Does anyone find it ironic that the government is going to fine companies that hire illegal immigrants, but then turn around and tell us that we must clothe, feed, house and provide medical care and education to them because they are not employed and poor?
This sounds good as far as it goes, but it doesn't go far enough! It won't work unless they are also willing to send in the "troops" to arrest and deport the illegal aliens once they are identified. Also, we need to seal our borders as tightly as possible to keep additional illegal alien leeches from fastening on to our country. We need to watch Obama and the Democrats carefully to be sure that they don't sell us out to the "La Raza" crowd as thanks for voting for them.
Lets get E-Verify enacted and you wouldn't have to worry about this. E-Verify would catch them before they're employed and all that information could be used to find these people and send them back where they belong, anchor babies and all. If you're here illegaly that child that was born here is illegal too, so everyone goes back home where they belong. Let's start enforcing the law's we have and kick the illegal immigrants out of the country and let Mexico or whatever country their from, put them to work. People are sick and tired of illegal immigrants using gov't services paid for with our tax dollars and if you legalize 12 to 20 million undocumented workers they will be eligible for Social Security in 10 years (or 40 quarters) and reap the benefits we American's have been working our whole life for. Round 'em up and kick 'em out.

This is like the President going to the general public to obtain support for his Stimulus Bill, a trip which he did not need to take, instead of staying in DC to work with the House and Senate representatives. Now, his administration side kicks have sent out letters informing businesses they had better have their act together before the law closes in. Oh, great. Prior notification. What a dumb move. And he is using this as a means to ESTABLISH CREDITABILITY before a RETROACTIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM BILL is submitted to the House and Senate.
This tells me the President is still looking for brownie points to support his pet legislation even though he does not need to make any SPECIAL TRIPS TO GAIN PUBLIC SUPPORT since the Democrats have a majority in the House and Senate. The Republications cannot filibuster any legislation. Is the President worried that some Democrats will cross the fence? No bipartism left. Time to crack the whip on Mrs. Speaker.
Illegal immigrants are just that: ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. NO AMNESTY. NO ACCEPTANCE OF A PAYMENT TO BECOME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. Write the Immigration Reform Bill to state that at least one of the parents must be a citizen of the U.S. in order for a child to become an American citizen, and make that RETROACTIVE FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS.
I am an Independent and cannot wait for the next election cycle.

I am surprised to see Obama is the one to initiate this policy! I had a business for 25 years and I told anyone who would listen that the way to deal with the illegal alien problem is to go after the employers, not the employees. If you make it expensive for the employer to keep an illegal worker, he will stop hiring them, and, eventually the jobs for them will dry up. They will self deport if there is no work. Bush had it all wrong and made no effort to control the problem. This is stunning to me.
The fact is, this is just like the drug wars "attack the providers and not the users". Want to win you attack both sides and make life difficult for them to operate.

Speaking of Common Sense, the I-9 (Eligibility and Verification Form) has been a requirement by the US Federal government for many, many years to avoid undocumented workers (aka "illegal" immigrants) from securing employment in the US "illegally." My question is, what took Congress so long to FINALLY decide to enforce our existing federal laws??? Enforce our laws, Congress, you ninkumpoops!
AUDIT ALL Manufacturing, Construction and Farming industries, and THEN maybe our government can start gaining a "little" credibility for enforcing EXISTING immigration laws.

Hometowngirl, it's going to get interesting. Non-compliance of the I-9 carries a heavy fine. I also "heard" that charges were made against the Human Resources people who were hiring for the meat packing plant that was shut down.
Every HR professional knows that an I9 audit can be conducted at ANY time by the federal government. I hope the HR professionals are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They knew "for a fact" they were not hiring legally "documented" workers.
This article states that it's very hard to determine if a person is a legally documented worker without violating "anti-discrimination" laws. What a BUNCH OF HOOEY! Either they have the Work Visa, or they don't. It's really that simple.

Hey, President Obama ----- If you want your program to get off to a fast start with some real success, begin with the home builders in Phoenix, Arizona. I worked in that area not long ago and I can assure you that 9 out of 10 workers I came in contact with AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITES, spoke little, if any, English. When obviously non construction type vehicles came around, the workers disappeared like cigarette smoke in the wind. I personally saw this happen hundreds of times. Drop on in sometime and see for yourself. P.S. Bring one of the Home Builder OWNERS along with you so he may witness first hand what is going on.
If they really wanted to find the illegals, they could start by placing a monitor at every food bank, hospital ER, township welfare office, and every other giveaway location. THAT's where they congregate.

That is not a true statement. it was a nice try though. Businesses do not hire illegal aliens because Americans will not do the jobs. They hire illegal aliens because they can get away with paying them less than an American, giving them fewer benefits, and because they know they won't have to follow fair labor laws since the illegals will not file complaints with the government. For these businesses, it is all about the bottom line and their profit statements.
BZB, You are partially correct. Many contractors faced with competition that hire illegals realize if they want to stay in business they will do the same. Some are bad apples, but not all. I had a business for 25 years in manufacturing and when you're competing for jobs and contracts they don't care who you are hiring, just whether your price is the best one. I had 72 sewers running in the 80's with probably 25% with suspect ID's. And I'm sure there were Americans willing to do the work as well, but at a union wage that would have destroyed any chance of getting sewing contracts. I was afraid of the Reagan promise to enforce the immigration laws with stiff fines until I found out that the incoming administrations weren't going to enforce it. What you find is that even the people making orders with the contract manufacturers are forced by their competitors to seek out manufacturers that will get them a price at which they can also compete. If you are looking for a culprit look no further than in the closest mirror. We, the consumer, control the manufacturing process with our descretionary dollars. The day we are willing to pay for domestic goods made by Americans is the day this picture changes. Going after employers, if it is done in an evenhanded way is a good and effective first step.

I recently served on the Board for my Homeowner's Association. One of the first things I noticed was that we did not have any I-9's on file for the workers of our lawn care service. All of the workers were hispanic and either did not or would not admit to speaking or understanding English. The owner was also mexican but did speak limited English. I requested that he provide us with documentation that the people working on our property had legal status. He refused and became quite outraged. He used language that a sailor would be proud of and told me in no uncertain terms that it was none of my @)(#(*&'ING business (that word he knew quite well). When we attempted to discharge the service for not providing the proper documentation, he brought in some government agency that threatened to sue us for discrimination - even though the service was substandard and the owner's behaviour was unacceptable. To make a long story short, to avoid costly litigation fees, we kept the service til the contract expired.
So how will a "crackdown on businesses" help the problem when the government assists suspected illegals by paying their attorney fees to file discrimination???

Maybe that's the way to get the illegal aliens to leave: ICE should follow the example of the IRS and offer a cash reward for turning in illegal aliens. It wouldn't have to be a huge amount: maybe $250-500 a head. I'll bet that the phones would be ringing off the desks at ICE, with the down economy. And the icing on the cake: deporting illegals would open up a lot of jobs for Americans. If the employers can't get their cheap illegal labor, they'll have to pay American wages again., and Americans will apply for the better-paying jobs!
If you was living in Arizona , you could of call Joe and he would of went after them. Yes you still should turn him into Irs, but you could of stop paying him and he would of left. You had the right to ask for proof and I do not know which group he brought in they could of never sue you or the other homeowner, they just want to see if they could back you down and it work.
When I go out for bids all of my bid requirer that anyone working on any of our property must have proof they are legal to be in this country plus I also require that everyone speak English. This has cause some companies problem that they was unable to bid any of my work.

I guess it's my turn now to be humble. I am a black woman and I voted for President Obama. Partly because he was black and if he succeeded in changing all the BS in government, How great that would be for our people. But it looks like he is no better than the rest of them. He has forgotten much. I have tried to be patient and wait until he shows me something, but it doesn't look like he will. I realize that he took on a great burden left by Bush but he had to know that when the s--- hit the fan he would be standing out there alone. He had to know that to succeed he would have to jump in and start fighting for americans. Instead it seems to me he thinks illegals and rich people are the only ones to consider. I am so disappointed. May God help our country because we are going down.

I emailed Sen McCasgill 2 days ago about the situation of illegals' "American" babies becoming a major factor in deciding elections in the United States in the next decade or two and inquired about her thoughts and plans to enact meaningful legislation to deal with this fact, and why do we have opt 1 for English and 2 for Spanish in the first place?
I have yet to hear a reply, and I voted for her.
Also, I believe we need a state and federal web site to report in real time known and suspected illegals and where they are employed.
I have to show a valid birth certificate to renew my driver's license in MO, and proof of auto insurance to tag a vehicle, yet I have several acquaintance's who have been involved in wrecks with "illegals" who have valid car tags in this state - no DL or insurance.
Curious to know what happened to the illegals involved in accidents with no license or insurance? Were they jailed, fined, deported? You and I both know that we would be in deep doodoo if we drove without a license or insurance. (And I am sick of the phrase "undocumented alien". If I lose my license but drive anyway, am I an "undocumented driver"? Not on your life.)
Supposed to be have been deported, but according to some that lived openly here before construction slowed and the chicken plant raided, they would be back within a week.
The way I see it is we have the immigration issues because we have a welfare state. If we actually expected people to work instead of waiting at the mail box for the first of the month there wouldn't be any jobsfor the illegals to take. I work in the construction business, believe me, there would have been no building boom in the last 10 years without hispanic labor. The good-ole boys have been bitchin for years about making nothing although they barely show up for work. They do sorry work and want to be paid 20 bucks an hour. They stay drunk all the time and I could write a book on all the excuses they give for not showing up for work. I don't know what the answer is, but until we make americans work these jobs there will be no economic recovery.

I have worked construction also, usually for the GC. I have seen the same things and the solutions is easy. It is a SAFETY Issue, first time - written warning to the employee and sub-contractor. Second time they are fired and escorted off the job site..... If the sub-contractor receives numerous warnings and fails to rectify the problem... The GC does not let them bid on the next project......
If you are working and notice a SAFETY problem it is YOUR responsibility to notify your crew leader. If you are not willing to accept this responsibility, you are then placing yourself and others in danger. Maybe YOU need to find another occupation........
Help remove the non-performers and SAFETY problems, use the safety program. Then maybe we ALL will see a increase in PAY and have a safer work place...... Higher wages will result in more job applications and the good workers will stay in the occupation longer....
This is a much more cost effective way of dealing with the problem than going after individual immigrants.
Although employers often hide behind "independent" contractors who hire the illegals, it is clear they know what is happening and are behind it.
For every rogue employer you punish, you deal with the source of hundreds of illegal jobs.

What about the illegals with forged or stolen papers? Is it to be the employer's responsibility in those cases? This is a good start but there will have to be some type of protection for the employers who truly don't realize they are employing illegals. Plus there will have to be some requirement that the illegal themselves receive punishment, deportment, or both.
We should also crack down on organizations that assist illegals with everything from housing to legal assistance to transportation.

After the employer fills out the I-9 it is checked by the government for valid social security numbers and the correct name. If any information is incorrect the employer is notified and asked to re-check the information on the picture ID & SS Card. If the employee's information is found to be fake they are fired, and the government is notified. If the employer does not do this, they are then eligible to be fined and jailed themselves........
Presently most companies are using temp agencies and sub-contractors to remove this burden of proof and legal liabilities. The extra 20 to 30% they are paying for this service has caused the amount paid to most of the employees to drop, along with the benefits for length of service, and unemployment...........
AC -- Thanks for the grim update. I am retired so haven't encountered this problem; however, I have watched my son try to find a job and wind up with a temp agency that paid him starvation wages yet charged the employer hefty fees. One agency even took 30% of his pre-tax pay for "referral fees." I thought the increase in the number of temp jobs was just a result of the poor economy but now can clearly see the connection to illegals. So sad.
AC Robertson, no the I9 is NOT checked by the government. Where on Earth do you get your information?
The I9 is completed by you with the HR Department (who is supposed to verify your documentation that makes you ELIGIBLE to work in the US, i.e. passport, birth certificate, driver's license, social security card, worker visa, green card, etc.) at the company in which you are hired, and it is simply - FILED. The only time an I9 is looked at by the federal government is IF they decide to do an audit.
Our government has FAILED the American people by not enforcing our OWN federal laws. Case and point, the federal government has NOT audited enough companies in the manufacturing, construction and farming industries. Start there, and close down the companies hiring illegal workers -- period -- case closed. Illegal people leave US, and we don't have to deport them.
It's that simple.

ICE is committed to rounding up all illegals and expiditing their deportation. ICE wants it to be clear that if you come into the United States we will hunt you down and we will capture you. There is no escape and after we are done with you you will not want to come back to the United States again."

If it were drugs they would go after the dealers and their suppliers as the big fish and deal with the users as the little fish...................so go after the employers and those who do the forgeries and after the illegal immigrants themselves as the little fish. Take away the reason for the illigal immigration. Legal immigrants will continue to immigrate and get gainful employment............as it should be. The only way illegal workers are ever going back accross the border is on their own. By that I mean the eplyment atmosphere here must be such that employers risk loosing their business when caught hiring illegals. If you were living in this country tax free, getting free medical care and schooling for your children, would you give all that up to become a citizen? I don't think so. Of course the realtor also spoke spanish, but instead of hiring spanish people that were citizens if her intentions were to help her own race, she hired two guys off the street corner hanging out at a home depot... day labor.. illegal day labor. We need to turn these people in that hire illegals that live in our neighborhoods... if we see someone picking up an illegal, write down the tag number and call INS. We need to all work together here. I get it , wages have fallen for the past 20 years so we buy at walmart and hire illegals because it is the best we can afford, but maybe we need to just stop and let that yard grow up into weeds. That way we might actually get our schools, healthcare, and wages back on track so the next generation can afford to live without hiring illegals. American is about making it better for the next generation and you are not helping if your part of the problem.

I have reported several known and suspected illegals here in Florida and INS doens't even investigate unless they sell drugs to kids, rape, pillage, or commit some other violent offense against society.
I blame Obama because he want to give them Amnesty and allow them to stay in this country, he is no saint or even caring what the American people want period. He promise the Latino group when he was running for office and said it in Spanish that they would get amnesty.
I would like to mention one more thing. I worked in HR in CA a few years back. The I-9 was simple. You had to have the actual SS card or a new application. Then you called to verify it. When you hold an SS card part of the card is raised as you run your finger over it. I saw a ton of cards, and the forgeries are easy to spot. The are not raised, or the print is a bit off in the seal. Most forged cards are a dead give away, so employers should take the blame when the card was easy to figure out as that is no excuse at all. Plus, I had a girl apply with her ss card and photo ID. In CA you have to call the SS department to verify the info. The ss card did belong to someone by that name but the would be 80 years old this girl was maybe 20. Employers can not wiggle out so easy when there are ways to tell in most cases. I am sure there are a few good cases in their favor, but mostly it is all about greed. SS cards are not so easy to duplicate, and you have to call SS, so you get all the details from the government. These employers are simply not doing the raised test, and they are not calling the SS... they want cheap labor and the proof of that is using a sub-contractor to shrik their duties in hiring and taking finanacial responsibility. If you hire someone who does not have command of the english language chances are they did not take the test so you need to be much more cautious when reviewing their paperwork. Hiring an illegal needs to include jail time I think as it lets the taxpayers pick up the tab for a society that is fast losing their jobs, and in return the employer pays cheaper wages which again hurts our tax base, and hurts sales. Illegals send their money to their home land, they spend little here. They have children here and get food stamps or adc for those children. If you live 3=4 familes to a home you can pool those government resources in aid to these children and it is a big help. I lived in Norcross GA which is over run with illegals. They had beds stacked in their garages and all over the houses. They would park several cars in the yards. IF you reported them, the county could do little about the "too many" living in a house as they do not have "mailing" addresses, just tons of cars in the yard. They were bold and rude and ran the neighborhoods down. In AZ they were not as they were not illegals, they had lived here for generations and they were just like all Americans. Illegals are the poorest of their third world country and when they come here they are not coming from 3-2 homes usually it is a shack without plumbing. They need to fix their own country no invade us... Mexico has money, she just gives it all to the wealthy instead of creating jobs. WE send companies down there to give her jobs and in return she sends cheap labor to run across our borders and take our jobs only to send their money home to Mexico. She is not a good neighbor, she is a corrput nation and the people there need to revolt to fix that. We can not fix other nations, the people themselves must fight for their rights. Sorry to rant, but I was so angry when I found out we have people that ran from Iraq here while our kids are fighting their wars as if they are too good to fight their own stupid battles.
Are employers of people with green cards required to withhold any taxes on them? If not, they should be required to pay social security like they would have to for an American worker. Why should employers get a pass on this expense by hiring any temporary worker? The money could go into the general fund just as it would if it were an American being employed.
Also, the employer and employee should have to pay for health insurance just as if it was an American worker. No more American taxpayers picking up the true cost of having people from other countries working here.
No more food stamps or aid because of substandard wages being paid. Again, the employer should have to pay a true living wage.
If any type of legislation is passed in this country, I believe it should include these provisions.

Let's also have any employer knowingly using illegal labor to reimburse the govt for any unpaid hospital bills, govt handouts, schooling, etc., incurred by the illegal. And that should a portion of the cost for printing "free" (i.e. paid for by you and me) spanish driver's manuals, court/hospital/welfare/school translators, . . . . . . . Last, but certainly not least, the employer should provide a one-way bus ticket back to mexico for the illegal and his entire leech-along family including any anchors.

How about if you work in HR and are directed to hire illegals anyway or lose YOUR job. I believe that if you are in this position that you should be paid a minimum "whistleblower bounty" of maybe $25,000 or more to turn in your employer (since you will probably be unemployed as a result). And no wriggling out by the business owner claiming he was unaware of the illegals. He should know who is working for his company, and hire trustworthy people to be in charge of his departments. There are honest, loyal people in this country who would be happy to comply with immigration guidelines in this country. I had to provide SS card and valid driver's license to work at a major retailer in this country in the 90's and I am white and southern with the accent and all. I said can't you tell I'm local? Manager said it didn't matter, valid documentation was required. This was at the home office, but I understand they have not been near as picky at their stores!
I am not an Obama supporter but I applaud the administration for at least doing something. Much more needs to be done regarding illegals but this is a start. Let's hope more measures are put in place going forward.
Illegal immigrants are not going to leave because of lack of work. California presently has a very
big lack of work and our streets are as crowded as a big city. They are not here for the marvelous
job opportunities. That is all smoke and mirrors. I remember when the used to claim that they were here for the farm work that white people wouldnt do for twenty dollars an hour.
When there is no work, they get food stamps, health care, welfare, home-loans, education,
etc. They feel that they are the rightful owners of most of thios country. They will leave when
we make them leave. And on their way out they will cry about not having any constitutional
rights or being treated with disrespect or racism, or the "children", or whatever they can think
of.
Asking that we be allowed to live in peace, without guilt, in our own country is something that
we will have to fight for.
Calif. started the problem with the illegal for they was the first to say we was going against their rights, that is why your state have big money issue. Tex, AZ and NV has the same problems with supporting them.
I do not care if they think we have no respect for them or if they think I am a racist, for they have no respect for us or this country period. You do not reward people for entering your country illegally, so deport them and their children when their children become 21 they can apply for citizenship . I for one believe if both your parents was illegal and you was born here than you are illegal also.
We have allow the people to stay in our country and now it time to put them out no matter what, we are the one supporting our government with our money so it time they listen to what we want. This next election everyone needs to be put out of office so we can start over and control our own country.
