i for one am pulling for gm and chrysler and ford to be highly successful. i have always owned american made vehicles, mostly trucks. the japs can't touch american made trucks.
We just bought 2 new Toyotas, Obama Motors had nothing that came close in comparison, almost went with Ford but Toyota still had the better deal. Fortunately we could pay cash and got great deals since we bought 2 at once.
To bad Obama Motors.
Toyota has the only truck made entirely in the USA.
Our Obama Motors employees now government employees?
What happens when they go on strike (and they will), who'll represent the taxpayers and will they do it with integrity?
I think independentbychoice should be commended. The article says that quality is at near parity with Holy Toyota. My family has always bought American, and we've never suffered for it. I know the Big 3 have made some real crap over the years, but they've always made good cars, too. For those of us who gave a damn about our country, there have always been good cars to buy, and they're just getting better.
All that notwithstanding, what really pisses me off are the so-called "patriots" who will now refuse to buy a GM car because doing so might help make the Obama administration look good. These people's eagerness to see this country fail makes me sick. independentbc, you are OK in my book.
you state "toyota has the only truck entirely made in the USA."
what are you smoking? some ford, chevy and dodges are made entirely in the USA too. my 08 silverado was built in roanoke indiana with a parts content of 85% US made parts.
before you spout off about something maybe you should know what you're talking about.
The issue, in part, with the American economy is that Americans who have the money will not buy American. Far too much subjectivity. Class warfare. Plain old BS.
Too much concern over DESIGN and being cool. A vehicle is something that moves people from one place to another. Too much concern with WHO is watching and what they THINK.
I owned two GMs, and although I followed maintenance recommendations, both died before 7 years and 100,000 miles. I'm a happy Honda person now; not paying union wages and legacy costs for that Honda was just icing on the cake.
Proamerica you need to change your name! Why the hate? GM sold 9300 Camaros just in June! And many more new cool cars are on the way - they get it after wasting almost 3 decades. As for Chrysler, the designer of the 300 has designed a car that if it gets to the showrooms will blow those boring little asian boxes a frigin way! Here's a much better written article on whats going on in the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/business/10auto.html?_r=1&hpw
Toyota Tundra is made entirely from US made components, not parts from Mexico or Canada or Venzuela or some other 3rd world country like Chevy is. Get your facts straight before YOU start spouting off. And those parts were made by americans, unless some illegals supported by your Obama buddies snuck over the border and got jobs here.
Japan may own the Brand but americans built the Tundra.
Proud to buy AMERICAN made trucks!
I worked for Chevrolet in the 80's, and it made real crap, I spent most of my day doing warranty work, that means fixing assembly line screw ups. Celebrity, Citation, S-10, the only decent car they offered was the new Nova, oops, that was a camoflage Toyota. The Sprint was a pretty good little car, oops, Suzuki. Okay the Chevy Luv did okay, oops, Mitsubishi. Well the '83 Corvette was nice, oops, never made one, just left over '82's.
GM should have gone through bankruptcy without bailout funds, if it can't cut it, good bye. At least Ford did the right thing and went forward on its own. Not supporting Obama's bail out for GM is not anti-american, making someone else pay for your mistakes is.
Let's see how well the government car builder does with the union running it, how long until the taxpayers have to pump more money in to keep it alive.
Interesting letter I received yesterday 7/8/09. It is really about "NOT" taking care of our "OWN" and shipping more of "YOUR" tax dollars over sea's. We will "NEVER" see any recovery "EVER" if crap like this continues to go on! Please support your fellow American (Dem, Rep, or Ind) and take a minute to drop your people in Congress a letter objecting to this outrageous act. By the way, this is exactly the reason I will never buy any GM product again!
Back ground: Stillwater mining is in a small town in Montana. Losing the GM contract will essentially cripple their economy, add to the unemployment numbers, close a town, take taxes from State & Federal government, and boost welfare.
Attached please find a letter and press release from Frank McAllister, Chairman and CEO of Stillwater Mining Company. Stillwater is the only U.S. producer of palladium and platinum and is the largest primary producer of platinum group metals outside of South Africa and Russia.
General Motors has petitioned the bankruptcy court to terminate outright the Stillwater Palladium and Rhodium Supply Agreement. A very troubling aspect to this move is that Stillwater has learned GM plans to continue its agreements to buy palladium from producers in Russia and South Africa.
As Frank McAllister states, "We certainly recognize that the current economic downturn has decimated the automotive industry, forcing GM and others to make some difficult choices. At the same time it seems disingenuous to me, during a period when preserving American jobs is such a high domestic priority, that GM, while receiving immense financial support from the U.S. government, would elect, as I understand it, to continue its supply agreements with foreign palladium suppliers while seeking to terminate an agreement with the sole U.S. miner of palladium."
As per Mr. McAllister's letter, we ask that you contact your congressional delegation and let them know of your concern with GM's course of action. Also attached for your reference is a letter from Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner regarding this matter.
Secretary Geithner and Director Summers:
I have been advised by Stillwater Mining Company that General Motors Corporation intends to nullify its existing Palladium & Rhodium Supply Agreement with Stillwater, and that on Friday, July 3, 2009,
General Motors formally petitioned in bankruptcy court for authority to reject the Agreement.
I further understand that Stillwater had been negotiating in good faith with General Motors for over nine months right up to a day or two before the filing, and in so doing, made adjustments requested by General Motors, and reached agreement on two interim contract modifications.
I have also been informed that the Stillwater Supply Agreement with General Motors includes provisions that guarantee a minimum purchase price for palladium when the price falls below a stipulated level, that these price "floors" were not an issue between the parties, but that, due to the downsizing of General Motors, Stillwater was advised there simply was no further need for its palladium.
What offends me the most, however, is that while attempting to cease entirely its business withStillwater, the United States' sole mine producer of palladium, and simultaneously accepting billions of dollars in taxpayers' money, General Motors intends to continue to honor palladium supply contracts with suppliers from outside of the United States.
You are likely aware that Stillwater has or will file an objection with the bankruptcy court and has contacted its elected representatives. As Co-chairs of the Auto Task Force I want you to be aware of my objections to the proposed action described above. Not only will the decision be harmful to a good Montana business, but it flies in the face of national efforts for economic recovery.
Volt's their hydrogen car and it appears it may be outdated already and hasn't even gotten off the assembly line.
Check out the MRI technology. Why pay for hydrogren when you can use compressed air?
Sorry guys, I'm not in the market for a new car and with the price of new cars I doubt I'll ever buy another new one. Even if I could afford one I would not buy from a government controled company or one controlled by the union.
They have made some decent autos over the past years. The govt and a lot of larger companies have kept them alive with their fleet purchases. Buick has developed a following that is admirable. Give them a chance (I don't own nor have I ever owned a GM auto - or Chrysler) maybe they can shun the labor issues and develop a good auto of the future. with the cap and trade they will end up producing in other countries - not the US - without the burden of taxes, carbon requirements, and labor costs. But WTF, eh?
I'm looking for MPG and Value. I'm done buying 40K autos. I would like something AWD but could live 2WD. Seats 5 4Dr. Under 20K and gets 30+/20+ mpg. Cause I've got all kind of options down the street. As for crossovers I think the battle will be weight because it all comes down to MPG, I think SUVs are dead. We'll always need big pickups for work and towing. But bring back the small 4 banger pickup like the Luv. I think country kids want a pickup but not the low mpg of the full size. What would be nice would be a 4Dr Luv. with say a 2L. I would buy that. A 4dr small pickup, seats 5. short bed with a canopy.
Am I the only one bother by the Ford Fusion Hybrid that claims it has the highest hybrid mpg made in America. Note that Both the Fit and Yaris are manufactured her and have higher mpgs. So we are getting very creative. Because the only reason it can say that is because of the stalled economy. If not for that both Toyota's and Honda's hybrid American plants would of come online months ago. Come on Ford start sending your 50 mpg 1.3L turbo deisel euro autos here. I'll be down to trade in my Jeep for a Ka in a heart beat.
Chevy the hope of GM... you can NOT be serious. They have the ugliest vehicles ever... the Malibu looks like a competitor with the Edsel for dumbest design of all time.
Who is doing their design work... one of those 12 year old kids that doodle cars in school all the time instead of getting an education.
The seats are atrocious... and the mechanics are abysmal.
I wonder if the Govermnet fleet will be 100% Chevys? ha ha ha ha ha
For G.M. (Government Motors) to be successful they should start looking into building the plants for the next generation cars here in the U.S. instead of China, Russia, and Brazil. G.M. also needs to pay decent wages to allow for those Americans working on their lines to live comfortably and have money to buy the things they need. They can use all of the cheap labor they want, but at the end of the day who buys the cars that they produce? "We The People", that's who. We are the largest consumer nation on the planet and I don't see the Chinese, Russians, or Brazilians, buying new cars while making $2.50 and hour.
Obama needs to spend more time working for Americans and getting the jobs back here to America. This is the only way that the economy will ever improve.
The very same ones that Demopublicans and Republicrats have been helping to move out of The United States for the last 30-years.
The two-headed one party system we have here in America must go. Americans must stop this Demopublican vs. Republicrat in-fighting. It only serves to keep us separated and from becoming the voice of "One We The People".
Now the Senate is trying to block S.604 which is Ron Paul's bill to audit the Federal Reserve. H.R. 1207 has well over 250 co-sponsors in the Congress and it looks like it may pass there. Bernanke has stated that if the Federal Reserve is audited it will bring about a depression. What kind of statement is that? The Federal Reserve is no more federal than Federal Express. It is a conglomeration of bankers who control our monetary debt based system, and most of them are foreign. Demand support for H.R.1207 and S.604 especially with Biden saying a second stimulus package is needed. More money for the Federal Reserve, insurance corporations, and investors? When are "We The People" going to make our voices actually heard?
A vote for a Demopublican is a vote for a Republicrat - just as a vote for a Republicrat is a vote for a Demopublican. "We The People" must get past this paradigm.
China is now the largest car market in the world, and Brazil is one of the top markets in the world. So I guess you need some facts. Also if you ever read a whole article, you would know that GM is about to upgrade a number of plants, and make them flexible, something they are not right now.
Maxemum has a good point there because you need to build your products in the market that you are selling them to gain local support (as Toyota did in USA), it's cheaper, etc. and all car companies do that. Why do you think BMW is trying to produce so many vehicles in the US nowadays?
Are you serious? Have you seen the new/old Prius or the Insight? Compared to those the Volt looks great. I won't buy one but then again I don't drive appliances.
wait until you see Obama Motors' new single seater commuter car, it's called the Urinate, it's just for pissing around town, it comes in only one color, Zest, that's right, lemon yellow. They borrowed technology from Honda, it's guaranteed to start on the first pull everytime.
Rocco- I'm with you. Some people just enjoy being comfortable with the same old stuff with new wrinkles in the sheet metal. But, then I like the refreshing APTERA ($500.00 down) as an AMERICAN look, safer then a Crash-Helmet and more efficient then Pri-ass. One person, only needs that much transport. The "VOLT" technology is ONLY a step in the right direction, but I don't see it selling in a U.S.Economy that has NO-INCOME. G.M.'s timing is all wrong to introduce an expensive car. Look how many "Tesla Roadsters" are being sold at over $100k!........"total leap?" (Try EV1!)
I don't really see the Volt doing that well either because it is fairly expensive, has no "mystique" as the Prius/Insight have, and is late getting to the market. Also, I think that we should move on from gas/electric hybrids and incorporate diesel hybrids with different technology. There are other viable options out there, you know.
I like the front end of the vehicle, but the rear end is horrendous looking. For the record, I've never liked the look of the insight and believe Toyota took a step back with the latest gen Prius in terms of design. They all have to look a certain wa for aerodynamic reasons, but can't they look a little better?
President Obama has indicated he has ordered a fleet of GM cars for government workers. I don't know how this Chevy will fare internationally. There will probably be some sales in the U.S. But haven't you been listening to what a large part of upset Americans are saying? GM no longer represents America, they have become a symbol of politics and government interference on the tax payer's dime. You can throw all the money and perks and change the logos and market this all you want, you still can't force us to buy it!
I wonder how that order makes Ford feel. Oh wait a second, Ford didn't take any government money but now they have to compete against the government to sell cars. Does that make any sense to anyone. Obama has now put a company at a disadvantage in order to save another. The Government controlled bankruptcy for GM has further harmed Ford. Doesn't sound fair to me
That GM no longer represents America is America's doing, not GM's. Americans abandoned our own products out of our short-sighted sense of entitlement and our belief that we "deserved the best," regardless of (a) what that did to our country, and (b) whether what we were buying was actually better. Our #1 export is jobs, people, and we are to blame for the mess in which we find ourselves. I, for one, have no plans to stop buying American. Hate me for it if you like - doing the right thing is its own reward (that and the fact that there are some great American cars to be had).
"That GM no longer represents America is America's doing, not GM's." Surely, you jest! GM is the one who has kowtowed to the UAW for all these years. As a result, GM dug its own grave! They should have been allowed to re-organize through bankruptcy, which would have brought the pay scale back down to earth. If the union members don't like it...tough. They had to know that they have been getting over for a LONG time. If they were not smart enough to bank some of that exorbitant pay, then I say let them suffer like everyone else is right now. I currently own a Chevy pickup and I really like the new Camaro but I will NOT buy another vehicle made by GM for as long as GM stands for "Government Motors"! That leaves me in a dilemma about how to replace my truck when the time comes. I want to buy American but I have never liked the way Fords drive. I am as patriotic as anyone but my patriotism has to do with the great capitalistic society created by our country's founders, NOT the European socialism being forced on us currently. I will not support any such efforts!
Since our $40+ Billion GM bail-out could have bought around 1,600,000 Chevy Malibu's, maybe we could offer them as lottery prizes to anyone who paid taxes last year. The taxpayer gets something back and Chevy gets to advertise it as "the best selling vehicle in the world".
Except we don't get anything in return for that money, do we?
OLDEFARTE- HA! Very Zen! Dave in NM-The APTERA is 100% American and IF we can get them out of (Bankrupt) California ALL imports will suffer. (EVEN all the design & engineering was done in California! As GM well knows.) So, keep your thought! Buy AMERICAN.
you are wrong. ford had the good fortune of running out of cash before the credit crunch hit. they were able to mortgage all their assets while credit was still available. that is the only reason ford didn't borrow money from the government.
I don't get it, people say they will not drive a small car because they are not safe, yet they push the aptera with only 3 wheels? Do know why companies are designing so many 3 wheelers, because a 3 wheller is not considered an automobile, and does not have to meet the safety standards, they are class as a motorcycle.
Ford has done quite fine for it self without government help because they adapted and have a restructuring plan in place that has actually worked so far. If you were in Obama's shoes, would you honestly let GM die out, leave millions out of work directly/indirectly by closing of plants/dealers/offices, and leave the next generation of workrs less options for employment. It's not like Ford or Chrysler would be able to snatch up more employees for sure if there was no GM.
People, GM made horrible products, yes, but it would be worse for our nation if it died out. Obama is receiving too much criticism considering what he's dealing with. Bush destroyed the nation for 8 years, and it will take plenty of time to fix it. Do you honestly think McCain would be doing much better right now, or would you blame him for his decisions as well? Obama will fix most of this mess, just give him enough time and we'll be in better shape.
We have always bought and driven GM products. No more, after the way Obama and his people pushed through the SHAM bankruptcy which stole from bond holders we will never buy a GM product again. There is a FORD in my future.
My 2002 FORD "Escort" is a much better car then the Brand New Nissan "Altima" I drove (With all it's fancy bells & whistles just to increase the price). But, that was to TAURUS-like?
Thank God Toyota is now built in America by Americans with American parts. Next choice would be a Ford, even though a lot of it comes from Canada and Mexico, still better than Obama Motors will use a lot of parts made in China, Russia and Mexico and whatever 3rd world country Obama stops in next on his Apology Tour.
Captain stupid, do not forget the gold bars from Fort Knox your shipping to the homeland (japan), that are not coming back, if we as Americans do not start investing in America our children and grandchildren will all live in poverty, do we really want to live like Mexico where there is NO middle class and only rich and poor?
I've had most makes over the years. I had the worst luck with Chevrolet in the 60's, so I am not a big fan. I have had the best luck with Ford and Nissan. I have friends who have had the opposite experience. I am not worried about the warranty as much as I am the inconvenience of having to take a car to the dealer to make repairs.
I sincerely hope that GM and Chysler do well because other automakers need the competition. We have seen Toyota get complacent over the years and start producing cars that have not been as reliable as they have been in past years. For me, the most important thing is reliability, followed by performance, mileage and looks.
Geezer62- You are right! What happened to Toyota's slogan? Remember? "YOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT IT! Toyota" Now, it's more like: "YOU BETTER LIKE IT! Toyota"
I do agree, Toyota's products have slipped lately. The design is fairly ugly, and quality/reliability is down a bit. I know Toyota stated that it did not want to be the #1 automaker, maybe they believe it improves public perception if they're behind Detroit? Who knows, they probably did got complacent. The new Landcruiser, Highlander, Camry, Avalon, and Tundra look much worse than they did before. I like designing cars as a hobby so I do care about the looks. However, reliability, safety, and mileage are more important when it is time to purchase.
Obama's payback to the UAW for their support in the election. 50 billion dollars of our money, its not the American way. I have always bought Chevy's, but no more. Goverment Motors can sell their cars and trucks to the dummies who will buy them.
I think the obvious payback to UAW is the most odorous thing about Government Motors. Just because the Union Bosses have contributed millions of dollars to the Democrats, the union workers were given a major stake in the company they helped kill.
Exactly. My first car was a chevy, my current vehicle is a chevy, but no more! I will not patrionize a company owned by the government and UAW... O can give them ownership of a company as payback for the election, but they can't make us buy their products... After a year or two of government control, they won't be producing anything that works or anything the public would want anyway.
Disgruntled: Just like Medicare, infinitely more efficient than HMOs, and our Postal Service, which is the envy of the world? Don't buy the cars if they're no good, but if you refuse to buy them based on your assumptions alone, you are behaving like an ass.
I see you all bashing the unions, and there are problems with them, but without them most of you would still be making about $3 an hour. Don't kid yourselves companies won't give you anything without a strong push.
Medicare - going broke. Postal service - volume down year after year & losing money. Not exactly anything there to be envious about nor are the models of efficiency
the author of the story wrote this "the whole system left chevy dealers scrambling to compete for customers against gm's own saturn and gmc instead of focusing on beating ford and toyota." that was part of the whole problem. management wanted to beat the competition instead of wanting to make cars that the public wanted to buy.
so gm go ahead and make the cars obama wants you to make. i will no longer support you. i cannot support a communist administration. go ahead and change your logo. maybe you should change it to a hammer and sickle.
Obama already forced the CEO out, what makes you think that he isn't going to use Government Motors to push his GREEN WAVE through and have Government Motors build cars the public does not want. You think the Volt with it's old battery technology and no bigger than a bread box is what MOST Americans want? I'm sure Mr. Wagner would respectfully disagree that Obama doesn't want to be part of the day to day operations.
you think obama will make day to day decisions at gm? you think he will dictate what vehicles they will build and sell? if both of you really think that the dumbing down of america os in full force. it was a good decision to force waggoner out. he flew to dc in a private jet with no plans for the future viability of gm. he simply had his hand out.
would you loan billions to a man that had no plan but simply wanted money? i sure as hell wouldn't.
as far as the volt goes, it uses the same battery tech that the prius uses. the volt is simply a platform for future growth. an experiment. most won't be able to afford it. and frankly, i don't give a damn if richard waggoner would disagree with me or not. that stupid chump made his million dollar bed and now he's lying in it.
I think the dumbing down of America started with blind allegiance to polices with no thought of your own. I won't blindly accept what Obama says anymore than I would any other President. You must be the product of public education.
I say Obama will be involved in day to day operations and you say he won't but firing Waggoner was a good thing...point for me!
I say the volt is based on old Battery technology and you say it's the same battery as the Prius and it's an experiment that not many can afford and fewer want to buy.... Another point to me
george, the only point you have is the top of your pointy little cone head. the volt does in fact use the same battery tech as the prius. point for me. you never responded to what i said about richard waggoner, in fact, you called him mr. wagner. so am i to assume that you would lend billions to a man with no plan? double points for me. i have no allegiance to any political party or person. i do recognize the importance of the US auto industry to this nation. do you?
George, and what "old battery" technology would that be? Do you even know? Obviously you don't have a clue because the Volt will be using the most advanced Lithium-Ion batteries. The only car that beat them to this technology is the low volume Tesla ($100,000) sports car. All the other hybrids (including the Prius) use older (Nickel Metal Hydride) technology. Try to be informed next time you post.
A man with no plan?? You mean like closing Gitmo?? Trust him, heck we elected him. No I don't think he'll be in the day to day operation, but as a major stockholder I do think there will influence for their direction. Otherwise he may have to fire another CEO.
JR in HB- Try to do some Research on your own! Please check out APTERA.COM and see what other AMERICAN's have done Tesla makes a fine car, but (as you noted) "cost-Prohibitive" to MOST AMERICANS. The Aptera (PHEV) is $500.00 down, with the safety of a Crash-Helmet...what else could one adult living in the city need for transport?
You have basically the same management team, with very few modifications or sacrifice, you have the same union people with very few sacrifices.
Youn have Obam in the wings, you say he won't be involved uh huh first political issue , he'll be there. He spent roughly 30 billion proving thavotes and capaign payback was more important that the economy, not to mention trampling on most of the bankruptcy laws. Ford for me.
Obama does not have time to make day-to-day decisions; he's way too busy for that. Obama knows what he is doing (for the most part, anything's better than Bush), and he'll push GM and its execs to make quality vehicles. The Camaro, Tahoe, and Malibu look very nice now, just after the government put pressure on the carmaker to produce good products. Well, original design was prior to that, but they're headed in the right direction.
If you're a long-term fan of GM, and you won't buy their products because the President stepped in to ultimately assist the company you love, you are insane. GM was terrible for years compared to its competitors, and they needed assistance. Personally, I wish that they went straight to Chapter 11, but that's just me. We're in a huge mess because of Bush, not Obama. You try to fix our nation with all of its problems.
i will forever own and love imports, but there is no way in hell if I had no other choices in vehicle brands would i own a car from government motors or Obama Chrysler Motors, that moron will do to the automotive world what he is doing to this once great country...So if i had to make a choice of domestics..FORD by a long shot...
lmao. you say you'd own a ford if you had to decide between the domestics? guess what bud, the only reason ford isn't borrowing money is because they ran out of cash before gm and chrysler did. lucky for them, this was when credit was still flowing . they were able to mortgaged every asset they had. that is the only reason ford isn't borrowing from the government.
you also refer to "this once great country". maybe its not so great anymore because people, like you, have little faith in the products and people of this "once great nation." there are some very good domestic vehicles available. maybe you prefer boring, vanilla style, if so the imports would be perfect for you.
burns me? not at all. you are free to choose whatever vehicle you want. i find it a little ironic that you mention the decline of this once great nation in the same post that you state you will never own a domestic vehicle while imports are available.
WHOA! Others are VERY correct! You ain't seen Nuttin' yet! Toyota not EVEN close to APTERA. Check out "Aptera.com" for REAL change and ALL U.S.A. made. The scariest part will come with imaginations.
How has Obama ruined our country? We're you absent for the 8 years prior to Obama's election? Bush caused this mess because we seemed alright with Clinton. Whatever you may think of him as a person he did a pretty good job in office. Leaving the White House in good shape (economically speaking) is a success to me. When Bush left the White House, how were we doing? Bush got out just in time before more bad things happened during his term; I knew he was bad news when everybody thought that he was so great.
GM is hopefully moving in the right direction, as the years of substandard products seems to be over. They have some nice new products, but the court of public opinion is the hardest place to win...we'll just wait and see.
US automakers have been making such gas guzzling junk for so long that even though they may be getting their act together now, the perception is that the foreign automakers (including hyundai) make a better vehicle. I really hope the US manufacturers make a competitive product and start to show that we can still exist in this arena. Having said that, the UAW is complicit in dragging the US industry down. Auto worker's wages, beneifits, and retirement packages have, for way too long, been ridiculous. And for what? A 2nd rate car!  The only innovation I've seen is the Chevy Volt which may have the stuff to make a positive change...for a change. Â
The chevy volt will not compete with the Prius and the projected sales price is 40-50% higher.
I have driven a envoy for the past 6 years. It has been a outstanding vehicle. If America gets out of the SUV business I probably will buy a import. I find it interesting that our car zar keeps saying we build gas guzzling SUVs and America doesn't want them. Most of the imports introduced new SUVs this year. I guess they didn't read the memo.
Now that the Government will force Gm to make CAFE cars, that will not sell because they will not be making the cars or Trucks Americans want.GM is in a hard place and the Tax payer has just kissed 50 Billion good bye,due to Obama's love of the Union.
Have you seem the stupid cost extreme GM is toying with? The GM/Segway, two wheeled (couple thousand dollar) "People Mover" P.U.M.A...........what a silly waste of time to justify pay-checks! Then we see their best efforts going into what? A "VOLT" that, no-body can afford? Right! GOOD BYE GM and take A.I.G. with ya!
Chevy can compete any import, if they focus on the quality. Providing cheap and short longevity material does not help. They must make sure that all part suppliers are top notch, and do not cut corners (as has been the case-Â I have GM cars and I can see the quality is really poor)
Secondly the technology must be top notch. Volt with 40 miles range, $40,000 cost and a very bulky battery is not going to win customers. The volt should have minimum 100 miles range on electricity, priced around $20,000 and should have latest technology in battery like Tesla motor has.
GM must learn to not cut corners on their product lines, and must meet or beat others in top quality.
Um, doesn't Tesla just have like 800 lithium-ion batteries for its powersource? Not the greatest innovation I've heard of (just my humble opinion though). I've never been a huge fan of electric vehicles, but that's just me. GM should try to develop new technology instead of going after an established product like the Prius. They should have new technology that puts the Prius to shame!
Gosh, this thing (Volt) is ugly. Don't rely on me to buy this thing. It cost them what, $10 billion to design this thing and their 40-mile range batteries? And the thing is butt-ugly. It looks exactly like any other sedan around.
DUH!!!!!!! And that can DRIVE Detroit down much more the alot of cars, especially since my Uncle (that worked for Remy-Delco) designed a much more efficient battery in the 70's!!!! (It was barried......FAST by GM).
I think all the blowhards with the negative comments should try to come up with something positive on how they would run GM, Ford or Chrysler if they had the chance.
The Baron - and why wouldn't we - since Obama is the one demanding GM makes dinky toys? Why? - If they aren't going to sell. Toyota etc. have already cornered the market on dinky toys for city folk who never plan on travelling the country by car. The last thing we need is dinky toys. Before you talk about GM/Chyrsler going bankrupt - remember Ford didn't - and their top-seller and the USA top seller is the F150 series.
If Bush and Obama had made GM go through a routine bankruptsy verses this government back bailout, they could have dumped the UAW and had a chance of being competative. The way we went about it will require us to prop up GM for an eternity.
Hey Government Motors...Analyzie THIS. Unless you're going to GIVE me a car since I'm on the hook for your "bailout"...don't count on seeing my shadow walking your car lot. How DARE you ask for my business when I'll be getting taxed to death for the rest of my life just to keep you afloat in what amounts to nothing more than a WPA project.
Jim T - I would make big V8 - gas guzzling pick-up trucks. After all Ford 150 series is the top seller, followed by GM's Silverado - #2. Unless you plan on living and never leaving an urban area - 'this is a big country, we have big roads, families don't fit into @!$%#boxes and no one wants to be uncomfortable and squashed up in a dinky toy.'
I have sold GM cars and trucks for 19 years, I am a believer in the products I sell and I am very proud to be a GM salesman. Part of the problem with GM verses the Forgien car market is the bias opinion of Consumer reports. They never have anything to say good about American cars. I have personally seen and talked with owners that have American trucks That have over 400,000 miles same engine and transmission he bought brand new. I have a friend that puts over 200k on his trucks before he trades them. I have seen chevy cars come in with over 150k countless times for trade in on a new GM model. American cars are very well engineered and are great products to own. There was a article by consumer reports several months ago that said they were now going to make Toyota prove what they have always just took for their word it was good. Want to know the truth then google some of those forgien cars and put "Problems" with the google then you will see they are far from perfect.......
Exactly right Randy. As the article stated, "Chevy has been making legitimate strides in quality, but that has gone unnoticed by too many car buyers. In the most recent J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study, which measures "things gone wrong" in the first 90 days of ownership, Chevy scored well above the industry average, at 103 problems per 100 vehicles. Toyota scored 101, putting the brands at a virtual tie."
Unfortunately, most of the comments on here reflect the point that most consumers aren't smart enough and follow a mob mentality and don't take the time to research this on their own. They only continue to think foreign is better which is totally incorrect today!! Foreign car makers have gotten complacent and it is showing in their crappy vehicles. My sister has a Toyota Sienna that is in the shop all the time! It's the worst piece of garbage she has ever owned, but people are so brainwashed. It's time the consumer gives American autos and GM a second look and chance. They make some excellent products if people would only get their heads out of the sand! Don't kick someone when they are down. Buy American and keep American dollars at home and not going to Korea or Japan, etc.!
I think the author is right about the new GM's success depending on Chevrolet. More importantly is what models Chevrolet markets. From all the hype we have seen in the past few months I think too much emphasis has been placed on the Volt. We are not going to see the buying public quickly turn the corner and start buying plug in cars. Right now the technology is in place to produce gas and diesel small and medium size cars and trucks that will get great fuel economy and take us well into the future for a reasonable price. I would much prefer to purchase a vehicle that runs on gas or diesel and gets upwards of forty miles per gallon than spend twice the amount for something that hauls around a huge battery pack or has to be plugged in a couple of times a day. Another factor that will effect their success is how many nameplates they market. Would it not be smart to limit the number to five or six? One huge sedan (Buick or Cadillac) for the old folks, a small and medium size sedan ( Chevrolet ) for the younger family, a SUV (Brontosaurus extremus) for those who can't live without em, and a truck line (GMC) for folks who need trucks, and something sporty (Corvmaro) for the enthusiast. This tree hugger wants to see them succeed.
I agree with Snoop3. I won't buy anything made by the UAW. Right now the unions are pushing universal healthcare for us, yet making sure unions are exempt from paying for it. Today, they were demonstrating for cardcheck. They destroyed the car companies, the steel industry, and almost the entire airline industry. You want to see greed? Don't look at Wall Street, look at the unions.
I agree with Snoop3 as well, I want an american make vehicle, made by non-Union workers and assembled with parts only made in america by non-Union workers. Damn that would be 1 reliable cheap vehicle worth every penny and more.
anne, good post, I agree. Just wait , until Obama's favorite, the SEIU gets into their "rightful" position. The everyday citizen won't be able to go the bathroom without paying some sort of a fee. If only Carl Marx could see what is going on in this country he would surely give a salute to Obama... Haile'
All this hype on making tiny vehicles when over half the population is overweight. Should be fun. I wonder if it'll sell. I once had a teacher - grossly overweight. It was a riot to watch him crawl into his little dinky toy. My grandson has a nice red convertible corvette. I'm going to start driving it - it should be about the right size for the road.
GM needs to make more practical and affordable vehicles. 2 door coupes, cadillacs, and $30,000 plus vehicles will be there demise. the japanese are building practical and affordable vehicles. Their the same ol' company makin' the same ol' mistakes. New leadership is needed. Not to mention the fact that when they do build a affordable vehicle it looks gravely cheap on the inside. Oh and the trucks are too pricey when well equipped. We are in a financial downward spiral as a nation. Their over compensated leaderships idea of going green is making a hybrid that's twice the price of the other guys.
Hope they don't rely on me .....
Me either....
i for one am pulling for gm and chrysler and ford to be highly successful. i have always owned american made vehicles, mostly trucks. the japs can't touch american made trucks.
Independentbychoice,
you should be censored for your comment
jim,
why should i be censored? are you a titan or tundra owner? too bad, titans or tundras can't carry an american made trucks oil dirty used oil filter
These people's eagerness to see this country fail makes me sick. independentbc, you are OK in my book.
captain,
you state "toyota has the only truck entirely made in the USA."
what are you smoking? some ford, chevy and dodges are made entirely in the USA too. my 08 silverado was built in roanoke indiana with a parts content of 85% US made parts.
before you spout off about something maybe you should know what you're talking about.
Resize the '55, '57, '61, make them electric.
Hey Independent,
when did 85% become 100%?
NObama in 2012. CHANGE we need.
Subaru's loss is GM's gain. All the homosexuals will be trading in their Forester for a Camaro.
Attached please find a letter and press release from Frank McAllister,
Chairman and CEO of Stillwater Mining Company. Stillwater is the only U.S.
producer of palladium and platinum and is the largest primary producer of
platinum group metals outside of South Africa and Russia.
General Motors has petitioned the bankruptcy court to terminate outright the
Stillwater Palladium and Rhodium Supply Agreement. A very troubling aspect
to this move is that Stillwater has learned GM plans to continue its
agreements to buy palladium from producers in Russia and South Africa.
As Frank McAllister states, "We certainly recognize that the current
economic downturn has decimated the automotive industry, forcing GM and
others to make some difficult choices. At the same time it seems
disingenuous to me, during a period when preserving American jobs is such a
high domestic priority, that GM, while receiving immense financial support
from the U.S. government, would elect, as I understand it, to continue its
supply agreements with foreign palladium suppliers while seeking to
terminate an agreement with the sole U.S. miner of palladium."
As per Mr. McAllister's letter, we ask that you contact your congressional
delegation and let them know of your concern with GM's course of action.
Also attached for your reference is a letter from Montana Governor Brian
Schweitzer to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
BRIAN SCHWEITZER
Governor
YUP!!! Chevy surely help GM survive, The new 2010 Chevy model will call " Chevy Bailout"
WAKE UP!!! Turn off ABCNNBCBS and Fox News.

Maxemum,
China is now the largest car market in the world, and Brazil is one of the top markets in the world.
Why do you think BMW is trying to produce so many vehicles in the US nowadays?
used to own nothing but GM. now with the govt owning 60% shares you couldnt force me to buy one. and i wont buy an import so that leaves ford
if what i see is the "new" volt, God help the new GM. Same old tired designs!
rocco,
how is the volt the 'same old tired design?"
Are you serious? Have you seen the new/old Prius or the Insight? Compared to those the Volt looks great. I won't buy one but then again I don't drive appliances.
The Volt is a total leap! Those old hybreds are so last milenium. Ok so I can't spell.
wait until you see Obama Motors' new single seater commuter car, it's called the Urinate, it's just for pissing around town, it comes in only one color, Zest, that's right, lemon yellow.
The Volt will be a shocking failure.
Actually that won't be shocking but it's a good headline. :-)
Doesn't sound fair to me
George Spring -
Well Ford was offered government funds, but declined, that was Ford's choice.
Come on, Dave
I will not support any such efforts!
george and jim,
do either of you have any idea why ford didn't need to borrow any money from the government?
Since our $40+ Billion GM bail-out could have bought around 1,600,000 Chevy Malibu's, maybe we could offer them as lottery prizes to anyone who paid taxes last year. The taxpayer gets something back and Chevy gets to advertise it as "the best selling vehicle in the world".
Except we don't get anything in return for that money, do we?
Well, it was a notion.
How about the trillion + we wasted in Iraq, we all could have a car, health care and a house. Thank Bush for that one.
independentbychoice,
Ford didn't borrow government money because they are consistently adapting with their way forward plan.
Secondly, I think Mulally knew what would happen if Fords took government money.
max,
you are wrong. ford had the good fortune of running out of cash before the credit crunch hit. they were able to mortgage all their assets while credit was still available. that is the only reason ford didn't borrow money from the government.
THE FYTHELER,
I don't get it, people say they will not drive a small car because they are not safe, yet they push the aptera with only 3 wheels?
Fine by me, as long as you're buying American.
My 2002 FORD "Escort" is a much better car then the Brand New Nissan "Altima" I drove (With all it's fancy bells & whistles just to increase the price). But, that was to TAURUS-like?
Dave,
Thank God Toyota is now built in America by Americans with American parts.
Goverment Motors can sell their cars and trucks to the dummies who will buy them.
kflann,
I think the obvious payback to UAW is the most odorous thing about Government Motors.
Not exactly anything there to be envious about nor are the models of efficiency
john t-1119026,
And cars would still cost only a couple grand, and homes would too!
the author of the story wrote this "the whole system left chevy dealers scrambling to compete for customers against gm's own saturn and gmc instead of focusing on beating ford and toyota." that was part of the whole problem. management wanted to beat the competition instead of wanting to make cars that the public wanted to buy.
so gm go ahead and make the cars obama wants you to make. i will no longer support you. i cannot support a communist administration. go ahead and change your logo. maybe you should change it to a hammer and sickle.
cbrown,
obama will tell gm what cars to make? really? you are a total fool for thinking that.
Well, he decided who would run the company... I'd say that is pretty involved.
Indy,
Obama already forced the CEO out, what makes you think that he isn't going to use Government Motors to push his GREEN WAVE through and have Government Motors build cars the public does not want. You think the Volt with it's old battery technology and no bigger than a bread box is what MOST Americans want? I'm sure Mr. Wagner would respectfully disagree that Obama doesn't want to be part of the day to day operations.
disgruntled and george,
you think obama will make day to day decisions at gm? you think he will dictate what vehicles they will build and sell? if both of you really think that the dumbing down of america os in full force. it was a good decision to force waggoner out. he flew to dc in a private jet with no plans for the future viability of gm. he simply had his hand out.
would you loan billions to a man that had no plan but simply wanted money? i sure as hell wouldn't.
as far as the volt goes, it uses the same battery tech that the prius uses. the volt is simply a platform for future growth. an experiment. most won't be able to afford it. and frankly, i don't give a damn if richard waggoner would disagree with me or not. that stupid chump made his million dollar bed and now he's lying in it.
Another point to me
Thank you for making my points!
george, the only point you have is the top of your pointy little cone head. the volt does in fact use the same battery tech as the prius. point for me. you never responded to what i said about richard waggoner, in fact, you called him mr. wagner. so am i to assume that you would lend billions to a man with no plan? double points for me. i have no allegiance to any political party or person. i do recognize the importance of the US auto industry to this nation.
Ind
Your right.. imports are my style.. that burns you..oh well..
burns me? not at all. you are free to choose whatever vehicle you want. i find it a little ironic that you mention the decline of this once great nation in the same post that you state you will never own a domestic vehicle while imports are available.
Just Which great Country are you talking about. The one before Bush or the one after?
6sp,
i disagree. it's not over. it's only just begun.
time will tell.
Barry B.- The key word there is "MAY".
stormerF,
GM will not stop making trucks, America needs trucks.
NO, G.M.
Â
Right, SIX-SIGMA & FIVE-S quality would make a BIG difference for G.M.
Uh em, the Tesla cars cost 103k, you pay 60k more for 60 more miles battery life, by my math that is $1,000 a mile, a far cry from $20,000.
If they make something as stunning as my '57 Chevy or the new Camaro Z28, I don't care WHO builds it or who told who to make one. I'll buy one.
Counting on chevy? Like the Camaro? Forget GM, (Gay Morons). Thier "New" Target Market (gay men)
Will Be the Final nail in thier Coffin! Can you say "BANKRUPT"!
I also noticed a Chevy camaro AD just above the promotion of the new gay movie "Bruno"
The Car is one half yellow and one half nothing! Goodbye GM marketing Execs.
SAD, what a "Tag-line". Hey, maybe PEREZ HILTON will buy a "VOLT" that would fit right in with G.M.
I think all the blowhards with the negative comments should try to come up with something positive on how they would run GM, Ford or Chrysler if they had the chance.
..They would just mope, whine and complain and blame Obama on poor sales.
JIM
If Bush and Obama had made GM go through a routine bankruptsy verses this government back bailout, they could have dumped the UAW and had a chance of being competative. The way we went about it will require us to prop up GM for an eternity.
Hey Government Motors...Analyzie THIS. Unless you're going to GIVE me a car since I'm on the hook for your "bailout"...don't count on seeing my shadow walking your car lot. How DARE you ask for my business when I'll be getting taxed to death for the rest of my life just to keep you afloat in what amounts to nothing more than a WPA project.
The Government helped GM & Chrysler...I'd buy a Ford & if I don't buy a Ford...
Guess the German & Japanese cars look good...Made in America.
But the way the economy is going ...Cars may not sell..
But maybe the government will pay for Field Mice for Ms. Pelosi ...Dang!
I like Chevrolet products, but I still wish GM kept/made Pontiac the perfromance division.
Thanks
Randy M
Chevy isn't just a good car, it's the only car. A couple of my kids were concieved in the back seat of a 1937 chevy. We loved those fuzzy cloth seats.
I will never buy anything made by the UAW, PERIOD.
then move to japan
Randy
Just because the UAW sucks? That's no reason for me to move. You and the UAW should leave this country.
Randy, I guess we all need to move since many of the parts of the so called "American" cars are made over seas.
I ag ree with RandyM .
Your go girl! Now that's an American!
I'm 6' 218#'s. I sat in the new Camaro and found the cockpit very cramped. Hell, I had more room in my 62 Jag E type. What a joke!!!!!!!
Yeah, it was a hoot to see my TALL (6'3"), FAT (300LBS.plus) Band Director "SHOE-HORN" himself in his VW BUG. Poor Left-hand springs!
And that folks is really the big picture!
