I love Volkswagons. I had a Passat, and a Jetta. I've had/driven alot of cars over the years, and VW is my personal pick. I'm sure that people will disagree, but that's why it's an opinion.
good luck with your jokewagon. my last jetta lost a timing belt at 90000 miles cost $5000 to replace engine vw of America refused to honor warranty owners book said belt good to 100000 miles(there's a reason they are at the bottom with customer service)traded jet-ta for used civic with 80000 miles Honda said don't worry if t-belt breaks before 110000 mile Honda would cover repairs. my other car is a 1991 accord with 380000 miles enough said
I agree. My daughter had a 2005 Jetta and was in a car accident. It took them 4 months to return the vehicle...one excuse after the other, transporting it back and forth between garage and dealer. The worst customer service I have ever seen! Neither she nor I will ever buy a VW again.
I agree, I have a 2000 VW Bug drives as good as the day I bought it, hardly any issues. I Owned a 1996 GM sunfire and it was ready for the dump by 2000.
ISpeakTruth writes "BUY AMERICAN". What exactly does that mean - is this based on manufacturer's name or domestic content? Many foreign brands are assembled in the US and have a greater domestic content than many American built models. A Toyota Camry has one of the highest percentages of domestic content, while a Chrysler PT Cruiser is built in Mexico and has a domestic content of only 27%. Since Fiat's purchase of Chrysler, both companies are now foreign owned. So what exactly does the "Buy American" statement mean?
What he means when he says "BUY AMERICAN" is anything built by the UAW, over inflated wages, crap ass work ethic and a work force with an over inflated sense of entitlement.
I have worked at the dealerships as a mechanic at Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota and have worked on many Honda's, Mitsubishi's, Kia's, Mercedes, Land Rover's, Jaguar's, etc. For those that point blame and drive a car and say its great without any real experience be quiet, this matter doesn't concern you, you only buy what the media has told you to buy. Toyota has only risen as high as it did, because of its marketing. Thats it! I can honesstly say all manufaurers make terrible cars. As of late Ford is making some of the best cars and I have owned foreign and domestic and domestic is more affordable and last way longer. For those that love Toyota, most Yota's needed well over $1,500 in repairs at 100,000 miles and every 60,000 and it wasn't until they started copying the American and German automakers that their quality started improving. Anyone can drive a car and neglect it and blindly say its the best car they have owned. It takes an educated mechanic to see past the hype and know what quality really is. Say what you like about American car makers but remember that is our Americans that you are dooming, while you are giving out money to other countries that are trying to be us or trying to destroy us. Bottom line you can't compete with the quality of American cars, you just have to know what you are talking about and what it is you are looking for. Don't be a sheep.
You obviously have a condition called, "I work in the rear of the house and clearly don't understand value". You may have gotten some oil in your eyes from a leaky Cadillac or a Chrysler of some sort and cannot see that the consumer is telling what you what is made best. Because they are BUYING the Toyota's and Honda's and they are retaining there value. You want to talk about marketing, how about a "Different Kind of Car from a Different Kind of Car Company". That was a marketing scheme from day one, and look where it got them. Going down in flames. Marketing only goes so far, at some point you have to actually build a quality car. Something that domestics only seem to be getting around to now. And how would you know that the new Ford's are built better? Are you working on them already? Or are you just prepping them for delivery once they arrive at the dealer? In any case it doesn't matter, hopefully a wrench won't have to hit you in the head to get you to see that the real sheep are the ones that don't research and blindly buy what Mike Rowe or some CEO from AT&T tells them to.
You are missing the new forces- the Koreans and the Chinese. The "New" number 1 will be one of them. Say what you want about patriotism, but sadly the average buyer will buy the cheapest, most reliable car she can. As soon as Walmart starts selling Chinese cars, watch out.
Ford already has the most fuel efficient mid-size sedan, the Fusion Hybrid. Early next year, they will introduce the Fiesta to market. By the end of next year, they will introduce the next Focus, which will be the same as the European Focus. FYI - the European Focus frequently is given greater praise in Europe than the Honda Civic, which is considered the standard by which all other small cars are compared. We don't hear about it because we can't buy that Focus here. Well, that is about to change. Seriously, with these new Eco-boost engines that Ford will be placing in just about every vehicle in their lineup, Ford may very well have not only the top rated cars in each class, but they will the most fuel efficient car in each class as well. Ford may not become the best seller in the world, but I believe, quite firmly, that they will surpass GM in sales by 2012.
The ride in a VW is rough - like a jeep. It's fun the first couple of months but after that your body takes a beating and it gets old pretty fast. Toyota is the way to go. They are spending billions on technology and will continue to be on top! No worries with Toyota - the most reliable ride on the road (and Lexus).
ha what were you driving? My 02 1.8t Jetta runs like a charm and it has 80,000 miles. I own a 2008 Audi a4 and a 2002 Jetta and they are by far the most comfortable rides I've ever driven. My wife has a Ford Fusion and the ride quality in it sucks.
Also people always label VWs as problem prone, but I've never had any major problems besides replacing the coil packs every once and a while and some minor electrical issues. It's much better than what happened in the Fusion we own, its transmissions already having issues. And someone before said that they were mad at VW for not paying for a new engine when their Tbelt broke at 90,000?? Are you stupid, I wouldnt honor it either. You should be taking your car in for regular maintainence and tune ups. Also Idk which VW you were driving, but my Jetta's Timing belt interval is 80,000 miles, you should have had it looked at if it was going to fail soon. VW's are quality products.
Toyota is gong the way of GM. Look for the industry to be dominated by newer players, like Tata in India, and whoever learns from GM's bet ideas in China.
Toyoto. This auto maker company may be having minor problems now buty they will fix them whatever they do. Cars are the main source of income for Japan, they are not going to lose it.
The"Buy American" means just that? How do you think the US got into this economic mess? does Toyota assemble cars here? Sure but you are missing the big picture. What do you think a nearly $1 trillion trade deficit a year does to this nation? How much better off would this nation be if all the ports were closed tomorrow? Would there be some adjustments? Sure but in the long run the US would be $trillions of dollars better off!
I’ve driven Dodge, Ford, Toyota, Honda, and VW Jetta. WV Jetta was the worst riding experience I had, shocks were horrible. I don’t see how they’ll be No. 1 down the road. And just look at the interior and engine of Dodge or Chevy and you’ll notice the cheap material all around. I believe American brand cars have been purposely assembled of low quality to support the hardware industries and garages. How hard it is to take clues from successful Japanese brands and come up with something solid? Toyota are ok and Camry is a good car but I prefer Honda for superior quality. Honda Accord for example drives as smooth as expensive BMWs but last a lot longer, with better fuel efficiency, and for a lot lower price. I’m surprised there is no mention of Honda here. And yes they are made in U.S. In my experience Honda Accord is the best car for its price. However Ford is the only American brand that is taking serious steps to enhance quality and looking innovative. I will browse for a Ford but will always take my Honda when I hit the highway.
Lawrence MC. It's clear you’ve worked for a lot of dealers and brands. Most line mechanics tend to stick with a brand or two to keep their expertise up to date with that brand or at least the corporate brands. Looks like you can’t stay at any one place too long for whatever reason. I was always a Chevy (GM) guy until the lack of quality and the “ho hum” attitude at the dealership service drove me to Toyota. I and my family have purchased Toyota and Lexus since 1990. After 10 vehicles over 19 years I can honestly say and I quote “ they just run and run without any major problems” and the service after the sale is far better and very customer friendly. They actually want to solve any issues that you may have instead of passing you off until the factory warranty expires and then: hang on to your wallet.
I had a Beetle in 61,73.79,I love it then I moved to AZ ,AC you know I got Nissan old ,it was good ,then I got old truck Toyota ,130.000 mil ,and still going ,then I got New Toyota Corolla 2004 ,well what a surprise ! after 28.000 mil ,my clutch went out ,I had 2 warranty's ,and they sad NO "it your fault !how can it be my fault,I drove nothing but stick shift ! I complained to Toyota they offer to pay for parts but labor no ,the labor was 1.600$ so I sad "NO ,I'll never ever walk in your dealership ever ageing " then I was in hit and run ,and they did repairers ,I went 13 time ,for them to do it over it always something ,it a mess ,yes I would go beck to WV ,if I could afford to get a norther car ! I finally got my clutch fix by Toyota Mechanic ,in his home for 600 and he told me "they sure don't make them like they use to "
vw, vw, vw!!! i have owned volkswagons since my first car 22 years ago. my first was a cabriolet and boy did i have with that car. then a jetta or two. now i have a new passat and would not trade it for anything. volkswagon, great cars and great customer service!
Toyota has had a long history of success which they have earned through careful business planning, quality control, blood, sweat, and tears. I am sure they will keep their position.
After all, they went head-to-head with the Largest automaker in the world and beat them (long time ago according to GM financial execs).
The question is what company has the right corporate culture to be the leader in the future. This is Toyota! VW might have the numbers today, the company however is German and has similar problems as the US companies, that is unions and government regulations. VW is owned in part by the German government or a state this alone will influence their business just like Obama Motors GM will never get free of the influence of whoever tells GM what to do today.
This is not about what car I drive, this will always be an American car.

Honda should be #1

I do enjoy my Toyota 4runner and my Tacoma double cab very much . But the gas mileage is not very good (16/20). Great vehicles though.
I am tempted by the 2010 VW Golf TDI ,great looking car ,good sized and mileage 30 city and over 40 hwy! Plus great safety and sensible technology .
I think all of the car manufactures are making a better product now and the choices are harder than ever ,consumer is the winner in all of this .
I actually do not care who is the rated the best. Toyota's trucks don't have the power to pull large RV's so for now, Dodge gets my business.
as for the wifes car, around town and work, any small auto, ( except Ford) will do just fine.
as for me, i get 50 miles to the gal. on my motorcycle and it will last another 10 years.

It certainly would NOT include the nearly 3 million vehicles imported from Japan, including every Prius, every Scion, most Lexuses.
What he means when he says "BUY AMERICAN" is anything built by the UAW, over inflated wages, crap ass work ethic and a work force with an over inflated sense of entitlement.

Funny, I never associated any products from China with reliability, much less quality.

The US auto-related deficit with Japan is a greater dollar amount than the TOTAL trade deficit the US has with all but three countries.
Not on the list, but I will stick with Subaru, forever.
