A majority of states saw their unemployment rates drop in May. But the widespread declines were mainly because people gave up work searches and were no longer counted.
Unemployment falls in 37 states in May
Seeded on Fri Jun 18, 2010 11:27 AM EDT (msnbc.com)

That headline is so misleading!! Come on guys get it together!!
No kidding, it's as misleading as intentional disinformation!
More fitting, Unemployment Figures Look Better as More Workers Abandon Hope for Jobs!!!
Just wait for it.
Some politician or one of their hand puppets, will use these numbers in an upcoming speech or White House press conference to claim the stimulus is working as "Happy Days are Here Again" plays in the background.
The headline should read:
" Thousands run out of unemployment assistance or have given up hope on finding a job completely. Economy is worse off than politicians claim. Nobody with common sense is surprised or finds it unexpected."
These people are still looking for work, they simply have already exhausted their 99 weeks.
The next big news story will be an increase in welfare applications, which will cost taxpayers more to provide than the unemployment benefits did.
OMG!!! Let's all have a party!!! The recessions over......oh wait...
When was the counting changed to only show those that are on unemployment assistance?
That calculation is so far off, it like saying I employ 45 employees but only 13 have got to work for the last 6 months. God that sick We have no idea how many people are unemployed at this time. Why not?
wildfire-
So the Obama administration can lie to you about it, of course.
The media is shameless!
The headline should read:
"More and more people give up trying to find work".
How many people on these boards were lambasted for pointing out the obvious, government stimulus does not work! For every dollar the government spends, abuses, loses, etc... is a dollar that a legitimate business cannot use to grow and expand, creating jobs and prosperity for America.
The sad part is, even with the painfully obvious evidence that the government, just like us, can't spend itself out of debt, people still buy the Obama propaganda. His special interests continue to make trillions at the expense of our future generations' freedom and prosperity. And the masses continue to recite the state run media talking points, blaming Bush and capitalism, and telling those who understand what is going on, they are 'conspiracy theorists' or worse.
I quess this just says it all !!!!!!!
" But the widespread declines were mainly because people gave up work searches and were no longer counted "
Don't you just love slanted statistical in (dis) information..but could we expect anything else?
TOTAL BS scarab, the very same disinformation has been going on for twenty years or more.
Right. A better headline would be:
HOPE FOR JOBS GONE FOR MANY IN 37 STATES
WILDFIRE
"UNDER REAGAN - the way unemployment numbers were calculated by the Dept of Labor Statistics was changed - if you run out your unemployment without actually finding a new job, you are no longer counted, so Reagan's "improvement" of unemployment numbers were mostly due to attrition from the unemployment rolls"
Regrettably it is still being done today
Ho hum...... same BS, different day.
they should pass a law that requires you to define what unemployment means before you can talk about it.
to me it means someone who is over 18 and under 65 who doesnt have a job, want one or not. yeah, nobody would want to publish that figure would they .
...and the "recovery" is right on track. (ha)
MSNBC is a joke.
When unemployment benefits run out people get out and start looking for work. This will change the unemployment numbers dramatically, allowing the politicians and liberal based major media the opportunity to cast the numbers in a favorable light.
This distortion of reality by the press occurs because they are shills for Obama who have jettisoned all pretense of objectivity and accuracy. No wonder so many are losing readers and viewers. Every article you read must be read with the idea that the journalist involved is an Obama lap dog distorting the truth to somehow make the master look good and keep him and his followers in power. Time will tell how long they can continue to fool all of the people.
This administration has been fudging the figures from day one.
Hey... I'm self-employed... with no income. Is that un-employed?
Some years ago I found myself in that same place and I was considered as employed. Like one comment above I agree no matter what nation there should be laws passed to lay down how to calculate those unemployed. Then we would have less rubbish printed and force the mongrels to declare honest, correct figures. They wouldn't publish anything. They are simply using these figures to manipulate the people still playing the stock market (casino) into putting more money to loose.
Let's see how the MSNBC toadies for Obama spin things when the Census workers get their walking papers!
The real rate is now close to 20%. For you who received a public school education, that means 20 out of every 100 are unemployed. That's a really big number, but after September when census jobs end it will go to 25%. Then in January when the humongous tax increases kick in because of the sunset provisons of the Bush tax cuts, a double dip recession will ensue, taking unemployment to about 40%, with no relief in sight. So, all you Obama worshipers, how is that hope and change stuff working out for you? Unemployed, hungry? Eat a wind turbine or a solar panel.
I never understood how the federal government knows that a person gave up their job search.
It's working fine for them they work for the federal government and public schools which are being propped up by the tax payers dime. Our they are on institutionalized welfare so there is no effect for them there. It's a fine day to support Democrats, thats where the stimulus money go's. Public work projects that Unions work in. Great stuff like that.
Figures lie and liers figure
Not to worry. Obama is gonna give every american a big fat Christmas bonus so we can atleast have Christmas. So just hang in there...Christmas is coming soon!
I was unemployed/underemployed in Michigan for 1.5 years. I started a new job this week. Good job with a good salary and benefits. My boss told me they received 800 resumes for two positions w/in the company. I got one of them. Never give up hope! I feel like I won the lottery.
How can this be? Mr. Obama promised the stimulus packages he needed to have pass were in order to prevent Unemployment from rising and to create jobs!!!
Isn't this happening?
Gratz!!! Positive Me!!!
proves a point for me too when i say there is an opening anywhere, they dont run it for more than a week, and when you do apply, there is more than just a few people looking to get that same job.
on a sad note... i know people are giving up left and righ, one did this week. Told his 8 yr old son he might not be there for his birthday, walked into the shed in the back yard and hung himself. The kids B-day was yesterday, the wake is taking place as we speak. This man, came from a long line of hard wprkers, and gave up. Being out of work, nothing, even unemployment coming in, i know its ruff.....but hang in there is all i can say.
so..... thats 20,000 jobs out there for The fiscal year-to-date average of seasonally adjusted weekly insured unemployment, which corresponds to the appropriated AWIU trigger, was 5.097 million. that doesnt even put a scratch on what is needed for there to be any type of inprovment, or even say there has been any to begin with.
http://www.dol.gov/opa/media/press/eta/ui/eta20100816.htm
not looking good by any means. But i must admit, from the time Regan was pres, till about 4 yrs ago, there were jobs.
GUESS WHAT FOLKS?
To all the people trying to say that Obama is trying to hide the unemployment numbers:
the simple, true fact is that the extended unemployment benefits have INCREASED the "unemployment rate, and has prevented millions from disappearing into an artificial black hole.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many of us have been saying since this greatest scam,,,the $TIMULU$,,,was even being discussed,,,this administration has NO FU**ING IDEA what it's doing!
We have WASTED $863 BILLION DOLLARS on "HOPE & CHANGE"! Government has NEVER created wealth. The private sector creates wealth. Government is an expense, every social program and entitlement costs us money. The only thing that will stimulate the economy is JOBS!!!!
WE NEED LONG TERM DOMESTIC EXPORT MANUFACTURING JOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The one thing that really upset me about this article is that my fair State of Michigan has once again lost its #1 standing. First we lose being the Murder Capital of the world, then we lose being the Auto Capital of the world and NOW we can't even claim to be the Unemployment Capital of the world.
DAMN YOU HARRY REID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree - Cutsinger you are a jerk. The headline should be 'The Economy is in such bad shape that people are giving up looking for work.' On top of it, we have Obama and Biden touting this is the Summer of Recovery as they are going to be hiring more government workers. There is no good thing about this either as government workers are paid by TAXING real workers. Then just wait for next year when the health care fiasco taxes start kicking in. We don't have to worry about some country beating us in a war, Obama and the Dems are doing for them.
yeah right, like that's going to happen. face it, there is no way we can compete with China anymore, they are cheaper, and I've seen some stuff made here in the US that is even junkier than it's chinese counterpart and it's twice the price.
we are about to go the way of Britain, so get over yourselves people
Pssst! Hey, yeah you.
You looking for some "hope" or "change?"
I got what ya want right here.
The cost?
For you my friend, a special price, just 863 billion.
A heavy price? No my friend, break it down, what is that, like $4000 for each of you? A bargain I assure you.
Ok, a deal then, here you go.
Whats that? A receipt?
No, when you show up with this "hope and change," people will be so happy, you won't even need a receipt.
No run along you little scamp and make the world a better place with that "hope and change."
Buying Power! Increase demand which will increase the need for hiring. I don't care how you do it. just do it. Give incentives for companies to hire along the way. We don't Need no stinking Democratic or Republican ideals we need American Ideals. Drop your ego's and do what needs to be done. Stop fighting for power and control.
Corporate America = ModernDay Slavery
The Economy is top heavy Stupid! Communities enabled the need for companies and Corporations now if the community is hurting than! Duh!
Or drop minimum wage and make more tents.
Why would you fix the roof when the foundation is caving in?
another msnbc headline that isn't true!!! When are you libs going to wake up to what Obama and his like are doing to this country!!!!!
people might wake up if they ever read a headline that states:
"Republicans have plan to put everyone back to work"
This isn't a liberal disaster it is a bipartisan Corporate Congress running a corporate welfare State.
Pamela, you are absolutely correct. Republican, Democrat= partisan scoundrel and hypocrite.
Robin Williams had it right when he said, they should run for office wearing corporate supporter logos like the NASCAR drivers so we know exactly what corporate interest our vote is supporting!!
oh puhleeeasse, this has been the norm for the last twenty years or more, when the unemployment benefits run out, that person is magically no longer part of the unemployed.
it's not Obama's fault, nor is it Bushes fault since this has been going on for longer than either of them were in office. I'm not even sure how far this does go back, since it has been this way as long as I remember, so that puts it before Reagan.
b dune
people might wake up if they ever read a headline that states:
"Republicans have plan to put everyone back to work"
Should read "Republican have plan to put eveyone back to work, FOR THEM."
How many of you are out of work? Are you in the library posting? Gloom and Doom - that's all you have to offer? What outrages you so much about this administration trying to create jobs, when they didn't lose them? If only ONE job was created, it's a good thing. How has unemployment affected those that are employed? Yet you're the most negative. Why is it so hard for you people to have ANY KIND of faith. If that's the way you feel, so be it - but the only person being affected is YOU. Stop misplacing your anger. It seems to be easier to be negative - I guess. I think anger takes too much energy.
I want to wake up - but I want you to give me facts to wake me up to prove that statement you just made. Otherwise, don't make the statement. What is it you know about Obama that I don't know? Please - enlighten me. Have you studied, researched, saw and acknowledged all that he has achieved since he came on the scene - or are you like the rest of the baggers - Rush said it - so it must be so? NOT.
Are you employed, bcarol8? If so, I'm glad. I'm employed, too. But I know how it is to be laid-off, and have mounting bills. Don't judge people so harshly when they have a right to their opinion.
One of the reasons unemployment dipped in so many states in May is because a lot of census jobs were filled in April. The article says nothing about that.
bcarol8,
Waking up means actually looking at your surroundings, to see what's REALLY going on. Not relying on others interpretations of those surroundings.
I don't need the so-called facts other provide me, when I can just quietly observe, and form my own thoughts about it all.
"A total of 431,000 new jobs were added across the country in May, the biggest gain in a decade. Still, the surge came from 411,000 temporary census jobs. Private-sector job growth slowed significantly."
They did briefly acknowledge the Census skewing of the figures.
If ONE job created it's a good thing? For a cost of $4.5 TRILLION in debt to future generations? Most people seem to care more than you do, that is why they are mad. You wonder why we have no faith? Look at the lies and propaganda that is shoved in our faces every day. Adding insult to injury rarely puts people in a good mood.
Glad that some of you do read the article before posting. They admitted that the surge was due to the temporary jobs added. In the next few month we'll see the jobs drop and the increase again. No people have not given up job searches. No one I know can afford to do that. What they don't have is any more benefits. The 1st wave already hit hard. That why the banks are happy, they going to get more homes and land. It'll be in the new in next few months. This will happen again as the 2nd large wave run out this month and next. Even if they extend the benefits to Nov. and since they dragging their feet on it. Most people it won't help them to keep their homes, but maybe feed them a little longer. It's been posted before . This situation is only going to get worse in the next six month. Those with jobs now better start planning. Don't ever thing your safe from this.
What outrages you so much about this administration trying to create jobs, when they didn't lose them?
BCarol... if this administration was actually trying to create sustainable, private sector jobs, then that would be good. But it isn't. I wants to create a welfare state of government workers. If they were serious about creating jobs, they would extend the Buch tax cuts that expire at the end of the year so business know they will have the cash to hire. They would also not enact a six month moratorium on offshore drilling. Yes the disaster is horrible but putting more people out of work is not the answer. There is a significant portion of Texas, Louisiana, Alaska, Alabama, Mississippi economies that rely on American off shore drilling. It goes far beyond just the rig workers but all the support functions. The companies that handle the logistics to supply the rigs, etc. All these people will be out of jobs as well.
Do you also thing Cap in Trade will creat jobs? It won't. When corporations have to pay more taxes they will simply move overseas. Utilities will be faced with hire operating costs and pass that cost onto us. Our energy costs will greatly increase and lead to even less consumer economic activity. Without people having money to buy products which drives the economy, there will be no need to hire additional employees and unemployment will continue to remain high.
They would also repeal the HCR Act. Its already been shown their budget numbers were off and it will not be deficit nuetral. Now its being shown that 51% of currrent health care plans will not meet the government standers under the act. In order to meet these standards employers will have to beef up the plans costing them more money and causing them not to hire or lay off more employees.
Our anger is the fact that those of us who are employed will be paying for those unemployed through our tax contributions. That is where it affects us. I am able to supplement my income through dividend payments on stock that I both worked very hard to buy and some I inherited. Beginning in Januray, the tax rate on this income is going from 15% to 39%. Thats an additional 24% of that income that I will not have to spend in the economy. This is the one of the Bush tax cuts that will end. My grandmother lives off her dividen checks from the stock my grandfather accrued while working at Heinz for over 55 years. Now she'll lose a significant part of her income. She is not wealthy by any means and depends on this income as the cost of living has increased far more than her social security benefits that she recievs.
This administration is after one thing only and that is absolute power over this country. And just because we disagree with Obama's agenda, does not mean we get all our ideas from Rush, Hannity, Beck, etc. Some of us are actually intelligent enough to research the issues, educate ourselves and make up our own minds.
That why the banks are happy, they going to get more homes and land.
I can tell you that banks are not happy getting more homes and land. It is very expensive to the banks to have to own real estate. They must pay the taxes on them. Maintain them, pay utilities. All real estate assets owned by the bank are considered liabilites more than assets since they drain cash rather the create revenue for the bank. This doesn't even take into account the loss the bank incurs when the home is sold at a discount.
The problem is that if there is a job created it will be working for the government not the privatily owned company they just are not hiring anybody for good reason.
That's the point so many on the right want to demonize the government, when it's this administation that is looking to keep folks afloat, while the private sector choose to lay off and not hire people so they can leave the level of wealth in this country at 1%. The congressman in Texas apoligizing to a private business over assurance of compensation to those affected by their disaster is appauling, it only shows how the right is for profits over people. At least there's an effort, I appreciate that the unemployment numbers dipped a little, better than it continuing to go up at the rate it was.
b dune,
The Republican do have a plan it's called massive tax cuts for business...It worked in the past it will work now..The only stumbling bock is getting rid of Obama...I can't wait till 2012,so we can send him and posse packing...
Get real Your a Fuc$ ing joke and Gregl you hit the nail on the head. Have a great weekend.
Tax cuts have never worked to create jobs. If they had, we should have alot of jobs since the Bush tax cuts are still in effect.
Pres I almost stooped to your level, but what in my post make me a joke, please speculate, so I can understand the vulgar of your vocabulary. All this division is only to blockade proper wages, a simple ploy to conserve wealth. I thought this was a capitalistic society where all can make it, not where the amount of those who are wealthy is stuck at 1%.Come on so called conservatives, when is what you conserve gonna help the people, instead of special interest, to you guys being socialized is bad, until a major corp needs it.
I love it. On one hand you have Joe Biden making the rounds with a big smile on his face saying how great the stimulous is working and ll the jobs it created. On the other hand, you have Harry Reid slamming the GOP for not voting with him to provide unemployment benefits for all the millions of Americans out of jobs. So which is it folks?
USARogue:
Dude, I know this is off topic, but "
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is getting reaaaaalllly oooooolllllldddd!!!
spiritdance, it's also a good indicator of rogues lack of comprehension.
This is not misleading. It states that the unemployment rate drop due to the fact that the unemployed gave up looking for jobs or stop receiving employment checks. This number reflects the total unemployed looking for jobs not the totaled unemployed.
Then why call it the "Unemployment Numbers" if we're not counting the real number of unemployed?
Do we care about the number of Americans who would be willing and able to work if there were any jobs for them or how many hold out hope something will turn up?
And how in the heck do they come up with that number? I'm unemployed; no one called me to find out if I gave up looking!
pamela, read my post 2.5
this has been how they count the unemployed for many years.
lawence,
Really? I suppose all those who can't receive benifits because they ran out, don't count anymore?
Wake up.
the number reflects absolutely nothing except the number of unemployed people that can still get unemployment benefits.
Larry,
How in the world does the fed government know someone quit looking for work? I know people out of work for over 2 years who look everyday. This is a blatant case of the worst president in US history lying to his own people. C'mon 2012.
The numbers have dropped because all of those unemployed can't file until Congress approves the bill.
Meanwhile, they sit back and think the economy is doing better. They should engage their brains and realize they will be paying out $'s anyway. It's only a matter of time when people start stealing for food and end up in jail. Heck, three hot's and cot! At least they'll have food and roof over their head.
I wonder how much that will cost Congress!
Unemployed-1900345
Yes, the number dropped because not all of the unemployment is filed until Congress approve the bill. So, this number cann't reflect the exact fact at all. We don't know exactly there are how many people stay at home, not to find job. If the number is big, the unemployment would be still very large. Thus, "the unplioyment falls in 37 states" doesn't mean anything. So, we cannot walk on air, because its too early. What the government need is a more meticulous work to get the most accurate statistic-a statistic can say something.
I have no idea why many people stop searching for jobs. Do they just stay at home or go for further education or professional training? Are they trying to carve out their own way by setting their own business? What the fact is, we all cann't tell. So, if the things you worry would happen, we don't know ethier. Things may not be so bad. Who knows.
So....they're still UNemployed. Which explains why the unemployment rate went to 9.7% and the UNDERemployment rate went from 17.3% to 19.1% in May.
It's not an employment recovery - it's an unemployment cover UP.
Do you REALLY care? I mean REALLY.
That's the funny thing about statistics. 58.4% of all statistics are made up. lol
macaddict - link please.
The stats I quoted are taken right out of reports - several, not just one and not just one source or type of source.
bcarol -
yes. My questions to you are, do you? If not, why not?
It continues to amaze me how absolutely stupid these reporters are. I guess they serve a purpose by preaching to the lemmings, but the level of credibility has hit an all time low.
Is there no integrity left in reporting?
Valhalla Phil
THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO SOURCE MORE INFORMATION. Iff you read only headlines you might be mislead. Even unintentionally. Don't be spoon fed. I can't claim to know the truth but I can look for it.
Of course the "party of NO" has no answers. Just whine and complain. Makes me sick
And your party isn't making people sick?
I think what makes people sick is the emptiness of insisting that the private sector is the mechanism for creating jobs of their own volition. Witness the "jobless recoveryz' of the recent past. Everone clamors about jobs and the market hasn't responded. Seems to me that even paying someone to stand around enables them to put some currency back into the system where the big dogs will suck it up again. The problem is they prefer to accumulate wealth. With stimulus money the private sector has not rallied the job market. Rather, they have probably done their best to pocket as much as they can because that's what they do best. BTW, my "party" isn't making anyone sick. My party is the people of any stripe. I am an American first.
Actually, they did have an answer. One which has proven to be the correct one.
Don't throw nearly a trillion dollars at a problem when it won't fix anything.
Lesson learned. Hopefully.
Kedbob7 - are you saying people should get paid to stand around and do nothing? Isn't that unemployment benefits? I get your point.
disjointed...define "proven" and then demonstrate how your post above is correct.
disjointed:
Actually, the party of No didn't have an answer. They left Obama with a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit in January, 2009.
Government spending is a Republican trait. Reagan upped the military budget and expanded the government by twenty fold by the time he left. Clinton actually reduced government. Bush again upped the military budget and spend 1 trillion in Iraq with nothing to show for it, and several hundreds of billions in Afghanistan, with almost a quarter of it embezzled by the Afghanis. And when it comes time to bail out the financial sector, Bush authorized 680 billion in bail out money without any requirement or timeline for them to pay it back.
The only thing the Republicans are good at is balking when it comes to unemployment insurance, health care, etc. Anything that is good for the American public, and not the corporations. When it was suggested that bailout money be used to help mortgage holders to pay their bills, Republicans balked. They offered no resistence to the financial bailout, but not to the people paying their bills. When it comes time to pass health care legislation, they balked. They offered no resistence to expand legislation intended to let health care providers pick and choose who to drop and make it almost impossible for a person to sue for insurance issues.
The most recent example, Republicans actually apologized to BP.
All one has to do is read headlines such as this one day after day, week after week to see the proof. If one wanted to follow the line the Obots throw out one could make a weak argument for the Stimlus/Omnibus bills. But they would be exactly that, a weak argument. If anything they only delayed (for a brief period of time)the inevitable and compounded our troubles by delaying a true recovery and adding to our debt.
Debt destroys prosperity.
The Republicans unanaimously voted against the Stimulus. Remember? Party of No? The problem I have with the leadership and their army of drones is they (intentionally) ignored the lessons from the '30's in an attempt to seize power through reward. Same thing FDR did.
But you tell me. How long should a downturn in the economy last? Do you think Bernanke, Dodd, and Frank has an answer?
Disjointed,
Can you also prove that this "stimulus" money has worked?
I have yet to see anything remotely that resembles recovery.
Leftfield, you have no idea what your talking about. The 1.3 Trillion dollar deficit that was "left" to Obama was left by the Democrats who created the bill in congress. Dems have had control of congress since 2006. Congress creates budgets, not the president, and in fact, I believe Obama was a senator at the time. Furthermore, 1.3 Trillion is only part of it, you have additional auto bailouts, and a 1 Trillion dollar stimulus fiasco. Obama has created more debt in his first two years of office than Bush did in EIGHT. And the two highest deficits for bush was his last two years, just so happened those were the years dems controlled congress and the purse strings. As far as Clinton is concerned, he only reduced government size due to the Republicans contract with America beginning in 1994. It was a republican congress that balanced the budget during that time, not Clinton, again, congress controls the purse strings. By the time Obama is done with his first term, he will most likely double the national debt and permanently enslave future generations of Americans under unbearable interest obligations.
Leftfield - One Repub from Texas apologized to Bp for what he thought (right or wrong doesn't matter) shake down, and now he speaks for ALL Repubs.
Nancy Pelosi said you have to pass bill to find out what is in them, hence by your logic all Democrats refuse to read bills before passing them.
Leftfield is a great name ..........you are way out in Liberal left-field...The last four president's all together have not spent what this one inept non-American Odumba has..What ever the costs to the American taxpayers is to push his Odumba-Soro's Agenda on this country is exactly what we will have to endure..One and a half trillion Obamacare blunder..Hundreds of billion's spent to create jobs???????? That's been spent but NO jobs created!!!!!!!In fact more jobs lost.(.showing a huge gain because of government hiring of temporary census workers) 4 week long temporary jobs???w/ no benefits...Odumba claims 431,000 jobs created and 411,000 lasted four weeks or less???????Around 800 billion wasted on the Stimulas package. 154 million of it just given out by Chris Dodd for building additions to an Indian casino that profitted over a billion dollars last year. "earmarks" Billions spent on unemployment costs without any hope or help of finding people real jobs..Billions being spent in Afghanistan. While our troops fight under rules of nonengagement" Where record numbers of our soldiers are dying every week because they can do nothing but stand in the open and take enemy fire!!!!!!! Yes the conservatives and the independants are baulking at the huge deficets the Odumba administration is running up. They understand that the liberal's are destroying America for us and everyone in the future..Oh and throw another trillion and a half and the lost of thousands of more jobs..when he forces his "Cap and Trade"agenda on us..Add all of this to our 13 Trillion plus we already owe in National Debt......
TAXES!!TAXES!!DO you really believe that These liberal fools in Washington really care anything about preserving the quality of life for us,our familys, and our family's future family's in this great country??????????? Hell No........
WE Conservatives and Independant's can stop this BS in November..please get out and vote...Vote the liberal incumbant's out of office..all of them...It could be that easy ..Odumba's already thrown them under the bus-------We just need to finish the job in November......................Liberalism is truly a Disease..Vote in November to stop this infection.
leftie
Typical pick and choose fact finding by a liberal. As if no one should ever doubt what you say as truth. Although fiscal years run from Oct 1 through Sept 30 I'm guessing you got your figure using TARP. Something by everyone's accounting was generally successful and has largely been paid back. The govt is claiming they made money off of it. Go figure.
Now if you are taliking about all of the 2009 fiscal year here is an article which gives an explanation. Enjoy.
http://preview.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aA8lChe4zUQU
You really should bring yourself into 2010. We have an ecological disaster that will eventually cost the U.S. taxpayer untold billions (yes, you heard it here first, maybe). A war with no clear mission that Obama continues to escalate at the cost of 10 billion a month. A health care bill whose price tag goes up every day. A corrupt govt who wishes to impose even more taxation on a weak economy through a misguided(?) energy policy. A failed immigration policy which costs us about a billion dollars a day.
Yet the Obots want to live in the past and dredge up old ghosts to compensate for their lack of size.
It's about leadership now. Not a pissing contest on who slept the most.
macaddict
no, i cannot. because it has not worked. nor did I claim it did.
Ron Paul is practically the only person in Washington trying to expose what is going on. He is trying to bring accountablitity to the Federal Reserve by haing an audit so we can find out what happened to our money. The people are not paying attention to what is really going on.
The pentagon misplaced 2 trillion dollars of our money and they have not be held accountable at all they are just saying, '"oh well that's how it goes"'. Most people don't even know about much less are even angry about it. geezzzzeeee.
Ron Paul is practically the only person in Washington trying to expose what is going on.
----------------------------------------------------
It's been like that for 20 years. Stimulus never works, it just bails out the ultra-wealthy.
Unemployment claims 450,000(yesterday) but falls in 37 states today. These guys don't have a clue about what's going on.
Yeah, don't bother yourself with details.
Shawn, is this what you were referring to?

It seems very telling that first time unemployment claims rose last month and the main reasons why the number of people receiving unemployment benefits fell were because 1) their benefits expired 2) they've given up looking and 3) temporary census jobs.
It is obvious to anyone looking at the whole picture that 'recovery' (at least in the private sector) has yet to begin. Five of my friends have been laid off in past 2 weeks and the company I work for (directly linked to housing market) is looking for further cost saving reductions. In the past 2 years our work force has already been reduced by more then 2/3 (and this is a HUGE company - 2/3 represents a lot of individuals).
they said loud and clear. it may have fallen because people gave up searching for work.usually i call their propaganda bull @!$%#. only this time they put a ring of truth to it.
There is no ring of truth, nowhere did I see in this article the percentage that fell off because there are no more benefits for them to receive.
A majority of the unemployed are looking for any job. Those who claim they are holding out, holding out for what? My sunday paper had 3 pages of employment, and if you don't speak spanish....less than one page.
People who made 100k plus ARE applying for $10/hr jobs. Thats about all thats out there in my city anyway.
I say give them more benefits, because it IS cheaper than providing them welfare.
Excuse me China, can we borrower more money to pay people to do nothing?
How about instead of contining to extend unemployment, we ask them to do work for their money, you know helping out socity? I know its a novel idea. How about picking up of roads, cutting the grass on the side of the highways, helping others find jobs, volunteering at local school, or homeless shelters, animal humane societys?
About the only job around my area is working for the local soup kitchen other than that your SOL...
Talk about a sign of the times.
Tom living in a dream world. Try getting out to cut grass on side road. Already covered by state works and the convicts. Thing getting bad when ya see Mexican taking over the grave diggers jobs. Yes I can't even get a job on a farm now because they tell me they would have to pay me min. wage and these Mexicans will work for half that . I worked on a farm from age 5 to age 18 before I got a long term company job with benefits.
Maybe my point wasn't clear. I am not against unemployment benefits, I am just not for extending them any further. Isn't it 99 weeks?
What I was trying to say was while collecting unemployment maybe people should be asked to contribute to society in other ways? Picking up trash is only one job, volunteering at schools, daycares, hospitals, ect..
I asked a few of my friends and relatives (wife being one) while they were on unemployment if it would make them look harder for a job or possibly except a less paying job, if they had to actually do work for there unemployment benefits like pick trash up on the side of the road, or help out the elderly or disabled and just about all of them said "HELL YES" they weren't picking up trash.
Tom-Plymouth, part of the reason would be that it would cost a lot of money to do thorough background checks for "volunteers at schools, daycares, hospitals", etc.
Unemployment benefits never equal what a worker was earning - even after taxes. Those receiving benefits are looking to replace the income they lost initially. At some point, they have to start looking at jobs which pay less and if offered one, they might have to take it or lose those benefits.
In some places, there are hundreds of applicants for even the lowest-paying jobs. One gets that job and hundreds are still looking. That doesn't mean they aren't looking - quite the contrary - or there wouldn't be hundreds of apps in the first place.
Yes, 90-some weeks (I'm not clear on the exact number, either) is extremely generous from one perspective, but from the perspective of people looking for work and not being hired - or even granted interviews, which is the case for so many older workers - unemployment is a lifeline.
As for making people on unemployment pick up garbage or whatever other nasty, disgusting example posters come up with (in lieu of suggesting doing better jobs just because someone is receiving some benefit), how come those cities haven't already hired people full time, with benefits, to do those jobs? If jobs are open, employers should be hiring. Nor should someone with X set of skills and abilities be automatically relegated to doing jobs with Y skills. Many choose the jobs they do - or DID have - because of physical or health constraints. To insist they do something they are not physically or medically capable of would be a form of discrimination by the state.
BTW, Lake Forest, IL, posted a job for garbage collector that paid either $58K+ or $68K+ WITH benefits in 2002. So, if it insisted that someone on unemployment, which maxes out at somewhere around $20K a year (IF someone was earning a VERY good living before being laid off) would the city run into a conflict with the Equal Pay Act of 1963?
Folks, the "99 weeks" that gets used quite a lot is by no means guaranteed to everyone on unemployment. Right now, with Congress not extending the EUC benefits, many people unemployed are only getting their 26 weeks, some have only gotten to maybe one or two of the EUC tiers available. Two of the federal EUC tiers are tied to states with unemployment rates of 8.5% or higher. Which means people in those states with unemployment lower than 8.5% won't get the final two tiers of EUC. As for the state's Extended Benefit program, which is part of the 99 week formula, many states today are officiallly "off" the EB program due to federal funding. EB, by istelf, is a patchwork of some states having it, and others not having it. Currently, only 15 states today still have EB enacted. So before complaining about 99 weeks of unemployment, etc. think about a large majority of people who won't even come close.
The unemployment rate has been tweaked and twisted so much, it almost has become irrelevant. When you don't even include people who are on extended unemployment benefits in the unemployment count, what value are the numbers? Politicians and economists can manipulate the numbers all they want, but those of us on the front lines know the real story.
I think we can benefit by using positive slants on news. Negativity hampers progress/recovery. I think big business is using the situation to further their efforts to crush workers, the labor from which wealth arises only to be skimmed.
Considering the first part of your post, which Goebbels would whole heartedly agree with, this seems pessimistic. Not to mention absolutely wrong. Why would that devil, "big business", wish to do this?
So you want the media/government to treat you like an imbicile instead of giving you the facts? If they were forced to report the truth maybe then they would work a little harder to make reality less "negative". Keep on drinking the kool-aid, that will really help fix things.
this is not a new concept. been around for at least 1/2 a century. the less the public knows, the better.
The average unemployment rate for the 8 Clinton years was 5.2%. The average unemployment rate for the 8 G.W. Bush years was 5.3%. Under both Clinton and Bush unemployment hit lows of around 4.5%, and Bush was able to deal with the recession that was starting as he took office by keeping unemployment to a high of 6.3%, in spite of having to deal with the 9/11 attacks. To suggest that financial conservatives and moderates in both political parties do not have policies that promote a stong economy does not match the facts. Obama and his liberal supporters have an anti-business agenda and therefore anti-economic growth, and that is why companies are not hiring and the economy is not in a strong recovery mode.
bill clinton created jobs by funding dollars to hire police, fire, emergency jobs, police specifically which significantly reduced crime numbers in major cities.
we're not going to see new jobs in the private sector until new ventures and the jobs they create start new manufacturing and production. plain and simple.
it's science and tech renaissance time for this country. get your kids educated, it's their only chance of survival.
The title of the article is misleading. It should say "Unemployment falls in 37 states due to people losing hope and no longer being listed as unemployed." The title makes it sound like good stuff is happening, when its the complete opposite.
So...how is that change stuff working out for you liberals? Cause it sure isn't working out for the rest of America.
Yeah, Bush and his party certainly made changes. Are ya feeling them? You reap what you sow. At the very least, the present administration should be allowed time passing to see what the results will be. Until then your ilk are just sticks in the spokes.
Obama got some good money from Goldman sacks and BP, yeah he is good at that.
Kedbob7 - REALLY? REALLY?
You think Obama's plan to make everyone a government employee is a plan? A job creation plan? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
The government does not create jobs ... this is a sham and next moth again (as MSNBC always proclaims) there will be an "unexpected" or "shocking" increase in the number of unemployed ...compliments of the census.
Figure it out ... the tax scheme in place + health care = NO REAL BUSINESS for the foreseeable future.... Obama can't hire enough people (which are nothing more than added debt in case you don't realize that) to solve any employment issue. PERIOD.
Allowed time passing to see what the results would be?! Seriously??!?!?! I never expected the economy to be righted overnight, but it seems to me that for the past year and a half the only thing this adminsitration has done is create an environment AGAINST job creation.
TARP (granted it was before obama took office) was supposed to free up credit from the banks. Didn't work. (even though it is getting mostly paid back)
Stimulus was supposed to prime the economy in order to get us back in track. The jobs it did actually create are only temporary jobs that will go away when the money is gone. (each of those jobs cost us what, half a million dollars?) Didn't work.
Credit card reform was supposed to help us regular people from getting screwed by the credit card companies. The CC companies were given almost a YEAR to get their last screwing in before the bill went into effect. Didn't work. (anyone else have their citibank and amex go from 6 to 20% for no reason?)
Cash for clunkers was supposed to jump start the auto industry. It ended up turning into a big grab for some govt money, costed twice as much as originally planned, and it compressed 3 months of auto sales into one month. Didn't work
Health care is supposed to allow those who can't get insurance to be able to get it. The jury is still out on that one, but looking at how the cost is being revised upwards and the fact that is STILL nothing to limit how much insurance companies and big pharma can charge us. I say that it isn't going to work either. And even if it did do a little bit of what they promised, you are talking about helping 10% of the country at the expense of 85% (this will not help 5% at all).
Cap and trade, if passed, will force increased taxes and fees on industry and business in the form of carbon credits, their expenses will rise, they will not hire, and they will pass the cost on to us. I'd say it wont work. (whos going to ask china for their carbon credits?)
And you say they need more time?! For what? I think they have done enough damage already.
man what a misleading headline. i know what they are doing though. they just want all their headlines to be pro obama... obama turns corner on oil spill, unemployment down in 37 states... its all liberal headline propaganda.
You would never read Obama dines on caviar at white house concert honoring himself and his wife featuring Paul McCartney while gulf oil spill reaches day 57 and "true" unemployment hovers near 20%.
Out right lies are being fed to the media and they are glad to report those lies. All manufacturing sectors are still moving operations to China and are not bring back any jobs, so where do you come from the unemployment has reduced across all these states. Walmart and McDonald does not pay the bills and if you cannot pay the bills, you have no home and if you have no job that pays enough to have a home, you are not paying taxes. So keep the lies out of the media, you cannot pump your stock deals forever and survive, you are little by little, cutting your throats.
I think unemployment will continue to remain at the level it is now. Companies have learned how to operate leaner in the wake of this crisis, and have discovered they had a lot of fluff and b.s. jobs that were killing their bottom line.
This comes to mind...
Why would you put this headline out there, and on top of the web page? If you're talking about the individual state unemployment rate, the rate will go down when still-unemployed people move into Federal extended benefits. Knucklehead.
Boy does Obama suck ...
Let's make republicans the only unemployeed. They can kiss BP's & Limbaugh's azz for jobs anyway, I'm sure they'll help them. Remember this: 95% of all jobs outsourced to China, etc. were/are outsourced by republican voting and/or major contributing management types. The same is true of tea party members as well.......that's why they love ponzi schemes, crooked banks, overseas slave labor, meaningless wars, outed CIA agents, kennyboy management, Heckva a job brownies, trillion dollar haliburtoned meaningless wars, etc. Vote republican to die young and unemployeed.....but hey.......Jesus loves ya!
Republicans fight the wars that liberals reap the benefits of ...
Really? By refusing to enter into discussion about anything that isn't their idea in Congress? Yup, don't do the job you're elected to and paid for, line your pockets with millions from businesses and private enterprise. I'm unemployed - I want that job! What? Can't have it because I have honesty and integrity? Rats!
WRONG..pretzelchoked.. Bill Clinton was responsible for NAFTA and Al (the loser) Gore cast the deciding vote. 1996. That is what started the mass exodus of jobs from our country........
Misleading headline indeed. More spin from this administration.
Now the extension of unemployment benefits has been soundly defeated this will allow for huge drops in reportable unemployment....Oh Goodie!
Maybe you geniuses can read some of the actual federal reports instead of the press releases.
The BLS numbers include 215000 jobs created by small businesses the government can't prove exist or prove hired anyone. Last year, the number was 185000 per month and then, at the end of the year, they announced it was an "oops" and deleted all the fictitious jobs. So this year, they add even more of them and you go along with the charade.
Removing those jobs, the private sector was negative 200000 for May, 2010 and the only job growth was in government and temporary workers.
There has been 3 (possibly 4) federal emergency unemployment extentions. Most people ran out of unemployment benefit payments starting in April/May 2010 because the Republic decided not to provide additional funding. Weekly funding disbursements are based on prior income levels meaning the well runs dry for different families at different times. Former middle-class working Americans who were in the emergency unemployment extention programs ARE NOT counted in the base number used to track unemployed Americans. We don't exists... we are now below the poverty line. We are homeless... We are now the new under-employed "little people"... I've cried many nights about my losses, I'm very worried about our nation economic troubles which will eventually lead to another great depression.
Was it not just yesterday that MSNBC reported an "unexpected" rise in unemployment claims? Now today everything is coming up roses. The folks at MSNBC wouldn't know the truth if it sat in their laps and called them momma. The most dangerous part of their on-going disinformation campaign is that it gets the sheeple started on the "damn Democrats", "damn Republicans" rants and obscures the real problem which is the "damn government". Our elected keepers ... errr I mean... leaders are crooks, thieves, and liars to the last man and woman. Party means nothing, they all have a common goal, keep themselves in power and their friends rich, that's it. Their votes are for sale to the highest bidder, they have no convictions (unless you count criminal convictions) and no morals to speak of. This situation reminds me of the farmer and his hands arguing about who started the fire as the barn burns down instead of getting some buckets and putting it out and worrying about the blame later. In order to win the conflict one must first identify the opponent and, from what I can gather from reading a lot of these posts, we have a long way to go in that respect. I would hope at some point people will realize that we are ALL victims of an out of control government and the guy you voted for is just as guilty as the guy you voted against. The people are nothing more than pawns in these people's chess game and they have us at check. Checkmate is right around the corner if we don't get our heads our of our a$e$. Willie's Wisdom: If we all just continue to do what we did, we can only expect that we'll get what we got.
Reminds me of the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result
They do have a clue at what is going on, the media in this country is not reporting to what is really happening. The socialists have taken over and we will be given dis-information of what is actually happening here.
When a news organization states in a headline that 37 states sees a drop in un-employment because the people looking for work have been dropped from un-employment rolls due to lack of jobs that is good news since they have reported a drop.
This is all about power being weld by the socialist dumocraps they got it and you don't. Get it.....
As other's have said, people have given up looking for a job so they aren't being counted. That or get a temp job working for the census.
The reason the U.S. is in economic decline is that the U.S. has stopped producing products to sell to the world. The big banks and corporations have figured out that it is more profitable to ship jobs to the poorer nations and merely sit back and collect income from their finance capital which they have provide to these debtor nations. This in-turn has caused industrial stagnation and unemployment here at home which can only get worse as time goes by. Corporate America and wall-street continue to rake-in staggering amounts of money/profits while the American working men and women continue to sink farther into poverty and unemployment. Wake up working people of America!! How long are you going to sit on your ass and allow this to continue?
