Deficit could cause more IRS audits, experts say

With the federal deficit topping a record $1 trillion and rapidly on its way to nearly doubling by this fall, the government desperately needs to squeeze out every tax dollar it can find.

Income tax on individuals is unconstitutional anyway, the 16th amendment did not give the government any power to tax individual income. If more people knew this, and I was sure I could get a jury to acquit me, I'd stop paying.

I have been a juror on a federal tax case, and I did find the woman guilty of fraud, but she falsified documents to get a return she was not entitled to. If it were a just a case of nonpayment, I'd sit on a not guilty verdict until the judge declared a mistrial due to a hung jury.

This country needs to stop taking federal taxes illegally from its workers, create a federal sales tax to replace it (which would be legal under the 16th amendment), and make the IRS do what they were created to do which is enforce and collect taxes on corporations.

WraithGT- I agree. The reasons there isn't a mass revolt is because of ignorance and fear. Most are ignorant of the law and fearful of being put in prison. They pick people off one by one. The media is also complicit. They make sure to highlight the, "tax protestors," defeat at the government's hands but fail to report the many defeats of the government. If people had to pay their taxes as a monthly bill, just like paying your mortgage or light bill, the revolt would start tomorrow. People would see how much of their wages(sweat property) is given to the government. People would see that taxes by far is their largest bill.

Some argue, "but what about roads, schools, police etc." That argument has no grounds because those things are paid through other sources, ie property taxes, fuel taxes etc. Income taxes basically services the interest on the national debt, all payable to private bankers through the IMF and the Federal Reserve. See Grace Commission.

Anyone notice that the Federal Reserve and the income tax came into existence around the same time. Our country went bankrupt in 1933, 20 years after the creation of the Federal Reserve, a function we were sold they would prevent. We have been in receivership ever since. Tim Geitner is the receiver of the bankruptcy for the IMF. Every man, woman, child and all real property in this great country is collateral against the debt to private bankers.

I could go on. We have been sold into debt slavery slowly for almost 100 years.

And by the way, how about auditing all of those "Too big to Fail Corporations" that were bailed out with TAXPAYER DOLLARS that are known to have all kinds of off balance sheet assets?

Oh and lets not forget about auditing ther CEO'S who multi-million dollar bonuses with taxpayer dollars).

and what about auditing the Federal Reserve itself. There was a recent report of $9 trillion in off balance sheet money that could not be accounted for.

Is any of that ever going to happen? No way.

So IRS - then you can go and send your nice little letters out to everyone in Washington that has not paid their taxes or better yet - probably is behind in paying their taxes.

Lets start with all the Senators and Congressman who have not paid their taxes in how LONG???? Go get them and their interest for being late. And then give me the total amount that you collect.

Maybe start with the SSA and ask why they had a $700,000. tax payer funded weekend get away to releive stress for their employees? It would seem to me if the Obama administration, via ACORN is raising hell over AIG's employee bonuses, our federal government shouldn't be spending money for weekend get a ways; when nearly 600,000 people a month are losing their jobs. If they switched to a sales tax this problem would diminish vastly, since all the revenue would be collected from a limited number of retailers instead of all the schmoes who can't do math ( or cheat ).

Democrats will never support a flat tax / fair tax because they wouldn't be able to shove a bat up everyones' *** for making "too much".

Could you imagine going to buy groceries and the cashier asking your yearly income in order to compute the sales tax? NO WAY. People would say thats absurd, why should I pay a different percentage... but thats EXACTLY what we do on our INCOME.

Agree, and agree, and agree. Politicians are guilty of cheating the government out of more taxes than all the rest of us put together. If we had an honest government they would be leaving those of us who only may owe a few bucks alone to go after the big fish. But that's a big IF.

So did you see Biden's logic? Its perfect for what we are seeing from this administration, "We must spend more or go bankrupt." Huh? What? This is a fool's logic and it is exactly the logic that will bring an end to the USA. Less than a 1/4 of the stimulous money has even made it to the marketplace but yet the Fed says the economy is turning around. So if this were your money, would you spend more and go higher in debt. Those of you who are responsible (and probably don't have huge credit card debt) would slow or stop your borrowing... But no, lets spend more and BUY our way back into the White House next term...

So to support our new spending addiction we need to encourage you socialist dogs by sending threatening letters from the IRS. Because without the fear factor we can not survive as a nation. These guys have got to go...they have no clue. They have learned nothing from history or for that matter the current budget problems in California (the poster child for the current spending trends in Washington)...

...and be on the look out for advertising on TV and Radio trying to establish the fear factor on the Health Care bill... I hope everyone is excited about the CHANGE we are experiencing...

Notwithstanding the authority of a State under the control of its citizens, the United States Constitution was meant to provide a fundamental right: — to be protected AGAINST excesses and oppression by the Federal government or an opposing faction, no matter their numbers, and, the right to choose to do or not do a thing with their property and labor — whether it is purchasing a product or service without the Federal government compelling the citizens to do that which is against their free choice, or the choice as to how much taxes to pay according to their means (in the opinion of each citizen and NOT according to an arbitrary opinion by a tyrannical Federal government corrupted by politics, faction, power and greed), and NOT to be punished for trying to create wealth for themselves and their State, such that, according to Hamilton, Madison and others, is the purpose that the principle method of raising revenue shall be by taxes on consumption and NOT direct taxes that may be required as a last resort such as during time of war when great amounts must be raised in short time:

"The AMOUNT to be contributed by each citizen will in a degree be at his OWN OPTION, and can be regulated by an attention to his resources. The RICH may be EXTRAVAGANT, the POOR can be FRUGAL; and PRIVATE OPPRESSION may ALWAYS be avoided by a JUDICIOUS SELECTION of objects PROPER for such impositions." (Hamilton, fp21)

"It is a signal ADVANTAGE of TAXES on ARTICLES OF CONSUMPTION, that they CONTAIN IN THEIR OWN NATURE A SECURITY AGAINST EXCESS. They prescribe their own limit; which can NOT be exceeded without defeating the end proposed, that is, an extension of the revenue. WHEN APPLIED TO THIS OBJECT, THE SAYING IS AS JUST AS IT IS WITTY, THAT, "IN POLITICAL ARITHMETIC, TWO AND TWO DO NOT ALWAYS MAKE FOUR." If duties are too high, they lessen the consumption; the collection is eluded; and the product to the treasury is not so great as when they are confined within proper and moderate bounds. THIS FORMS A COMPLETE BARRIER AGAINST ANY MATERIAL OPPRESSION OF THE CITIZENS BY TAXES OF THIS CLASS, AND IS ITSELF A NATURAL LIMITATION OF THE POWER OF IMPOSING THEM." (Hamilton, fp21)

If they need more revenue they should look at how to cut our so called government, people there don't want to work so they hire someone else to do the work and it goes on and on so now look how many government employee's there are, and the worst thing about this situation is they get pensions we the public pay for everyone of these people that retire, and when it's our time guess what there will be no Social Security, yet these so called government employees will get a pension more than double the Social Security we should have gotten....... So do you honestly think we owe any taxes, wake up, we pay so these people don't have to work. Oh this is a good one I was denied a years tax refund because I filed it late, they know they owe me yet they just kept my refund what's wrong with that picture, now if I owe they I will not pay it's that simple.

Why is the President not cutting back - and why is all of Washington not cutting back their salaries and expenses???????????

200 thats exactly what you get when "we the people " elected a section 8 president who now seems to want to fill all cabinet positions with section 8 nominees. On taxes try not paying them they can make your life miserable. The IRS has even hired bounty hunters to scrutinize your every deduction and when proof is provided you still have to fight them at every turn. This agency has way to much power, they need to be downsized. Hoow can anyone say you were cheating on your taxes when taxes are not even constitutional. If they (IRS) need to recoup 200 billion, why not eliminate tax loopholes for the filthy rich and all the wall street firms, banks and fortune 500 companies. Next go after all the former American companies that took their jobs out of this country and charge them a 33% tax to bring their products and services back into this country. And they (IRS) wonders why there is a 435 billion deficit in tax collections. Sofia from the Golden Girls said it best "You can't give this government money they don't know how to handle it"

Gov't has their nerve chasing after the majority of citizens, decent people who earn less than 60k a year and routinely pay most if not all of their tax liability. What about the filthy rich who've been hiding their money overseas for decades? What happened to the pursuit of all those Swiss bank accounts? I for one am sick and tired of paying my share and theirs too, year after year...

Was the gov't paid off to leave those accounts alone? What about all those other overseas bank accounts where the filthy rich lawyers, CEOs, etc. stash their money to avoid paying a fair share of taxes? That's where the REAL money is.

Karen is right and if you don't think so then you don't understand how these foreign back accounts work. They provide a safe haven for the rich to "hide" their money to avoid taxes. Only the rich have access to this and other tax shelters leaving the lower income people to foot the bill. The rich have access to deductions that we've never heard of and so even if they are taxed at a higher rate they still do not pay their fair share of taxes.

Now would that be torture by extreme methods (you know, being forced to listen to Janni or Jessica Simpson 24/7) or plain ol' water-boarding (which, according to the last administration was not really torture but more like aggressive coercion)?

cold; xactly what I was thinking. You would not believe what powers the IRS and the FBI have, personally I believe they do more harm to the average citizen than they do good. They can tell you who you called on 3 august 2000 and what you bought a the supermarket on 5 november 2006, or even why you went to see the doctor on 14 may 2001, scary isn't it. I almost went over the edge with an agent on one such experience, I guess it was her lucky day. I guess life under communism wasn't so bad after all.

Why? Because the little man likes getting screwed so much better, and the Govt., and IRS know that they won't stand up against them. They have blown their smoke up peoples asses for decades. All they have to tell most is: You are a nice citizen, a real patriot, bless your little heart. NOW, pay us you cheap bastard!

They go after the "little man" because more often than not the "little man" does not have to resources or the wear-with-all to go toe to toe with the "Man." Unlike the corporate fat-cats and upper echelon of society who can afford to hire tax attorneys to get them out it.

Is the IRS going to refund money that is overpaid?.. Maybe the IRS should go after the taxes owed by the illegals and the people selling drugs. They make good money. They should pay their taxes. O well, I am a good citizen. I will share the wealth just like my president wants me to, so my less fortunate brothers who won't work, won't have to.

Illegals pay very little in income taxes because they claim several dependants, they don't care about SS# because they aren't allowed to collect it. That doesn't mean that you get to keep the SS, they take it out of your account. I'm not sure what they do with it but the government is very good at making money disappear.

why doesn't the IRS show up on any job site to collect taxes? Illegals send billions back to Mexico every year. Any yes, they have wallets FULL of cash. I hate this nonsense. There are actually people on this board who feel sorry for them because they pay in with stolen, fraudulent, illegal SSN and don't get money back? OMG. What little if any they pay is by far made up for by the under the table money they are NOT paying any taxes on. Go to any airport in the U.S. and you can find illegals flying in family members from Mexico. I watched in amazement as one illegal who had apparently flown both his parents in from Mexico had to help dear old mom empty her jammed packed suitcases because apparently they exceeded the weight requirement. The suitcase was full of brand new clothes, mainly jeans probably 50 - 75 pairs jammed in the suitcase! Poor Mexicans indeed. This is one rule they could not get around. What a shame. And yes, the son had a wallet full of $100 dollar bills. Not as large as the Mexican gentleman who I saw in Home Depot while visiting my daughter in Cali. I have never in my life seen a wallet so stuffed with hundred dollar bills. When my mouth dropped open in amazement, his woman friend gave me a very dirty look. All I can say is that when my family immigrated here, we could not afford to fly people in. But, then again we did not have wallets full of cash either. These people breaking laws, using services and paying little if nothing into the system and still they have supporters. Ya, that's right, lets let them continue to get rich while the IRS comes after us. Incredible.

Exactly. Going after the small wage earner for the few bucks they may owe is not going to make that much difference. Go after the rich who owe hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars in back taxes. They are the real crooks. Leave us low income hard working people who help to make them rich alone.

Just think. If every American wage earner were to quit their jobs today and claim all the benefits they are entitled to; unemployment, welfare, food stamps, ADC, etc. And pay no taxes, Just how long would it take for Washington to change their attitude?. Like real fast? The only way we will ever see any real change is if we all work together to take on the government beating them at their own game.

Former Vice president Dick Cheny is one of the few politicians, who ,unlike Obama's people, made substantial charity donations and paid approximately 8 milion dollar or 50% of his gross income in taxes. The reason the Democrats and leftwingers want to raise taxes is because they don't pay them.

Hmmmm lets talk about the right to vote concerning the IRS and all Govt. agencies. It's common knowledge now that more people are taking than contributing tax dollars. So given that we have people not contributing but still have a say in how they get more free money by who they vote for. We all know our honest elected officials will court the electorate to stay in office so giving away money will keep them in office because the people they take money from have no political clout to vote them out anymore. I think we have a new minority - the taxpayer. Is the taxpayer being represented? I don't think so. The non taxpayer is being represented instead. Sounds kinda like taxation without representation to me. My vote isn't worth a lead penny under these circumstances. Lets face it - does the IRS go after people on the dole? Of course not. I say - You don't contribute - you don't get to vote. And those of you who think that may be unamerican - it didn't used to be.

Even with a cell phone they can and will get your number and continue calling. Having the number listed on the government "no call" list means nothing. I had a similar problem with a land line and now get the same calls with a cell phone. Anyone that wants to pay for it can get your life history from the internet including all phone numbers and your SSN. good luck.

All we have to do is get the Obama administration and Democrats in Congress to pay their taxes and we'll probably be in surplus., at least then they wont be so anxious to raise taxes if they have to actually pay them too.

The following article comes from USA Today online:

"WASHINGTON — The Justice Department said Monday that it is seeking information from Swiss bank UBS about U.S. taxpayers who may have used offshore accounts to avoid paying federal income taxes."The broadening investigation centers on UBS clients in the United States who may have hidden up to $20 billion in assets from the IRS. The Justice Department asked a federal court in Miami to authorize the IRS to serve UBS with a "John Doe" summons. The IRS uses a "John Doe" summons to obtain information about potential tax fraud by unknown individuals. If approved, the summons will direct the bank to identify U.S. taxpapers with accounts at UBS who did not fill out required tax forms. The Justice Department's move comes after Bradley Birkenfeld, a former UBS employee, pleaded guilty June 19 to conspiring to defraud the IRS by helping the bank's clients avoid U.S. tax reporting requirements."

Oh so Swiss bank accounts are now US bank accounts. Thanks for clearing that up.

Does everyone enjoy bashing something they do not understand?  The IRS gets money from cheats and others who do not pay their fair share.  If a person pays all taxes due that person cannot owe more.  For those of you who are mad at the IRS I either must presume that you all cheat on your taxes or that you applaud those who cheat because you do not have the courage to cheat yourselves.  I for one want the IRS to collect every dollar due and cannot believe that anyone wants less.

We have been audited twice. We have no stocks, we have a house and a very low 401k and about $10,000 in savings, no IRAs or CDs. We were told we got to much of a refund, $2500 and they needed to go over our documents. Thank goodness we use H & R Block and they took care of it but the letters and the phone calls believe me they were not nice and in no way were they willing to work with us. Even though Block was willing to go and take care of it the IRS insisted that we had to come so not only did we loose work time but the stress of the whole thing. We haven't changed anything we are doing and the interest on the house goes down every year so we get less back but I have that figured out we will just take an extra $15.00 in fed tax out every payday that should really drive them crazy. They should tax the money the illegals send to their home country as I understand it it is in the millions that should help. As always just my opinion.

I have witnessed many of the IRS strong arm tactics first hand. While the whole taxation of private wages debate is arguable, the IRS usually stops at nothing to get "it's" money. Believe it or not though, it can be rather tame compared to some of the state and local institutions.

You hit the nail on the head! I know a lawyer who used to work for the IRS, If you make too much , they wont go after you because you can fight it, if you make too little, what's the point? They go after those with money they can grab but not enough where you can afford to fight them, and the IRS efficiency reports are based on how much money they "recover", if you don't like it you can always appeal and they will investigate and find themselves innocent, or then go to their little kangaroo tax court where the judge is also an employer of the IRS,Flat or fair tax and no IRS anyone?

Thanks ObamO, spend us to the brink of bankruptcy then turn your IRS hounds lose on us. ObamO was the biggest mistake this country has ever made, we would have been better off to have had a random drawing of all legal citizens and picked a president that way. Economically the guy is a complete idiot!

Well like I've said, he may be a lawyer, but to my knowledge you don't even need a basic economics course to get into law school. Again, homeboy has done the equivalent of bringing a bag of marbles to a chess tournament.

We're in Trouble. Great idea, random drawings. Make it like a lottery. Winner gets to be president for a year and gets half the proceeds as his salary. Each state could hold a similar lottery for the senate and house seats. We couldn't do much worse than the way we have been doing it. Works for me.

Bobba, like Linda above, I've been the victim of IRS audit that found no faults and no new taxes owed, but trust me it's personal hell, and they don't care. My accountant said that the audit was probably triggered because we had made more charitable contributions than in the past and above average for our income level. Now, thanks to Obama's uncontrolled spending, more innocent people can experience the joys of an audit.

When will We The People, especially the Middle Class, have to keep carrying these pieces of crap? Many Americans are getting mad. It's not a few either. Yes, how about starting with the administration in the white house and the tax cheats on Obamas staff. Seems there ought to be a great deal of tax cheaters there to choose from. We need a citizens revolt against all of this government in Washington. Both parties are so morally bankrupt and they are making lfe so meaningless to the average citizen now. there is not citizen control now of our own lives as government has taken over every phase of who we are and what we are now. Lets have more tea parties and remove the bastards forceably if necessary as they are only destroying everything this usa once stood for.
