I was just thinking the same thing.

I have seen one article on here that said that Hispanics were the ones being "especially hard hit" by unemployment.

The I saw one that said blacks were being "especially hard it" by unemployment.

And now it's teens.

Can't we just agree that everyone is being 'especially hard hit" and save ourselves the next 40 articles about who is being especially hard hit?

On second thought - maybe this is an attempt by journalists to stay employed before they are next on the "especially hard it" list. LOL

Hispanics hard hit? Well they can thank their own kind for coming across the border and stealing their jobs. Teens usually work in fast food as their first job. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why they cant fiind jobs. Just go into any fast food restraunt. Who do you see working behind the counter. We have e-verify in the city I live in and they are all white kids that work in the fast food restraunts with a few Hispanics sprinkled in. Hispanics are American citizens so I dont care but the illegals are not.

We cant wait for the Government to help out seeing how in DC they are having alot of issues again this year with the DC Summer Job program for teens. I feel this job program is very discrimitory since the majority of folks living in DC are black and this type of program should exist everywhere not just in the worst inner cities.

Time for those teens to go into the military. How about hiring a new generation of border security soldiers, who are still relatively close to home. Make them 2 year enlistments, and then they can decide to enlist for overseas jobs. Kinda like Jr College for the Military.

They are not counted in the un-employment % , unless they have had a full time job for the quarters needed for un-employment insurance. No one knows what the real unemployment figure is, many think it could be close to 20% .

I'm a white female, but I'm not afraid to do any job any man or woman can do, don't care whether they are black, white or purple with spots. I've worked on blueberry farms, cranberry farms, drove a picker machine and a truck, have been a cashier several times, was a short order cook and pizza maker, put myself through college while cleaning toilets to become a paralegal when I was over 33, so that is just a bunch of BS spouted out by people who like I said, won't lower themselves to do that job they think only immigrants will do. Fact is a lot of immigrants have really good jobs right now. They seem to be the only ones that do have jobs where I live and I live in a heavily populated hispanic area, we have dominicans, puerto ricans and a helluva lot of mexicans here. They seem to have all the jobs in hospitality, hotels, food service, landscaping, restaurants, even medical assisting now. And some of these jobs pay really well. I know landscapers in some companies here start out at over $12 an hour. I have some mexican neighbors that work in hospitals, and why do you think that is? Because employers want bilingual workers now, so they can 'cater' to hispanic populations. Its good business, and brings in people that will have no reluctance to be a cash source for their companies.Most of the retail stores here are always full of hispanics spending money, so someone must be keeping this economy standing on one thin leg. Isn't any of us unemployed, that is for sure.

As for teenagers having a difficult time finding work, they can join the rest of us unemployed that are having a terrible time finding anyone to hire us. The competition is horrible here, and its worse for anyone over 40. I interviewed for a cashier position 3 weeks ago. The GM that interviewed me said they received over 600 applicants, for one position. Needless to say I didn't get hired. I've had 5 actual interviews in over a year, I can't even count anymore the number of resumes I've sent or actual positions I've applied to in person, but I keep a list which is now several sheets of paper long not even counting the ones I save online that I have applied for through the several headhunting agencies I'm signed with.

This job situation needs to get better now. Enough with the stimulus payments that are only a minor temporary fix. my unemployment ends this week, and I'm ready to stand on a street corner with a billboard over me for anyone to hire me. I'll even pick fly crap out of black pepper at this point.

Everyone else got that a lot of the jobs, Private sector anyways, that were created at the beginning of this summer were only summer jobs. Think about what is going to happen when fall hits, and the pools, driving movie theaters, water and theme parks, and shaved ice, ice cream stores close or decrease the number of available jobs. Think stocks have gone down lately? Just wait.

That was the only reason it was announced there was "job creation". There never was any job creation, that is nothing but a pompous lie as no one waved a magic wand and created any jobs. The jobs that were hiring this spring were either for the census that has been around forever and had nothing to do with our current administration, or seasonal positions. Garden centers, public pools, ice cream stands, summer camps. That is all coming to a close soon so there will be even more without jobs. The census as far as I know has been over since June or July.

this is bs. i am 19 and have had all sorts of jobs from working in a daycare, to manual hard labor and call centers. i am hispanic. so i am well aware of the "diffuculties" to get a job. i was unemployed for three months, but within those three months i was not putting enough effort into finding a job. i know and have seen that its true a lot of people will NOT do most jobs hispanics will do. i am sorry to be the bearer of the new but since i started actually looking and trying to find a job i have been hit non stop with job offers. i currently have a job that pays over $14 and keep getting job offers. so what i do is refer friends to the jobs and some have been fortunate enough to get employed as well. so at least in my area this is false, if teens or anyone would actually put forth enough effort they will find a job. just show you are the best candidate for the position

Thank you for saying it j32991. I worked on a farm this summer as a hand, and I think it is sad that Hispanics are the only ones who still see those kinds of jobs as an opportunity. I am not Hispanic, but I am willing to any job because I need the money for college. I can not believe that there are people out there that are picky about what they are willing to do. I am only 18, and I feel like people need to be willing to lower their standards to find jobs.

j32991, are you a legal resident or "undocumented"? If you are legal how many of the job offers need to fill their affirmative action quotas? If you are illegal how much do the employers save on healthcare and other benefits?

The "best candidate" no longer gets the position, it is handed to whoever helps meet a certain percentage of minorities or the cheapest, surely you are aware of this by age 19.

What do you mean "very soon" - it's already happening. I'm a perfect example. At 46 I work along side young people ranging in age from 20 - 22 years old; some are a little older. I have two college degrees and 25 years work experience, and my job today requires, at best, a GED - ridiculous. Most days it feels surreal to me - like I'm in a very bad dream that I can't wake up from. But what are you going to do? These days, you have to take what you can get. I'm sorry if I'm taking away a job from a young person, but I've got a family of four to support - and I'm it. I don't earn much above what I collected in unemployment, but it's a full time job with benefits. This isn't the America I grew up in - it's a new world that no one prepared me for.

Cygnus_X-1 - It would be nice if there was a "border patrol military". I have a good job and I'd quit it to take a pay cut to have a chance to defend my country from Mexico. If they tried to take me to afghanistan I'd die fighting at my doorstep.

Unfortunately teens who go into the military today would be going to afghanistan to get their limbs blown off.

This reminds me of Germany a couple of decades ago. The Turks were found everywhere doing the jobs other Germans wouldn't touch. It was Turks, Armenians and other minorities. Then the wall came down. And Germany's job market was suddenly deluged by other hungry Germans. The East Block Germans had lived a socialistic life and even if unemployed for a long time were taken care of by the State. Well, all that changed in the blink of an eye because some politicians were too hungry to make it into the history books to bother doing a good job. And those hungry Germans now suddenly wanted the jobs, they previously so disdained, quite badly.

I totally agree. Get rid of the party system and let people vote their concious, not because they are loyal to one party or another. Obama would not have been elected if people had voted their concious instead of loyalty to a certain party. I'm not a great Obama supporter but he was elected because the Bush presidency was a train wreck, people wanted a change, and a fairly respectable (I know that's an iffy way to describe a politician) Republican chose a running mate who scared the hell out of moderate voters.

I agree with an earlier post; the two party system is broken, controlled by massive corporate entities and we need an alternative. We usually don't have a "conscience" choice. If we could do that, and not make it a lunatic fringe party from either side, maybe there's a chance. However, without massive grass roots support, probably not feasible, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell of it happening.

Some people need parties to make them feel like they are a part of something, a sense of belonging, the same people who refer to their favorite sport's team as "we", etc... if they didn't have a group to automatically side with they would feel overwhelmed at having to make their own decisions unaware of what others answers are, these are the same people who when part of group being asked a question look around to see what others answers are before giving the same answer as their own. A flock of sheep is the perfect analogy, any American watching an American president sue Americans for enforcing our laws while panders to foreigners who break our laws is a shining example of group psychology as opposed to the rational, fact-based thought. People like this will never give up their own security blanket for something as conceptually intangible and non-group-like as the future of the entire country.

That's called a Work Ethic. Lots of people SAY they have it or SAY they'll take anything but you wont see them picking fruit this fall. You raised a good kid there. People watch how workers deal with down periods and they're the first to be rewarded in the uptick. I'm betting your kid will have his own business within 10 yrs. Not because of gardening skills but pure attitude. Just like you'll see surviving startups getting bought once the resession sorts out the weak ones. That's how capitalism is supposed to work. yard work is definitly a great place for teens to get started working. that was my first "job". i started with my neighbors yard just mowing, and by the nxt summer it was 3 ppl in the neighborhood, mowing, trimming, clearing, and about anything else they had too. for the time it took to do the jobs, the pay was actually really good too.

Good for him. Noting especially he started by volunteering. With all the budget cuts, if the teen doesn't need a job to help support the family (there are those who do) then help someone out and gain some experience and respect from adults in the mean time.

Your kid as initiative! Lucky parents, make sure you let him know you are proud. Show him your blog post! Kids with initiative tend to be successful in life because they don't accept NO for an answer and they make do with what they have. Good for him! And at 40, with 2 kids and a mortgage, I suspect he'll be making at least 4 x the $10 an hour, so don't worry. Teach him about roth IRAs, gold, rainy days, and charity.

It's a win-win for both: The illegals gets more pay than they would in their native country and don't have to pay taxes. The employer gets cheap labor and doesn't have to provide any employer benefits. Even fast food restaurants in some states like california don't ask applicants for social security numbers. Even if they did ask for social security numbers, there are ways for illegals to steal them.

Well, can you blame the big corporations from Illinois and NY? The taxes in those states are so high that they are driving businesses to right-to-work/no union states and off shore.

Perfect example: Carrier use to be the biggest employer in Syracuse, NY. Syracuse University's sports dome, the Carrier Dome, is named after them. In 2004, after the state and the city of Syracuse wouldnt quit jacking their taxes up, they give the big middle finger to NY, laid off around 6,000+ employees and moved west. That is just one of the many businesses that have moved out of NY. If Illinois doesnt change its tax, tax, tax, the hell out of you/go union ways, Caterpillar will be moving out very soon.

I read that today, colleen. Texas is a right-to-work state, meaning no unions. People who live in right-to-work states are, for the most part, people who are proud to work, earn their pay and are proud that they are helping their local, state economy by working and being productive instead of being a drain on it.

Yup, I got a hambuger at Wendy's the other day and the guy I gave my money to was probably 40/45 years old. He has to take care of his family and bills, so he said yes to Wendy's. He was no manager. He was minimum wage fast food. I feel bad for those guys. You don't think it can happen to you. Then your job gets downsized. Most people don't have savings to last but a couple months. And thousands in credit card debt.

That guy was lucky that he could get a fast food job. I've seen older people passed over for retail/service jobs. I don't see any real changes in the demographics of retail/service jobs around here..... Mostly young people and (in some establishments) moms. I've applied for every kind of retail job over the past year and I got "on the list" for Walmart and Target but I was never called in. If you are a "displaced professional" and/or you don't fit the model, it is unlikely that you will be called to work.

I don't know how that minimum-wage Wendy's worker is going to be able to pay too many bills. That kind of job will only stretch his savings to 6 months instead of 3. Unless he owns his home outright, rents, has a wife with a decent job, or he is liquidating a decent 401K or IRA, he's going to be out on the street within a year, Wendy's job or not.

Jobs at Wendy's won't support even a modest "American" life style...

joanna, I agree. He is working at Wendy's, and you wish he could apply that time hunting for a better job, but when bills are past due and utilities are going to be shut off you gotta do something. My girlfriends little sister worked in accounting at one of those places that build sports arenas. She got laid off, had just bought a house, and kind of went into shock for a couple of months. She kept thinking they would call her back, like it was some kind of mistake. Her mom let her have it, telling her to get off her butt and hunt for work. She found work and kept her home, but I know she is a minority among other people in similar situations. Also this was several years ago. Our situations today are much more bleak.

I totally agree. I am sick of them living off of us tax payers and they dont pay a dime in taxes. They also steal steal SS numbers so they can fraudently apply for it in the future. i can understand why they come here but they need to do it without breaking the law. Why should a law breaker get free housing, food stamps, special education for their kids (ESL programs) and medical when there are some Americans like my self canr get any help/ I am living off of 1000 a month and they tell me that I make too much money to qualify. I get most of my food from the food pantry while an illegal in front of me at the store gets $500.00 worth of food with his food stamps. I had to give up my apartment and rent a room because I could no longer afford to live there. The illegal gets subsidized housing. I have no medical insurance so pay out of my own pocket. But the illegals get if for free. I am not asking people to feel sorry for me. Just making a point. There are plenty of people in my position. A survey was published stating that illegals make between 1500 and 2000 a month yet still qualify for freebees. They dont pay taxes and are breaking the law being here. Illegals are eligible for welfare assistance just as much as any legal citizen is. They can get food stamps and a host of other government programs, section 8, medical insurance. There are some states and counties that will even help them with free transportation. don't let hearsay fool you.

So, no wonder companies bring in outsiders on work VISAS to do the jobs we don't have enough Americans trained to do-tough math, science, & medical jobs. With fully 1/3 of all H.S. students NOT graduating, & fully another 1/3 in 4-yr. colleges needing some kind of remedial help, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Well in my opinion. A few small stores in my area are barely making by as it is. I don't think they can afford a large wage increase. However I also feel like that some certain companies and people have more than enough money than they need that can be given to the workers rather then in there pockets.

The problem right now Patrick, is that businesses are running at skeleton crew capacity. One small store might only have 3 employees, one works full time and then 2 part time staff. Even our larger stores here like Walmart and Kmart, Sears, good luck finding anyone working there that can assist you. With the economic issues in retail they can scale down the number of workers they have and work a small crew because they are not needed. Same with private businesses. Employers learned that they can keep functioning at full capacity with less employees or utilize temp employees that they don't have to offer any benefits for.

MAYBE we should go back to taxing the upper class's income at 90% like they did back in the 80s. they've all been making millions of dollars off of the hard work of others and paying their way into politics to keep their taxes low. Why should I have to pay higher sales taxes and higher income taxes than someone making 100 times more than me? they are the ones bringing in immigrants (legal and illegal) to the country to work; they are the ones who benefit from all of the fighting amongst the lower classes; they are still making money while we are all suffering.

our tax dollars are working to make the rich even richer. i don't remember being asked if it was ok to take money out of my paycheck to pay for someone else's annual bonus (that is more than i make in a year). i think it's time to start voting for non-wealthy leadership in america. i'm liking capitalism less and less every day.

Why don't you stop screaming and take a basic economics course? When you do you'll quickly learn that Etrain5139 has it pretty much exactly right.

I know here in Oregon a lot of kids in the Willamette Valley made money picking berries. Then the law came in that banned children from the berry fields. Immigrants from Viet Nam and Cambodia stepped in, and after them, the Hispanics, and then the illegals tooks their places. A lot of fields have since been turned into malls and parking lots.

One of my employers told me that if it wasn't for the lower rate that there was for teens at that time in the '70's, he'd hire an adult instead of a teenager, as the adult would need the job & money more to take care of his or her family.

I started work at 15 as a motel maid on the week-ends, and had to get a worker's permit to do so. The worst part about the job was the teasing at school.

When I go to St. Louis city, I see lots of teenagers rendered

hopelessly unemployable by minimum wage laws. Without any

useful job prospects, they sell drugs as this really is the only

career open to them.

The way AZ lawmakers, and other state lawmakers about to adopt the AZ law, could have solved this whole illegal immigration law being racial discrimination issue is to id and verify citizenship of EVERYBODY cops pull over. Get all the Europeans and canadians living here illegally out too.

Funny you should bring that up ldf01. Along the New Jersey coast, where there are towns with Boardwalks along the beach, businesses there use Eastern European kids for summer jobs. Kids from the Ukraine, Poland, etc. here on work visas for the summer. Working at the pizza parlors, running the kids games, and also the carnival rides along New Jersey's shores. I think that the cities do this because of how colleges and schools are starting earlier in many parts of the country (some grade schools in Georgia started within the first two weeks of August). When you have high school kids and college kids having to leave to go back to school, there is still about another month or so of great weather for vacationers to spend their money. Which means a shortage of teenagers to continue running the businesses in New Jersey and elsewhere. When I was in grade school, we never went back to school until two days after Labor Day, and that was up until I graduated from high school.

What, you want the American young men and women in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, those hell-holes that seasoned military men and women are coming home from so @!$%#ed up they can't function.

You want them over there to be killed and emotionally damaged and screwed over by the government so that illegals can stay here in America and find a safe life?

Take every frickin illegal and put THEM into military training and send them over there. If they come back, give them citizenship. Take the abandoned military bases across the country and house the women and children until their men come back, or if the women want, let them join up too.

They can grow gardens at the bases, and they can be taught skills and ENGLISH. Send teachers to conduct classes for the children. DO SOMETHING positive that benefits both sides of the coin.

My son works at McDonald's and he works the evening shift and told me that he is one of the few English speaking workers at night. My 18 year daughter has been looking for 2 years for a job and still cannot find anything. Don't forget these non-US citizens are also taking jobs from college kids who really need the money to go to school.

I am not an Hispanic hater. I have absolutely no problem with folks from other countries immigrating to ours to try to make a better lives for themselves. I do object to the ones who do this ILLEGALLY! I object to the fact that when one of my family members is injured or sick, I have to pay 100% out of my pocket, can't even get the docs or hospitals to reduce any rates for us "rich white folk", but the people who come into this country illegally get all of the medical care they could ever want, and I, not them, pay for it, with my taxes. My children have gone to every fast food place, hotel, business, craigslist, etc. My oldest finally got a job at Hardees, he gets about 10 hours a week (scheduled), but they like to send him home after he's only been there for an hour or two cause they get slow.

But when you say Illegals, What comes to my mind are people from eastern europe, russia , poland, england ,etc. Mind you the the europeans look identical to Caucasians, White people. So it's not a visual minority we're talking about. but when they speak that is when you can tell english is not their mother tongue.

You might want to find out what the word is on the street about your pay, working conditions, how you treat employees, etc. Or your area of town might have changed, either becoming harder to get to (more industrial, for example) or you might have the "Lake Oswego" effect going on where you're at, where the neighborhood has aged up, so that there are fewer teens or that the income is such that the teens there can work elsewhere for more money or better hours.
