J.J.-2726240: This persons name sounds foreign. He is probably somewhat new to the American way and is not yet accomplished as a lying, thieving soul. Well, now he will have to pay for that amateurishness. Some of the wall street folks might even shed a tear for him.

Actually this happens quite a bit. 20/20 had a special several months ago about this very thing profiling several stores in the Eastern and Mid-Southern US. They had an actress with a winning ticket go to several stores and asked the clerk to check the numbers for her. This result happened more than not and always it's somebody asking the clerk to check the numbers instead of checking yourself.. In one case a clerk tells her she won initially and then says he made a mistake and offers to throw it away for her. When the cameras and John Quiniones' come in the store they find the clerk digging in the trash for the winning ticket he threw away for her. The sad part is that it mainly seemed to be immigrants from the Middle and Far East. You say it's racist to show the name, but as 20/20 showed it seems to be a certain groups of immigrants who have come from certain areas. At least I don't remember seeing any Korean or Chilean shop owners in the sting. Mostly Pakistani, East Indian, Turkish, Arabic. Immigrants from that area of the Middle/Far East. That's not my personal opinion, just what seemed to be shown on 20/20. That doesn't mean all immigrants are bad people. Far from it. It just shows that everybody has thier bad apples no matter where you come from. The real moral of this story is to check your own numbers and not let somebody who when presented with the gateway to large amount cash might decide to lie.

I remember that 20/20 story. I was interesting but it was not only middle easterners in my recollection. Alaways sign you ticket and request it back after they check it. Better yet check it yourself.

Put your name and address on it before it is handed over to be checked, problem solved.

Im pretty sure you cant cash in $90,000 at a gas station...so, no need to ever give them the ticket.

In California, if the ticket is worth more than $500, it must be cashed through the Sacramento office.

Thats why you check it online first to check before taking it to the store clerk. If no internet, then check the newspaper or the news.

People who play the lottery on a regular basis are more likely to have lower than average intelligence. You hear of lotto winners doing inane things all the time.

ALWAYS sign EVERY ticket, in ink. Then if you hand it to someone else, insist on it back and check the signature. Save them all, including losers - if you ever get lucky and hit a biggie, the losers can offset the winnings for federal taxes.

Most contests have a rule that if you are an employee or family member of an employee, then you can't participate in the contest. Why doesn't the lottery follow such sensible policies? Anyone working for a store which sells lottery tickets or family members of said employees should not be allowed to participate/win the lottery.

Angela, do you realize how many people you would prevent from playing the lottery? I think the rule should be that they can't buy/redeem a ticket in their place of employment, and/or must provide proof of purchase with a receipt as well as the ticket. (or is that what you meant? If so, never mind.) After all, the more who play, the larger the jackpot!

Seems we see this in the news a few times every year. Most are probably very small winners like $10 to $100 so they stay under the lottery radar. Like cash transactions in a bank. Keep it under the amount that requires a paper work trail. Seems to me within the past year I read about some state doing a lottery sting. (For some reason I am thinking New Jersey) It was amazing the amount of this activity they uncovered. The quotes of, "Buyer Be Ware" and "Due Diligence" seem to apply here.

Yes, some states conduct stings. But it's not a high priority. New York, if I recall, actively declines to do sting operations, citing the need to preserve confidence in the lottery system, the assumption being that if operators like this guy are uncovered, people will play the lottery less. I'm curious how this guy came under suspicion, how many people he ripped off in the past, and how the authorities traced down the owner of the ticket.

It is an Indian name... so he's not from a "-stan"... unless you are using stan in place of "land" which is what stan means.

It is pretty amazing that all the indian store owners in my area are named Patel must translate to smith or jones in there language.

Most Wanted only means that they are the criminals who haven't been caught yet, not that those are the only people who commit serious crimes. Use your head. The white, US born citizen criminals are probably already in prison and therefore no longer "wanted." Want a list of major criminals who were born and raised in the US? Go to your local library (if you know where it is) and look in the serial killers section. We've had plenty of sickos of our own.

You are dumb enough to think that the DEA Most Wanted is accurate data to support your claim? Most of them have never actually been in the US. On the FBI's list they have several terrorists that have never even visited the US.

You want real data? Look at the US Prisons statistics (you know, people who committed actual crimes IN THE US) and you will note that the vast majority of them are good ol' white boys born in the good ol' US of A.

I wasn't counting Canada. 85% speak English, and 30% of them speak it as a second language. That leaves barely over half the country native English speakers, which is what I meant by "English speaking": countries where English is the most common language. As for more Chinese speaking English than Chinese, Wikipedia has a page for English speaking countries, and China is very far down the list, with 10,000,000 out of 1,300,000,000 speaking English and all of them speaking English as a second language. Being bilingual doesn't make them an English speaking country, just more open-minded than most Americans.

As for the rest of the countries, there are 22 on the list that have 90% or more English speakers, and out of those, four show 90% or more of the English speakers speak it as a second language (one actually shows 100% of their English speakers to speak English as a second language). The majority of the rest are territories of the three I named in the first place.

If you want to count all the countries where at least half the population are native speakers, there are 17 more. They include Australia and are also mostly all territories of the UK or US. I don't have time to look up which are territories of whom, but I recognize a lot of the names as island territories.

And I loved the comment about writing the bible in English.

Coincidentally, the US is also in the bottom 17, with 82% of the population being native English speakers. And that's 6-year-old information.

Wales and Scotland are not on the list. Probably because they are actually part of the UK. South Africa has 8% native English speakers.

If he was a natural born US citizen, where do you propose to deport him to? People of Indian ancestry are born here too. I'm sure there are plenty of Native Americans who would like to deport most of the US population back to our ancestral countries. You make a good point but I think the original posters comment was meant to reflect that the people running the prisons are happy if he gets sent there because they then get to overcharge us for his stay and make some money. And before any wingnut makes a comment, yes, I realize that the federal and state prisons are just as good, if not better, at wasting our money too.

Your right, it has nothing to do with race, I saw that documentary and they took a winning ticket to something like 50 stores and had the person hand it over, ask it to be checked, and then walk away looking for an item. When they returned over 50% of the people tested, said the ticket was not a winner!!! Every race, color, creed, religion and country was fairly represented in this cast of thieves.

I am a well educated professional that grew up with East Indians (those from the subcontinent of India and other places in the world with large Indian populations). I admire most Indians for their intellect and work ethic; they are now the model minority.

However, I do not conduct business with them, and I would never stay in a motel or hotel that is owned or operated by Indians. They are just too cheap and will cut every corner they can even if such cuts are detrimental to their customers' health, etc.

Their communities are very exclusive; they do not like to intermarry and interact with the majority caucasian population and most other ethnic minorities.

Some stereotypes are just true, although of course there are exceptions. You may have a sense of ethics in dealing with customers, clients, patients, etc., but most Indians that own businesses, do not.

And, they are particularly bad at covering their body language. In other words, they are not good at faking it.

As I've said, Indians should be very proud of the inroads they have made in academia, medicine, and politics/government.
