Financial regulations proposed by President Obama would result in leaner and simpler financial institutions that don't carry the weight of the system on their marble columns.
In the President's campaign, he said that he wanted to give back the U.S. back to it's people. I have said before, that the ultimate goal is to get rid of the Federal Reserve Bank eventually. It should be to no-one's surprise that he is going to break down these other Bank's to get to his promise he made to the American people to give the country back to it's rightfull owner's. You will here from the "Rush" Nazi youth's that are not educated, and will continue to say negative things about the President, lie he is a Communist, etc..but keep this in mind, they are just programmed.

Your explanation of this issue is purely political and simply wrong. Actually, it was years of underfunding pension and other retirement benefits, failing to report those lack of payments as debt obligations. See when the Free Market is bastardized for twenty or thirty years, you lose sight of what it is actually suppose to be.
Free Market means making the best products (which they did not), make that product sell at an affordable price (which it did not) while paying workers the best available competitive wages and benefits (which they did not, wages sure yes, benefits was the sinkhole they create then ignored until it was too late).
Stop bastardizing what the Free Market means and pay attention to facts and the totality of current circumstances. Chrysler had a workforce they needed, dumping skilled workers and starting from scratch was not a good option, turn around time ballooned and became unmanageable for a recovery of the company. They needed to cut both wages and benefits for current workers AND a huge liability of retirees' pensions and health care coverage. That's how the workers got a piece of the company - as payback for debt owed PLUS having the workers share the risk moving forward with the revision of the future company which will be Chrysler Motors for the next 100 years.

The federal reserve is a private bank owned by international investors. The problem is that since 1933, when the US became bankrupt, they controlled the currency of America. Since they now own us, should we be giving them more power or should we rethink the current philosophies of modern money mechanics which is designed to ultimately fail through inflation. Whoever takes office answers to federal reserve which is the dominant force in the US. Whether youre a democrat, republican, liberal or conservative; we have only been addressing the syptoms and havent addressed the problem.

Not to defend Communism or Socialism, but the reason that we've got such a low opinion of these concepts is that they've never been fully carried out in a way that wasn't entirely perversed. There has never, and I do mean never, been a truly Communist government. In a Communist government, the government is still in the hands of everyone, much like in a democracy. All of the weight of political decisions is in everyone's hands. What we've seen up until now are governments that call themselves Communist in an effort to appeal to those that a Communist government would benefit, only to take the party into their own hands, make themselves a permanent "president," and the end result is a totalitarian dictatorship, which may or may not make SOME attempt to extend benefits to it's citizens. And by the way, the Nazi party in no way carried out anything even remotely considered Socialism - they were ultra-conservative, Fascist authoritarians. Not to compare Rush to a Nazi, but don't compare Nazis to Socialists.
As for TBTF institutions, take the saying "Corporations are people, too." People want to look at these companies as if to say that the market will ultimately regulate itself, and the government shouldn't intervene. Well, if a person kills another person, it's likely that a friend or family member will go after and kill the murderer if left unchecked. If no one could stop you from stealing, how many people do you think would do it? It would be nice to believe that people could trust other people to not take advantage of such things, and it would be nice if people didn't need to abide by laws, we didn't need a government at all, and everyone could get along and function without an established order. But we can't. Corporations are people, too. They need to be regulated to an extent just as everyone else does. They need to follow the rules and not be allowed to become these behemoths that can affect the lives of everyone on the planet that functions within our global financial system. The market will regulate itself only as well a person can regulate themselves. I'm not saying that we need a government takeover of business, the days of trusting the richest people in the world to not exploit their advantage over the rest of us to become richer should, at least, be recognized and considered.

Ron Paul is not the first to "Float" the idea of an audit of the Federal Reserve bank. It is my guess that this administration will put him in a position to orchestrate in the future when matters are more in order. President Obama suggested this, I believe in 06 and so have others. To try to put it in perspective, it is like to grab the (F.R.B), and getting it by the hair, and making the "pig" show where all it's "pimp's" are. It takes time, and silence is golden.

You can't have it both ways , if we are to protect the American people from having to bail out mega corporation and banking/financial institutions, their has to be oversight and the ability to control these institutions as they have shown(or at least some of the biggest) a complete lack of responsibility in their operations and risk. Look at the medicare bill Bush rammed through congress, this wasn't a bill for the protection of the American people but a guarantee of huge profits for pharmaceuticals by guaranteeing a no bid process for the cost of med's to the government. Whats happened the last eight years has been a accumulation of the last thirty eight years of dismantling of the oversight and protection of the American people from corporate America with the hopes of dismantling social security and any social program for the American people. Social security is a good idea , the people running it are the problem, If you give a banker money for your savings account for forty years and one day go to the bank to start withdrawing your money and their is none, are you wrong for saving money or is the banker a crook for spending your money? simplistic but about right. we are economically enslaved to these financial and corporate institution, low wages, less benefits,no job protection and yet asked to guarantee their profits and outrages bonus's for the corporate elite. Makes no difference if banks are "large" or "small". If the Fed. Reserve (controlled by the gov't) controls the money, you can be sure that the government will control commerce. By controlling commerce, controlling industry and controlling the money necessary to sustain business, the government will control everything necessary for free enterprise. Thus, no more free enterprise. If the government doesn't like you, you don't get the funds to start or maintain your business.
He, Obama has a plan. His plan is total domination of this country. He WILL rule us, by controlling everything.

Today fact is the German Democratic Nationalist Party is considered far right(or Neo-Nazis) in German Society. The National Socialist German Workers Party, as the Nazi's were known in Hitler's Germany did started out being considered a leftist organization. However by the time Hitler got done with the party they were far from leftist. Originally this party did call for things like full employment and medical coverage for all Germans. The problem was they did not consider all citizens German. You had to be a white Protestant Aryan male to have full rights in Nazi Germany. Nazi ideology stressed the racial purity of the German people. It persecuted and set out to destroy all populations deemed inferior or enemies of their cause: this included Jews, Roma, Catholics, homosexuals, the mentally and/or physically disabled, socialists, and communists. They were anti women's rights as well. The role of women in Nazi society was Children, Kitchen and Church. Until WWII depleted their male work force women had almost completely purged from the work force.
In 1930s Nazi Germany all power was given to the Corporations or employers. Workers were stripped of all rights. Trade Unions were banned as was collective bargaining and the right to strike. Workers even needed consent from their former employers to transfer jobs, ultimately taking away the right to quit a job. The largest Corporations were given exemptions from taxes giving them a huge advantage over any smaller companies.
The purged all leftist or socialist ideas and figures from their Universities their courts and so on. They were also a huge proponent of fundamentalist nationalism. Further they were allied and a huge supporter with Mussolini and Fascist Italy in their civil war against the Socialist.
So to take a handful of supposed social ideals they expressed and say that is what defined them instead of everything else is disingenuous at best. Yes it would probably be more on target to call Rush Limbaugh a Fat Fascist instead of a Nazi. However I can see how the ideologies that Rush spews based on ethnicity and gender and his tendency towards fundamentalist nationalism can get him branded Hitler like and a Nazi. He uses the same inflammatory arguments on the poor and disenfranchised in the USA today as Hitler did in 1920s and 1930s Germany. The government's role is to follow the Constitution. It is NOT to follow the feelings of a group in a party, especially when that group is attacking the foundation of this country, the Constitution, on a daily basis.
Whether BO is a communist, marxist, socialist or any other 'ist' is NOT the question. The question is how and why did the American people elect so many into national office who are anti-American? There are many who keep trying to force today's problems onto former administrations, and media that is doing all it can to present that as the 'news' and the truth. However, there is only one administration in US history that has taken over private companies, created "Czars" and established unsustainable debt. That was NOT Bush or Clinton or any of the others, just Obama. There has never been another president who went abroad and attacked the US as Obama has. There has never been another president who has buddied up with terrorists and dictators as Obama is doing. In short, we have never had a president who was a traitor to this country before, nor one who is doing everything possible to destroy it. You can pretend that this is not happening or pretend that 'it takes time to fix the problems' but the fact is that he has created more and bigger problems than he 'inherited' and has no intention of 'fixing' anything other than the downfall of the US.

I agree with the premise that using the excuse of too big to fail as a way of giving/getting Federal money is wrong- let them fail- Let GM ,AIG etc fail. On the other hand, this idea of limiting size scares me. At what point do we say a company is too large? and who decides? Is this something done on a purely economic basis or will Politics come into play. Lets see- you are a big company and expanding internationally- but you do not like Unions- MMMM you are getting too big so lets limit your size. It was not innocent, they knew what they were doing. After the S&L scandal a law was written to cover such actions and also the firing of board members and CEO's. My problem is not that he has involved the government in these institutions, its that they have given these institutions way to much leeway.these companies have threatened the stability of the United States economy through fraud and pure greed, now if you think that is to much government control then how would you stop this from happening again and what would have you have done if the crisis is as real as was stated? Those who disagree with Obama's recent policy decisions are entitled to their opinion. This is why we live in America. As citizens we forget that we founded this country based on many principles. One belief includes freedom of speech.
Republicans who are so vehemently opposed to the policy decisions are not attacking the decisions analytically; however, they are attacking the character and integrity of a public official who has taken a pay cut to serve the citizens of America. Conservatives should try analyzing the integrity and character of Rush Limbaugh, Neil Cavuto, Glen Beck and other Republican officials who have corrupted their party. The term "conservative" no longer describes the fiscal responsibility of the Republican party. Now, individuals equate the Republican political party with a religious denomination. These same individuals not only condemn the Middle Eastern countries' implentation of traditions found within the Qur'an, they cite their faith for their repressive government. Meanwhiel they praise Ayatollah Bush and praise the conservative appointments of conservative Supreme Court Justices without realizing that their freedoms are slowly being eroded. Conservatives who supported the Bush policies "war on terror" were supporting a strategy that exacerbated the already prevalent anti-American sentiment in the Middle East. Both conservatives and democrats should stop displacing an ignorant hatred onto the whole Muslim population for the actions of few. Should the Republicans regain their true identity, I am confident that true bipartisanship will emerge.
This country is in dire need of both influences. The influence of the Democratic party regarding the social rights of citizens is the most important characteristic of American government. Take away the freedoms of an American citizen and the United States will be a hollow country enslaved by the very laws drafted to protect said freedoms. The influence of the Republican party regarding the fiscal conservatism is also important to the development of our country. The Republican party is also needed to curb spending of the Democratic party. A fiscally conservative country will focus on its domestic issues with precision and efficiency.
Stop criticizing the President and start focusing on ways to improve your government. For example, vote for your Congressman. They pass the laws.

The economy of the 90's were based on smoke and mirrors that was created by the Tech stocks that created false economic growth throughout the US with much of the profits going in to the market rather than paying off debts and going in to saving accounts. This was during the Clinton years by the way.
Then the "tech bubble" burst and all the money was gone in a couple of days and so were the jobs - which took longer. We are now feeling the final stages of our greed during the Clinton days of greed and free spending by the man on the street.
Republicans were foolish enough to catch the same disease as everyone else and believe the times were going to last. They tried to be friends with the dems and make nice since times were good. Now they are blamed for everything.
Where is the blame for the dems that have been running Congress for all but a few years over the last 50 years? Why not be proud of what your party has done? I have said it before and will say it again, I do NOT want to be sitting on my arse everyday in front of this computer looking for a job. I WANT to be working. I got laid off in September, well before the election. I am out looking for work more hours than I worked each week it seems. But being a "professional" in this Walmart world.... Two more of my professional friends have gotten laid off. There was a new "Sams" opening up, we all rushed to try to get hired, at Walmart wages because WE WANT TO WORK. Did any of us get hired? One person got an interview and no hire. Who got the jobs? No offense to anyone, but the same people you see at your local Walmart. Those places are NOT hiring professional people who went to work every day on time and worked thru their lunch hours and stayed til 6 or 7. They keep the people who could really care about working. Oh, i have a headache, I can't go in today. Oh my kids sick. (yes, I had to work many hours extra because of co-workers going home or not coming in because their kid was sick or bullied someone at school. And I have been watching as aquaintences with jobs, party too much and call in sick because of a hangover. I look at them and shake my head. Especially when they look at me and say "you could find a job if you want one". I hope you keep your job. I honestly do. I hope you never have to worry about running out of gas coming home from a job interview or handing in your resume/application.
And btw, Unemployment is different than Welfare. I have worked since I was 16. I am 47, almost 48. I have paid in unemployment "insurance" for how many years, NEVER collected until now. Some, no a lot of us out here are hard working people with a STRONG work ethic. And in all honesty to blame this all on one administration is stupid. It is all of them. Every president (career politician) has been the same, progressively getting worse as each term goes on as he gets paid off.
And I might add, the true unemployment number is over 18% and getting worse.

It's the deregulation that spawned all these subprime mortgages bundled and sold bonds that caused the problem. With no risk to the original mortgage companies they made their money and ran. You've repeated this a few times, Kevin, so I guess you believe it. You also claimed that Clinton and Carter were the proponents of selling houses to anyone, but you don't acknowledge Bush's "Ownership Society" initiatives.
And, by the way, the banks didn't pay any attention to Carter and Clinton's proposals to a great extent anyway...think of how hard it was to get a loan in the 80s or 90s compared to this decade. Why? It was not until this decade that banks and brokerage firms were allowed to be part of the same company. Let me explain...
Fannie and Freddie were not the sole cause of the economic crisis. They played a part...but not nearly as large a part as Gramm Leach Bliley (1999).
Republicans (Congress) and Democrats (Clinton) are responsible for this Bill, which to me is the primary culprit of what we experienced in this decade. Yes, they were all listening to Alan Greenspan...who now admitted he was wrong in thinking that the banks would self-regulate.
So what happened with GLB? Banks were allowed to become Brokerage firms, and Brokerage firms were allowed to become banks. Yes, they were also allowed to become insurance companies - which also played a part - but we'll keep it simple...
The banking wing of a company approves a loan and then lobs the liability over to its brokerage wing. The brokerage wing then bundles the liabilities into collateralized debt obligation products and sells them to investors.
It was a (short-term) no-lose situation for the banks/brokerage firms. The risk associated to a consumer's ability to repay a mortgage was placed squarely into the hands of an investor, who in the up market was more than willing to take on that liability...but when the market hit the brakes, the investors stopped investing, and the banks/brokerage firms were left holding trillions in debt...the gravy train dried up, but before they could get thrown in jail, the CEOs who put these debt instruments in place left with hundreds of millions of dollars (EACH!).
Yes, Fannie and Freddie played a part because they were involved from a loan-buying standpoint, but CitiBank (Smith Barney), Merrill Lynch, Lehman, Bear Stearns, et al. were the real culprits...oh, and AIG insured the products, so they were greedy idiots as well.
I could go into a lot more detail, but you see the point. It was the greed of a few that led to this downfall, but to blame it solely upon Fannie and Freddie is a talking point, not a fact.
I voted for Obama. I liked what he promised us. I liked what he stood for.

The banks we allowed to do what they did by the SEC and the FED. The government oversight was nonexistant and when warned simply continued with a failing policy. Now the government wants to allow the FED, a private unregulated entity, to run the whole show and completely remove congressional oversight. The rich will now have total economic control without any recourse.
What he is asking for is not that they "slim down" and "provide details of solvency" Obama wants the "keys to the car" so he could hop in anytime and drive without a licence.
While I agree that the convoluted business the bamnks have engaged in should be halted and the FED should come back under the control of congress and the law, I disagree as to allowing the FED to have any control at all until it is subject to complete transparency and congressional intervention. Even then there is the still uninvestigated matter of who in congress failed to intervene when the alarms were sounded well in advance that fannie and freddie were on thin ice and cracks could be seen. What good will it do to have more control/ power when what exists already is unsound.
How can we move forward to change when the history we should base it on is shrouded in mystery and apparently going to stay that way.

Ever since 1913, when the European banking oligarcs successfully couped this country, we have slowly been destroyed. These banking families (Rockafellers/Rothchilds) have been trying to take over and destroy this country since we broke away from them after the Revolutionary war in 1776. Now these families have created this crisis so that they can make a new Bank of the World to control the fiat, counterfeit, fraudulent money supply of the entire world. Not to mention the fact that the Rockafellers and Rothchilds created the U.N. after WW2, they created the World Bank, they ceated the IMF, they created the WHO, and when the American economy completely collapses and is no longer the Reserve Currency, they will have thier One World Fascist Government and then carry out thier publicly stated agenda of de-population. #16 - Sun Jul 5, 2009 4:28 PM EDTWisest thing I've read today. Every politician, both parties, is just a puppet. The Federal Reserve must GO. We need an Andrew Jackson today to break the back of these allied monster banks. They have the governments of every industrialized nation in a death grip.
Read my post #13.2 and note the bold portion. The FED is NOT a private entity. It is a "quasi-public/quasi-private" bank, owned by the government with some private investment (banks who have a stake in the central bank. Read the history of the Central Bank from pre-Constitution days.
Read the history Micha'el. We NEVER broke away from the money families, even with the revolution. Those families were still controlling the banking system after 1776 and still do today.
Both banks were, again, based upon the Bank of England, but the increased Federal power, due to the constitution, gave them more control over currency.
The "R's" are still strong in banking and are part of the "Illuminati", just as GHWB is. They are the true controllers of the US and World economies.
BTW, LyndaAZ, the reason Jackson threw out the 2nd National Bank was due to corruption within the bank.
This is great news and may we never need another bailout.

With the arrival of Reaganomics America was on track to economic distruction. In a global market of players with diverse impoverished cultures void of worker and human rights, pure capitalism was destined to fail. While socialism tends to breed complacency and stagnation. Capitalism breeds greed. Capitalism is based on a positive return on investment which inturn creates ever increasing prices and wages, which in turn eventually prices itself out of the global market. Only a rational mix of Capitalism and Socialism can survive in the current world market.

Even while the corporate aristocracy is eliminating their jobs, terminating their health care, and making sure they will be poor all their lives, they are lapping it up! Yay! This is Capitalism! Too bad they don't seem to realize they will never participate in it! This Gilded Age II is no different from the original one: Corporate robber barons keeping millions of employees in sweat shops at minimum wage while they light their cigars with hundred dollar bills. And yet any alternative is demonized as communism!
Yes, LyndaAZ, that has always been the issue. The Robber Barons have always controlled the market place since the founding of this nation. We really need to go back to the age of bartering where we barter with our neighbors to provide for each other. Work for ourselves and each other rather than working for big companies. And people thought Ford had such great ideas with his "industrialization." Assembly line factories were just another way to make slaves of the "common man."
The reason we have so many TBTF companies today is the reason for my nickname.....we lost the ability to enforce the anti-trust laws passed by Congress so many years ago.

If they're too big they're big enough to direct public policy, which they do by blackmailing the government into giving them emergency bailouts and exercising influence and power by spending their endless profits on lobbyists and perks for lawmakers. Corporate America is running the country. I don't know about you but I elected a government to do that. You may not like the government or the president but they, and not AIG, Citibank, Exxon or General Motors, were elected to run the country. This is not what capitalism is supposed to be. These companies need to be split up into smaller entities, the same way AT&T was split into Baby Bells. I just hope Obama's policy goes far enough.
#21 - Sun Jul 5, 2009 4:43 PM EDTI would like to focus away from the President right now and get down to cold,hard consumer facts. Let me give you an example. I have my two checking accounts with Bank of America plus a small savings account which, for no intent and purpose was making no interest. But I was able to pay my bills on line and since I live in a small town I always received exceptional service from my local branch.
Now, within the last month the follow has occurred. Bank of American now carries my first and second mortgages which came from Countrywide that from which they receive $2300.00 dollars in interest each month. They are also requiring that I keep a minimum balance of $1500 dollars in each checking account each month or I will have to pay a fee. As I have two accounts, that is a total of $3000.00 of free money that they get to use and they are not paying me any interest.
And number three, which I am in a hot debate with them currently is this: I have a credit card that I have had for at least 10 years. It has been bought out multiple times by lending institutions but the rate has always stayed the same 4.9%. Through my life I have guarded this credit card with my life to make sure that I did not do anything that would cause my rate to be increased.
About a month ago I received a letter from Bank of America that they would now be in control of my finances in total. And I was told at the time that BOA had no plans to increase my interest rate.
About two weeks ago, I received a letter stating that my interest level was going up to 11% (it actually may have been a bit more). I almost had a STROKE. I was so mad. I tried every way I could to get hold of customer service by phone without success. So finally I wrote them a log letter to explain what they would be losing if they changed my credit card rate.
1. The $2300 worth of interest they get monthly on my home loans.
2. The free use of my $3000 each month
3. My checking and savings business with their institution.
I have explained that I fully expect that they will not raise my credit card rate or I WILL pull all my business away. I am currently awaiting a reply. They have given me a case number and the issue is currently being "investigated".
Now someone PLEASE tell me that banks do not need regulation. They are engaging is this type of practice to screw all their customers before new banking rules go into effect. In addition BOA is like the blob, taking over everything it sees. They no longer appear to have ANY concern for their long term customers.
I know that my interest rate of 4.9% is very rare and I am lucky to have it. It is the only credit card that I have and they do make interest off me as I usually carry some balance each month.
But I ask you, why are they trying to screw their day to day customers who make up a large portion of the base of their business? Most people will just roll over and play dead and just eat what ever new rules and interest rates they put in front of us. Well it won't be me. I am taking them to task and if the raise my rate, I am outta there.

Credit Unions are a scam.
So is BOA AND Countrywide,, (one and the same actually).
It used to be,, for example,, if you worked for the government,, or any stable company
that was affiliated with a "credit union" they would float you a loan almost with
no question.
NOW,, (and it has been this way for years), Credit Unions are just as bad if not worse
than ANY bank.
That's where the money is--the day-to-day customers. Even if they only screw everyone out of about $50 on average, they have millions of customers. What's another $15 here or there? Probably 100 employee salaries and benefits to them.
I fail to see how they can justify requiring you to have certain accounts open, let alone with such high minimum balances. Your mortgages are separate contracts from your regular banking. If they bought your mortgage from Countrywide, I don't know what you could do about that, but you should tell them to take a hike on your banking and credit cards if they aren't rewarding you for all that business. If you rarely carry a balance, then the difference between your 4.9% interest and what you'll get on another CC isn't much, and may be well worth the satisfaction of knowing BOA isn't feeding off all of your assets.
In my experience, credit unions are far better than banks, but I'd be happy to hear specifics from anyone with a different opinion.
Though I will qualify that by saying my last credit union charged some fees that were just as ludicrous as banks. An automatic transfer from savings to checking incurred a $15 fee. At my current credit union, I asked them about this type of policy and said, "Why on earth would we charge you to do that?" Shop around for the best financial institution for your needs.
I'd say it is time to change banks. Choose a small independent bank with no ties to BOA.
In November, BofA raised my interest rate from 9.9% to 29% because they WANTED to! Seriously. I called, got my interest back to 9.9% on balance owed, and cancelled the card.
I heard a caller on CSPAN the same week complaining about the same thing. He said when he called they told him it was a computer glitch, and reversed his interest rate.
I had another account with another company with balance under $2000, and 6.9%. They were going to raise it to 11% because it was not profitable to carry my account at 6.9%. I closed this one also at 6.9%. They raised it to 11% although I had met their terms of closing the account in writing. So there was another phone call to get this resolved.

Let's face it folks, many reasons banks are in the mess they are in is goverment intervention and goverment programs - I spent 23 years in the banking industry, lending to be exact. They WERE expected to lend to risky borrowers so that everyone experienced the american dream...what a nightmare we have now!

I wasn't involved in the approval, but it sure seemed we gathered enough information to make an intelligent decision on whether the loan should have been approved.
Who, (name, rank & title please) demanded that risky loans were approved? "They" is so ambiguous. It seems "They" are responsible for so many things. Too bad poor old Bernie couldn't blame "They".
When does individual reponsibility ever come into play in this country? If we are directed to do something "wrong" at our jobs do we just roll over and play dead for a paycheck? I've asked a manager to "put it in writing, sign and date it" in some situations. Did it make him happy? No. Did he put it in writing? No. Did I do it? No.
Khrushchev once said the U.S. would fail from within, no need for conquering countries to invade, simply pick up the pieces. Financially, the U.S is on the brink of financial meltdown.
A country, that allows foreign nations to hold the majority of it's financial debt, is just asking for trouble.
Why are we not worried about this? Politicians keep us focused on social security, the war in Iraq and Afganistan. The recent financial collapse occupies the news channels, shouting from the roof tops about Armageddon and the death of a celebrity while Russia and China simply wait for the opportunity.
