I for one believe these companies create viruses for the people's computers in order to sell the fix to them. These companies are CROOKS!
Back in the mid 80's people never have virus problems, so someone decided to create one and then offered a fix for it, thus creating Anti-Virus programs for $$$$$.
Everyone that owns a computer should be getting these programs for FREE.
McAfee (notice Fee in the name), as well as Norton sucks. I've tried them both, and for some reason once I installed them, I seem to get viruses on a daily basis and fixes for them on a daily basis as well. hmmmm?
After deleteing them and doing a clean install of my OS, I left them alone and never had a problem with viruses since.
Yes, because back in the 80's everyone had a computer. Take that into consideration on top of the fact that you probably do a lot more on your computer today, then you would have in the 80's (financial data, shopping, facebook). All of this info is what the virus makers want. Spreading of viruses back then would have been harder as well without everyone computer having an internet connection. Most of the time, if your computer is infected, you have more than one virus on your computer. At this point, buying software will probably not fix your issue, these programs are made to prevent things from coming in, not cleaning up the mess after you clicked on a link to download free coupons.
Chunky-Monkey - You are an idiot. It used to be the 15 year old hackers that wrote all the viruses for fun, but these days viruses are written by professionals in Eastern European countries (with lax internet security laws) trying to steal your financial info.
You can also use Wine or VirtualBox to run Windows programs. And it uses 1/3 the resources of Windows (on my computer, anyway). Plus 2GB free cloud storage.
My wife has a dual boot system with Windows 7.0 and Ubuntu 9.10, and she hates the Windows. I wish I would have put it on another system, because the restrictive license prevents me from installing it on another computer.
The best part about Ubuntu is that you can sit back and laugh at the Windows world, with their viruses and spyware (and the Mac World, too, believe it or not).
While you guys (Chunky-Monkey and Kentucky Dave) may be rocket scientists and quantum physicists… it’s very clear to me that neither of you know anything about computer or data security and the “big players” within this business space. Fortunately for you there are security professionals like me out here that do understand what this means who can try to help you understand it.
OK.. so let me put this as simple as I can… currently the anti-virus you may or may not have on your computer works at the Operating System and applications level, meaning that it checks for anomalies in the code that attempt to do what a certain piece of code should not be doing or was not designed to do… are you with me… OK. What Intel could possibly do is create AV that can work at the machine or chip level increasing its effectiveness, speed of detection and all other sorts of things that “might/could” make malware extinct as we know it today… maybe.
But there are other things going on here. I think this was a good purchase for Intel because it creates a separate cash flow for them, McAfee is one of the largest players in the Info/DataSec world, and when you stand them next to Symantec everybody else is fighting for the vapors, and there are other very large players out there.
Now guys, as for all of that “free stuff”… it’s OK if all you need is “OK”, but if you really want to protect your investment, privacy and everything else that you do on your computer, $50. is not going to kill you, and if it is then maybe you should reconsider your online computing habits.
And people, please quit with the “Mac is this…” and “Ubuntu…”… any of these systems will fail you just as quickly as a Microsoft system if you do not take care of it… and Microsoft systems can be “hardened” to defend and protect themselves better than most of you know.
Well boys and girls… that’s my lesson for today, tomorrow we‘ll discuss the “Joys of NOT Using Facebook”.
How bout if they just TEST the OS, software/applications more BEFORE releasing to retailers? I agree that it would be better to 'scan' b4 full boot. Remember bios scan?
Wow the most useless security software on the market and they get billions for it? Only in America and we will all pay by buying their chips.Time to consider AMD
Wow, Intel overpaid on junk. McAfee is alot worse than malware. Just a system resource hogger and slows the computer down. It always comes on laptops when I buy. So I quickly do a complete clean os install to remove all that junk.
Surprisingly out of all places, Microsoft has been offering free antivirus software for a while and its pretty good. Microsoft security essentials.
And people, please quit with the “Mac is this…” and “Ubuntu…”… any of these systems will fail you just as quickly as a Microsoft system if you do not take care of it…
This may be true but if my OS is going to crash anyway, I feel much better not having paid $300 for it.
Chunky-Monkey - You are an idiot. It used to be the 15 year old hackers that wrote all the viruses for fun, but these days viruses are written by professionals in Eastern European countries (with lax internet security laws) trying to steal your financial info.
Well, apparently I am smarter than most. I refuse to put my personal info on the net as well as pay my bills or do my taxes over the net. Why would anyone want to take these kinds of risks by putting all their personal info on the internet for others to steal?
Microsucks need to build a more stable OS before selling it to the consumer. I can see the day that MS ends up being sued for putting out a faulty OS/product and then people end up having their computers hacked into.
Microsuck needs to put a warning label on all their products, This OS is not 100% full-proof, and hackers can easily break into your computers by using this product, and steal all your personal information.
Intel should spend a fraction of that amount and just do what Mcafee does and save billions and billions of dollars. Just wasting there money for a grossly over priced company.
Exactly. I have never paid for an Anti-virus. I use Avira along with a Comodo firewall. Never had a problem.
Most people who get viruses anyway really just don't know how to properly use a computer. That's why Apple has a little cult following, they make their computers slightly more 'idiot proof' than Microsoft, so the majority of people who screw up their Windows machines because they THINK they know what they're doing (it IS a PERSONAL computer) won't screw up their Macs. And that's all Apple needs to charge $1000+ for basically the same laptop/desktop.
I'm sure this will pass the SEC without problems, since Intel seems to own them too. No smackdown from the SEC for illegal practices against AMD, sure go ahead and make a bigger, super-mega corporation, we need the taxes, and the Phillipines need more work for 5 cents an hour. Way to go for government oversight!
If Intel can't do what Mcafee does at a fraction of the cost its time to terminate there software and services group. Spend millions not billions on developing the technology. A good part of Mcafee technology is free today in the technology world under hundreds of different brands.
There is endpoint AV free to the consumer, but it isn't licensed to be used by another corporation for profit. Also, Intel isn't buying McAfee for their Windows AV software, they are buying McAfee for their core technology, similar to how they licensed BIOS protection in the 90s.
Also, for anyone who thinks the AV companies make viruses, why are there no whistle blowers? Such an operation would be impossible to hide for long. Anyone who accuses IT security vendors of being bad guys or developing problems on purpose has never spent any time in IT security and has no clue what they are talking about.

Anyone who accuses IT security vendors of being bad guys or developing problems on purpose has never spent any time in IT security and has no clue what they are talking about.
Or as is often said: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"
There are also large groups in Asia who are constantly trying to find a way around security. I saw recently that there as many as thousands of new viruses daily.
I deleted McAfee from my laptop because I was getting too many virus created failures, blue screen errors etc. I switched to AVG and have not had any problems since.
Ignorance is bliss. If you are using the free AVG, you MUST install and run Malwarebytes AntiMalware www.malwarebytes.org/ and/or SuperAntiSpyware www.superantispyware.com. Yes, both of those sound rogueish, but they are legit. AVG free makes McAfee's detection rate look superb.
There is NO rootkit detection in the free AVG and that is what I've been finding on my customers' computers. They have been running various AVs, like Norton, McAfee, AVG.
Also, for anyone who thinks the AV companies make viruses, why are there no whistle blowers?
Easy who says they have to work for the company they can be paid easily without being part of it. After all they do use people to try and defeat their security dont they? Wake up. Its a short step from a to b
Whenever there is a big corporate takeover the winners are; Executives of both companies (whomever is ousted gets a nice golden parachute), Investment bankers and lawyers. The losers are; Employees of both companies (expect layoffs), customers (the new company has to pay its debt so they always raise prices and lower customer service).
SaaS end point Proxy filtering is the future of Anti Virus/Malware market. Its a saturated space and very profitable. My guess INTEL knows this but raising prices isnt an option, to many companies in this space.
I think INTEL is a flawed company. Much like HP they are not spending enough to innovate and depend on buying companies. Basically their Wall Street puppets, Management spends all their time worrying about stock price..
You can guarantee that there will be layoffs and that the executives will get millions of $ to quit while the average worker will be lucky to get a two week severance.
There used to be a formula that banks used to figure layoffs when companies were bought. They have to pay for all the golden parachutes, lawyers and CPA's. Major shareholders could careless about employees as long as they get theirs.
it's not computers. It's cell phones. Easy to break into them wirelessly and they dont have any kind of protection perse except a password which most dont bother to setup.
intel is working on getting the atom processor into cell phones (Remember that powerful Snapdragon at 1 ghz?. Now your talking 1.6 with the atom just for starts then you have the dual cores out.) but you cant really run antivirus or security software on a phone, it might bog down way too much if not done right. intel could get control of the security by building it into the chip itself and bypass phone manufacturers. Realize people can now scan their checks and make deposits to the bank with their cell phone, a totally unprotected device. Not sure if that is how it would work or what is going on, but it wouldnt surprise me.
Once Intel incorporates McCrapee into their processors will consumers still be able to install and run a competitors (Scumantec, Vipre, Kapersky, CA, etc...) product?
Of course, if McCrapee is part of the hardware; it won't be as easy to update with new definitions to deal with new types of malware. So maybe they are just going to sell the product as a new way to make a buck and put the squeeze on their competition by claiming to be more secure because they own it.
As a shareholder of Intel I believe this purchase is way off the mark. A share repurchase to the tune of 2.5 billion shares over five years would have better served shareholders and the company. But what would any of us know? Intel has been one of the best growth stories for the last ten years, but you wouldn't know it by the share price today. Wall St. has manipulated Intel's share price to the point that everyone is apathetic to owning it. McAfee will be the blunder of the decade for Intel and unfortunately its shareholders.
I own shares too. mainly for the dividend payout. now they are talking low earning first year, flat earnings second year, and no growht until year 3. Wall street has from several people trying to boost buys of stock by pushing dividends being better than or as good as treasuries. Intel specifically was one they have pushed for dividend. So far today I have not heard any report that talks about this effecting dividend. Sure would like to know.
As far as the mcafee software, i have always used sym norton , mainly because the only thing that would catch virus issues on friends computer that got corrupted using macfee was norton. This is a total surprise. Apple haters like my self have been big on intel, and anyone that knows intel , knows mcafee is not the antivirus of choice.
Having been a computer technician since the screens were green I find it amazing and confusing that anyone would pay anything for security software when Microsoft gives away a perfectly adequate software solution for FREE, especially a piece of crap like McAfee or Norton for that matter. Apparently it doesn't take much to part the sheep from their money. I do not believe that McAfee or any other vendor actually releases viruses to sell their products. They don't need to, their software itself causes more problems than any virus ever did. I've made more money removing their software from people's computers and repairing the damage it did than I ever did removing viruses. I say you go Intel, buy that crap and spread it far and wide. There's a recession on and I need the money.
Gotta agree with you. I don't even run an antivirus. I've got a few free virus removal tools that work just fine. Sometimes you might need to do a little internet research to find out what program has the best luck with a particular virus. Some Rkill, Hijack This or Hitman Pro and life's good again.
Yes sir. We are in agreement here, too! I do my best to convince my clients to STOP buying and implementing these resource hogs. These programs take forever to load, dramatically slowing the boot process and occupy an ever increasing amount of computer resource to "run". When I setup new machines, and pre-loads are the worst, I remove all of them in the first few steps. They're a nuisance.
Thank you for your comment and wisdom. As someone who has been using a PC since 1981 I am in agreement with your assessment of the worthlessness of Symantec-Norton and McAfee. All I can add is the surmise that someone at Intel needs a tax write-off.
You have a very narrow minded view of what McAfee has for products. I have been doing information security for over 15 years now and I agree that their desktop protection used to be crap. They have improved dramatically over the last couple of years though. They also bought Secure Computing in the last couple of years that made them the owner of the Sidewinder firewall line. The choice for many fortune 500 companies and the US government. I think the premium Intel paid is too high, but McAfee is an excellent choice to buy.
so what you mean to say wlockridge is that you actually believe in programs like microsoft security essentials. sounds like you are still looking at green screens today because that program is one of the worst out there, it cant even adequately remove a trojan virus properly because it is the FREE solution for cheap people out there who always want to get by with cheap crap, sorry but nothing good in this world is for free now days and me being a computer tech and reformatting many a computer for people because of viruses i can tell you that mcafee really is the smartest most secure solution out there, it has the largest virus database in the world so it can catch just about any virus on the web. once again if you always choose the cheap solution in life like free virus protection and the lowest ram in your computer for your budget then yes with a program like mcafee always working to protect your pc in the background you will have some speed and stability problems. oh and another great way to keep the viruses away is to stop looking at porn and use firefox instead of IE!!
Interesting story. However, it appears as though msnbc.com is in need of better proofreaders. (Para. 8, 5th word) Maybe msnbc.com should hire me instead of their current proofreader/editor. :-)
When the FTC, DOJ, and others takes Microsoft's upper left management and board, then puts the lowest of the gene pool in prison, while asking the others when they will have a "clean and workable" copy of Winders to download to ALL machines regardless of age say back to at least Win2000, that is the biggest corporate user of Exploder 6, then that will fix the virus problem.
McAfee, Norton, etc - thanks for playing and see Johnny on your way out to get your consolation prize.
Anything base off of *nix, which is Apple, all Linux, Sun Solaris [read web servers], etc do not have virus problems. I do concede that applications can have problems [ browsers, pdf, etc] but the OS is secure.
Final words, UBUNTU is the MS of Linux. [does not work that well] Go get Mepis [http://www.mepis.org] and be free.
McAfee SUCKS and always will. AT&T used it and probably still does and it does not work at all. These companies have made their money from contracts not consumers picking them. Norton 360 with the firewall turned off and ZoneAlarm Pro has kept me secure for over 6 years. As for the idiot who said they create viruses, Wow !!! Get back to your "Medical Marijuana" and your sorry Mac computers. These companies work constantly to keep up and have no time for that stuff.
While I may agree on many levels with comments in the discussion, I do think that this purchase is far more related to the Cloud based offerings supporting back up, security, archiving, etc. Intel is buying market share and expanding their offerings to compete with Microsoft, HP, Oracle, and IBM - among others. This is probably going to give them a jump over Symantec and some of the other vendors that are out there. Since McAfee acquired MX Logix last year, my guess is this is the stimulus for the purchase.
Let's hope Intel removes a lot of the nagware features from McAfee. I dumped them several years ago because I just could not get that program to just shut up and let me get on with my work. It was so "in my face" that I couldn't stand it. Trend Micro does a much better job of that and of protection IMHO.
The only reason MACs are secure is the user base is to small for the pirates to care about. However, someone did write a virus for MAC's not to long ago so that may be changing. As has been pointed out here, the upcoming issue will be cell phones and their vulnerability to hacking attacks. Tablets, not so much, as they are really just small laptops, basically computers. Any device that has access to the Internet is exposed to getting virus/spyware/keyloggers, and could even be used in bot networks. That is where the real money is, it's in establishing bot networks of computers that can be used for spamming or denial of service attacks. And to all of you who think you have never been attacked, how can you be sure your computer isn't in a bot network? Virus software isn't about destroying files anymore, it's about taking control of your computer to get bank passwords, credit card passwords, stealing your identity and then using your computer to perpetuate that software to other computers.
All I want to know is who knew about this merger in advance and bought McAfee stock and made a bundle since MS paid a premium 40% over valued and drove the Mc Afee stock price way up while shorting their own MS stock (win baby win). I am sure every top MS/McAfee executive their families, friends and favorite politicians just made a fortune,
$29.93. McAfee shares surged 58 percent after the deal was announced Thursday to hit $47.14 in morning trading. Intel shares slipped 59 cents, or 3 percent, to $19. "White collar crime is where it's at"
I agree I'm a compurtor idiot .and tried all softwares .keept having problems after problems.but the repairmens loved it. they made money on it. never telling what was the problem.and some had me chang to others. It would be good for awhile then back to the same crap.made me want to give up on the compurtor. then learned of microwsofts free one and had them install it on my pc and elimated all the others . and guess what no more promblems ART

Intel is pretty much trying to become a monopoly with their hands in the cookie jar of every part of the information systems world.
Remember how AT&T did it in the past?!?
Eset used to be good. That was until they got greedy and started to charge yearly subscriptions for their antivirus software. Thanks but no thanks.
Big mistake here. Companies should remain focused on their "core competencies". McAffee is not the magic bullet product they lead you to believe.
They're a nuisance.
wlockridge,
Thank you for your comment and wisdom.
McAfee is horrible software. I'm very surprised Intel would buy that company. I wouldn't install their software if someone gave it to me.
[does not work that well]
Go get Mepis [http://www.mepis.org] and be free.
