What they should do is not politically possible. They should do more stimulus, which means more spending in areas proven to create growth, and tax cuts that do the same. The tax cuts for the wealthy do not provide much in terms of the economy, however, a comprimise may be to extend them for a couple of years.
It is really a shame the right has been able to demogog the stimulus like they have. Somehow, they have convinced the public that the ARRA was the be all end all cure for the economy. It was not. It did, however, stimulate the economy.
The position on more stimulus is like a doctor not continuing a treatment even though it was working, because the initial does did not completely cure the patient.
Sorry Mr. President. The old gimmick of “believe what I say, not what I do” no longer works. Your actions speak much louder than anything you have said, so I will believe it when I see it.
According to recent polls, about 60% of Americans no longer trusts you or your policies to get us out of this mess. It would seem that the other 40% would follow you off a cliff if you asked them to as it is evident that they are blind followers mesmerized by someone who has perfected the talent of speaking from a teleprompter.
Until you learn to act like a real leader and stop playing politics and belittling anyone who disagrees with you, you will never earn the respect and trust of most Americans.
The position on the stimulus is like a doctor throwing drug after drug at the patient and telling him: "You might think it's not working but I'M THE DOCTOR!"
"Take two of.........let's see.....try these and call me in the fall"
Injecting stimulus into the economy will only work for a short time and never solve the real problem. Sure you will see near immediate effects, but that stimulus runs out eventually...Its like keeping a dying fire going with gasoline...you dump enough gasoline onto a fire and it will take off and burn quite a while, that is, until you run out of gasoline...by then the fire is back to where it was before, maybe even worse than before the gas!...it's the same way with any stimulus package...They will take off like a bonfire when injected, but die down once the supply has run out.
We need long term ideas here and Im not so sure this administration has the capacity to come up with any. All I am seeing is us becoming addicted to the "free" handouts.
After hearing this speech more and more this President is making me sick. I am so fedup with the blame game and I like to know who is in control of the house and senate? The Democrats are! so why is this administration having a problem passing things when they control everything? I guess putting the blame onto someone makes then feel so strong. Well I find OBAMA a big child who has trouble taking responsibilty for his own actions. More and more crap keeps coming out of his mouth and I have to bring out the shovel. If any of you idiots out there in Obama LAND are so stupid for falling for his line of BS then you really are morons. This president needs to wake up and realize that spending your way out of this mess will not help. I also like to point at that Obama wants to tax people who make $250,000 and up. Well those tax brackets are small businesses that create jobs. Something does not add up here. Obama is so incompetent and non business smart. We need someone who is smart in business to run this country and Obama is not it!!!!.
In January 2009 Obama's economic advisors predicted that unemployment would peak at 8% with the stimulus package. The unemployment rate has been above 9% since May 2009. I think it is safe to conclude that the stimulus package did not achieve its stated goal of creating long-term economic growth. This is not surprising to people who understand Austrian economic theory. Government spending and low interest rates only create a temporary boom followed by an inevitable bust. The Obama administration is following flawed Keynesian economic theory that is going to turn this recession into a depression. The government is doing the same thing that it did in the 1930s and the result is going to be the same. The more the government tries to interfere with the economy, the worse off it is going to be because the government is inefficient and wasteful. The best solution is to let the free market rebalance itself and purge all of inefficiency and bad investment from the economy. The sooner the free market is allowed liquidate all of the bad decisions of the past decade, the sooner the REAL recovery can begin.
Um.....to Gubment....
Please step away from the chalkboard and see if you can find ONE analysis from an economist who has studied the administrations policies that DOES NOT SHOW saved jobs, created jobs and resulted in a higher GDP.
Good luck.
To Clint.....
It is true that stimulus runs out, but that is not a reason to do more when the economy is still struggling.
Again, I will use the treatment analogy.
Just as in medicine that is working, it will not always work in one dose, and you will not have to take it forever once you recover.
Republicants
I'm the one who addressed your....ahem.... "analogy".
With a screenname like Republicants, I don't expect much rational debate.
Republicants- Your idea of continually injecting a dose of "Stimulus" into our econony will not work for the following reasons:
Cut spending at the Federal Level! By 2020 ALL Taxes collected will go towards paying for Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.......are we ignorant or just stupid as Americans to think this system of having the Government take care of us is actually going to work?
What part of the STIMULUS IS WORKING translates to the GOP stance of it's not working???
How does that happen. Out of their mouths and all of the results from the Stimulus suddenly disappear???
Tax cuts DO NOT STIMULATE the economy and those cuts made up how many billion or trillion of the current deficit??? If those tax cuts SOLELY to the already wealthy are continued, we will only make the deficits worse and the rich get richer.
Governmentforthepeople:
1. Where are you getting the $2 billion a week that's being sent to Afghanistan? Hmm?
2. Tax cuts for the wealthy have never helped the average American. Trickle-down economics is a failed theory. Wake up.
3. For why we're broke, you may want to read this article at the Washington Post:
Obama said the struggling U.S. economy can't afford to spend $700 billion to keep lower tax rates in place for the nation's highest earners despite a call by House Minority Leader John Boehner and other GOP leaders to do just that.
Let's be clear, a tax cut is not spending. A tax cut makes it more difficult for our Congress to spend money. Unfortunately, it doesn't make it impossible. Since they will spend what they don't have, why are we concerned with tax cuts? Do you really think these morons--Obama, Pelosi and Reid--are going to balance the budget?
@ NiteOwlett - the stimulus is NOT WORKING, that is the entire point. The govt. has wasted billions and we have little to nothing good to show for it. Certainly no long-term, product producing jobs, which is the one thing we have needed from the beginning.
Obama said the struggling U.S. economy can't afford to spend $700 billion to keep lower tax rates in place for the nation's highest earners despite a call by House Minority Leader John Boehner and other GOP leaders to do just that.
This statement is retarded. The govt. is not going to spend anything by keeping lower tax rates. In contrast, the govt. needs to take on some fiscal responsibility, like Boehner said. (But I'm sure the free spending Democrat's heads would explode if they didn't get to spend all that tax payer money and the successive generations money as well!) This speech only galvanized us more. We can't continue to spend what we don't have.
The $860 billion "stimulus" bill did not stimulate jack sh**! Now this bozo wants to add another $50 billion. That is just political and every other kind ot STUPID!!!
The STIMULUS is and has worked. Our economy is growing, albeit slowly, our jobs are not bleeding profusely, albeit growing slowly.
Plenty of Governors have bragged about the stimulus funds in their states, and their results.
Don't be lazy, don't believe me, GOOGLE it. The government site is the best, but hey, WE THE PEOPLE, are the government and WE THE PEOPLE is who we have to trust.
RealAmericansFirst- See below my friend:
Where the hell were all you fiscal conservatives when bush and the republican congress were pissing money away on wars they couldnt win and train museums in mississippi.
Now your solution is stop spending money on your own country that will create jobs for Americans. We saw how many jobs ten years of wars created for Americans, ya
Boner is a drunk puppet to the corporate elite. Who could give a rats ass about you or me.
No spending on my country is not a solution .
My question is, since when is a family that has an income of $250,000 rich? A family with that income usually has kids, cars and a house with a mortgage. You tax the hell out of those people and they have to make choices that many americans already made with the market tumbled, except this tumble will be imposed upon you by the state. Want house to continue to foreclose, tax those folks that work hard for their money. Punish them with supporting the rest of the nations and the governments willingness to spend everyone's money but only to collect those folks above the 200k line. Way to go america. I am proud to be an american, I don't agree with our president but I want him to do well, I want him to fix things but for now I hang my head in shame that we impose such an unbalanced systems debt on those that aren't rich when they have mouths to feed just as everyone else.
You meant to say democants right. They have had a free hand and can't do a damn thing right!
The democrrats are trying to solve the problems that George Bush and the republicans left. The republicans that are mouthing off now are the same bunch that created the problems. You people are idiots, and you are not the only vet.
No thanks we have been there and did that already. The money they spent went to temporary construction jobs and that's about it. The jobs are running out and people are once again at the unemployment lines. Kill that insurance bill and use that money for other things that will keep families from losing their jobs and their homes. No more bail-outs for industry. Let them bail-out the American People this time.
One very dumb administration and congress. If you both of them in a good bag and threw them in the river you would only lose one good bag.
Iam woman- You may want to look at the Obama Administration Strategies listed in my posting below (#3.2).......looks like you are one American that is buying into their agenda. In fact, you almost used one of the phrases exactly as I listed in my comment below. Interesting........
"Keep in mind wealthy Americans are just about the only folks who saw their incomes rise when Republicans were in charge."
I don't know about the rest of you but I saw a big pay increase while Bush was POTUS and as a law enforcement officer (before retiring) I was far from "wealthy."
Thankfully ( I guess you could say it that way) I am medically/disabled retired so my retirement income is tax free and won't be effected by what Obama does. At least not yet and not directly.
My question is, since when is a family that has an income of $250,000 rich? A family with that income usually has kids, cars and a house with a mortgage.
Families without that income usually have kids, mortgages or rent payments, and if they do not have cars, they are in need of them. They are, however, too often, trying to survive on under $15,000 per year, so don't waste too terribly much breathe whining about a little old $250,000 income. If that's not enough, and plenty more than enough for you, then you need a better sense of direction with your finances.
Uh.....people on the LEFT have excoriated Boy Blunder Barack over the Stinkulus Plan, too. INSTEAD of that pathetic plan, which created virtually zero NEW jobs, why didn't BBB promulgate small business assistance then, instead of NOW, when the Stinkulus Scam has ballooned our & our coming generation's debt???
BBB is a fool. His party affiliation should be renamed Hypocrat.
Not once in our history has spending more ever stimulated the economy.
It doesn’t matter what you do. The GOP ruined this country and it isn’t ever coming back. It was Bush who started two wars yet failed to raise taxes to pay for them the fool cut taxes turning a record Federal surplus into a record deficit; it was Bush who created the conditions that have lead to the biggest economic crises since the great depression. The GOP will only hasten the decline and fall and you think it’s bad now you haven’t seen anything yet.
Jocojr,
You are incorrect. Government spending is the classical economic aid during a recession. The people and business can't spend, so the government must.
Several posters on here today say: "quit out sourcing jobs", "bring back the clothing industry", and other such hog wash. How do you propose to do it? Just look at what happened to the apparel industry in the 60s and 70s. Companies moved to Central America because of lower wages and lax regulation. What hjappened then? Companies like Nike and Hanes found they could move to countries like Vietnam and pay even less to their employees. They're making more profit plus they don't worry about labor laws or environmental laws. Anyone who thinks the jobs sent overseas are coming back have their heads in the sand.
I have one nasty fact for every one: the world is not coming up to America's standard of living. America will be going down to theirs.
=====================================
Witchking,
This mess we're in wasn't caused by Obama, nor was it caused by bush (BTW___I loath bush). It was caused by seveeral things. First, the fiscal policies of BOTH parties since WW2. BOTH parties have their fair share of blame. Second, the American people, who have spentthe exact same way our politicans have. Also the American people, through their apathy, have allowed our elections and government to become corrupt.
Very good post, imwhitewolf.
I have one nasty fact for every one: the world is not coming up to America's standard of living. America will be going down to theirs.
You are right. To watch those be dragged into reality kicking and screaming like a bunch of two-year-olds headed for booster shots is nearly funny. It's just too pathetic to laugh, though.
They need to do exactly this.
Cut Government spending by 50%.
Cut Taxes by 25%.
Go through all the current laws and anything not vital get rid of it. Make it so that anybody reading the laws can understand. Get rid of all the unnecessary departments and restructure the rest.
Imwhitewolf,
Absolutely wrong in your premise. While it is true the knee jerk reaction is for the government to step in and it has over many decades, it never has worked, not once. Regarding outsourcing, one thing you have failed to mention is how unions have destroyed our ability to compete globally. My dad retired from Dupont in textiles and while some of what you said is true, our government hasn't exactly made it easy for us to compete by penalizing them with high taxes and warped regulations.
We need to stop digging holes and not elect Republicans to ANY office.
They come in a distant second to Democratic economic accomplishment see: http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/p/eco...
and lay claim to being economic wizards.
They explode the National Debt. see: http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/p/nat...
and lay claim to being fiscally responsible.
They CRUSH job creation see: http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/p/job...
and claim to understand how to control the business cycle.
They have been in charge when 9 of the last 10 recession have occurred see: http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/p/his...
and claim to be experts on the economy
Democrats have the record, the facts and history on our side. Republicans have fear, fubar and falsehood on theirs. When Republicans win, working people lose. And that's how they like it.

Stop slave labor products. Produce our own goods. Promote factory infrastructure. Negotiate world standard minimum wage and equitable trade policy with all trading partners. if they do not agree, no access to American and trade partners markets. without access to foreign markets, countries that produce products using below world minumin wage standard will have to create their own economies on the wadges they pay their own people. they will have three choices...
raise their minimum wadge
produce products that are cheap enough to be purchased using below standard wadges.
join the rest of the world.
if all nations are on line, government & civil stability will be the the only way that a country can promote itself to attract investment money. the more stability in government and the populace, the safer the investment. government will then promote health, education, infrastructure and innovation as a means of economic survival and growth. the ability to maintain peace is a commodity to multity national investors with billions of dollors at risk.
If we do not correct the wages discrepancies between the United States and emerging economies, perpair a place next to the river for your mud hut. If you don’t believe that this is the true problem then consider the rate of growth that has been experienced by china, India, Brazil, etc.. their jobs use to be ours, and it is not them that are buying the products they are making because they are not paid enough to buy them.
Forget about the quick fixes you hear coming from Washington, and tell them to slam the freekin door shut before the whole world catches a cold!!!
if we can revitalize the american economy in this fashion, we can then pay down foreign debt. Also, promote energy diversification and new recyclable industry and resource conservation as resource are going to be scarce as more of the world populace become consumers. this is vital as well.
Boehner: Cut federal taxes and reduce federal spending.
What's wrong with that? Obama sounds desperate and defensive. Can you blame him? His party is going to get wiped out in November. They'll have to put a name on that hurricane.
Get Obama voted out as soon as we can and than do something about his stupid health care plan.
Both parties are parties of corporations and the rich. If you really think there's much difference read the article below:
"In an earlier outburst—in June, Simpson was caught on tape berating an independent journalist— he revealed the ruthless logic behind the ruling class drive for cuts: Workers, whom Simpson dubbed “the lesser people,” live too long. When Social Security was created “they never dreamed that the life expectancy would go from 57 years of age to 78 or 75 or whatever,” Simpson said. “Who would dream that? No one. They just died.”"
US ruling class prepares attack on Social Security
8 September 2010
Prominent figures in the US ruling elite have recently made a series of statements that forewarn of massive cuts in social spending, up to and including Social Security, the bedrock federal insurance entitlement for elderly and disabled workers.
These comments reveal that, whatever the precise outcome of the midterm elections on November 7, they will set the stage for a bipartisan assault, in the name of “fiscal responsibility,” on what remains of the social reforms of the last century.
The knives are already being sharpened for a long-awaited attack on Social Security. In a rude and provocative e-mail to the president of the Older Women’s League dated August 23, former Republican Senator Alan Simpson—appointed by President Obama as co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform—revealed his deep hatred of both Social Security and the working people who depend upon it.
Social Security “has reached a point now where it’s like a milk cow with 310 million tits! [sic],” Simpson said. He blasted its recipients—retirees, those maimed and sickened by their work, and dependent survivors of dead workers—who, he said “milk it to the last degree.”
In an earlier outburst—in June, Simpson was caught on tape berating an independent journalist— he revealed the ruthless logic behind the ruling class drive for cuts: Workers, whom Simpson dubbed “the lesser people,” live too long. When Social Security was created “they never dreamed that the life expectancy would go from 57 years of age to 78 or 75 or whatever,” Simpson said. “Who would dream that? No one. They just died.”
Simpson’s commission, established earlier this year by an Obama executive order to rein in budget deficits, is reportedly considering several measures, including raising the retirement age, perhaps to as high as 70, and cutting benefits as well as cost-of-living increases. It is expected to announce its recommendations in December—not accidentally, one month after the November elections.
There is unanimity in the ruling class in favor of the attack on Social Security. Co-chairing the Fiscal Responsibility commission is Erskine Bowles, formerly a White House chief of staff to Bill Clinton, and another long-time advocate of Social Security “reform.” And signaling the trade union bureaucracy’s active collaboration, Andy Stern, former president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), also sits on the commission.
“I agree with many Commissioners who have said that all entitlement programs should be on the table,” Stern has declared. “We should include as part of our agenda ideas for strengthening the private parts of the retirement security system, reviewing both the adequacy and the solvency of the Social Security system, and the possibility of universal add-on retirement accounts.”
Deepening the fiscal attack on the working class in the US, Europe and internationally was also the primary topic for discussion at the Ambrosetti Forum held last week on the shores of Italy’s elite Lake Como. Attended by political figures such as Spain’s José María Aznar, Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Henry Kissinger from the US and Israeli President Shimon Peres, as well as numerous European Union functionaries, top bankers, businessmen and academicians, the forum provides a sounding board for policies that few politicians would dare identify themselves with in public.
In one session, Hans-Werner Sinn of the University of Munich declared that Americans will “just have to go down in their living standards after years in which their living standards soared in part based on foreign credit which is no longer there.” And Jacob Frenkel, chairman of JP Morgan Chase International “urged the United States to rein in entitlements as part of a ‘political deal’ that recognizes reality,” according to an Associated Press account of the conference. JP Morgan has received tens of billions in loans, debt buy-downs, and direct cash infusions from the federal government.
The attack on entitlements and social spending is the second phase in a broad offensive against the living conditions of the entire working class, following quickly on the heels of the unprecedented attack on jobs and wages spearheaded by the Obama administration’s forced reorganization of the auto industry.
Workers are being conditioned to accept what is referred to as “the new normal” typified by low wages and benefits and the total absence of any form of social protection. Or, in the blunter words of Fiat head Sergio Marchionne, US workers must accept a “culture of poverty,” abandoning what he contemptuously referred to as a “culture of entitlement.”
The class character of the calls for “sacrifice” and “responsibility” is increasingly naked. Even as Washington prepares for drastic cuts to Social Security and all manner of social spending, Congress appears likely to extend or make permanent the Bush-era tax cuts for the extremely wealthy, which have cost the federal government trillions of dollars.
Peter Orszag, until July 30 Obama’s director of the Office of Management and the Budget, in a Tuesday column for the New York Times called for a two-year extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for the richest income earners. In the very same article, Orszag called for Social Security “reform,” a 5 percent cut to discretionary social spending, a 6 percent value added sales tax, and higher taxes on “middle-class and lower-class families,” which he called “troubling” but “unavoidable.”
The sharp move toward austerity and the attack being prepared on Social Security stand as a testament to the bankruptcy of American democracy. The upcoming election and the official debate that surrounds it—including Obama’s latest in a series of purely symbolic jobs proposals—only aim to disorient the population.
The basic thrust of US policy has already been determined. The ruling class is determined to shift the full burden of the financial and economic crisis onto the working class. In this context, the widely anticipated gains for Republicans in the election are already being presented as evidence that the demand for attacks on social spending originate in the population itself.
This is a lie. In fact, the objective interests of the great majority of the population—suffering through the worst social crisis in generations—demand a massive jobs program, free universal health care, secure retirement, improved quality and access to education and culture, and other social rights necessary for life in modern mass society.
The trajectory set by the ruling financial aristocracy is in precisely the opposite direction. The attack on living conditions will continue and deepen until the working class mobilizes its independent political strength to bring it to a halt.
Tom Eley
Gosh the Rebuplicans decided early on the only way to defeat this president was to vote "No" because if he wins they lose and the American people be damed you followed their BS for how many years? And now you are still following their BS - Wake up they are wealthy you are not they have corpoarations behind them you do not they have oil for them you do not - they have a cushy retirement program for them you do not - OK vote for them they don't give a dam about you only there own egos and their freebies -your choice
Look, Senate Republicans are on our payroll up there in Congress and they're hired to get on with the process. After 20 months of filibustering, refusing to debate and voting no, no, no, no, no on issue after issue, they're finally happy to step out of the fridge and make the following exception: Extending tax cuts to the top 2% income bracket in our country. What they want will cost us $700 billion over a decade, and $34 billion for this year alone.
Understand that the Small Business Bill they have been blocking (3 times now) costs $30 Billion and is fully paid for. It will help make loans more available to small business owners and cut taxes so that they can hire workers, pay rent and payroll to keep their operations going. Republicans are still blocking an up-down vote on this bill.
They are blocking job creation.
They are blocking job creation on many levels and must believe we cannot see it. Let go of the illusion that the Fib n Block party cares about ordinary people. Notice how they inflict a lot of pain and suffering on others to sustain an illusion of leadership.
A millionaire will continue to receives $100,000 per year via this tax cut. Don't know about you, but it would take our family a month of Sundays to net that kind of money. The connection between this tax cut and a history of bubble and bust economies is very clear. Greenspan, former Fed Chairman for President Bush, now calls this practice "disastrous".
How will cutting spending help the economy?
Government deficits are funded by issuing debt. Issuing government debt competes with the markets for capital. Less capital for business means less money available for expansion, development of goods and services, which in turn strengthens the economy and creates jobs. Econ. 101.
Econ 101 also talks about supply and demand. The money supply is not being dolled out but the demand is high. Tax cuts have historically never worked with less than a 1:1 ratio where unemployment benefits have a 1:1.38 effect. Lend money, make products in this country. Tax imports, government lending to small business (less than 150 employees/less than $15mm sales), tax exemption on profits to those same small business and treat all personal taxable income at the same rate. Make it pay to invest in business, not off shore investments.
It won't help the economy. But the republicans want the tax cut that George Bush gave to the very rich to become permanent. We need out of the bad trade agreements that Bush put us in. Now the republicas want more free trade agreements, so more American jobs will be lost. A vote for a republican or tea party member is voting against American workers and for the rich bankers, wall street, oil companies and insurance companies.
Wow really, why don't you look at the mess that big Gov has caused in Britain. New concept employ more people in the gov and win yourself more votes in the next election, and next etc. I mean really how many gov buildings have you been to that half a dozen or more "employees" are just sitting on their BUMs not doing anything, and this is generating true revenue how? I mean really your a gov employee, you pay taxes which go were, wow new concept to pay you, so again how did this generate real revenue comming into the government coffers how?
whgwv: The problem is not expansion; businesses are sitting on money. There is no demand, because the middle class is being strangled by republican policies. We need a tax cut for the middle class; the rich are doing fine.
Iam woman: Don't forget about Nafta, which was, I believe from Clinton. Who wasn't really a liberal. And while I'm on that topic, Obama isn't really a liberal either. You can't give away billions in business to the health insurance company/fraudsters and still be a liberal.
Apparently some folks have a false idea about the who the wealthy are. Lets see who contributed more this past election. Goldman Sachs contributed more for Obama's campaign as well as BP Oil than for McCain's campaign. The list is quite long. Do your research before posting talking points that have no merit.
In 1938 just as FDR had nealy ended Hoover's Great Depression, he knuckled under to pressure from the Know-Nothings on the other side of the aisle and the recovery flat-lined and fell backwards, extending the Depression for another two years.
Today's Know Nothings are advocating the same idiotic nonsense they were pushing back in 1938.
@Jocojr, way to go for the FUD. All politicians have "blood on their hands" when it comes to political donations
You can slice them all different ways to mislead. For example, Obama may have been the largest single recipient in 2008, but the majority of BP's money went to Republicans.
Stop the crap and look at policy.
I think I've finally figured out whats wrong with liberal democrats...
Paint chips, drug abuse, and of late... the kool-aid. Where do you folks get those rose-colored glasses by the way? Wal-mart?
Start giving the American people money like they hand out freely billions to foreign countries every year. Invest in your own country for a change.
As for government listening to the people or care what the people think. Did Odumbo listen to the people over the Health Care Plan? Hell No!
Give the people on SS, SSDI and SSI 1200 to 1800 to live on. Everything goes up in price except these people's checks, yet our government takes billions every year and hand over to foreign countries.
Chunky monkey, HELL YES President Obama listened to the people on health care. I am just one. Health Care was one of the main problems in his platform when he ran for office. Everyone with lousy health care or no health care voted for him. We put him in office! People being turned AWAY because of preexisting conditions were dying quickly like the repukelicans wanted! And now we have a chance to live. So you are only speaking for yourself or people who don't need health care.
And why, simply because you can? What do you have against people having proper health care? What do you have against people who don't need to worry about preexisting conditions if they get sick? Get a life and try to walk a mile in our shoes. Ohhh... You can't, you would DIE QUICKLY!
It's not just ... pre-existing conditions. Its the whole "take-it- or-live-it" attitude of the present health business. They, in many ways dictate who is hired; even in private companies and small businesses.
I personally know several people who were not hired due to advanced age - seems the business model of the Health care provider had determined that a worker over 60 was too much of a risk for the premiums they were getting from a particular 10 person business. If the 60 year old was hired, every ones premiums, co-pays would increase - substantially (40%)! so, even though this individual was the best man for the job... the insurance provider got in the final word.
That was not an isolated case either.
And that is EXACTLY why not only do/did we need healthcare reform, we truly did need the "public option". I for the life of me still can't believe we can't buy into medicare regardless of age. Sign me up for that government run healthcare!!!
The shameless insurance companies are the ones responsible for the runaway costs and the runaway costs are the largest driver of our unsustainable debt path...hmmm I'm detecting a pattern here...
There are so many good alternatives out there that would reverse the direction of the economy, the debt, the deficit, you name it...but the politics of doing what's right for the 280million people NOT making a million dollars or more(I may have lowballed that number) is NEVER going to fly since it takes the uber-wealthy to fund a national campaign platform...is it any wonder why the agenda that caters to the rich is consistently promoted and merely nibbled around the edge whenever the howling for "reform" gets too loud?
The government should continue with another stimulus but, it should be in the form of work programs with a government hired and managed workforce - no more free unemployment compensation:
1. Tell Boehner and his friends to go to hell!
2. Set up government run work programs to improve or develop:
. roads and structures
. medicare fraud investigation and funds recovery
. alternative forms of energy
3. When Boehner and his friends object without an alternative plan - tell them to go to hell.
Isn't that exactly how FDR turned a recession into a decade-long depression? I'm surprised you're not pushing for increased tariffs as well.
David Meyer, the following is the Obama Administration Strategy. Can you honestly tell me this is working:
OBAMA ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS, PLEASE SEE MEMO BELOW:
Instructions for all Obama Administration officials. In case you missed the memo's over the past year, please see the following phrases you are to use when defending our administration's policies. You will see the strategy we are trying to implement following each phrase in parenthesis:
FINALLY, one final reminder. When all else fails, BLAME BUSH. Thank you.
*Not a real Memo, but with the same arguement being used over and over and over again by different officials within this administration, I would not be surprised if they looked similar to this one.
You people need to understand less government is the answer not more!!!!!!!!!!! what is the matter with you? People need to start thinking for themselves and not follow what parties are saying!
Isn't that exactly how FDR turned a recession into a decade-long depression?
Isn't that a total myth and a bunch of nonsense?
Yeah, it is.
"We saved or created 3.5 million jobs" (Strategy: Make unsubstantiated claims. We may not be able to back up the numbers with accurate data, but they can't prove us wrong either.)
That data is backed by reputable economists and the CBO if I am not mistaken. But, keep making unsubstantiated claims as the hilarious disconnect of the GOP with voters continues to drag them down in the polls. They were up by 10 for just a very brief moment, but that's over now. With tax cuts for the rich (opposed by 69% of the American Public) and racism front and center as the only two visible planks in their party platform, the GOP has nothing to offer voters.
NOTHING.
You people need to understand less government is the answer not more!!!!!!!!!!!
We tried "less government." We got Katrina.
A failed ideology is not a strategy, or a policy. It's just tired and worn out.
Less government means less Democracy. We've already seen what happens when we let spoiled rich BRATS run our country. They do nothing but stroke themselves and disgust the rest of us.
max....
You have a most interesting viewpoint, accuracy notwithstanding.
Check out Paul Ryan's plan.
I don't believe that all good comes from government. If that were the case, the Soviet Union would not only be intact, but dominant.
Our country was founded on individual liberty. The Bill of Rights limited government's ability to affect individual liberty. A fact we seem to have forgoten.
The greater the government, the less liberty we have.
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office’s report (http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/117xx/doc11706/08-24-ARRA.pdf) on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act: last quarter, the stimulus boosted the GDP by between 1.7 percent and 4.5 percent, adding at least $200 billion in economic activity. It increased employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million jobs. If the report itself is a bit confusing, look at a summary from Reuters at http://www.reuters.com/assets/print?aid=USTRE67N55X20100824
1.4 to 3.3 million jobs is NOT “few if any jobs”.
All members of congress use the CBO, both conservative and liberal. I would trust the CBO much more than any report from the biased/partisan Cato Institute or Heritage Foundation.
I don't believe that all good comes from government. If that were the case, the Soviet Union would not only be intact, but dominant.
The Soviet Union was not a democracy. We are. Provided we are INFORMED, we have the power to make INFORMED decisions about issues that affect us. Nice try but that is not an analogy, it's a bucket of fail.
We are one of the most poorly-informed Democracies on the planet these days. And that is why a huge segment of Americans continue to vote against their own best interests, egged into doing so by demagoguery and bigotry which blinds them to the facts and the true issues of the day.

how can you argue with this statement after looking at most of these posts. It is one thing to say a person lacks an education, but what is there to be said of the lack of common sense?
i find most of these comment to be noise that takes up allot of space and time to read through. i have resorted to designing sound bite messages that are no more than a sentence or two, and posting copiously throughout the article. i hope if it is seen often enough, it will get clogged in some of these poor individuals minds, like a tune one cant stop humming all day after hearing it on the morning radio show. everyone!!!.......start humming.........
slam the freaking door on outsourcing jobs to slave labor economies!!!!
The ol' FDR extended the recession gambit... ain't it wonderful to re-write history to reflect current mythology.
Next thing we'll hear from the republicans is that the GI bill, ( paid for education, home loans, etc) had nothing to do with the rise of the United States while the rest of the allies suffered after WWII. That when it was extended after Korea, vietnam and today - its not a form of public assistance?
One thing we do not want is millions of unemployed youngmen, who know how to use weapons... running around without hope.
More stimulus for small business and the middle class. Most small businesses make less than $250,000/year, so will not be affected by extending the Bush tax cuts. The repubs are all about the rich and not the middle class. During the Bush administration, all breaks were given to the rich. That era was such a joke, including him.
Exactly! 98% of the tax breaks went to the top 4% in this country. Business never leads, it will only follow where money can be made. They don't invest without the PROMISE of vast returns, they don't have the guts or know-how to lead.
Rick,
I'm not sure business wants to lead. They want to earn money. Now, if the same could be said about our politicians. Wait, it can. Most of our politicians know nothing about leadership (including the chosen one, who authored more books than he did legislation as a senateor). They do know how to increase their personal wealth while in office, or shortly thereafter. Go figure....
Funny how many of you don't know the Bush cuts were for all tax brackets. All of them are going to expire.
How do Liberals walk around all day with their heads jammed so far up their collective backsides and not bump into things all day.
Yo, Rick: "98% of the tax breaks went to the top 4% in this country" DUH, maybe because 98% of ALL taxes paid in this country of ours are paid by the top 4% of the people. It is only the LIBERAL that wants to "level the playing field" with other peoples money.
And Janet: You do realize that the Small Business Administration labels you a small business until your company employs more than 500 employees or earns in excess of $7 million a year. Pretty FAR CRY from the $250,000 small business crushing policy of your saviour-in-chief.
I'm sorry! but where do you say the repubs are all about the rich and not middle class. Proud to say I am a republican and I am NOT anywhere near rich... Republicans are not ALL rich people, I would say most RICH people are liberals at least that is what I have encountered. But this is just one female republican persons opinion...
Michael Leckrone is correct. Bush and Boehner gave the tax breaks to the rich and the corporations during the Bush 8 years and what happened? The coroprations moved more and more jobs overseas so who did the tax breaks help -- only the rich and the corporatiions -- not we "little people".
Everyone who paid taxes got a tax cut. It is impossible to reduce a zero tax liability. And those tax cuts he says he is giving - he isn't. He is simply going to extend yet another Bush policy. And you all thought Bush was the devil. Obama has adopted many of Bush's strategies (Patriot Act, war ramp up, honoring Bush timeline for Iraq, hoping to extend tax cuts, etc.)
obama needs to get out of the way, quit spending money we don't have and keep the Bush tax cuts in place. By the way, notice how this so called news service always loads the questions and especially the answers.
Roy,
What part of the BUSH TAX CUTS that were NOT PAID FOR, do you not understand????
Fine, let's quit spending money we don't have. That means all the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have to come home. Now. So get out of the way, GOP.
Interesting liberal point, it's all about the troops. The wars account for roughly 20% or the budget. I wonder where the other 80% (approximately) goes. ENTITLEMENTS. Perhaps, some of those should be reduced....
We spend more on illegals in this country than the cost of wars............sheesh. I wish people would do some research instead of listening to talking heads who spout rhetoric.
The first stimulus did create jobs.. Obviously corporate leaders are hoping by delaying hiring and keeping the economy week they will turn the people to more friendly politicians for their benefit..Nothing but corporate greed splitting this country even more..These same companies have made more money and stockpiled more cash then ever before..If you follow the stock market at all you can see this..Nothing is good enough for them until they get everything their way..I can't believe so many little sheep actually believe corporate leaders are looking out for what's best for us..Get real people everyday we see another company going after their employees to cut wages and cost but fill their pockets..Corporate greed and the people supporting these ideas will make the good old USA into a third world country ..Do I agree with everything from the present administration.. Absolutely not..But the alternative of following what the Republicans are suggesting only helps the rich and of course companies here and abroad..We don't have free trade that is our real problem..Why don't the politictians on both sides deal with that..
We don't have free trade that is our real problem..Why don't the politictians on both sides deal with that..
i agree!
jack, you will notice that this opinion is rare amongst all the post in this article. 99% of all other solutions given have been tried and failed, which probably indicates that trade is the root of all our economic problems...slam the freaking door now!!!!!
Very easy....Stop spending what we dont have.
Where was your credit card and back card when it came to the rush to war that created all this debt in the first place! Probably the same place your kids were, safe, tucked away where they wouldn't be harmed while someone else had to send their kids off to YOUR wars and pay YOUR bills for you.
Sorry rick I have family in both wars. My cousin is sitting on top of a mountain in gods no where afghan land. My bills are paid for along with my taxes by me and an education.
Right on David. Pretty simple concept, but it takes a bit of self control and a dash of smarts to pull that off - sadly something few of us seem to have these days. Where's guys like Dave Ramsey to vote in 2010? Moderate in thought, doesn't preach damnation or seem to just piss people off like many Repubs and doesn't advocating spending what he doesn't have like many Dems. If congress had more of those level headed people controlling our purse strings, balanced budgets would be the norm in both up and down years. As it should be. We'd save 10% for rainy day fund and give 10% to other countries for aid and humanitarian efforts to boot. 10% of our GDP? Imagine the difference that would make on a global scale. Sadly, I'll be shouted down as a clown for even typing such thoughts but oh well...
I have to say. Far left want us poor. They want us to be broke so they can turn the US into a controlled wellfare state. Thats when they will have compete control.
I hate the far left and far right. We need a middle. And that seems to be gone. Only the Independents can change america....
David,
That makes too much sense now doesn't it. Honestly, it has become more about redistribution of wealth than anything else.
Cut taxes to Middle and Poor People, and invest in infastructure. Don't Listen to these
right wing nuts who only favor the rich.
Andrew,
When was the last time a poor person hired anyone?
you are wrong .....its all about trade and your caught in smoke screen political bull.
Why isn't extending the tax cut for the non wealthy one of the choices? This is what Obama wants to do and it is the right thing. The wealthy have had the Bush era tax cuts all these years and we are in this mess. How can extending that help us now? That's just plain stupid!
Everyone who paid taxes enjoyed tax cuts under Bush. Obama and his followers are lyingif they are spouting otherwise.
GoUSA,
The Bush tax cuts MAINLY benefitted the top 1%. Obama is extending the cuts to those making >$200k.
What don't you understand about those tax cuts not being paid for or not helping to stimulate the economy?
removing tax cuts on the so-called wealthy will create more short-term unemployment. rich people own companies and hire individuals & if you remove tax cuts, they'll either increase the price of their products / services OR cut positions to keep profitable. our government seems to think businesses (or these so-called rich people) will just pay the additional tax and there's no impact to the rest of the job market ---- if you remove $50K of a tax break to a firm, they'll likely just remove a $50K position to offset the tax (it's not personal -- just business). Remember, business owners didn't create their firms to see how many jobs they can create.
you are wrong .....its all about trade and your caught in smoke screen political bull.
Nite Owlet:
You are wrong. Every single person who pays taxes got a tax cut. Sure, a person who makes a million dollars will realize a larger cut when the same percentage is applied to her as it is to the guy who only makes $50,000. That's simple math. X% of a lot is more than X% of a little.
Regarding your comment about my not understanding that the tax cuts weren't paid for: There is nothing in my comment about that. I was simply pointing out that those who tout that the cuts were ONLY for the wealthy are lying.
There is no way to approach a solution to the future and solving our financial crisis without understanding how we got here. It's not just a simple matter of blaming the Bush administration - even though it's well deserved. The point is not to repeat the same mistakes! What John "bonehead" Boehner is proposing are more of the same old policies and mantras the Republicans are famous for - giving tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals and corporations. This is all done with the supposed result to help business growth and create jobs. However, time and time again - like the 8 years of Bush policy and during the era of their demi-god Reagan, this didn't happen. So what happened to the money and the jobs? The fat cats and corporations kept the money and sent the jobs overseas. Even Reagan had to raise tax rates for revenue and guess what? Today's rates for the wealthiest are lower now then during Reagan's time! What Boehner is proposing now is just a rehash of the same ol' same ol' puppet show.
The Republicant proposal is just a charade and is another tactic in their long range plans - hatched when President Obama was elected, to defeat anything and everything proposed by the President and the Democrats. All of us in the middle class have suffered at the hands of these Republicant tyrants who want to give away the store to big business. Think Wall Street, BP, Exxon Mobil when you think of the Republicants. Do you really think these large companies, Wall Street, and corporations that don't pay their fair share of taxes have the middle class best interests in mind? Ask yourself, when was the last time a Republicant did anything for the average American?
John Boehner is a media whore out for himself and his proposal is one of the biggest bonehead ideas to come along in the last two years. Once bitten, twice shy or rather, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
And you can bet if they get the chance they'll screw the middle class all over again.
Murphy you are quite right. All of the comments I've seen here continue to either spout bad stats or blame Obama for everything that is wrong with our economy today.
John Boehner is but one example of the Republican compass to trample all over anything the Obama administration proposes.
We had 8 years of the Republicans squirrelling all of the tax breaks and profits for the big earners of the American population. It's time America wakes up and learns more about how we got here, and what can be done to make a change.
The fat cats and corporations kept the money and sent the jobs overseas
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!
any other discussion is secondary.
I think some import taxs are in order we can use the revenue to fund the extended unemployment benifits that will be needed for a long time to come. All those outsourcing companies have raked in enough profits while they use slave labor and saved a bundle on ruining other developing countries environment
excellent observation dave, your opinion is rare because it is correct!!!! everything else has been tried and failed.......this is the solution.
post it everywhere!!!! chant it in the streets until it irritates everyone as much as all of these post (except this one) are irritaingly nothing but nonsense.
If we are going to roll back spending as the Republicans suggest, why not go back to 2000 when Bush started increasing spending without taxing to balance the budget. The Republicans got us into this mess and now they are complaining because the recovery is not fast enough. Who knows where we would be without the stimulus when Obama got in office we were apparently heading towards a Depression. The Republicans need to support the President in spending on infrastructure to create work. But we also need to generate income through taxes- not tax cuts for the fat cats that can certainly pay their share.
Facts seem to fly past certain people! If infrastructure spending was important, why didn't Obama spend some of the over $800 billion on it more then giving to BIG BANKS???
Why didn't he push for it in the past 19 months??
We are all being led by people who support their party rather then this Country! No Democrat in Congress supported any legislation to curb our Housing fiascoes, while in complete control of Bush's last two years in office!
beyond:
The $800B TARP fund was created by Bush legislation, not all of it sent to banks, but the bulk has been repaid. Major banks going under would have helped, WHOM?
Not back on the planet, huh nite!~
That Was ALL OBAMA $800B! ALL HIS!!! READ
He IN FACT gave to backs to Shore them up! Check that Economic Term out, Nite!
Without Business being able to borrowing when they are losing money, they cant grow or produce; therefore, layoffs and no hires!
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!

There are two kinds of people in this worl; Those who look at the wealthy with admiration and those who look at the wealthy with envy and hatred. Which one are you?
RSD both parties look to the rich! GE and UNIONs (dont think Unions are rich!?)paid for Obama!
Tax cuts to the already wealthy has NOT helped our economy, nor will it if it continues. It was NOT PAID for and is a big part of our national debt.
Why are you all continuing with the insanity of thinking otherwise. Didn't even Alan Greenspan say this very same thing!!
One ounce of proof Nite!~ PAID FOR??? that is money the government never had; therefore, that paid nothing!
No he didn't and who cares Alan Greenspan watched all this happen and said nothing!
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!

All of this talk, is just that. Talk. Everyone needs to wake up and smell the coffee. First off, abolish the friggin IRS. They are nothing more than theives. Second, quit all of this garbage about tax cuts, and rates. Establish a flat 8% tax accross the board. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE pays their share. End of problem.
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!
any other discussion is secondary.
We certainly don't need to extend the tax cuts for the very rich. Did you know that the Republican tax cuts affect only a tiny slice of the American Taxpayers? The top 1/10 of !% get the half of the write offs. Do you really think that that 1/10 of 1% will really pull the economy along with them? If you do... I have several nice bridges for sale! The middle class needs a break and extending tax cuts for the very, very rich is not the way to help.
Where's the impeach obama option? That would be the best thing that could happen to revive the economy.
Shamwow, please cease swinging on Obama's knuts. this is about a wave of rich people against us poor people. Obama is just one man. What Boner's offering is garbage. I recall Obama talking about the repubs wanting to keep the same ol program going that pratically destroyed this country. this president is standing up to the rich. Many of us are just to shallow minded to see that. We are so caught up in criticizing the president that the repubs could steal the entire country as long as they say "Obama's from Africa, he's a Muslim, he associates with terrorist" etc. Get a clue ya'll. the man hasn't been in the office two years and lots would rather follow people who have been there all along and done nothing to avert the recession. When a man comes along who does do SOMETHING they try to convince people he's the anti-christ.
If I didn't vote for Obama before, you can bet I will hurry to vote for him this time.
Keith are you serious?? Both parties swing for different Rich people!
I don't mind a debate about President Obama who has had the courage to tackle some huge problems at great political expense. But when you here the impeach word, or socialist or Marxist this all code for we hate that this brilliant Black man is the most powerful man in the world and if he is successful then there will be an end to the White dominated good-o boy system. So to all the liberals, progressives and independents do not be fooled by sophisticated racism. He is a a brilliant President blessed with a weak party that hates winning. Republicans circled the wagons when it came to the worst President and biggest war criminal in recent history (Bush/Cheney) but when we get a good President then liberal politicians show how yellow belly they are. Voters don't be fooled tell all your neighbors and friends to get out and vote Democratic in this November the work is not done.
Truth did you read what our founders intended?? They never wanted A Single Person to be ALL POWERFUL!! Thats what they ran from in England!
Beyonddisgust -
That's why Dennis Kucinich et al drafted the 13 articles of impeachment for Bush. You can thank Bush for giving government the power to read your e-mails and look at your bank account. Isn't that all TOO POWERFUL?
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!

BEYONDDISGUST
You are correct. both parties swing towards the the rich differently. That's to be expected. We should all know by now what politics and being a politician entails. the difference between the Dems and the repubs, is that the Dems will share the spoils with the "little" guy, whereas the repubs seem only to be interested in sharing with eachother. the rich support, protect and coverup for the rich. At least the Dems try to help more people.
Republicans act as if 2000 to 2008 never happened. Anyone who agrees with them is as delusional as they are. Republicans want to return to the feudal system of 14th century England, with a nobility that lives off the hard work of the working class and the poor, while they themselves do nothing. What corporate raiders do to companies, buy them, make a profit, and throw them away, they now want to do to people.
the economy did well up untill late 2006- early 2007 even with 9-11. wounder what happend in 2006 to change that?
yes i know Bush was in charge but during his term 2000-2006 unemployment was low and eveyone i know had a job and money. in 2007 eveything went down the tubes. so can any one tell me what big event happend around 2007 that changed everything?
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!

You bring up the one thing our founders just didn't consider. What happens if you get a criminally stupid and power hungry person elected to govern. Obama will do a lot of damage in 4 years. Maybe the Brits have the right Idea. A no confidence vote in parliament leads to new elections.
"What happens if you get a criminally stupid and power hungry person elected to govern?"
Ever hear of George Bush?
Chris like facts?? While Bush was in office we had the highest Prosperity of any nation (except Solomons Isreal) at any time in history!
Both are wrong, because our republic still has 3 distinct branches. Problem is that they are all being run by distinct parties!
You have an odd notion of facts. I recall the constant complaint of people being forced to train their replacements in India and then being fired. Ever call customer support for a computer? The prosperity you're talking about is corporate prosperity, not individual.
As far as the 3 distinct branches go, for 2000 to 2008, they all marched in lock-step. Witness what's left of our supreme court.
Besides, it's not a republic, it's a banana republic, thanks to the banana republicans.
WHile thats what really led to our economic downfall, Chris!?
Exactly. Republicans, when they were in power, systematically moved a majority of manufacturing jobs out of America, giving them tax breaks so they could import their goods as though they were still in the country. That way they could hire cheap labor for a couple of dollars an hour and no benefits rather than a decent wage like they'd have to in this country. The savings to the corporation is pure profit.
You may not know this, but Levi's jeans, the most iconic symbol of America, are made in China; Nabisco fig newtons are made in Mexico; and Hershey just fired 400 workers so they could move their Peppermint Patty factory to Mexico. Where should their former workers work now? Or are they now hobos and bums, as John Boehner calls them.
Chris wont deny that happened, but none of that supports the economic mess that we are in today!
I know that they left our country completly (LEVI) in 1994! Guess who was president then!
Chris they all are whores to somebody!
Nabisco left after the signing of NAFTA, Guess who then??
These tax breaks doubled the Earned INcome Tax Credit (GOT KIDS!!!???) and reduced the Net Tax for EVERYBODY! ALso the last two years of Bush's office gave all workers approx $200 per year in federal check!
BASELESS ACCUSATIONS are just that, baseless accusations.
If most of you had A CLUE to a criminal fact we are missing about President Obama, I would love to hear it.
A duly elected President gets shafted by misinformation and ennuendo. Why????
Nite when has your Cool Aid drinking self been right about anything?
we are competing against slave labor.......slam the freaking door now!!!!

Can't answer that one Mr. Palmer, have never voted a criminally stupid person in office. If you are referring to Obama, if healthcare is stupid or if bringing many home from a war is criminal or somehow reflects "power hunger" then count me among those who are law breakers, if yo will.

The most obvious answer is lower tax rates (or at least no increase) and spending cuts, but MSNBC doesn't even see this as a valid option.
