I'd like a salad that doesn't have meat that is a real salad and not a side. I think the meat should be an addon instead of put in it. That leaves me out as a vegetarian and so my family doesn't do to Wendy's any more.
Ok vegetarians... the thing about ordering food any place is that you can order it the way you want it... so if you don't want meat just order without meat... I have allergies to an ingredient found in a lot of menu items and special order my food every time i go out, but I'm not about to ask the restaurants to stop putting tomatoes on EVERYTHING they serve.
The Wendy's by my office won't allow for substitutions on the new salads. I have been a vegetarian for 16 years never had problems with substitutions until now, McDs even makes me a grilled cheese if I need it. I asked for an apple salad at Wendy's and I had to get the manager to give it to me without chicken (it took 10 minutes!). I'm sure most veggies are used to ordering with substitutions but not giving them to us, like Wendy's is now, is not very customer friendly. So sorry cullen03, Wendy's has a problem now with us vegetarians.
They finally realized that the vegetarian market is growing and they are missing out by offering a limited menu. I wish they'd go out of business altogether. This country's insatiable desire for eating red meat is killing us, and the planet. It takes 5,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of hamburger (that includes raising feed for the animal, etc.) We'll never learn compassion for animals, for the planet or for ourselves until we change our deplorable eating habits.
mozzie, not a fan of wendy's but really hate your type that wants to tell everyone else how to live. you should move to north korea while they're still one of the few communist countries left. meanwhile, in the land of the free, we'll be able to eat what we like, and that includes vegetarians. maybe you can't go to wendy's, big freakin deal, I wouldn't think you'd want to in the first place. besides, most cities have areas that are pretty gay friendly and they have all sorts of places I'm sure you'd like.
What a stupid and downright ignorant reply to a perfectly acceptable post. Why dont you raise your head above your burger and take a look around you, the world is changing, you are stuck in the past.
We all have our preferences! I go to Wendy's BECAUSE they have meat in the salads, there is NO fat involved, and they are delicious! Hardee's is also a co-favorite! Just relegate yourself to McDonald's, where the stuff all tastes the same, like ground ox-hoofs. We will visit Wendy's more often now, to cancel out you people who don't go because you don't care for good food!
@ cmon-864012~what a useless, insensitive comment to make. What do vegetarians have to do with sexuality? Up until that last sentence, your post made sense. Eat some meat and maybe your brain won't fart. Blondie
This is a prime example of good posts going bad. There is no reason to berate vegans or chastise carnivores. This is an article about fast food salads. You are not with the times or living in the past because of what you eat in your car for lunch. Admit it, if you're grabbing a fast food "meal" it's just that, fast food.
Some of us vegetarians need to eat out with others who are not vegetarians. I am a vegetarian; my son is not. If we are going to eat at the same place, I need a viable option. This is why Wendy's has salads, so that a group of people with varied dietary needs goes out, Wendy's is an option. The vegetarian usually brings a couple carnivores with them. This is where Wendy's makes their money.
Having said this, many times the salads are pre-made and you can't order them without the bacon, chicken, etc. What Wendy's should have done was made the vegetable part of the salad 4.99, and had the chicken or bacon as an add-on for 5.99. By the way, $6 is what I would pay for a value meal, so the salad is appropriately priced. Add a baked potato and water, and you are in business.
My real question is, are the dressings full of HFCS, the McD's are? The package says Newman's, but there is HFCS in it, where as the Newman's in the grocery store does not.
Being an employee with a Wendy's franchisee, I can assure you that Wendy's has the ability to serve any salad without the chicken - since each of Wendy's products are to a great extent prepared after the customer places his order, the customer can order what they want - not what's sitting under a heat lamp already pre-made.
This is good to know. Is the salad dressing full of HFCS or is it more like the kind you get in the grocery store? This is not an attack question, I would like to know because if the salad is served already pre-mixed, you can't tell by reading the label.
Nonsense. Wendy's serves a salad without meat in the side and full size. And to be perfectly blunt, it's been proven that a diet light in meat is healthier than a vegitarian diet. A vegan diet isn't very healthy at all. Sorry... but I'm just relating the actual science (as per the New England Journal of Medicine).
Tarc: ...it's been proven that a diet light in meat is healthier than a vegitarian diet. A vegan diet isn't very healthy at all.
I disagree -- at least as your statement applies to vegetarians. Since the 1960's, the way animals are processed for food is not healthy anymore. They are injected with growth hormones, strong antibiotics and other unsavory things that I don't wish to take into my system. This applies to beef, pork and poultry. Meat processors are not concerned with providing a healthy product; they care only about their bottom line. Protein is necessary for humans to sustain a healthy life; however, there are multiple sources of vegetable protein available to maintain health without having to consume meat.
There is a reason I have had Cmon on my ignore list for a long time...
As to this idea, I like it. Salads (real ones) served in Wendy's, as well as breakfast (which could be vegetarian too) make sense today. Note, please, as a disclaimer, I am a former vegetarian myself, and I own quite a bit of WEN stock (I bought in when the Arby's group bought them, figuring they could turn Wendy's around), so I am not without some bias. However having healthier meal choices, Vegetarian meal choices, and hopefully even Vegan choices in the future, will not only profit Wendy's (and myself), but will help launch a trend.
Next shareholder meeting, I will see if I can get a petition going for more Vegetarian and Vegan items. I'll need a lot of others help, but it could happen. Vegan Chili isn't a hard thing to make, nor would allowing vegan or Vegetarian burgers. Lower in fat, high protein and tasty. To me it sounds like a smart business move to try and get ahead of the health/vegetarian curve. Wendy's/Arby's Group could even team with one or more well known vegetarian food companies.
All in all, better to have the choice of a healthy meal, even if you are not a vegetarian yourself, than keep the obesity rates, and thus the health-related costs, going up. Good ideas people! (with noted exceptions)
No Party: Thank you for your efforts at possibly introducing a proposal that Wendy's provide choices for vegetarians. I worked for them for a brief period in 1978, a flegling company then, and they were completely devoted to just one product. They may be open to alternative selections if it enhances their bottom line. It certainly would be cost effective for them.
I don't indulge in any "fast food" for the most part (Chipotle is my weakness, however); but in a pinch, if Wendy's offered something that I could enjoy, it would be a consideration for me.
No Party: Maybe you don't remember the Wendy's spin-off, D'lites. A chain that did cater to vegans and offered salads, a salad bar and soups. They eventually started selling hamburgers and sandwiches trying to stay afloat. Wendy's was struggling to stay alive and closed the D'lites franchise.
Honestly, I didn't remember D'lites. However, just because a concept failed in the past doesn't mean it will always fail. My idea is simply that Wendy's start offering a wider range of food options in a single place. Offer egg white breakfasts along with regular eggs; offer vegetarian salads of meal size along with ones with chicken; offer Vegetarian and/or Vegan food choices along with Omnivore choices. This then allows many people of different walks of life to enjoy meals in the same place. With fast Food restaurants now required to show all of the same info you can see on an item purchased from a supermarket, I foresee people wanting healthier alternatives. Will everyone? No, of course not. Fast Food is an indulgence for some, and a way of life for others, but better to offer the choices and capture the market (remember I do own stock in Wendy's). So why can't Wendy's, their shareholders and their consumers all win? Must it be an equation where someone looses? I think not, and I am sure the Parent Group of Wendy's/Arby's, if presented with a way to make money, will jump at a chance to do so. Hell, you can get breakfast (including egg white only) at Subway. Why shouldn't a company like Wendy's grab a piece of that pie? The more people made happier the better.
Wrong. Even the ADA admits a balanced vegan diet is healthy for all people including children and pregnant women. There isn't a single nutrient that I need that I can't get from plant foods.
I miss the plain ol' Taco salad =P Not 'Southwestern,' not 'dressed up,' just... chili and cheese and taco sauce and sour cream slathered on top of a plain salad. I could eat that any time of day. Good stuff.
I wish they'd bring back the spinach/chicken/bacon salad they had several years ago when the Atkins diet was all the rage (not that I was dieting; I just happened to like all the ingredients in the salad). It was SO addictive and yummy!
I hope Wendy's new salads dispense with the iceberg lettuce altogether. Most fast food salads rely on iceberg lettuce as their main ingredient (no doubt because it's cheap). Yuck!
I love Wendy's, but currently am not eating the salads because 3 out of 4 of them have blue cheese on them, this is a bit ridiculous....blegh. Also, on a side note, Wendy's should be a little more gluten free conscientious!
You are right about the blue cheese. Dump the stuff in the garbage. I am not sure the hogs would eat it. I am rarely picky about my food, but the blue cheese can be removed if necessary. The chili, baked potatoes, salads, etc., at Wendy's are outstanding! If I want more choice and have more time, I can go to Old Country Buffet, Golden Corrall, Cracker Barrell, Boston Market, Ponderosa, etc. Wendy's has NOT gone down hill, but it would be nice to have a law passed to stop food chains from buying each other up! Ice cream and donuts is NOT a very logical marriage, unless you deliberately want more obese people in wheel chairs, who cannot control themselves. I will NOT be forced to drink Pepsi, since I am a CocaCola man, but will accept RC as a reasonably good substitute. Pepsi tastes like a combination of horrible chemicals that leaves a terrible taste in your mouth. So, although I am a strong pizza fan, I have had to stop going to Pizza Hut since I cannot get CocaCola there. NO idiot is going to force feed me Pepsi!! "FREE AMERICA," where is the choice??
I would never pay $6 for a salad at any fast food place. For a few dollars more I can get a large plate salad like a Cobb or Grilled chicken Caesar (at least twice as much), and be seated at a nice table in a restaurant. Wendy's, etc. is for a cheap burger and fries. These high priced salads will not do well.
5.99 for a salad is way to expensive for a fast food restaurant. They don't need to make them so big - or at least have 2 sizes besides the $0.99 value salad - have a medium and a large salad to make them more affordable - most of the time they are 85% lettuce and that doesn't cost $5.99 a bowl. Also, for the taco salad, does it have to be with the chili again? Nothing is grosser than soggy lettuce and when you have to pour soup over your lettuce, that makes me want to be sick. Is it so difficult to provide taco meat or just the meat from your chili minus the beans and liquid? I used to be able to order a side salad and a side of chicken for an extra $0.50 and that was just the right size - now they charge $2.50 for the side of chicken making a side salad with chicken $3.50. What a rip. We eat at home for the most part but if I have to eat out, it would be nice to have an affordable salad option.
The Burger Chef fast food chain had salad bars in the early 1970s. It was somewhat limited and was in conjunction with the 'Works' bar for dressing sandwiches. It was very inexpensive, I think it was about 35 cents when introduced. I ate lunch there often when I was in college.
I agree. I used to work at Burger Chef in the 70's and they were one of the first to have a salad bars. These new salads sound yucky and by raising the price on them I know I won't be purchasing them any more! I'll buy the bag of salad at the store and eat at home. Arby's got rid of my favorite salad a long time ago and I quit going there. Maybe that's what will happen at Wendy's too.
Changing the salads is fine but changing the price by $1.00 on the average is not! Nothing was added that justifies the increase. I hope people will refrain from buying to force the price back down to where it should be!!
You are right on with this comment. Fast food is supposed to be about fast food for your value. You can go into many sit down restaurants and have all you can eat soup and salad for $6. I was so excited to try the new apple salad at Wendys, and when I saw the price I walked right back out. I refuse to pay that at a fast food restaurant. I hope this line fails for them. Some of us have to eat healthy items, and it stinks that it cost 3 times as much to eat as people who eat greasy burgers and fries. Boo to you Wendys!
You are right it DOES take a lot to raise meat, let's all go back to hunting like we did almost a million years ago. Do you do realize that it was the introduction of good protein to our diet that allowed our brains to grow into the wonderful organ they are today? You would not have the ability to wax philosophically about the diet of your fellow humans if your ancestors didn't enjoy a buffalo or two.
Not a very good analysis by the research firm since the breakfast daypart is actually down during this recession--a result of less people out and about in the morning due to lost jobs. The lunch and dinner segments are up, a result of trade down from the fast-casual segment. Fast-casual, ie. O' Charleys, Ruby Tuesday, Fridays, etc., is down as a whole anywhere from 12- 15%. Just a little insider information.
I'm sick of vegetarians telling people not to eat red meat. Vegetarians (verifiable) don't live as long as meat eaters. I love animals as well as the next person. Have a cat and a dog. But they are animals. The deer population is so large now because people are frowned upon for hunting them and eating them. They are beautiful, but the herds are more healthy when they are culled by hunters. God created these things for us to eat.
I'm a vegetarian, but I was 100% with you until you said that.
How do you know God's intentions? If God intended for you to eat animals, how come you're all dying of heart attacks from too much saturated fat?
And BTW - science has proven repeatedly and beyond doubt that yes, vegetarians are healthier. They may not have a longer lifespan, but they don't linger for 20 years with debilitating disease and dementia. These beliefs about needing to eat meat are out-dated by decades. Read The China Study for a real and current scientific study.
Still, I don't have a problem with other people choosing how to eat. I just have a problem with people telling me God agrees with them.
When we die of heart attacks before our time, that's just saying that we're going home early. Better to die happy and young than to suffer eating like a rabbit your whole life!
The Wendys near me here in NC (about 2 years since it opened) has had breakfast since opening day. Breakfast sandwiches, biscuts, eggs and ther fare. I agree that is way too much to spend for one of their salads. Fast food businesses have raised prices consistantly for the last 6 years or so. You used to be able to get a decent lunch for under 4 bucks, but not any more.
Don't mean to dis my vegetarian friends but I had the new chicken salad and it is awesome except for the disgusting blue cheese topping which they will leave off if you asked them.In the perfect world I would add a few pieces of applewood bacon but heh, its not a perfect world.
I usually find Wendy's salads to be the best of any fast food salads. I like their Chicken BLT and even occasionally the Chicken Mandarin. But recently I've been getting Arby's Farmhouse salads more often and have really come to like them as much or more than Wendy's salads. My current gripe with Wendy's is that they've dropped their great fish sandwich -- it was the best in the fast food industry. Fast food salads ARE too expensive but since I often can't use up the items in salad before they start going bad, it's a viable option for me. As to the Taco Salad: I buy it, keep the chili for a second meal and add other toppings to make a regular salad. A true taco salad is not a salad with chili poured over top! I will try the new salads.
I don't think Wendy's target market is vegetarians or vegans... Also, one can order a salad sans the meat ingredients...
Until we acknowledge that omniverous humans that have incisors (evolved specifically to eat meat) aren't evil for their meat-eating - perhaps the discussion about eating meat and ecological sustainability won't fall on deaf ears because the veggie only crowd is so busy demonizing meat-eaters while simultaneously denying their own nature...
I went to Wendy's to get a salad not knowing the salads had not only increased in price, but were offering un healthy selections such as BLT COBB. I mean come on if I wanted fried chicken and bacon added to my salad I would have just gotten a sandwich! I asked for it to be special made but to pay $6.00 for the same amount is insane. That was my last trip to Wendy's.
Yeah last time I went to wendy's and ordered a salad and I got a nasty piece of chicken on top of brown, wilty lettuce, it was slimy and gross and I couldn't believe I paid 6 bucks for a salad I couldn't even eat. I threw it away and went to McDonald's and got a salad for 5 bucks and better quality cause they make them fresh everyday. Never going to wendy's for a salad ever again.
There is nothing new here. It's just a salad that has been altered by adding in or taking out different salad ingredients.
People do this at home with their salads al the time. This is nothing more than a fast-food chain using the iNet and the news to promote their franchise and to sucker the people into buying a salad that is easy to make at home and cost a lot less.
I'd like a salad that doesn't have meat that is a real salad and not a side. I think the meat should be an addon instead of put in it. That leaves me out as a vegetarian and so my family doesn't do to Wendy's any more.
Exactly. Thanks for saying what I was going to.
I'd also like a salad that isn't froofy with odd things like Asian flavorings and orange slices. LOL

Here's an idea: STAY HOME AND MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN SALAD.
I'm never, ever, going to go to a fast-food restaurant to order a SALAD.

Cmon: have you ever heard of civil discourse? I suggest that your abusive comments are unwarranted.
You are being manipulated into thinking that the product you are eating is good for you in order to separate you from your money.
There is a reason I have had Cmon on my ignore list for a long time...

Amen. I think it was called the taco supremo salad or something like that. This "baja" salad sucks.
I miss the salad bar some Wendy's used to have. That way you could pick your own ingredients.

Used to love their caesar side salad. Tried the new one. Was VERY disappointed. :(

I can eat a grilled chicken sandwich and chili which is high in fiber (8g)
or baked potato, high in fiber also.
Their salads look pretty good as well.
Wendy's seems to very health conscious for people trying to maintain or lose weight compared to the others. Great job Wendy's.
And they still offer other food if you aren't dieting or want to splurge.
Wish I had seen this before I posted. Glad someone else was paying attention to the details.
I'm not sure where you live, but there is no where here where you can get soup and salad for $6, let alone unlimited.
I remember when Wendy's served breakfast, and it was one of my favorite stops for something quick in the morning. Glad to see it coming back.
I agree
Well, excuse me. I guess I'll just have to go to Taco Bell like all the other enlightened folk to get something authentic from FAST FOOD. =P
And since it's been proven that light meat eaters are healthier than vegatarians, they are often also just lying.
No, it hasn't. But I won't accuse you of "lying," just being misinformed.
A salad for 6 bucks...I don't think so! I'll stay home and make my own salad for alot less!!!
Crystal, you should have taken it back and demanded your money back.
