No one addressed people from LA working round the clock for tourists, esp at Mardi Gras time. And if you have ever been in that kind of humidity and mosquitos, sitting in front of a tv in an air conditioned area with a glass of ice tea is real nice. Or even sitting on the porch and talking with the neighbors over tea is real nice too.
I would have guessed Washington D.C., I know it's not a State but with all the lazy Congresspeople working (Oh, I mean not working) there, it has to surpass Louisiana as the laziest if not the most in-affective area of the US.
I don't know much about the rest of LA, but New Orleans gets my vote. People worked plenty to serve me as a tourist, and it can't be easy cookin all of that outstanding food and playing all of that wonderful music. Once again, I'll stand up for New Orleans, a special, one-of-a-kind place with great food, great music, and unique architecture/gardens.
Please.... PUT DOWN THE QUART OF SCHLITZ MALT LIQUOR ! ! !
Marti Gras is, with preperation, one (1) month. So, you tie 1/12, or 8% of the year as hard work???
The facts are in, and reality is a "Biaytch" for those lazy folks in La. I have visited the state over 20 times, and in the beginning thought it was just my perception.
Yet after seeing the streets flooded with unemployed, and Help Wanted signs all over the place, I started asking, or as they say in La (aksin') managers and business owners, I got the same response all over the state:
"WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO HIRE... BUT NOBODY WANTS TO WORK"
Har Har, Justice Fleeting. Don't lump the tens of thousands of people in DC with a few hundred Congressman who don't actually live there. I would say DC is one of these most active with people out running and cycling in raging snow and severe heat. The National Mall never goes a day without people playing some kind of sport along it.
Louisiana has the highest per ca pita alcohol consumption in America; the best food anywhere, beautifully women and bars that in New Orleans stay open 24 hours a day, some bars in the French Quarter do not have locks on the door, since they never close; wow, I know where I am going on my next vacation!
Washington isn't the laziest, just the most incompetent. Be better for the rest of us to relocate Congress and the bureaucracy to Louisiana and turn then loose in the bayous!
I worked in New Orleans for 7 years as a manager of a manufacturing plant. The locals weren't ever much interested in work. As the article says, they weren't lazy, they just had work very low on their priority list. Say, about 20th. Way behind fishing, hunting, partying, crabbing, shrimping, drinking, etc. It was a very fun place to live but damn difficult to get anything done.
I think I'm going to break the trend. I'm putting on my running shoes, and afterwards I'm gonna get ready to write a long ariticle . . . to uh, (Yawn) refudiate . . . ah . . . (Yawn, yawn, ya-a-a-a-w-w-w-n) that re . . yawn . . . port . . . .zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
At least read the article so you can sound at least somewhat intellegent before you start your incoherrant political babbling. It would be nice if people would actually made comments about the contents of an article rather than replying with their preprogrammed brains disengaged. The article was quick to point out that it had absolutely nothing to do with work ethic, and everything to with leisure time lifestyle.
In a new ranking by Businessweek.com based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Louisiana claims the top spot as the country's laziest state. To be clear, by "lazy" we do not mean lacking work ethic or engagement. Rather, it is a measure of leisure time spent doing sedentary activities compared with activities that require more physical effort, such as exercising and even working.
Yeah, well, if I lived in Louisiana, I'd be sport fishing rather than hill climbing, too. It's humid. Headline's kinda lazy, but I guess that's what Business Week was going for.
Sorry La. but I moved to the Pocono's in PA and nowhere have I seen such a low work ethic. Why do today what you can do tommorrow or maybe next week seems to be the motto of the locals. I bought a house and did renovations on it myself and one of the neighbors actually came over and told me to slow down his wife was on his back about housework. People own a pick-up and go to Sears-if they buy a hammer they're a carpenter, if they buy pliers they're an electrician. Work past 2PM not unless the Boss is watching. So sorry New Orleans but I been to your City and seen some hardworking people.
You are a joke and a lazy journalist. What an insult to a state that has shown itself to be on of the most resilient in the nation. With such small population and resources, this state is one of the most productive in the country. The deep cultural background is world class. The rebuilding required and continuing in New Orleans since the largest natural disaster in the U.S.; the thousands of marine personel and fisherman cleaning up the largest environmental oil spill; the thousands of petro-chemical industrial employees and business continuing to bring you the energy and products you demand while all of this is on our shoulders; and the place where the greatest food and music endure perpetually, disagrees with you. Your headline is shoddy and you deserve to be fired.
tyler, do you have a little bit of a "god" complex? what happened to free speech? some people like to read the crazy ranting of off the topic stuff and how people try and tie that into the news thread.
To get myself back on topic, lol, I have lived in the armpit of the U.S., Louisiana, for a few years now. Never have i seen a place where failure and lack of goals are so accepted. Grown men and women, late 20s early 30s, still living with their mama with no job or maybe a McDonald's gig when they feel like it just to quit when the hours don't suit them. Laziest state? A complete understatement. Those that have seen people working hard must have noticed the "out of staters" working somewhere. I watched the DOT take 2 years to build a two lane bridge, one stinking bridge!! If they had been in any normal state that would have taken, at most, half that. Yes it's humid and yes it's hot; but, I'm sure the truck they sat in during their 2 hour lunch was air conditioned. Best bet for this state is to drop welfare and see how many people get to work; or leave. It's bad enough that the whole state smells like wet dog and rotten shrimp, literally.
If you lived in the heat and humidity of Louisiana or any of the Southern Gulf states without the benefit of air conditioning, believe me, you'd take it easy, too. Hot, humid weather lasts about 8 months out of the year and it's difficult to work or play for prolonged hours outdoors. How about the workers on the beaches cleaning up the oil spill- 20 minutes on 40 minutes off. It's hot down here!
I think the word "lazy" is absolutely so misleading to lead off this article. I have relatives in LA, and I've been there countless times, and I know that MOST people are hardworking as hell - they just know when and how to unwind and relax.
But then you have the criminal element there too, especially in the areas bordering the French Quarter in New Orleans. It can be dangerous in that part of the city, whether there was a hurricane or not....
I agree, Bob. When I saw the headline, I thought it was going to be a story about how people in LA work less than anywhere else in the country. After reading the article, I saw it's just they prefer to sit and relax in their off time moreso than anywhere else. Completely misleading headline. Apparently MSNBC (as well as a lot of goups in this country) think that if you aren't exercising every minute of your off time, you must be lazy.
I know what it's like to have to work in 100 degree/90% humidity. On those days after work, I prefer to sit and relax as well.
I think the article was of the quality I expect from US reporting, real information is secondary, entertainment and controversy (what our public really likes, because thinking is work and we are all lazy).
About half the news and studies I read are aimed easy thinking folks.
I guess that laid back attitude of Louisianans is what makes Louisiana so appealing. And I totally agree that the title of the article was misleading. I've just gotten to where I expect that from the leads on the MSN home page. As for "lazy", I do wonder about the people who sit around looking at "empirical" data in order to produce these useless articles. I do enjoy reading the comments though.
Hey, since TV is a major contributing factor to health and obesity problems, does that mean they are going to ban it? Just like they are trying to do with transfats? I think that would be great! Physically, mentally and emotionally TV (and movies) become nothing more than mental "junk food."
No matter how good you put a light on it. Please look and see that there is a problem, that's where it starts. Try to put it in a information idea and not a protective idea and you may learn something.
To be clear, by "lazy" we do not mean lacking work ethic or engagement. Rather, it is a measure of leisure time spent doing sedentary activities compared with activities that require more physical effort, such as exercising and even working.
Your an idiot. He explains what he means in the very beginning of the article. That laziness is not about work ethic but about SEDENTARY ACTIVITIES. So he's not poking fun at how lazy they are in terms of working.
Is the state Lazy or just relaxed. Midwest people go crazy and live for the government. as much corruption, the lost of cities and nawlins still prosper. If they are so lazy is because america flocks there to be lazy and enjoy all the festivals. what you think of yourselves now!!!!
Come on people use a dictionary for once. When used as adjective lazy mean among other things
1. averse or disinclined to work, activity, or exertion; indolent.
2.
causing idleness or indolence: a hot, lazy afternoon.
3.
slow-moving; sluggish: a lazy stream.
4.
(of a livestock brand) placed on its side instead of upright.
I'm sure the money rolling in from Katrina and now BP isn't helping anything. The Exxon Valdez helped Alaska become the state of games and fun. They learned to live off of what Exxon brought to them and continue to come up with reasons to syphon more money from the oil giant. This is only the beginning for Louisiana. I also forgot to mention that it could be worse. Most of the garbage that left there during Katrina ended up in the boardering states so they're still taking the brunt of that.
I have to wonder where you get your information on Alaska and Exxon, I would expect from Exxon. In fact, you appear to be a person planted by the oil giants to somehow push the blame from Exxon and BP onto the victims and off the offenders. This is just what the country needs, take the blame off BP and put it on the Gulf residence. If you are not planted by oil companies, you sure need some education in the history of Exxon and Alaska. Exxon’s bill has been reduced several times and they still refuse to pay. As for the people of the South being lazy, give it a break, the article states the information has nothing to do with work or work ethics. How long do you think you would last exercising in that heat and humidity? Your mention of “the garbage” does not deserve a reply.
If you think Exxon did Alaska a favor think again. 90% of the people that helped clean up after their f-up are dead from this. Hope the same dosen't happen here to us. Also about money rolling in you're an IDIOT if you think that is the case. I know people that were retired and had to go back to work because they couldn't get any help from this screwed up system called FEMA ( Fix Everything My Ass).I didn't receive a dime my expenses are almost doubled house note etc. Before you open your dumb ass mouth get the facts JACKASS. P.S. Hope some of that garbage moved next to you or in your neighbor hood.
sad but true (I knew clean up workers in AK who said it was a $$ fest, they lined up at the trough)...then there was the irreversible destruction of the impacted ecology...it was, right....we weren't mislead were we ??
Mike...1336, I hope you have no job that involves others...that statement about 90 % being dead is so wacked out you should be embarassed. It was oil (think the stuff in your crank case, and the odors at the gas station)...not weapons grade uranium.
John it was the chemicals in the oil that killed these people. I work in the refinery industry I know what exposure to these chemicals do if you're not properly protected. The 90% is a fact look it up. You like most others are wacked out and don't know the facts. Think before you speak or is that possible. These people died from all types of cancers and other illnesses. The oil you speak of is refined that oil is raw which means it still contains high levels of benzene and other cancer causing agents. Don't critize people if your to dumb to know the facts.
When did the topic turn to Alaska? This is about Louisiana, not about them being lazy but about them not getting enough exercise, which is a problem with our entire nation. But it's not about oil in Alaska or oil in Louisiana.
What a lazy journalist! Oh, I mean laid back. What an insult to a state that has shown itself to be on of the most resilient in the nation. With such small population and resources, this state is one of the most productive in the country. The deep cultural background is world class. The rebuilding required and continuing in New Orleans since the largest natural disaster in the U.S.; the thousands of marine personel and fisherman cleaning up the largest environmenatl oil spill; the thousands of petro-chemical industrial employees and business continuing to bring you the energy and products you demand while all of this is on our shoulders; and the place where the greatest food and music endure perpetually, disagrees with you. Your headline is shoddy and you deserve to be fired.
Duhhhhhh ! theres a shock. We have been visiting that area for 4 years and people there still have not cleaned up their yards or homes. Outside of the Garden District New Orleans is a disgrace.
I don't think the article is attacking the work ethic of Louisianians at all. In fact, the author issues a quick disclaimer saying that lazy is the lack of physical activity and not work ethic. As a former New Orleanian that now lives in Colorado, the difference in lifestyles is glaringly obvious and I firmly attribute it to two things: humidity and bugs. Southern Louisiana had plenty of both which made it suck being outdoors (I loathe lovebugs) while Colorado has very little of either and makes being outdoors a joy. I know that there are other reasons as well, but I know since moving here that I have enjoyed the outdoors so much more. I bike, run and hike. The one thing I don't do is eat as much as Colorado's food is nothing compared to Louisiana's.
And please stop making everything political. Unless it is a political story, the political comments of blaming red and blue are really quite annoying.
Christy, you are really right about the climate and the bugs being a problem for those living in Louisiana. I live in Florida and it is unbearable outside even in the morning. It is so hot and sticky, who in there right mind would want to work out in that! I was in Colorado and Utah a few weeks ago and spent most of my time outside - why? No humidity to deal with and also very few bugs.
Christy, you're 100% right for those who read the article it does point out they aren't attacking our work ethic (see my stats quoted in #3.2 above), but how many people see an article's headline and simply leave it at that? From a journalistic aspect that's misleading and inflammatory to us. Maybe he'd want to revise the headline and say we're the most sedentary state for our pastimes.
Although, having lived in the cold upper northeast regions and currently working on rotation shifts in Alaska (84 hour work weeks, 4 weeks straight, 2 weeks off), I cannot say I see much outside activity in winter time up here. I find it hilarious that people along the Atlantic seaboard have been complaining about the draining heat for the two short periods they had 100 degree weather (not even record setting), yet are so quick to criticize an area that deals with those temperatures from April through the end of October.
Right on, Christi and others. I live in Central Texas and just now I'm hearing thunder rumble and rumble and rumble. No rain. I would like to start my days by taking my little dog for a walk in the park, but I'm not about to go to a public park in the dark. And even long before sunlight, it's still too hot for me to be out walking. So, like our sensible neighbors to the east, I sit inside with my computer or go watch TV or just kick back with my small dog by my side to pet her and relax. P.S. I'm one of the over the hill people who don't count because I'm retired. P.P.S. I love the comments of people from Louisiana. Even when they write, there's a lilt to what they say.
You might want to check your facts about the heat on the Atlantic side. I live in Newport News, VA, and this has been, hands down, the hottest summer on record. The average summer temp here is around 89; Sunday had a record-breaking high of 105. That's WITHOUT the heat index. Oh, and this is at least the third week this summer we've had temperatures this high, and probably the sixth record that has been set this year. I haven't been able to do anything outside on the weekends nearly all summer because the heat is too intense for me and my six-month-old baby. It has even given me migraines! I've lived in Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina, so I know how bad the heat and humidity can get. Trust me, Easterners aren't just blowing smoke about a few warm days!
@laptopdancer: it is hot when people fish. The only difference is that when you are on or near water, the temperature feels cooler because of the breezes coming off the water. Also, fishing in the southern states is often more than just a pastime. It's a way to get a cheap and tasty dinner!
Liberal non believers usually think belivers are fair game for all types of cutesy, snide remarks. Shows the lack of tolerence they accuse believers of having. Guess that says all that needs to be said about liberals, doesn't it.
Jesus, ....on the stool next to me, the guy with the fishes and loaves, in front of him, long hair, talks with an accent. give me your number I will let him know you are looking for him
racaille, post 13.6,
You say the the Liberals hadn't cornerned the market on non-believeing? You are right. Almost. It is the Liberals that want God out of the Pledge of Allegiance, the Back of our currency, out of our courthouses and public buildings, and the list goes on. They don't corner the Market, but, they sure are finding as many ways as possible to take "God" out of America. BTW, America, as stated in the Constitution, was FOUNDED on Christian beliefs, but, there is an amendment in the Bill of Rights that ALLOWS for youe freedom to choose who you worship, if at all. It DOES NOT say that any reference to Religion, the Ten Commandments, or anything else has to be forbidden in our society. The Liberals and supporting Athiests are the Anti-Religion group shoving "NON-BELIEF" down the throat of the Majority of FREE AMERICANS, yes, the Bleedin' Heart Lib's, and at the same time, these Libs in Congress and in the Courts, will declare that "Oh yes, I attend Church regularly", just vote me in and I'll remove your right to display our Nations Founding Principles.
Ray-1033782
BTW, America, as stated in the Constitution, was FOUNDED on Christian beliefs,
Wrong. Our country was founded by masons who by definition could be any religion. They mention god - but not the christian god. Good job making crap up though.
Now here is another classic example of B.P. is the government in the U.S; Lets advertize the people here in LA are lazy, so the claims they put in will be adjusted to lazy pay. The whole world is money and all wars are oil. Have not these people suffered enough?
Awe...A fine upstanding company like BP wouldn't do a thing like that. You need to watch more T.V. their commercials clearly say that they are "here to stay untill we make this right".
BP wouldn't want to undermine a fine sentiment like that by paying someone to write a derogatory article impuning the character of the very people who they are so concerned about.
Big business always puts the people first. That's why they went into business in the first place, to provide for the people who they are constantly looking out for.
I am sure you noted the years of the study: 2004-2008. Who was in the white house then Pat? I am sure with your unbiased opinion we all have learned a tremendous amount about your intellect. And of course you were right on the discussion topic, correct? Get yourself on out of that box in your mind and get a grip!
I would like to see the people who think we are lazy come down here and try to hang with us. Everyone I know here is hard working and takes nothing for granted. Of course we have those who walk around with their hand out but that's not the majority of us. We could go on here and pick apart every state if we wanted to. Whoever wrote this article and did the research is a real dumbass.
I completly agree. It isn't the people that are lazy it was the reasearch workers that were lazy.. ...they must have looked for the specific people they used in their study. just the way it is written it makes me thing that the ones who wrote this and the reasearchers had predetermined their conclusion. I spent 20 years in the navy and i seen lazy people all across this nation. But there were alot of good hard working people now being accused of being lazy. LA dosn't get snow so there is no necessity for them to work at clearing it away where The dakotas get snow and if they don't clear it away they anre completly shut in
If you do outdoor work in a southern coastal climate you are best advised to go with the flow of the weather. You'll live longer that way. It's bigger than you. I'm writing this at 8 AM in the southern tip of Texas on the gulf coast. The temperature is about 80 and the humidity is 100%. By afternoon the temperature will be in triple digits. So far there is no breeze and if there is one later it will feel like it's coming off of a brush fire. The old Mexican way of dealing with this is the siesta, a darn good adaptation. When I ran house framing crews we started work at daylight and continued until noon. Then we took a lunch break (siesta) until 5PM and worked until we couldn't see. Since dark comes at about 9PM that means, yes, we spent a lot of time doing nothing, but it also means we spent a full ten hours doing hard outdoor work in one of this country's hottest climates. My son now runs the framing crews. Steve and Ed, if you think they're lazy come follow them around.
Well I am glad you live in TX because here in FL all CONSTRUCTION workers ( i.e plumbers who dig ditches, roofers, framers, electricians, etc....) all start work at the crack of dawn and work the WHOLE day to finish the job, because taking a siesta or nap in the afternoon is only for sissies who cant handle the heat and should find other job occupations!!!!!!! We Floridians dont need to take any pointers from those lazy asses in Mexico. We see how well that economy is doing since everyone who works there has a nap every afternoon.
Don't listen to the Floridian, only an idiot would be happy to be a wage slave and work in high heat and humidity with no support for his family should he be hurt on the job or worse. Floridians are on their own and smaller companies don't offer accident insurance or life insurance. Being an independent contractor means you have to sort that out all by yourself and most don't because they are unaware of it. Florida will gladly sit by and goad you to work to death and berate you for caring for your health. The saying; all work and no play? Too true here. Florida is home to the angriest city - Orlando, wonder why? If you are not rockin a scorched, bleached look or don't have enough bags under your eyes, or your disposition ain't cranky enough, then you're not workin! -Please, you can keep it. I'll be just fine in my A/C office designing multimedia presentations and flirting with the office girls next door thank you very much. Call me a sissy all you like, Florida's a gun state, I'll be ok. Don't kill yourself over a damn job.
I want to say something but I know it would be pouring gas on the fire. Just one suggestion. Take a break, try to get that blood pressure back down to normal.
I'm supposed to be helping a friend tear off a composition roof today here in Fort Worth. He mentioned something about picking up some help down on Hemphill St. Think I'll take a pass and let him hire all his help down on Hemphill St.
I'm 53 and don't do the heat as well as I used to.
No shocker here. Iowa, Mississippi, Texas have all had devastating natural disasters and the people of those towns effected rebuilt, they didn't sit around waiting for the government to help, they picked up a hammer and helped rebuild their own communities. The people of New Orleans are STILL waiting on someone else to do all the work. NOT ALL of Louisiana is lazy, lots of hard working people live there, but New Orleans specifically is filled with lazy people. After Katrina a lot of churches went down there to help rebuild, but shockingly none of the young men in the community would pick up a hammer and help the volunteers rebuild...they sat on the sidewalk drinking beer and watching as volunteers rebuilt their homes for them. Sorry, all that "you owe me" attitude left a bitter taste in my mouth. New Orleans specifically need to get off their lazy butts and stop waiting on the government to help them, they need to help themselves. Sorry for the rant. Again, there are a lot of hard working people in LA, they just don't seem to live in New Orleans from what I've seen.
ummm, i was in louisiana in the fall and LOTS of louisianaians stopped by to help and work along side of us. so sorry you had a bad experience. i was in the 8th ward in new orleans.
and don't forget about those who after rita (yes, the hurricane after katrina, which is often forgotten) took care of things on their own. that was in southwestern la.
check your facts before bitchin about something you know nothing about.
also, last i checked louisiana is also the happiest state as of last fall. :)
They are in other cities in Texas as well, and where they are is where the crime stats went up by double digits. I had heard a while back that Houston was having problems.
I feel sorry for the states that inherited all the scum from Louisiana. The crime is worse here in New Orleans than ever so some scum has made it back. I lived in Chalmette La. when Katrina hit had 22 ft. of water, rode out the storm at a friends house on the north shore, lived off of a generator for 38 days. Didn't get no help from the gov. we just sucked it up and moved on.
Mike-1336400, you probably agree with the comments I make then, as you know they are true, and the Mayor and Governor "Forfeited" the 9th Ward for Political gain only, Right?
As for Katrina, we all knew it would rise it's head here. The truth about that is, the MAYOR failed, along with the GOVERNOR, to use ANY assets available to evacuate the Population, ever. They PREVENTED people from leaving by closing Highways an bridges. They REFUSED to use the 5,000 or so School busses, because the budget would not allow for the fuel and paying of Drivers. They offered NOTHING, knowing the Storm was going to devistate the area. They NEVER asked for Federal Help, as required by Law, until it was too late to save anything. The Federal Government CANNOT enter into or assist in any Disaster until the GOVERNOR of that State requests it. To do so Violates both States Rights and Federal emergency law. These laws were written when the Texas coast at Galveston was destroyed in the early 1900's, and are still valid, if not outdated severly, today. You all want to Blame the Bush Administration for lack of support, but, when the Water receeded, didn't the Mayor tell the Governor that "Now we can make New Orleans more Chocolate" and use Federal money, not State as required, to do it. What is "More Chocolate"? It means they want to rebuild the area to suit the Black population they want to attract to the new New Orleans, the don't want no-one but Black moving back, that is "More Chocolate". After he was caught saying that, as in true Liberal fashion, he "Apologized" and all was forgiven. The dollars still flow, if he had been a White Mayor making those statements, he probably would have been immediatly replaced, jailed, tried and convicted of "Hate Crimes", and never allowed to enter politics again. I have no sympathy for N.O., but it still is a great place to visit, as long as you keep your hand tightly around your cash and cards.
@ Ray, I still live in Louisiana and nothing pisses me off more that the games our goverment plays with the people. The goverment that was in place at the time of this tradegy should be arrested and tried for stupidity if we could. Or at least for murder for failing to get the people out in time. I now live on the Northshore in the country away from all the BS in the city. Just think if a WHITE mayor would have said we are going to make this a VANILLA city ther would have been hell to pay.
Well, we had folks brought to Austin, Texas, after Katrina who had no place to live, had lost what little they had, and we did our best to help them. I particularly remember a man from New Orleans who was trying very hard to learn his way around the city because the only job he had been able to find was delivering business papers from one office to another driving his own vehicle. He was making a delivery to the office I was working in. He told me that he appreciated what the locals were trying to do for people, but he would rather do for himself.
There are probably people in the central and north central states who appreciate what it's like to go through major disasters, because it looks like they have been having some very hard times with flooding and tornados. I grew up on the Gulf coast and lived there many years, so I know how traumatic these disasters can be. I guarantee you, having a roof blown off the house you are in during a hurricane does tend to shake you up. What I am seeing in some comments is a wanton attacking of people. So uncalled for.
Ray and Mike - Thanks for telling it like it is. I get so damned mad every time I think of Nagin making his "chocolate" comment. Since then, I've found, there's nothing in New Orleans that I can't find in Baton Rouge.
And, yes, weeks after Katrina, blacks were sitting on their stoops, as they so often do, with debris everywhere. And instead of pitching in to clean up their very OWN yard, they waited for someone from the government to come and do it for them. Nicholls State University housed some evacuees and had to HIRE janitors to clean up after them because they were too damn lazy to clean up after themselves. Disgusting.
wow alot of complaints about New Orleans. My biggest complaint is one of the whole disaster preparedness. Hello you know it is going to happen so why don't you all just do for yourselves early. No one is responsiable for you but Yourself. The complaints about the local Government still fall in this catagory the Government didn't put you where you live. You were born and raised there these disasters happen all the time Prepare yourself now so we all don't have to hear you say the Government screwed up last time so we will follow in their footsteps again this time. Quit Blameing Others for your own lack of concern and preparedness. Only a fool would build below sea leval that close to the gulf. Everyone knows you can only hold back so much water for so long then eventualy nature will take it's course.
In the Northeast we run at 6AM instead of noon time, or go workout at an air conditioned gym. The only thing I've stopped doing in this heat is heavy gardening. I can't get motivated to pull weeds in this heat.
I live in Louisiana. I am supposed to be working right now! This article made me stop and think for a second, "I need another Dr. Pepper and an snack." And yes, I quit reading the article halfway through to write this message. I wonder if it will rain today. Time to check the weather.
Agreed! It's amazing ready through these comments how rude people can be to complete strangers. Everyone is allowed to their opinion but man people straight out attack other people here and it has nothing to even do with the article.
How about doing an analsyis on every state and comparing gross product to gross product. You can make any assumption you want after jetting in and out for a week. The fact of the matter is this. Louisiana is a tourist magnet because of the food and various festivals. New Orleans is the only city that I know of that celebrates sports championships by having a parade, not burning cars or looting businesses. As far as outdoor activities are concerned, there are more outdoor sports at longer times of the year than any other state. Do we know how to "kick back"? You bet. In fact, Louisiana is the only state where several million people can drink a beer together and celebrate the time of life. If you are hungry, sit down and eat, here, it does not matter who you are, or what you are.
New Orleans is the only city I know of where the citizens would rather have a parade and drink beer than rebuild their own damn house. Oh wait, the government and volunteers are suppose to do all the heavy lifting while the actual residents are kicked back at the parade without a care in the world.
24 hours is the warning they had in New Orleans. Maybe you will be so lucky as to go through what they did. Yes mistakes where made but it was Bush that stopped the Marine vessel that was comming up behind the storm to help. It wasn't anyone in Louisiana that told rescue teams they couldnt go in because they wernt cleared by Homland Security. The proublem happened after the storm had left when the levees gave way those are the federal goverments responsibility (flood controle act of 1929). You cannot let an unlicened person drive a bus and most of the people with the ability to get out where out. I understand you have been through bodys floating in the street and police exicuting people. I understand you have had your city basicly wiped off the map. What have they done about all this oil comming on the shore except complain they want to build a berm that will take 9 months out of sand. That parade you speek of was a funerial prosession for the city maybe you should learn about customs look up Jazz Funeral. We had the largest civil port in the US and 5th largest in the world destroyed had those people stoped working you would have known it. You would have seen things like coffee sugar steel rice go through the roof. The wheat ,corn ,soybeans and various other crops would have rotted in the midwest because the couldnt have gotten them out. New Orleans if vital to the economy of the US. It will survive and hopfully under Landrew it will rise to the prosperity it had under his father. Remember when it was the largest port in the world the largest city in the south one of the richest in this country remember 1975?
@ raleybuilder I agree 100%, @Jen is a dumb ass not from here I guess her comment on this is the most stupid remark I've read on here and there are a bunch of them.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Katrina or the gulf spill. It has to do with culture. The culture in the south is in large part climate driven...very often too hot and humid for physical activities. This has created a culture of sitting...watching TV, sitting, drinking, sitting some more...generations participating in the same activities or lack of activity has created the culture of laziness. Think about the planet Earth. The least productive regions on earth are climate related, specifically heat related. The deep south suffers from the same malady and it isn't about to change because people don't move to the south (Florida excepted). Atlanta is the other perfect exception because people move to Atlanta from all over the U.S., without the cultural bias of the deep south. People who haven't experienced the southern culture can see the differences with their northern culture and they don't buy into the attitudes of the south. They remain productive because it's how they were raised and the cultural differences between the deep south and the rest of the country.
I'm from there the priorities in the New Orleans area and most of the state are family, party, work. Anyone that has lived along the Gulf coast knows enough to avoid the mid-day heat unless your work or play takes you outside.
Since I am in the Dakotas and putting in my immense 5 hours of work a day. I don't have alot of time to talk now. Will get back in my 19 hours of down time.
Sorry Rickie but ethnicity has nothing to do with lazyness.. ..Maybe you should read your history books and see who was doing the work in the early days. It is the individual they can be of any ethnicity and be lazy or on the other hand one of the hardest workers you ever meet
I agree, ethnicity has absolutely nothing to do with lazyness. However, it would be complete and utter fallacy to assert that african americans were the original workers in this country. Maybe you should read your history books ;).
This article isn't worth the web page it's written on, talk about stereotypical views that all Delta regional people are lazy, and oh by the way we eat a lot more watermelon than the rest of the country
Reason why Louisiana is totally dependent on the compensation from the BP oil spill to survive....There is nothing in that state apart from parasites and I do not mean the mosquitoes....
Hey mapleleaf your an ASS. If you think we're parasites than you must be a pile of crap. I work 40 to 80 hrs per week yu dumb ass. And the people that are getting money from BP are the ones that were suppling 45% of the seafood to the U.S. now they can't make a living because of BP you dumb ass.
I beg to differ. Not only do we work hard on the oil Rigs & Rice fields( Which are in the mist of harvest right now.) but we produce the best food and more fun than any other state that I know and I lived in quite a few.
Mike, your anger with some senseless, unwaranted statements is understandable. Just wish you would leave out some of the vulgarity. Otherwise, I totally agree with you.
Justice Fleeting you need a bowel cleansing enema. You are full of feces.
Mule=donkey=ass=Democrat=liberal.
@justice fleeting:
Just ice sleeting
At least read the article so you can sound at least somewhat intellegent before you start your incoherrant political babbling. It would be nice if people would actually made comments about the contents of an article rather than replying with their preprogrammed brains disengaged. The article was quick to point out that it had absolutely nothing to do with work ethic, and everything to with leisure time lifestyle.
Yeah, well, if I lived in Louisiana, I'd be sport fishing rather than hill climbing, too. It's humid. Headline's kinda lazy, but I guess that's what Business Week was going for.
2, 3, 5 deleted, political derails sandwiched around an extrapolation about all Southern states being lazy. Back on-topic.
Will-422749, not restoring. Reads like you're accusing another Viner of being drunk.
Sorry La. but I moved to the Pocono's in PA and nowhere have I seen such a low work ethic.
If you really feel this way, we don't need you. We don't want you. Go home.
OOPS :) I attached this to the wrong post.. SORRY!! :)
Appealing? I live here. Tell me where it's appealing, please, I want to go there.
LIAR!
I absolutely agree Bob!
READ PEOPLE
Your an idiot.
Is Nevada the same way with Las Vegas? No and their party is all year long. What do you think of that?
Come on people use a dictionary for once. When used as adjective lazy mean among other things
When used as a verb it means to laze
to idle or lounge lazily
Just know it's hard to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person and you are as unarmed as they get!
When did the topic turn to Alaska? This is about Louisiana, not about them being lazy but about them not getting enough exercise, which is a problem with our entire nation. But it's not about oil in Alaska or oil in Louisiana.
I'd read the list if I could just get my lazy ass off of the sofa
Garbage? You mean the poor blacks who helped New Orleans take care of all those tourists?
Duhhhhhh ! theres a shock. We have been visiting that area for 4 years and people there still have not cleaned up their yards or homes. Outside of the Garden District New Orleans is a disgrace.
Because if its raining outside my window - it must be raining all over the world.
Not worth the comment.
Well, Ed, are you a bigot about other groups too (African Americans, Mexicans, etc) or do you only consider Southerners to be inferior?
Don't know who ED is but if he thinks we're inferior bring his dumb ass on down here. What a FN MORON
You are so right about the politics! Give it a rest people...
Right on, Christie! It seems that everything is now a cause for political argument.
But isn't it hot when you fish too?
Hey Voter-in-LA,
You might want to check your facts about the heat on the Atlantic side.
Gluttony and Sloth are sins.
Where's Jesus?
racaille
Out following his dad's example and getting a virgin pregnant.
-god, Now that was funny, thanks for the smile
Jesus has NOTHING to do with this TOPIC .....
Maybe YOU should go to church and Pray -- that is where ALL the sinners go , IJS
I thought all sinners went to Hell.
Church..Hell...same thing.
Liberal non believers usually think belivers are fair game for all types of cutesy, snide remarks. Shows the lack of tolerence they accuse believers of having. Guess that says all that needs to be said about liberals, doesn't it.
I didn't realize that liberals had cornered the market on non-believing?
I guess that's all that need to be said about the godsquad.
Wrong. Our country was founded by masons who by definition could be any religion. They mention god - but not the christian god. Good job making crap up though.
Jesus was a liberal
shutup knowitall
Now this was a discouraging set of comments.
Jesus is hanging down in LA, just chillin' on de bayou
I would write something here but I'm too lazy.
Was going to read your comment in it's entirety but I was too lazy to finish it. Wonder if we need to hire a Lazy Czar in DC?
wasgoing to wri smthing but 2 lazy
Me three...
Now don't you feel better?
Pat G:
I am sure you noted the years of the study: 2004-2008. Who was in the white house then Pat? I am sure with your unbiased opinion we all have learned a tremendous amount about your intellect. And of course you were right on the discussion topic, correct? Get yourself on out of that box in your mind and get a grip!
Lazy? Come to Indiana , chk out R Youngerman
Statistics can be manipulated to say anything. Statistically this article should GEAUX in the trash!!!!
@poeoboie
I 2nd Your Comment....
it's the People that don't live in Louisiana, that WE should be concerned about....
Geaux Tigers !!!!! :)
Don't kill yourself over a damn job.
usa is great
I want to say something but I know it would be pouring gas on the fire. Just one suggestion. Take a break, try to get that blood pressure back down to normal.
dnimerick
Yea, a lot of them are in Houston. They got off the bus n never went back.
ummm, i was in louisiana in the fall and LOTS of louisianaians stopped by to help and work along side of us. so sorry you had a bad experience. i was in the 8th ward in new orleans.
and don't forget about those who after rita (yes, the hurricane after katrina, which is often forgotten) took care of things on their own. that was in southwestern la.
check your facts before bitchin about something you know nothing about.
also, last i checked louisiana is also the happiest state as of last fall.
Any data on physical activity in the northeast during the current heat wave?
ya - i'm in side in my airconditioning reading this...wait....i'm...falling....asle...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
@cajunkid, YES ----------- THEY Are ALL Crying Daily
I'm Melting can be heard even Wayyyyyyyy Down Here in Louisiana - LOL !!!
point made! as a transplant from louisiana to the northeast, i'm dying right now! oh, and i've only left my apt 3 times since friday!
Just another piece of news made to make us fight each other...
Agreed! It's amazing ready through these comments how rude people can be to complete strangers. Everyone is allowed to their opinion but man people straight out attack other people here and it has nothing to even do with the article.
Everyone is a complete badass and will say anything when they don't actually have to look the other person in the face.
It's obvious to any thinking person. Any state with high African population will be high on list of lazy. But then, maybe they have the right idea?
Do you consider yourself superior other groups also or do you just hate people from Louisiana?
