History will judge Obama on his accomplishments. I haven't seen a complete failure yet by Obama, but the GOP . . . complete and total failure to do anything.

I think this is fantastic - I am conservative, Libertarian, and have been highly critical of Obama and his liberal leaders.

This is a clear shift to the right, one which I don't believe, but if he follows through and makes it happen I will applaud him as it will help us become more energy independent, which will positively impact our economy.

This is one of the very few times that I agree with something that Obama is doing. It's a shame that it took a year to get to it though; that's a one year delay in easing our dependence on foreign oil. I'd also like to see a clause stating that these companies also have to match a certain percentage of the money spent on oil discovery/drilling on alternative fuel research/development.

We went off the gold standard in 1971 - then, in 1974, Henry Kissinger (aw, yeah - that would be the GOP in office then, but it really didn't matter) went to the OPEC nations and said something to the effect that the United States is going to make you very rich. We are going to quadruple the price of oil but, in return, you will sell your oil only in American dollars and you will put your dollars in our Wall Street banks so they will have LOTS to loan other countries because this meant that everyone in the world wanting to purchase oil from OPEC had to do so in US dollars. Suddenly the price of oil quadrupled and the other nations didn't have enough money to buy it, so they had to borrow the money from the Wall Street banks. That put everybody around the world in debt to the Wall Street banks and that was the beginning of their control.

Now they blatantly pay off politicians to assure they are not regulated. Every nation on the face of this earth (except Argentina) is indebted to these monsters. When they tried to break the hold of those monster banks, Gordon Brown (of the UK) named Iceland a terrorist state - Iceland, for God's sake - so he could go in and pull their assets and bring them to their economic knees. Anyone who refuses to play the game is threatened with a world-wide trade embargo, so all nations (except, again, Argentina) play their game - turning over the assets of their nations to these private bankers.

In W's last year in office the OPEC nations decided to bring us to our knees by refusing to accept US dollars for oil - the economic collapse was the end result. President Obama is trying to make us self-sufficient and more power to him for his effort. Unfortunately it may be that those dedicated lawmakers in DC will block his efforts so they can continue to get their OPEC payoffs. Some things never change.

I find it hard to believe the President is open to this without some concessions from some high ranking Senators concerning the cap and trade legislation. If he starts the ball rolling on the oil rigs AND gets no legislation through the Senate on carbon emissions, I would call this a failed first two years. No public option, no bank regulations, no carbon emissions plan.

I'm all for this but I heard from different sources that we wont see the benefits until the year 2020 and the oil in that region is only enough to last a little over one year at our present rate of consumption. Has anybody else heard this?

Spend the money on a program that starts decentralizing the US energy system. We need to give massive tax credits for any home or business that installs solar systems. If we had a 25% energy savings on 10% of American homes and businesses we would be able to cut off all middle-east oil. The jobs created in the immediate would be huge as would the energy savings.

chris - The petroleum lobby held back ALL efforts to develop alternate energy sources. We could have had hydrogen fuel cells, compressed natural gas engines, high performance batteries, and otheer inovations, but all of this research was stopped and prevented by the petroleum interests so they could sell their products and make huge profits. They knew that oil would run out, but wanted to pursue their power and greed. All politicians have been pressured and paid off by that industry. It's not Republicans or Democrats that are at fault. It isn't too late. It has taken the election of a strong, intelligent President to force exploration of oil and develop alternate sources. Obama has gone against his party's base and should be applauded for his bravery in the face of corporate and political pressure.

Sorry but that's a big fat lie. People may have forgotten that batteries have been around for over a century. It's not like they are new and innovative. Eaking out more performance is a tough job and depends on technologies not even related to battery technology that weren't even available a few years ago, (nano technology for instance.).

Solar panels are another technology that is still not quite ready. Many idiots believed that Carter had the right idea decades ago without even considering the technology available at the time. Even twenty years ago the price was $10/W, (in 1990 dollars!), and now are still $2/W and not viable without major incentives. Again, their recent advances depend on technologies not related directly to solar power and certainly not available even a couple of years ago.

I worked all my live in technologies like this and the horse power just wasn't there. Saying anything like Li-ion batteries, and printed solar panels could have been done even a decade ago, is like saying we could have had a 2GHz laptop for $500 a decade ago. NOT POSSIBLE! Wsihfull thinking and conspiracy theories just don't equal fact.

You are doing the math for solar with the idea of adding it into our existing system. I am talking about decentralizing the power by adding solar panels to 10-25% of American Homes and Businesses. Solar power at site has become very efficient because the kilowatt loses are almost zero when used directly at site. Day time use needs no battery improvements. It is night time use when you need battery storage and through most of the year night time electric use is far lower. Like I said all we need to do is cut in to our power by 25% with 10% of the populace and we can eliminate all Middle Eastern oil. Solar can do this we just need the US Government to make the push with tax credits.

Damn I wish we didn't have cloudy days where the solar panels are installed, or windless days on the windfarm. Those issues are a detriment to the propaganda of windmills and/or solar panels.

The Kyoto agreement, which he did not sign, is now recognized as having been flawed in that it allowed the largest polluters to continue to pollute. There are already major plans in place. Those plans are practiced every day offshore Texas and Louisiana. Environmental response teams practice response drills on a regular basis.

Obama went to school in Indonesia where dual citizenship is not allowed. That would mean his parents had to denounce his U.S. citizenship. There are a number of factors that have to be in place for oil to form...it is a process that takes way longer than 50-100 years and relies on multiple factors that must be in place.

Apparently some of you are bigots first. Only the unintelligent close their mind to their enemies, or to alternative viewpoints. And clearly you view Fox as an enemy.

I am astonished at the liberal slant, no, apologists, who write for MSNBC, CNN, Bloomberg, AP and Reuters, but I read them in order to have as complete a picture as possible. To leave out Fox is foolish - they report on some issues completely ignored by these other services, and some, believe it or not oh close-minded ones, the information is both interesting and valuable.

But if bigotry and close mindedness is working for you, rock on.

Thinking that Fox news is a load of crap doesn't make anyone a bigot. Don't get me wrong, I watch fox. However, I watch it for its entertainment programming which is pretty much most of it. I don't get much news out of Fox, and what I do get is completely polarized. The same is true of almost all news in this country, and if someone can't see that they are "drinking the kool aid." Listening to two polarized views does not give you a balanced viewpoint anymore than sticking your head up two different sets of asses makes you smell any better.

I don't like biased news reporting from either side, but I feel I must watch Fox News because it seems to be the only news outlet in the US that is not totally in love with the Obama administration...Fox may be biased the other way, but it is refreshing to see a news show that is actually willing to criticize the federal gov't, rather than be a shill and mouthpiece for everything that comes out of Washington....and BTW, I dislike both Limbaugh and Olbermann.

Fox News does not report news they only spin facts to make Obama look bad. They are the most biased of all.

And all the other news sources admit they're bias. Did you notice the Fox banner"fair and balanced"? I don't think so.

I think this is our actual Middle East policy. It's our quickest path to making a region of the world that doesn't like us irrelevant. Why else would we continue to pressure Middle East producers to sell to us as at reasonable cost when Canada sits on the world's largest untapped oil reserves? Why else would we wait almost until we have no choice to start drilling in our own back yard when the Chinese have already setup shop drilling in our backyard?

Go to the beach in Corpus Christi, then go to the beach anywhere along the FL panhandle. You'll see the difference before you even get out of your car. The beaches on the western side of the Gulf where all those hours of drilling occur are ugly and brown. The beaches on the eastern side of the Gulf are pristine. It doesn't take a spill. The proof is there, just go see it. 7 - 8 years worth of oil, which more than likely will be exported or benefit a foreign owned oil company, just don't justify a lifetime of environmental plight.

Pick up a map and learn some geography and you will understand why the beaches around Corpus Christi look they way they do compared to the Florida panhandle around Panama City. It has ZERO to do with the oil drilling which is many miles offshore. Texas actually has rivers that dump tons of sediment into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida doesn't have any rivers to speak of.

Tracy thanks for pointing out the obvious, Florida is a veritable desert surrounded by water. FL has no rivers on either coast (Suwanee, Indian, Escambia, Apalachicola....google it. much easier than a map) no lakes, springs, bayous, or swamps (you could probably google these too.) Incidentally, geology and topography would be more appropriate studies on which to base your argument. Yes, just in case you weren't sure...the first sentence is me being sarcastic.

One last thing...you neglect to mention the industrial waste that is being dumped into those rivers. How much of those tons of sediment have been tainted by refinieries and other industrial enterprises before reaching the Gulf?

Have you seen the latest drinking water standards out of Houston? Probably not. The water is better than fine.

Also more chemical waste is dumped in the Gulf from farms than from oil rigs. Try not to talk about Texas unless you actually know something about it.

lol, Kenneth, Phoenix, you had me going for a second, given I live within view of one of those non-existent rivers (Caloosahatchee), not to mention being virtually a stones throw of those non-existent wetlands (Everglades).

But then again, I'm not in the panhandle arround Panama City, so mabey I'm the exception, and the rest of florida really is a desert, and I just don't have the proper map....;)

Our Technology is so much more perfected for off-shore drilling than during the last crisis how many decades ago? We've got to start utilizing ALL of our resourses. thank God out Pres has a long range view that makes this the perfect jump off point for out deversification and self sustainablity.

This was a wake-up call to the Arabs. We are SERIOUS about getting off this Arab oil addiction America has. It makes sense to drill close to our Military and commercial shipping ports!
