I miss the McDonald's in Germany. Great food to soak up some alcohol with!! It was better (much better) than 90% of the McDonald's here in the States! I have been home over 5 months and have yet to eat at McDonald's (I was in the drive thru at one one night and no one could be bothered to take my order so I went across the street to Burger King)!!
On the one hand, I am glad that McDonalds is making a point to buy from Italian farmers. In contrast, McDonald's USA no longer buys all American beef. The are going to South America.
I quit going to McDonalds a long time ago. I just stay home and grill my own burgers. McDonalds used to be a simple burger joint where all you could get was a Big Mac or milkshake. Now they are once again, in the quest to please everyone, making an attempt to roll out fancy menu items...its still fast food man.
willowbrook, McDs has not used ALL american beef in decades.
They switched to S American beef as those countries have developed cattle ranches.
Back in the 80s and early 90s they imported from Australia. This relationship was strained when they discovered that they were stretching the ground beef with....get this...KANGAROO meat.
This is all fine with me. I don't want the best beef in the world being wasted at McDonalds!!!! And if US beef is going to be used for burgers, let it be by Five Guys Burgers and Fries! Now THEY know how to make burgers and fries.
Seriously! artichoke spread and asiago cheese? Yumm! It's not like, just because they've got this new food campagin, EVERYONE in Italy is going to go out and eat them for dinner every night...same thing here. Mickey D's was a treat once in a while and Friday night was pizza night, but otherwise, we had home-cooked, tried and true family dinners...
Don't get me wrong--but when I travel to Italy, the last thing I want is to eat at a US franchise.
I don't think geography would make the difference for me ,the last thing I would want regardless of the local would be eating that crap. I'm sure that Italian cattle are just as tasty as American cattle, but it seems that Mickey D"s could ruin good meat no matter what contenant they are operating on.
They even manage to get fries wrong. I do not know how that is even possible but you would only have to visit your local shop to find out that they can .As far as it goes Mickey D's is a cash cow and the Italians are just milking them for what they can get before she goes dry. Can't blame them for that. The only ones complaining are the ones who have not figured out their own angle yet.
I am agreeing with you Lkessler. I just had it clarify that because it seems sometimes people misunderstand what it is that I have said on this site.
So just to reiterate I will say "yuck" indeed there is not much that would manage to get me in the door of a Mc Donold's (except a bathroom stop on a long trip) let alone eat the food.
No doubt check there are different degrees of bad. I personally have not had much bad food from either Mc Donald's or Burger King ,they are both on the same low quality, level. which is why I've not much bad food from either, I never eat the stuff ,I think the last time was about 1977 or somewhere about that time.
I do not understand how it is possible to take the same piece of meat that would be perfect at home, and have it turn into what they serve at these places..
I hope the Italians continue to cry about the insult to their 'cultural traditions' while they are broken and penniless due to their policies which have ran their country into the ground with massive debt and deficits. You'd think they would want businesses highlighting them in any way possible. Who the hell am I kidding, this is one of the epicenters of socialist Europe and the grand daddy of the fascism of the 1900s.
You done. You feel better about yourself now. Okay now it's my turn. America, like the rest of the world, is broke too. How many banks have gone under, how many businesses were bailed out, how many foreclosures have you seen, how many jobs have been lost, how many more examples do I need to give. Finally, where do you think America has been getting the finances to prop itself up during all of this.... from the biggest, fiercest, most communist, in-humanitarian piece of $@!$%# country in the world. CHINA. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones buddy.
Italy is not the country spending or should I say pouring money into the pockets of CEOs to keep a doomed company afloat. People like you shoul actually get an edcuation on how Italy is financed and structured. People taking care of people. Next time you should have an edcuation before you speak....
Cnihtwit- what an asinine comment. McDonald's isn't doing this to help Italy's economy. This is just more exporting of everything that is wrong with America to the rest of the world, just like Babylon, Rome, Spain and the British Empire before us.
I seriously challenge you to make a comparison of what you think Fettuccine (that's how you spell it) Alfredo is and what it looks like in Italy. You can't even compare it to what you find here in the states. Even if you've been to Italy I wouldn't assume what you find in any tourist city there as Italian either. Anything you find in those tourist traps is just garbage that is served to the tourists. After all, what would a stranger know to be authentic. The point I'm trying to make is this... you're ignorant to what real Italian cuisine is. Now go to Round Table and enjoy your peace of $hit pizza dumb American.
Giovanni. don't take this the wrong way but try not to be too sensitive with some of the remarks. Some of it is satirical, some sarcastic, some will complain because they just like to complain. A vast majority give great commentary and exchange interesting ideas.
All of my grandparents emigrated to the US in the early 1900's from Italy. I grew up on real Italian food and can relate. I think though that you down play or disparage the value of the foods that one can find at the tourist locations. During the early to mid 1970's my ship assigned to US sixth fleet made many port calls all over Italy. We would stay for a few days and I being in a transient mode would go out to the local restaurants, clubs, what have you and I and my shipmates would for the most part be very satisfied with the quality and variety of foods available. The average comsumer is satisfied with this type of faire as long as it is attractively presented, tastes good, is wholesome and at a fair price.
On another note I think that the new McDonalds McItaly line is a good idea. It's good for business both American and Italian. It can suit tourists and people on the go in a pinch. I wouldn't make a steady diet of it, however it does have it's niche.
Giovanni, you do realise that there are almost as many Italian Americans as Italians, right?
We may have introduced Americans to our food with the Olive Garden and Pizza Hut, but all that does is lead them to places like Papa Milanos in downtown Chicago that is just as good or better than almost any restaurant in Italy.
Italians dot suddenly forget how to cook when they move here.
Cool it dude, you are making Dagos like myself cringe with the attitude and ignorance about your own people.
Does anyone else see American culture working intermittently as a virus? The Italians inspire us with Ferrari's, Bernini's and Michelangelo's and what do we give them in return? Cold, cheap food that converts their agricultural industry into the most base of interchangable commodities. McMerlot anyone?
Thrown in some Freedom Fries and I would try one of the Pizza Burgers!
But I think the Italians will choke on the corporate America slop and end up wondering why they are obese and have clogged arteries. The government minister did not sell out alone, but at least the farmers will have a market for their goods.
Pick your poison is the dilemma here.......traditions or economics.
I didn't know that Italian people were so sensitive. McDonald' probably employs local people and pays local taxes and is probably a source of local taxes for italy. What gives with local politicians ? You might think that they learned from our local republicans to say "no" to everything.
You're right folks. I went overboard on this one. Please accept my apologies. I should have taken a breather and thought about it a little longer. I really sound like a jerk. Once again please accept my apologies.
No problem, We all get carried away sometimes. It's good to see someone man enough to stand up and apologise. I for one have no hard feelings and wish you the best.
Yeah, McDonalds isn't high end, it's not haute couture, and it's not healthy. But it sells! If Italians didn't want to eat McDonalds, there wouldn't be any McDonalds in the country! They obviously have some sort of market, and offering locally produced fare created for the Italian palette on a not-so-Italian budget sounds like a good idea.
I've only been to Italy on vacation, and while there I was extremely intimidated by going out to eat. Tourist spots, friendly smiles, and having menus available in English were great for someone who wants a good meal but is too afraid to walk in somewhere "authentic" and look like an idiot or order something I'm allergic to.
I did live in Japan for about three years, and I loved the McDonalds there. They had special burgers and options that were Japan-only too, and they were awesome (and I'm not just talking about the Teriyaki burger!). Everyday people don't live off "slow food" alone, and I loved that Japan was able to embrace the idea of Western fast food and make it their own. Complaining about it only makes you look like a snob. If you have the time and money to eat somewhere nicer, why should you even care?
Actually they are healthier than most fried fast food.
If you compare the fat, salt, and caleries, McDs has the healthiest breakfast sandwich, the Egg McMuffin, healthiest Milk Shake and Ice Cream, and many other menu items when compared to the major fried food chains.
I wish Mc D would have an international menu in the US. I've been to McDs in countries like India, Denmark, England, Germany, spain, France, etc. My girls went to the one in Florence. It's fun to experience the differences. Im not your typical Mc D's consumer. I only go on vacation and I find the ones overseas to be BETTER BY FAR!
Why does the States get stuck with the McCrap? Its because we have low standards. We have people who say that artichoke spread sounds nasty. That's right you just keep on eating your processed cheese-food that we so proudly call AMERICAN CHEESE.
McD's tailors their menu to the country's tastes. Our country likes fake food so that's what we get while Italy is getting Asiago and artichoke.
The Italians, esp. the children, are becoming the most obese in the EU. McDonald's marketing there is the same as in the USA, get the kids hooked and habituated on junk food and you have generations of fat, malnourished and indescrimating customers. How sad the Italian government sold out for a short gain but now enourage their people to accept bad eating habits in the long term. Esp. for Italy. What healthy, natural and delicious food!
Think, half of my family is Italian and most of their friends as well. They never touched McDonald's. You want to talk about fat, see how MUCH they eat. They make their own food, Italian-style dishes. These dishes are healthy, but the amount they eat is ridiculous. Note: I'm not saying Italians are fat.
In short, it's not so much the junk food as it is the portions. Too much of anything is unhealthy.
I can certainly understand the desire to have ones country retain a cultural identity...the foods of a region are among those characteristics which make a country unique. But globalization is a mark of the times and the times march on. I am not a fast food consumer for health reasons but can see why it has appeal...and as an occasional meal it is fine...but I really like the way McDonalds and some of the other franchise fast food places make adaptations to their food which reflects the "flavor" of the country. I lived in Europe for three and a half years and have to say the food in even the non-exclusive restaurants, was superior to the US in freshness and preparation...of course the wait time for food preparation and serving was much longer in Europe where a meal is to be savored and enjoyed over a lengthy time compared to the US. But each country has its own customs and style...that is what makes it fun to travel and live in other places. I did find, for the most part, the serving sizes more modest in Europe and the preparation a bit healthier. I did not miss the food in the US but do still miss Weinerwald Chicken! (a German chain restaurant, frequently found in rest areas off the autobahns and in small towns)...actually a fairly fast food place but with terrific food...especially the chicken!
You know, that actually sounds good! and spaghetti is probably cheaper than burgers. Marinara on fries isn't much different than ketchup, and if it caught on, lower calorie than cheese fries.
bart is right, the what Americans think of as "Italian" food is actually peasant food. Pizza and macaroni and gravy....My Italian grandmother always thought it was ironic that Americans love the crap they ate when poor and unemployed in Italy.
Real Italian food is heavy into the seafood and other things Americans don't usually associate with "Italian" food like fine pork and hams and tasty beef dishes.
In order to eat at McDonald's, you have to drive or walk there, open the door, go to the counter, pick a meal and actually pay money for it. You're not strapped to a chair and force fed. It's the individual choice, not the business that makes a consumer fat. If people didn't buy it, the business would not exist. Unless of course, McDonald's has figured out a way to make it addictive, akin to cigarettes!
Dear Friends:
Hope McDonalds does not loose our favorites, but this sounds great!
Pizza on a burger with a garlic roasted bun and little white sauce ( mayonaise).
How about a Spain burger too? Three peppers, onions olives, olive oil on lettace and a grilled bun and burger! Have fun with it!
Glad to see corporations are hungry after any and every nation. Wonder if it is called French Fries or potato fries?
Mctoobad!! You put your name on crappy Italian dressing. Whats the prob?
There are so many natural jokes that one could make about this, that to start would be like giving a 6 year old a 12 pack of Red Bull.
Hay Y'all... ITALY rules...
That is good that Italy has these pressing problems. Glad that they don't have any major problems.

Make it in the USA!
The probability of being able to keep it fresh in transit to Italy is slim. Not much profit in stale buns and cold burgers
Then you haven't ate at MC's lately.
Don't get me wrong--but when I travel to Italy, the last thing I want is to eat at a US franchise.

Depends on what chains you go to. The McDonald's by me is good, but there are some McDonald's I avoid.
I had horrible food at the Burger Kings that I went to, but I am not going to slam the rest of the chains.
No doubt check there are different degrees of bad. I personally have not had much bad food from either Mc Donald's or Burger King ,they are both on the same low quality, level. which is why I've not much bad food from either, I never eat the stuff ,I think the last time was about 1977 or somewhere about that time.

Really!!!! Healthy food from Italy? Sure maybe some - but "wata-bout" Fettucinne Alfredo? eh? mmm sooo good no matter how you spell it!
I seriously challenge you to make a comparison of what you think Fettuccine (that's how you spell it) Alfredo is and what it looks like in Italy. sounds like you have a big old italian bug up your ass giovanni,

Cool it Gio!
Typical euro-rage.
Giovanna
Are you still at home enjoying your momma's cooking?
Don't you think living at home when you're 50 is a little peculier?
Take a shower and leave the nest greaseball.
Gio, Eat it or we'll make a deal you can't refuse.
Giovanni, you do realise that there are almost as many Italian Americans as Italians, right?

Tough get over it
If Italy doesn't want it, bring it to the states. Sounds like something I would love to try!
Well, clearly the US doesn't have a monopoly on the whiner market.
Sounds really good; hope they bring it to the states. As far as the Italian protectionism, it didn't work in France, and won't work in Italy either.
Artichoke sauce. That just sounds nasty.
Asiago cheese and artichoke sauce. That sounds interesting. I'd try it.
sounds kinda like vomit.
Does anyone else see American culture working intermittently as a virus? The Italians inspire us with Ferrari's, Bernini's and Michelangelo's and what do we give them in return? Why didn't they complain about the Whopper?
That's funny!
Shouldn't it be McItalia and not McItaly?
It's a matter of choice. No intentional insults are being made in this. People will buy it or they won't.
Nice to read something different for a change though.
Sounds better than McD has here, bring on the Italian McD. Sounds scrumpcious?
You're right folks. I went overboard on this one. Please accept my apologies. I should have taken a breather and thought about it a little longer. I really sound like a jerk. Once again please accept my apologies.

Wow!
Right back atcha Giovanni!
I too am sorry......for my comment above.
I happen to love my country and NEVER sit back and take abuse.
Whining Italians. We embrace and endorse so many different cuisines here in the US. I don't see the problem if people want to buy it.
