a number of books directly related to the topic. I can't do them justice in Newsvine, but he looks at hard numbers and draws inescapable conclusions. One of the conclusions is that "affirmative action" has worked beyond its backers wildest dreams. I believe I first read his conclusions in "Losing Ground", but I could be wrong about that.

The MSNBC article (which I believe came from AP) is written at about the average level of what passes for journalism these days. People who are good at numbers and statistics tend not to be drawn to journalism. While perhaps not inaccurate, the article does tend to overlook the difference between wealth and income. There is a huge difference.

A man who makes a million dollars a year but spends it all would have a net worth of zero. Meanwhile, (as observed in "The Millionaire's Mind") there are millions of Americans who have lived frugally on middle-class incomes who have amassed over a million dollars in wealth. Perhaps the article should have asked "Why do blacks and Latinos save so little compared to whties?"

As for the "race police" crack, I couldn't resist taking a shot at people whom I believe deserve it. Put Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton right at the top of that list. It's hard for me to imaging anyone who has done more harm to black society than they have.

Finally, back to my anecdotes about my employers. Were I black, I could have sued and won big-time at every job I ever had. In each one, there were people of one "protected class" or another who obviously had lesser credentials, less talent, and less experience than I who were favored over me in both salary and opportunity. One woman was so useless that her job was referred to as "the broad slot" by everyone who knew her.

Think about the term "protected class". It's a legal term of art demanded, bought and paid for by the "race police". I don't know how to interpret it except to consider it a badge of inferiority for anyone who wears it. What a terrible thing to do to anyone!

Yeah, there's still some bias around, but not a lot. Many years ago when I wanted to land a government contract, the bureaucrats wanted me to fill out some giant form promising to adhere to whatever affirmative action regulations they were promoting at the time. Rather than accept that insult, I sent them a one sentence letter that said that I promised to hire the best qualified person I could find for any and every position because it was in my best interest to do so and anything else would be incredibly stupid. Amazingly, I won the contract.

As you can tell, I don't believe there's much discrimination. If there were, those who didn't discriminate would run the others out of business. If employers are passing over better qualified employees to hire white males, then the smart employers will hire those passed over and run the company with the inferior white employees out of business.

Back on topic - this study is pointless. The only way the study could be congruent if all three groups lived in the same community, and were raised exactly the same and then analyze the results. Then you would have something. When you are comparing groups who have been raised with different moral and social values, and having different standards of living, the results will be quite different. Doesn't make one group worse than the other, just shows the results of that type of environment.

I think you dismiss Charles Murray a little too casually. Just because you don't respect his background doesn't mean that he has to be wrong.

A few years ago, I attended an event at which Murray debated James Flynn (he of the Flynn effect) on whether the Black/White IQ gap was narrowing and would it ever close. (Murray predicted "no", Flynn said "maybe".) Flynn proudly stated that he was a shameless liberal/socialist, so this was not one member of the choir singing to another. The relevant part of the story is that they both agreed that the average black IQ in the U.S. is roughly 15 points lower than the average white IQ. They also agreed that at every level of education and employment from elementary school through mid-level professional jobs, that blacks are promoted and paid in excess of what one should expect based upon all other factors. Given that "affirmative action" demands quotas (oops, "goals"), how could it happen any other way?

I don't want to defend Murray too much. I haven't seen his raw numbers and have not seen exactly how he drew his conclusions, but statistics ain't rocket surgery.

By the way, you seemed to praise social scientists over political scientists. So, one final anecdote: The single dumbest, least competent professional person I've ever met was a black woman sociology PhD who was so dumb that she did not know the difference between a mean and a median. (I asked her.) She once asked me (in an otherwise incomprehensible written sentence without matching subject and verb) to find out what the "average sex of the clients" was. I'm pretty sure I know how she got her PhD and her job (working for the government), but I've never figured out how she graduated from high school.

What is the point to this article? I am a little tired of these comparisons. The media will find a way to interject race into a slow news day in whatever means possible. Race relations will never improve because the media will keep pointing out things that can't be controlled. What is the resolution to this problem? Are rich white people supposed to give their money to minorities to even things out? If that is the case, what about me?

There isn't a race problem in this country during these modern times. There is a family problem. Kids born in any color that don't know who there daddy is. Single moms that buck the system by having more kids to collect more welfare. Men that don't give a damn about the sperm donations they leave. Kids are growing up without adult supervision. Without two parents to guide them toward success. We have kids running wild with no direction learning how to live from people on the streets. Drugs and violence all over this country but lets send more troops to Pakistan. The United States can't even balance a checkbook and we are still discussing black and white.

You want balance, bring back jobs. How are the incomes in the countries that took all the good paying jobs that didn't need a college education? There are different levels of intelligence in all of us. There are a lot of kids that aren't meant for college. What we have done is created a system of discrimination by education. Pretty soon you will need college to work at Burger King. This is the new way to keep minorities out of the labor force without breaking any laws.

The focus has turned to greed and greed alone. It is the me me me attitude. This attitude starts with all our leaders and their corporate friends and lobbyists and it doesn't matter if there is a D or an R in front of their names. There is no pride in this country anymore. It has been sold to the highest bidder and until we focus on our country and its people we are destined to have this argument until the end of days.

Jumping off my soapbox because all of this was written in anger. My point would still be the same I would have just worded it differently.

I only dismiss Dr. Murray because he is not a scientist as he claims but espouses on a number of issues for which he has no qualifications, including climatology, genetics, history, etc. He has written ONE book and "co-authored" one work with another person (who claims to have done all the writing.) But he has spoken on the behalf of several right-wing "think tanks" that are all variants of the American Enterprise Institute which operates under over 200 names just for this purpose. His occupation is generally listed as columnist or pundit for what that6 is worth.

Since neither race nor intelligence have any particular definition, racist and intelligence lends itself to cherrypicking of data to support any conclusion you'd like. There are four contemporary positions regarding the cause of racial IQ gaps. The first is that these gaps reflect real difference in average intelligence, which are caused by a combination of environmental factors and heritable differences in brain function. A second position is that differences in average cognitive ability between races exist and are caused entirely by social and/or environmental factors. A third position holds that differences in average cognitive ability between races do not exist, and that the differences in average test scores are the result of inappropriate use of the tests themselves. Finally, a fourth position is that there is no such thing as race, and that any comparisons between races are therefore meaningless. Any one, or all four positions can be inferred from the same data.

The absolute problem with Dr. Murray's suppositions is that he bases ever5ything on Black versus White and there is NO evidence that breaks down in this way. There are numerous sub-groups that are far outside that "bell shaped curve" that he likes to allude to. You find individuals for all races at all points under that curve, which invalidates his theories completely. For example there are two Jewish sub groups of "white" that routinely score around 15 IQ points above the median white. They are around 2% of the white population but take around 30% of all scientific honors. Ditto for certain groups of Orientals and even Negorids.

I favor social scientists (my wife is one) above political scientists only in that social scientists seek answers as to the functioning of individuals and their social groups. Political science is the study of governments, public policies and political processes, systems, and political behavior. In the form that Dr. Murray pursues, race and intelligence are not within that purview. The idea that either race or intelligence should form a part of the political process is basically a 17th century idea and has not had currency since.

Anecdotes do not impress me. I was trained in my youth as an intelligence analyst and was taught a simple analytical principle that has held me in good stead: Separate the words from the source and evaluate each independently. Then combine the two and see what you have. You do not have pearls of wisdom from swine and you do not have lies from the mouths of angels. But lies from swine and wisdom from angels are both worth searching out --- so the one can be embraced and the other avoided.

Given the history of racism in this country, the surprise is not that the vestiges of slavery and human nature itself remain, but that they are as weakened as they are. This was a nation that from its beginning was so wedded to slavery that it permeated every aspect of life. Even though the world had largely6 abandoned slavery, the Founding Fathers were so in love with it that they allowed 3/5 of every slave to be counted as a person for apportionment, guaranteeing (they thought) a future plurality to slave-owning states. We never mention how wedded this country was to slavery and how the remnants of that disgrace remain today. But each person has to live in and with themselves. For some it is just easier.

And BTW, your question about median and mean is a trick question. For the vast majority of data sets they are identical even though they represent completely different things. Many people use "average" when talking to non-scientists in order to try to use an approximate term that is easily understood at the fourth grade level.

The fact that the study is talking about households is precisely the reason that it is worthless. Without the reader knowing anything about the households all these statistics are meant to do is trick people and create anger.

If you are comparing these 3 races you would need to crunch some other statistics to get an accurate picture. If one race is more likely to have single parent households, then it would make sense if that race had less wealth per household. Wouldn't other variables like cultural spending and investing patterns need to be accounted for as well? Not to mention the number of people per household? If those people are of working age? Any of this sound important to get an accurate picture?

According to Thomas Sowell if you compare the top and bottom 20% of households, without any regard to race, the numbers end up like this study. It shows that the wealthy 20% at the top are really killing it compared to the bottom 20%. What Sowell points out of course is that without knowing anything else those numbers are extremely misleading. He indicates that once you look inside you find that households at the top have more family members that work and bring in an income. In addition, the bottom 20% logged far few hours worked per household per week than 20% of households. Once you have some background the numbers make a lot of sense.

Also, what was that second to last paragraph of yours? Was that a history lesson with a sprinkle of your guilt, or a guilt trip for the rest of us? The founders (including founding fathers and regular people) had almost everything right, and they sullied it in the most disgusting fashion. Never should any human use force on another human to compel them. Slavery and rape of course are two that come to mind. They got almost everything right, but they tarnished it with that bad judgement. But that guilt trip isn't working, I won't feel remorse for their actions. I write to quibble with your last post. My daughter (a liberal wannabe) worked for AEI for several years. (She was known as their closet liberal.) They're definitely a right-wing think tank, but I am unaware of "200 variants". I think it is a fair comparison to call them the conservative counterpart to The Brookings Institute.

As for Murray's books, I own a number of them (signed copies, thanks to my daughter) the that he authored himself. Among them are Losing Ground, Real Education, and In Our Hands. (I bought The Bell Curve back when it was a best-seller in the news in the early 1990s.) A search on Amazon.com shows others that I have not read.

Re mean versus median, my question to the incompetent sociologist was not a trick question. It was a straight challenge to her to tell me the difference between the two - a difference that was taught to me in junior high school before Algebra I. (Full disclosure - my educational background was math and engineering.) The woman was a self-entitled black woman without knowledge or talent who was sucking the government teat. When seriously challenged, she screamed "RACIST!" and hired lawyers. In the room when I asked her the question were a half-dozen of her superiors who were aghast that I would dare expose a naked emperor. The silence was deafening. None came to her defense or mine - it was a travesty that none dared to admit. I grant that it's just an anecdote, but surely you don't think it's not illustrative of a larger truth.

Murray has made an interesting point in several of his books. It is that it doesn't matter if the black/white IQ difference is hereditary or environmental. Society has become stratified by IQ, like it or not. Smart people do well, not-so-smart people do not so well. Smart people marry smart people and have children who have every advantage and grow up smart. It hardly matters which of heredity or environment matter - the progeny of the smart end up being smart - and successful and rich.

You might find it interesting that Murray has advocated that a large well-funded (however many billions of dollars it would take) study that would test every theory on how to close the IQ gap. In particular, whatever environmental advantages would close the gap should be produced for the study. His only proviso is that the study be big enough and well-funded enough that it either was successful or was unassailable in its methodology.

well, I see this topic is bringing out the best in everybody. Some of you may be missing the point. There was a time, not to long ago, in our nations history that minorities (namely blacks) were not allowed to do. Few examples: play baseball in the Major Leagues, have recordings played on most radio stations, serve equally in the military and, in certain parts of the country, eat in restaurants or use rest room facilities that weren't designated specifically for them. That is exactly the point I made in a post on the upper thread. If you compare households you will see data like they ended up getting. They can't compare households and expect to get numbers that make an accurate representation.

What if white households are generally larger and have more working family members? Well of course then the white households will probably be building more wealth. Or what if black households are more likely to have only one bread winner, then of course they will have less wealth.

In case you forgot, the tea party movement just recently started in the last couple of years. Were they up on capital hill with the rest of the overspending politicians (both parties) when this bill was passed? No. If tea party had been there they would have voted against it as they understand that it is too expensive and over our budget. I just returned last month from a few weeks in Liberia. Many folks there work for food, rather than money (average per capita income is around $200 per year). How about those who want out of social programs, but can't get out? There are tons of women out there trying to get out, yet, we don't supply simple child care for them to be able to go to school, or transportation, for that matter. In big cities, especially, where prices are astronomical, a dollar does not stretch as far as smaller communities, and commute can be much longer. My sister-in-law tried to go to school, and guess what? She couldn't go because there was no one to take care of her baby. On top of that, her commute would have been almost 2 hours to come and go to school using public transportation, to go about 12 miles. When she looked for a job that would pay for childcare, the amount of money she would have made, which BTW was almost the same amount that she needed for child care, in a place that she trusted (plenty of places with licenses, not many many run by trust worthy individuals in those neighborhoods) her benefits would have been cut drastically. Rock, I would like you to meet hard place.

Let us get one thing clear, NO ONE WANTS TO BE IN A SOCIAL PROGRAM. People are in social programs because they need help. Sometimes, they don't know how and they repeat mistakes. There are a few that will milk the system, and there are equally white collar criminals that do the same.

For those that claim that he or she got out, well good for you. But, can you truly sit there and tell me that you are that much better than those who could not get out of their cycle. Now why don't you help them? Don't give me this crap about you can only help those who want to help themselves!

I grew up in a single parent household, in abject poverty, my dad made minimum wage and managed to raise three kids on that.

My older brother barely graduated high school, has three DUI's and the only job he has ever held were at companies owned by friends.

My younger brother also barely graduated high school, has been in and out of prison for theft and burglary and has three kids he never sees.

I graduated high school with honors, placed in multple state sport competitions, was in concert band and pep band. I have worked for the same company for 14 years. I got married and bought a house prior to having children. And I am currently working on my MBA and holding a 4.0 GPA while raising two kids.

Life is absolutely determined by the choices YOU make, and you can absolutely make more out of your life if you choose to.

As for why don't I help those who are worse off than me, I always buy an extra set of school supplies for each of my childrens grades to be given to a student who can't afford them. I always send double the money asked for field trips to sponsor a child who can't afford it. I have volunteered my time at the local food bank since I was in high school. I have offered to buy food for those asking for money on the street (for some reason, they are never willing to take the food).

You mean childcare to go to school in order to get off of welfare, and stay off of it? Um, yeah I am all for paying for it! Considering a LARGE portion of those who get off of welfare, with no continuing education, end up back on within two years. If an extra $100 a week, for a few years, gets her off PERMANENTLY, wouldn't it be worth it? Oh that's right! She didn't have an abortion, so you IDIOTS are satiated. Who cares what happens after the baby is born? Right? Abortion is murder, but keep ignoring the fact that children need food and proper healthcare. You want people out of the welfare program? You are assuming that there are the same amount of numbers on each side of the median that make up the 10% of the upper and lower incomes. I highly doubt that is the case. I am not talking taking 10% of the numbers on each side of the median but taking 10% of the lowest income people and 10% of the highest income people, there is no way it is the same amount of numbers across the 3 races. Hopefully that makes sense.

The best way to think of the median value is by imagining every "household" in America in a single file line, in order of total wealth. The median wealth for whites, then, is the family in the exact middle of the line - that family's wealth is $113K.

If what you mean is that you want to remove the top 10% of upper income households, you would go to the rich end of the line and start pulling households out of the line, until 10% of the line has been removed. Likewise, you would do the same for the 10% of the lowest incomes. Once you're done, the family in the middle is still in the middle. The only difference is that they only have 39.9999% of households in front of them in line and 39.9999% behind them.

Now, what I think you mean is something different, and a little more complex. I think you mean that you would remove 10% of total white wealth from the front of the line, and then 10% of total white wealth from the back of the line. This might equate to 100 households from the rich end of the line and 100,000 households from the poor end. This would actually push the median to the richer end of the line.

It could work a lot better if the republicans had not filibustered most legislation in the beginning of Obama's term. They then obtained the majority and now they are still not willing to work with the president. They are always talking about families tightening their belt. Families also make compromises for the benefit of the entire family. They said not to raise taxes on "the job creators" back in December, we did'nt and still there are no jobs. Republicans are obsessed with keeping their tax cuts and loopholes. They do not give a heck about those who are suffering. Imperial why didn't you go with the German company, they tend to treat their people well if they like them. I'm a construction worker by trade, spent most of my life doing it. The only other trade I learned was in the military and really can't use what I learned in the private sector.

I still refuse to accept food stamps or money from the gov., yeah I know I'm paying hard for this decision. Lost my house and I'm still unemployed so I can feel the hardship most are feeling these days. I'm forever grateful my children are grown and I don't have to worry about that too.

Being my age and with a high school education makes it really hard to accomplish anything at this point. I have some college schooling but lack the funds and ability to continue. Hopefully things will get better and new will abound for everyone. The only thing I see here I can agree with all of the statements, is our government has sold this country out to corporate America. jolly my momma was the same way, single mom (my "donor" liked his alcohol and girlfriend more then he liked us) worked while finishing school she landed a job with the County Office of Education, she's now been there for 25 years, I remember her having holes in her underwear basically so that my brother and I had nice clothes, thankfully my Grandparents helped us for the first couple of years (they let us live rent free in their second home) I was raised that family helps family instead of going on the Government teat.

We're trying to raise our daughters the same way, though they have it quite a bit easier then we did, they will never have to worry about how they're going to pay for college (their dad gave them his GI Bill and we started accounts for them the minute I found out I was pregnant) though some days it makes us worry that they're becoming entitlement queens.

The rich didn't all work for it, and not all poor people are lazy. How about those who did the right thing for YEARS, were laid off two years ago and can't get a job, or did get a job, but only got something near minimum wage? How about people like my mother, who took a LARGE paycut, just to be able to have a job, meanwhile, the CEO in her company got a nice fat bonus? BTW, my mother now does the job of 3 people, works an additional 20 hours a week, and still can't keep up with her work. How is she not earning her money? And forget about going to another job, that isn't an option considering there are no jobs right now.

And what about my dad? He should have been able to retire at 65 with his retirement fund, but guess what? Nope. He can't. It was stolen by the rich when they panicked and caused the crash. So you can take your whole "rich people earned this and that" and shove it. There is NO reason for those who have worked their entire lives to be thrown to the wolves like they have. My father has worked, legally I might add, in this country for over 40 years, and because the rich decided they wanted more money than what they have saved in tax cuts, they stole his ability to retire.

My wife and I live very, very comfortably on social security, but, to do that we moved to another country. Not everyone can or will make that decision and follow through due to their particular situation. I can understand why those that immigrated to the USA would not do this. For those that want, your golden years can be very rewarding, if you research living in another country.

Immigrants tend to be the poorest of a nation. The poorest tend to commit the most crimes. Thus, when immigration is allowed (especially in large amounts) crime usually goes up. It goes up a lot of the ones immigrating are from a poor or second-or-third world country.

So its not just 'muslim' immigration. Its immigration in general. Give it a generation or two. If countries stopped all immigration, they'd dry up because many can't afford their welfare programs on a dwindling tax base.

Your post contradicts itself. On one hand, you say that if countries stopped all immigration, they'd dry up because many can't afford their welfare programs on a dwindling tax base. On the other hand you say immigration in large amounts causes crime to go up (which is true) because these immigrants are from second and third world countries.

Obviously, it is these very immigrants that are a drain on a country's welfare programs and other resources and they return nothing but increased crime and squalor. Allowing mass migrations of these third world pariahs only serves to erode a country's culture and well being, eventually destroying the host country, and this is also occurring in several European countries.

If countries stopped these mass immigrations they would be far better off as evident by looking back some twenty years ago when mass immigration was largely non-existent. No one can dispute that the Norway of twenty or thirty years ago was far better off than the Norway of today. Actually, that can be said of many countries, the U.S. included.

Thats exactly the point! The wealthy should pay their share this time, & not always on the poor & middle class! Also the blame shouldn't be on average Americans wanting to own their own homes as the cause of the housing disaster.That was a well thought out plan ,founded on greed, that was handed to the public.I know firsthand, because when my brother bought a home I told him to stick to a term loan ONLY, the sub-prime loan just didn't sit right with me. However he could not qualify for a term loan ,only option he had was the prime loan which he can get with ease...... devious huh? If the bigots in Washington would lead for the good of the people & not focus on making the president fail, they could get alot done for this country! Wheres the brotherly love??

The ONLY option he had was not to take a loan that gambled that house price would increase and they could refinance.

He had the option to WAIT and continue to live someplace cheaper. But like many others the sense of entitlement says I have to have everything now and I will just scream the evil RICH forced me to sign.

Stupid people go to Las Vegas everyday thinking they are going to win big. So far people still laugh at them when their plan to get rich fails. Only way stupid people will learn I guess is when we put them on TV and laugh at them for not reading documents or signing stuff they do really understand. They would still not understand subprime loans but they do understand not wanting to get laughed at.

Folks it wasn't "the government" that gave out loans to people not qualified by income and savings.........it was THE BANKS and loan organizations. THEY made the money, were going down in the "housing bubble" when their co-conspirators bundled all of the worthless loans into funds that were rated AAA by the rating agencies and sold them to the government and us commoners to put into our IRAs etc.

Let's keep the focus of the blame where it belongs, on the banks/mortgage loan organizations and their robo-signers who do not even read the loan application...........I read they are still at their greedy craft even after the latest regulations that appear to lack no teeth (or even gums) to watch over these slimeballs.

Parroting Obama, I see. The wealthy should pay their fair share. Well, what exactly is this “fair share”? When one considers that the top 5% of wage earners in this country already pay more income taxes than the remaining 95% combined, what exactly are you proposing?

Let's not lose sight of the unfortunate fact that the number of people in this country that pays zero income tax has risen to 51%. Now we have a country where half of the people pay for the other half, and you continue to want ever more.

This "study" just proves that whites are 18% to 20% smarter and work 18% to 20% harder then blacks and hispanics.

Exactly. Many of these minorities should have never qualified for a mortgage to being with, so of course it looks as if they lost ground when the reality check comes. And they can blame their bleeding heart liberal politicians for their predicament and for putting the rest of us in trouble as well. In the end we are all circling the drain together.

Can someone please explain to me why there are no manufacturing jobs if the majority is white and they do all the work? Why did those jobs end up in Mexico, China, and India where those people are brown or colored. Why is it also that China is making Major investments into Africa right now. Hiring Africans to build a railroad that spans the continent from the Atlantic across to the Eastern side so they can easily get Iron ore from the west side of Africa.

It is not illegals fault our nation is failing it is not the average white persons fault. Or the blacks. It is not the hispanics fault. It is all of our fault. We do not educate our kids in finance. We have been entering an era where everything is now global for over 40 years. And our whole nation just wanted cheaper, easier, and faster stuff.

We have allowed China to basically buy us. And to become the major world superpower just by our own self interests. We spoil our children into thinking Johnny should not have to work as hard as I did. I want better for my kids.

Its those people who are ruining us not me. Is not an attitude any American can afford anymore. The only way The USA can compete is to take it back into our own measly little hands and change it with our own pocket books. Whats left of them. Stop buying made in china stuff. Buy used if need be from fellow Americans only.

I have merely brought this stupid piece of "journalistic" crap to it's inevitable conclusion. This so called "study" is racist and inflammatory in itself. It is divisive. It only serves the purposes of our political prostitutes and the corrupted media. It promotes American on American hatred.

If our political prostitutes can keep us divided and distracted with this kind of hate mongering, they will not be examined. This will keep them in office and no one will vote for a third party. These Democrats and Republicans (our public servants) are ALL laughing at us (WE THE PEOPLE)!

@Dante - if your brother only qualified for a sub prime loan, why didn't he pass? I was first qualified for a home loan when I was 19, but the monthly payment was more than I was comfortable with, so I didn't utilize all I was qualified for. Instead, I bought a much smaller house, with a smaller payment that I knew my husband I could afford if one of us lost our job. And when my husband lost his job, we kept our house. The only person to blame for sub prime mortgages are the people who willingly signed a loan agreement they did not understand and could not afford.
