I am a West Indian and although this advertisements sends the wrong message I am not in the least upset coming from a country founded and populated my criminals. And yeah sorry West Indian people are not big on fried food sorry to disappoint .
Note, it wasn't a problem "Until" it came to the attention of American blacks! People here in the good old USA need to understand, the whole world doesn't share our views, get over it! Go KFC, it was a good commercial! Ignore Americans we're silly people anyway!
Hey Tired of BS - I heard an Aussie say on the news the other day that they don't have the same racial problems as we have here in the 'free world' um I mean the USA. He further said they say what they want without a fuss - no one gets there knickers in a bunch. Only in America.
"The spot, which foreshadows a much-anticipated clash between the two fiercely competitive cricketing nations, ran for three weeks without raising a ripple of complaint in Australia."
This just illustrates how the politically correctness religion has thoroughly blinded Americans. The folk in Australia thought nothing of this ad. Liberal American apologists however have their panties in a wad.
What is wrong with the people of the world? As soon as the rest of the world becomes sensitive to the political correctness of the United States all of the world's problems will be solved. Despite what the rest of the world thinks, if the African Americans think it is wrong - it is wrong.
Equality? That went by the wayside when Johnson was in office. IT's been an uphill struggle for the middle class white male ever since then. What with EEO, quotas, affirmative action, on and on.
One white guy in a KFC commercial? One? Why the nerve! Racists! Every damn one of them. You Australians better get some more white people in that commercial before Big Brother (America) puts some sactions on your ass. You know, like the ones we've put on Iran and North Korea. Oh really? You guys don't give a damn what the PC police in America says? Good for you! I don't give a damn what they say either. Just some lonely ass people (PC police in America) with nothing better to do.
If this is such a bad video for blacks, how come so many were willing to be in the commercial?
"the West Indian supporters surrounding him" - not African Americans.
Only the African Americans recognize racism - the rest of the world is ignorant to racism since they don't realize the association between fried chicken and blacks.
"I know what good is" spoken/sung in Ebonics is racist too. It seems like every commercial pointed at Black America is tainted with stereotypical Ebonic banter. I'm quite sure all Black Americans are not Hip Hop gangstas, just like all White Americans are not Red Neck Country fans. The media thinks that they must exclude a portion of the audience in order to target another portion. Not True!
Well - seems like racism is only the case when it is white discriminating against black.. Check out the problems in a Philadelphia high school where asians are being victimised by blacks.. That is not racism according to the school district..
Oh noes! If people get offended we must always do exactly what they want! Can't have anyone getting offended...
Some folks need to stop wearing their race on their sleeves. Aren't West Indians predominately black? Isn't the commercial about a rival cricket team fan getting himself out of the middle of a potentially bad situation by feeding the crowd? Would it have been correct to have a crowd of folks who were white, wearing the WI uniforms.... ?
Overall, I think people who cry over stuff like this - as well as the corporations that bend to the smallest offense - need to grow up and take a look at the real world.
Here we go again.....the political correctness patrol attacks again. Get over it people. I'm hispanic and if the commercial depicted the guy dangling a taco to hispanics, it wouldn't bother me a bit! There are more important things in this world to worry about. Enough already!
I'm with you F.B. I am of Italian heritage. I loved the Carl Jr's. ad where the guy in the car falls asleep after eating the burger and ketchup dripped all over him looks like blood. The hit men arrive and think someone got there before them and he's dead. Hilarious. Lighten up America. If we can't poke fun of ourselves we are a sorry lot. Ever watch the Chappelle Show! It's all good fun, regardless of your race. Agree with another poster too, if it was so offensive, how did they get those black actors to play their parts? Doesn't pride trump money when it comes to those who are politically correct?
Hell, my favorite David Chappell was the time he played the leader of the Ku Klux Klan, priceless. I'm surprised there wasn't a huge outrage over that show.
I totally agree with you guys. I'm a natural blond. DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE STEREOTYPE THING.
So this commercial didn't cause a stir till it reached the US, perhaps the KFC people knew their targeted audience and the US not being included never crossed their minds. People causing the stir has way to much time on their hands.
Doesn't everyone love KFC? I think that's the point of the commercial. I grew up eating fried chicken about once a week - we were white Midwesterners. Everyone ate fried chicken back then. I didn't know it was considered "black" food until I was in my mid 20s. We also loved watermelon - didn't know it was "black" until after I was an adult.
We're so prickly here, it's really immature and embarrassing - no wonder the rest of the world hates us.
Haven't you heard that any minority group in America deserves special treatment and should never be offended for any reason, even reality.
It's not only part of the reason the world hates us, its a big reason they have no respect for us. Iran, North Korea, China, Pakistan, etc... are supposed to listen to us when we won't even deport illegal immigrants from our own soil and we codle anyone who complains about something?
It was not an issue until it made it to America where there are so many groups waiting to be offended. If it had been targeted here, I actually could see the case for it being insensitive. But it was being shown in Australia. NOT HERE!
Hey, KFC ----- The real offense was not the ad itself, but the venue it was portrayed in. Cricket? Here? What you should have shown was a group of professional athletes pulling guns on each other in the locker room or discharging a gun in a club. From the lack of abhorrent reaction to these actions in this country, with barely a ripple condemning the actions, apparently, THAT would be acceptable. This country has become severely dysfunctional and far too many hold the disruptors up for admiration. Truly, the dumbing down of America.
----i see nothing wrong in this commercial--the reaction is irrational and we should be past this silliness by now--as far as guns in the nba goes--that's ok because they are the rich hip hop blacks---
I totally agree...........GROW UP PEOPLE!! This walking on eggshells with every little comment is getting ridiculous. The country is in a shambles and people are worrying about an Australian commercial????? If it had been anybody other than a white guy in the exact same commercial, would people have been raving against it? Think not!
I think American blacks are sissies, and find every reason to cry about unfair treatment, but it does seem kind of strange that if they were trying to point out the rivalry between the two teams, why was he the only white guy? I don't think it's racist. I just think it's a poorly thought out commercial.
Linnie, I don't think all American blacks are that sensitive. I've worked with a few who have told me that Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and even the NAACP don't have the clout with the AA crowd that they used to have. The "black community" is not monolithic and they have as diverse opinions as the "white community."
Well if they don't have anything to b!^*h about here, then they will go look for it elsewhere. I don't give a dam what they show in other countries! Geez Americans are such babies! Whine over EVERYTHING! Get a life!
I always find it fascinating to watch people fighting for "Their Rights". The tunnel vision kicks in and there is a mirror at the other end depicting how things should look when they win the disagreement. We want our rights and are content to sacrifice your rights to get them! When I understood the intentions of this commercial, it cracked me up. I guess if all your eyes and mind are tuned into is a place to pick a fight, then you have been successful. Congratulations, "Your Rights" have been protected again!
Humor by definition ALWAYS makes fun of someone or something. A Conservative would tell you not to laugh, a Liberal would try to get their legislators to pass a law banning it.
But, the white baby had been around for awhile and we knew he was all business - it was what made him a hit. Having another baby just like the first one would not have been funny. They could have made the second baby a female, an Asian or Latino, or maybe a Russian - someone would complain about any of them.
Americans do walk on eggshells, the Africian American population has a fit over everything yet the black agenda is shoved in the faces of non blacks and we tolerate it. Once again the blacks need to lighten up, grow up and just get over things.
shelly; Please stop showing your ignorance by generalizing, i.e. "blacks need", "the African American population", "black agenda is shoved". Please, choose your words more carefully. I have seen the commercial and do not find it racist, I have seen the Ameritrade commercial and do not find that offensive.
Not all Black Americans spend all their time trying to find something to cry racism about.
Speaking of being afraid! Shelly talks of walking on eggshells while using the PC term "African American". Feel strongly both ways, do ya? I prefer the term used by Brad-Melton. Black American.
Let's just redo the ad, Have some Aussie give a bucket of chicken to a multi ethnic group of poor and homeless people, you would expect them to jump at the chicken. Then have him call up some sports stars from a variety of nationalities, a few CEO's, a movie star or two, Rush, Glen, and Keith - the high paid guys we pay to keep us pumped up, and have them all drive down to the Ghetto and distribute chicken !!! What an ad....might start a trend.
How long are we to be held hostage to everyone who makes a career of being insulted? The muslims have done a good job of "training" the whole world that you can't make fun of their poo-ba. Blacks have Jackson and others who are perpetually insulted. When is it whites turn to be insulted by the lack of white basketball players? How about some equality in hip-hop?
If your self image is so fragile that a joke can hurt it, you need to do some growing up - maybe a lot of growing up.
I rated the story low because it is way off. The US is way over-sensitive to all this stereotype. When Olive Garden shows Italians sitting around eating pasta we don't harp on them for racial offense. When we see mexicans working at a mexican restaurant we dont cry out racial comments. Blacks do like chicken and the portrayal of them eating the fried chicken is racist, but that doesnt make it bad. Not unless you criticize Italians for eating pasta and mexicans for eating beans. This is the same politically incorrect, intolerant people that made us start calling a man-hole and person-hole.
What ALWAYS cracks me the hell up is everytime I go to a Chinese restaurant, a small greasy one or a large fancyShmancy P.F. one, and the double-doors to the kitchen swing open, WHAT DO YOU SEE?!? YEP, you guessed it, a buncha mexicans, not one chinese person to be found behind the swinging double doors. The best chinese cooks are mexicans. I should just walk into Big BerthaCita's Kitchen and ask for some flied lice. See what happens next. Yes. I live on The Edge.
So it would be OK to have a black person handing out chicken to white people?
Is this what the black people are saying. It is OK to stereotype whites but not blacks?
Why is it only Americans get to decide what is racist and what is not? Is the rest of the world ignorant?
If the people in that country saw nothing wrong in making that commercial does that mean the blacks in that country are too ignorant to see that it depicts stereotypes?
Our planet earth is speeding thru space at over 1,000,000 mph and our little boat called planet earth is about 6500 miles in diameter. I wish all of you dumb***** would quit being silly pi**ing each other off. We have huge problems to deal with as a team on this planet or we are all going to suffer horribly by irritating one another like we are in kindergarten. Haven't we humans evolved past being silly? Why don't you all try to be like me *********?
As an American who recently researched and visited Australia, I was struck by the high level of public racism against non-whites that they tolerated.
In Australia, it is not against the law to post ads for jobs or roommates specifying the race or religion of the desired applicant. Check out the ads on Australia's Craigslist and you will find posters specifying that they are looking for a white or Asian or Muslim roommate.
Racism against Blacks is higher and more tolerated in Australia than in the U.S. That's likely why this KFC ad didn't stir up controversy until Americans watched it in disbelief.
I've also faced similar public racism in Japan where it was perfectly legal for a shop or restaurant owner to prevent a non-Japanese people (Gaijin), including whites, from entering their business. I've seen them running to the entrance of their establishment when they saw me coming in, wave their arms, and say "No Gaijin, No Gaijin). I just had to walk away, shaking my head in disgust.
If you are looking for a roomate, to live in your home with you, why shouldn't you be allowed to specify what type of person you want to live with? I would try to prevent having a new roomie who prays ten times a day, with his ass up in the air on his hands and knees, or cooks with loads of curry that stinks like hell before and after it is consumed.
I think we should be able to choose our roommates, tenants and clientele. The dating services allow you to choose race the race as part of their search criteria. Why would an ad for a rommie be any different?
If a black guy walked down the street in a white neighborhood, nothing would ahppen to him. If a white person walked through the black section of town, tehy would be beaten, robbed and murdered. High crime areas- you can tell by the yellow street lights) are not where you want to be if you're white. And they're all in black neighborhoods. American blacks are crybabies. They ought to listen to Bill COsby and straighten their act up. Then maybe they will get some respect.
Traci; In many contries around the world you are able to speak your mind without fear of repercussion as in America. I have seen ads for roommates, housekeepers, drivers, etc. and the ad is very specific, gender, age, color and religion.
I think that you'd find in Australia that advertised jobs cannot discriminate on the basis of age, race, religion, or anything else (it is against the law unless you've recieved approval from the anti-discrimination commissioner in the state I live in).
In terms of ads for sharing apartments/homes why shouldn't you be able to say you want something like a single white female age 25-40. Would you say that saying non-smoker was descriminatory?
The whole thing is stupid anway. The fried chicken thing is an American hangup not an Australian one, I've seen the ad on TV and never gave it a second thought. It's about rival fans from two cricket teams and KFC sponsors cricket in Australia and they sell fried chicken. Just because someone in the US considers it racist doesn't make it racist here.
People have preferences and they should be respected. It's been that way throughout human history. People are tribal and prefer living with people who are like themselves. The rest of the world understands that. It is not racism to want to live with another black person or another Muslim. It is racism if you do not want a Black or Muslim living in your building or your neighborhood. I have the utmost respect for the Jewish religion, but I would never want to live with a kosher Jew because the separate utensils thing would drive me crazy. I respect their right to observe those laws, but I don't want to LIVE with it.
Blacks will never go back to the days of blatant racism and minstrel shows. That ship has sailed. If you don't like it, move to Australia where, apparently, it's ok.
I have watched this video 4 times - where's the racism? These complainers need to get a life! There's more racism and hate in any Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton speech than there is in that actually humorous commercial about a situation every one can relate to.
I think Sharpie and Jackson should be protesting all the weather people predicting more "white stuff", all the Christmas songs about a "white Christmas" and the businesses publishing their studies as "white papers". We must have total equality, no recognition of any color at all! And we should outlaw all "black boards".
Or maybe we should just get a grip, and acknowledge that people are really born different, and that is perfectly OK. Seems to me that people were a lot happier in the fifties, before we all made a career of being insulted cry babies.
As a black man, the issue I see is that the word "racism" has no meaning now. When ever someone says anything about the president, they are called racist. If anyone disagrees with a decision he makes, they are called racists. The tea party people are racist, blah, blah, blah. If the blacks who are living now, myself included, were living when racism really did exist, we could not handle it. We could not deal with the fire hoses and the dogs on us all the time. We could not tolerate the back of the bus treatment. That is real racism. Don't get me wrong, racism exists, but not nearly as much as it is talked about. In fact I would dare say that there are more blacks that show their racist ways than there are whites. Maybe is we as blacks held ourselves to the same standard we hold other races to, then we would get along with most everyone a lot better. Obviously when I say "we as blacks", everyone knows what I mean.
That sounded racist Craig...............just kidding. I do agree with a lot of what you are saying though, and thankfully I hear more of it, from a lot of my black friends today! There is hope.
Do you think that will ever happen, Nukeman? I hear these black leaders on TV saying we need a dialogue on race, then the next things of their mouths - every one of them - is, "White people need to understand....." I don't see much of a dialogue coming out of that attitude. What they want is a public forum where they ream the white people and air al their grievances. Apparently, a lot of them don't get that it's not white against black - we are a multiracial society and Asians, Latinos, Native Americans, South Pacific Islanders, etc., all want to be included in any racial dialogue.
Actually, since the Latinos vastly outnumber the Blacks now, they should have a louder voice and more control over the agenda. I just don't see it happening. I think there is way too much anger and resentment in this country for us to actually sit down and discuss things civilly.
Remember a few months back what happened with the Cambridge cop and the Harvard professor?
as a white man, you are correct in what you said... I am, of course, a lawman and I have been called a racist more than once in my life time.. Not just by blacks, but by mexican and indians as well... I am part indian, my daughters boyfriend is indian and I have a niece that is married to a black man and they have five beautiful daughters... I get really tired of this racists crap myself and racism does still exist and always will.. There will be no end to it because we are only human and we make stupid remarks, jokes, and ads that offend someone...no matter what their race is... good post Craig and God bless
I am a West Indian and although this advertisements sends the wrong message I am not in the least upset coming from a country founded and populated my criminals. And yeah sorry West Indian people are not big on fried food sorry to disappoint .
You might be correct. I know a few West Indians and hardly any of them, if any, are fond of fried food, especially fried chicken.
Grio article.
Kinda interesting that this is in business.
Note, it wasn't a problem "Until" it came to the attention of American blacks! People here in the good old USA need to understand, the whole world doesn't share our views, get over it! Go KFC, it was a good commercial! Ignore Americans we're silly people anyway!

gimme a break.......CUE: "Jesse J", holding his hand out for more millions......no problem mon, everyting irie, mon
The same reason the white was in the commercial..
Pretty dumb question
Some one like you always has to stir the pot instead of just taking a lesson in cultural sensitivity....
Cultural Sensitivity? Good God. I'll sit still for some KFC, and I'm white. Is that sensitive enough for you?
Tired - There you go again - making me laugh. And Muna - I'm laughing the most at you.

This ad is nothing compared to the Ameritrade ad with the "intelligent, focused" white baby trying to talk to a "shucking and jiving" black baby.
I see this one all the time in the US and have heard no complaints
It's funny, tho. They also make fun of old golfers.

Actually, the earth travels through space at half that speed.
Commenter77, actually , the KillShot is on correct course and speed... Enjoy the fried chiggen while you still can
As an American who recently researched and visited Australia, I was struck by the high level of public racism against non-whites that they tolerated.
I respect their right to observe those laws, but I don't want to LIVE with it.
what parts of the World does KFC sell fried crickets?!?!
(ken-) TUCKY FRIED CRICKETS?!?!
And while we're on the subject, when are the networks going to pull those offensive Lucky Charms cereal adds. Always trying to keep the Irishman down.
All this time I thought they poured a pint on the cereal. Why are they ruining it by pouring milk on it?
Ya Think?
So what will my weatherman say instead of telling us the snow has caused a whiteout?
An overabundance of pigment-deficient weather? Hm.
... Shecky will be appearing at The Funny HaHa tomorrow, thru the end of the month...
Good stuff Craig. This will never go away until we all talk honestly (NO PC CRAP) about it, like adults.
