Reversing a decade-long trend, many of America's largest cities are now growing more quickly than the rest of the nation, yet another sign of an economic crisis that is making it harder for people to move.

Where did the Census data come from? ACORN?
What a joke YOUR goverment is.
The reason our top two cities are in the east is because the Raleigh politicians continue to ignore Charlotte's needs (gotta take care of the hog farmers who provide the swing vote). We need to secede and along with Rock Hill and Greeneville-Spartanburg, S.C.(also ignored by the Columbia-Charleston concerns of their Columbia based government) create our own state. It's pathetic when an outerbelt project green-lighted in 1977 is still not finished and the first portion that has needed to be widened for 20 years (since it was opened) doesn't even have a timetable for widening it.But let some Washington flim-flam man propose trains to uptown and they're on it (too bad they don't go to the airport which would make sense).
"Where did the Census data come from? ACORN? "
huh?
For you right wing zombies, the answer to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING these days is Acorn and kool aid? What an easy way to avoid any intellectual thinking on your part, apparently any thinking at all.
Come back if you ever DO have an actual thought in your head.
ACORN has to pad those census numbers for urban areas to prevent 105% voter turnout next year.
Oh, by the way Bartman....at least we have two answers to everything...you only had one..."it's Bush's fault"....
By the way, how's that approval rating looking this week?
And, of course, Bartman, those of us who visit this site regularly recognize you as a true paragon of "intellectual thinking"!
Obama moved control of the census from the Department of the Interior to the White House. He changed the method of actual enumeration as required by the Constitution, to a "sampling" method. He placed the operation of the census in the hands of a thug organization, ACORN, which he personally trained and organized. This organization is being investigated for fraud and misuse of funds. An inspector general who found evidence of this misuse of funds, was fired by Obama. The people who run ACORN iare Obama's friends. Obama wants control of electoral votes for the coming elections, to insure his re-election. In fact, he plans to be president for life. King Obama
Rev G. take a pill and educate yourself.
ACORN has just announced where they will add fictious people to the census so they can vote in 2012! If I were the voter registration department I'd ask for a copy of their census and compare it to the current list of voters. One person not there that they said exists and I'd sue the socks off of them!
ACORN has been acquired by the free masons who have welcomed Obama as an NWO member now and begin total brainwashing of his constituents to keep his majority until 2016 then elect a manchurian candidate after the government has implanted every citizen with GPS tracking and mind control devices after Obama has created his "welfare care" and forces every citizen to see ACORN ordained doctors from his liberal college affiliates. It has been told to me by god that Jesus will come from the heavens riding a triceratops and trample the WHITE house and every god-hating liberal, waving the american flag, then go around the world crushing governments that are oppressive. Then everyone eats freedom fries and american 100% beef non-kosher hamburgers and watches fox news.
Hm. This seems rather like an anti-urban article, if you ask me. Cities that grow are BAD? This is a golden opportunity to improve urban areas, to me...
I used to live in the suburbs. Now I live downtown, and I love being able to walk to work, the gym, etc. I save a lot of money (in drive time as well as gas)!
It's true that I haven't given up the "owning the car" habit, but in a couple of years the city I live in will have completed mass transit to the point where paying to park a car, paying for insurance, maintenance, etc., will no longer make sense.
Lots of people in New York and big cities around the world like London and Paris never have a car! Just think of how much it cost to maintain a car, I'd say at least $200 a month or so and that doesn't even count a payment on the car!
greg let's see how much you love it after your first mugging or after being grazed by a bullet fired from a car driven by a bunch of rabid animals. I always thought it would be cool to live in a city until I realized how dangerous the liberals allowed the streets to become.
Democratnomore, do you think there aren't whackos and nutjobs in the suburbs? How about those meth labs in the middle of nowhere run by some retarded redneck hillbilly? I hope you have fun picking up your belongings after they've been plastard all over the fields because your meth-head neighbor who can't spell his/her own name blew up the 2-bedroom trailer in which they were manufacturing drugs. Get real, there are plenty of whackjobs out there no matter where you live. I believe I recently read something about a small town in Indiana where a high school coach was shot and killed. That wasn't a big city. Please don't act like there aren't problems all over the US, not just in big cities. Your reasoning makes you look a bit like a coward. I'd hate to see a world full of people who were afraid of "what if".
BTW, I was born and raised in Northwestern/Central PA where there is nothing but farmland and small towns. Sounds like a perfect fit for you. I moved to Seattle after the military and have lived here since 2003. I have not looked back since. Living here has opened my eyes helped me remove the "blinders" I once wore. There's a whole different, more cultured, more educated world out there for you to see, maybe you should experience it sometime. You might just be amazed at what you find. Maybe one day I'd like to live farther away from downtown, but I don't see that happening soon, and most likely not for the same reasons as you.
I've never been shot, mugged, or even witnessed "a car being driven by a bunch of rabid animals" in the 6 years I've lived here. Although, my dogs sometimes like to sit in the driver's seat when they're waiting for me, does that count? I know they don't have rabies, but it's close, right? :~)
Go Philly! Can't beat the property taxes here. Wage tax is a bummer though. Pound for pound a better eating city than either DC or New York, and I am not talking cheese steak.
In a perfect world, it would be great not to have to own a car, growing up in Hawaii, where they have an excellent bus system, you really do not need to own one. However, here in Missouri, the public transit system is a complete nightmare, and it only provides service in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, they apparently have a bus or two that go to the surrounding cities, however, they take you no where. They do not run on Sundays at all, and you have to walk a couple of miles to get to the bus stop. It just makes no sense. I would love to be able to give up my car, car insurance, maintenance, high costs of insurance, and most importantly, the dependence on foriegn oil. I think that the cities mentioned in this article have public transit systems that are far more advanced than those here.
I interpret the data a little differently. Personally, I moved into the city because it is now more affordable. Housing prices have come down dramatically everywhere, including the big cities. I agree, living without a car can save some money, but my move was to save commuting time and stress. I walk to work everyday now and cut my commute down from 1.5 hours to about 20 minutes. I don't miss sitting in traffic and sitting in train and subway delays at all
If the truth could be told
With the over inflated housing market and the foreclosures People are having to move back into the older wore out houses they run from 20 to25 years ago Now to keep a roof over their head
Do you think they like it ? I don't think so
You probable haven't been around anyone that has worked hard and still lost their home The heart ache they go through I've seen it in a co-worker
Also the big cities have annexed the suburbs into the city limits To get control of the tax base of the large shopping centers that have been built there These small towns worked so hare to get in their neighborhood are being grabbed up without any say so of the people who put them there
These are the same areas that they won't annex in just 10 to 15 years ago They were told becouse of cost
50 million chinese migrate to their big cities every year. if they don't create jobs for them they will riot or starve. the chinese gov't makes an agreement with the USA so the the chinese will loan us money if we buy their products. these products are made by the people migrating to the big cities so they will have a livelyhood and money for food. everybody is happy. how are you going to stop the inevitable? americans aren't going to make .99 cent store products. the products americans make would cost $9.99. besides americans are generally lazy and counter productive which leads to inflation. we all know the story now about america. the late great america.
If I could see your face I bet it'd say HATER all over it.
yea and probably foreigner also,or maybe more government programming at work like it was said attitude's don't change over-night,make us beleive Americans are lazy and we will be.
I can see this, public transportation sucks in this country living "downtown" makes sense it's easier to get around and get to things quickly..
The proven FACT is that large cities are losing their populations in DROVES because of unjustified TAX burdens and loss of liberties...
Just some more lying propaganda generated by Obama's lying new media...
Again... AMERICA KNOWS THE REAL TRUTH !!!
Having lived/grown up in L.A. and my wife in London, we're thrilled to hear that cities are getting bigger. It means even less chance of having neighbors in the middle of "Nowhere, Nevada" where we now live. Keep up the urbanization!
I see this as such good news. Suburban sprawl has led to so many problems in this country: pollution, destruction of farmland and wilderness, people living in isolation, just to name a few. I've lived in suburbia hell, and I'll never go back.
Amen brother (or sister)!!!
What the heck is so great about everybody living in a big city with no pure water, no clean fresh air, no nature, no peace and quiet and everybody living in dinky apartments on top of each other?
I think everybody should get their own little bit of paradise out in the country.
This smells of propaganda -- "SMART GROWTH".
Oh, yeah -- Liberals love living in the cities.
Living in a big city, or actually a small town for that matter, gives you a great sense of community you don't get after years of living in the 'burbs. Cities, however, also offer public transportation, entertainment, cultural exposure, a variety of grocery shopping options...I could go on. BTW, the water here's fine.
If you thrive on Chlorine and Floride, the water's great. I live in the mountains and get fresh mountain water that tastes great.
I wouldn't live in a dirty noisy smelly crowded city for anything. Not to mention it's not a great place to raise kids.
I don't want a 'great sense of community', because most people are pains in the you-know-what once you get to know them...
sanctuary , must be the reason. I left the city yrs. ago and no way would I go back.
But if I were migrant, undocumented oh c'mon let's not mince words. Illegal Immigrant. Yes the cities have plenty to offer the illegal invaders.
"Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, Ore., all on the West Coast, registered growth, boosted partly by foreign-born immigrants who moved into and stayed in gateway cities."
Couldn't be the big cities are being infiltrated by illegal aliens who want more babies, better healthcare and welfare.
Interesting point, but their welfare and healthcare is now collapsing with this economy, especially if the city has a comma and the word California behind it.
You hit the nail on the head, maddog!
Can you say I.O.U.,don't worry I'm good for it.
Hoooo-Woooha, it must be that time of the year again, anyone have a bottle of Chanti and a can of Fava beans?... The 2010 Federal FY budget didn't cut the money for the census bureau or the Non profit census taker, study, think tank, Yale and Harvard persons.
So, now they have to spend that money before they can apply for more, they must think we live in the Middle East or somthin, Maroons!
the cities have spread into the suburbs with the dependent population growing at an alarming rate. That is why there is no one left to move into the exurbs. The exodus from the suburbs has already happened and those who now live in the city/suburbs will never be able to afford the large homes in the exurbs. We are screwed! Until we allow immigrants who want to work, not just go on welfare, we will never get our economy growing again. More dependents than workers means doomsday for our economy.
I recommend who reads this to watch on www.ted.com and click in search James H. Kunstler on the idea of urban sprawl and what it has done to the world and now China and others want to live like Americans consuming linerally. Our economy and environment are hitting a tipping point at the same time, and I hope we learn from it and willing to make the hard choices.
We better change our thinking and teach people to have less children for any hope for the next two generations. Adding another three billion in fifty years is suicide consuming and living the 50's idea of progress has got to change to a new green foundation for any future.
I love being an urban dweller, close to work, close to play, close to entertainment, close to so much I don't have enough time to do it all. We bought a smaller old rehabed home with tons of character after considering a cookie cutter mcmansion way out in the suburbs with a one hour plus commute each way to work. Glad we didn't go there! Life is too short to be in a car or train that long.
Wait - I'm confused. So the city now moves at a faster rater? Or perhaps they mean "Big cities now growing more quickly"?????????
Good gravy.
All these cities mentioned have much to offer, culture, shopping, Pro Sports galore teams, good jobs, quality living, no pollution (LA?)---beautiful housing, outdoor sports--skiing, rafting, hiking, nature.
People today do not want to commute to work. The traffic is horrendous even in these cities.
Urban living sounds good.
I am confused meganame, why do you neglect the other things city life has to offer like;being mugged,or raped,or shot{not that these things only happen in the city-but the chance of ocurrance is un-deniable},give me country life any day,I have peace and quiet,it's laid back here,
Amen to that, jamick.
(This board is crawling with Libs at the moment.)
Don't forget having your car stolen or apartment broken into is no fun either.
How about the biggest benefit to cities.
Jobs!!
I grew up in a rural town. Now I live in a city.
Why, because in rural areas there are virtually no jobs and the few there pay crap salaries.
In most major urban areas, the numbers of jobs are hundreds of times higher than rural areas and the pay is 3-4 times more, even in this economy.
Unless your into agriculture or poverty, live in a city. Most cities are not dangerous unless you go into obviously bad areas.
You can live out in the country and be a half hour commute by car from a mid-sized city with plenty of jobs -- it's called:
QUALITY OF LIFE
Quality of Life is by far better in cities.
More Shopping, Arts and Entertainment, resturaunts, theaters, parks, the list goes on.
rural America has what cows and fields. Mid-size cities (100K+) a few dozen places to work as a professional and maybe a mall or two. bah
We live in the suburbs--guess what, we have more crime, rape, and whatever else mentioned above in all suburbs of this country--I would tend to say the city is far safer.
Do you all remember people who live in small towns or suburbs, say, "I never thought it would happen here"----that's why we moved from the city.
Urban Sprawl is an unsustainable lifestyle. The American Economy will NEVER be the same as it as, it is ALWAYS changing, such is life. It's really pretty mystifying to hear all the hater and unrealistic comments on these threads. Where do these GOP/Right Wing Artisans get these radically polarizing ideas about the future? The world is never going to be the same again, not with China and India competing with the West for raw materials, energy sources such as oil and natural gas, and cheap labor. If Americans had a decent education system maybe there would be some more educated and informed opinions out there but for now we have to work through this ignorant mindset that to reform, modify, and change, even at great expense, large entrenched institutions or segments of the economy, is not socialism, is not communism, it's a natural destructive capitalist activity and it has been done time and time again. Grow up childish GOP parrots who squawk unoriginal phrases and ideas garnered from propoganda radio and tv talk show hosts.
Read some informative books like The Long Emergency, The Enemy Within, and others of this ilk...the future is laid out there for you to see and embrace. You cannot change that which is steaming down the track at all of humanity. Just because you were born in America does not make you special......if you ever spent time outside of your country you would understand how little you really know about the rest of the world and our ever changing role and position in it. Urban Sprawl was never going to be the future, it was a delusional scam brought upon us by real estate development corporations seeking greater and greater profits....nothing was being done to benefit society as a whole....or to create excellent living communities. It was all to feed a corporate structure and design of building more and more and more of everything. Profit over function or design....look at most urban sprawls and they are unsightly, and hardly serving the needs of the human beings that reside there. They are designed totally around the car, not the human.
Sorry friend,
It's the left and it's borg masses that have all the radical doom and gloom ideas regarding our future and yes being born in america does make us special. look around the world it's a ghetto out there, not a single country in the world like america, not a single socialist success story. americans live well, better than peoples in other countries, we don't pay 56% of our incomes to the government like the rest, we don't pay $500, 000 for 600sf of living space like the rest of them. Sounds to me like you need to move to a country you like and get out of ours. If you were born here, then you've had it so well that you don't even realize it, and this also means that you haven't spent any real time outside this country because you would know what the rest of the world is REALLY like, move out and take you're family with you, we don't want you here!!!!!!!!!
Urban Sprawl is an unsustainable lifestyle.
Try telling that to the millions of illegals clogging up our society, who believe they have privileges to destroy the environment and steal taxpayer money.
And as for capitalism, it's made us the most powerful country in the world, the world depends on America, our economy and it'll stay that way providing we maintain a capitalist system, and we are moving at a light speed pace toward socialism with the left in control. The left is the enemy within and at the pace we are moving it won't be long before everyone realizes just how destructive the left really is. Then we will push them out for good!
The left has absolutely, without a doubt destroyed the state of California, unfortunately the general population just doesn't hear enough about the destructive powers of the left in that state but now the enemy within is wielding their destructive powers across this nation and the people will see and hear enough and will finally wake up and run the wackos out of any power in this country.
Start the revolution,I'm in.

And of course the right, with its Prop 13 that cut taxes and refused to raise any anywhere, had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with it. Amazing how you and your ilk had no problem with Bush II sending money overseas for Iraq, but when we try to help our OWN people, you conservatives go berserk. Pathetic.
saggg,
you're asleep at the wheel friend and an example of just one of the borg masses that is being led around by the ring in your nose. An example of your brainwashing is the typical left redundant response labeling me because I oppose the lefts totally wacked out views and policies, I support no party, I'm just your average joe that recognizes that the most dangerous group of people in this country is the left. Mark my words and if you have any of your own mental abilities left pay attention, for in the next year or two you will see the most destructive times in history for the nation and it's people unless the folks wake up and stop it.
Riiiight, JohnD-852521. You constantly attack the left on the posts here and say you "support no party". Please don't insult my intelligence. You're a right wing zealot, hoping that president Obama will fail, like your hero Rush and his crowd do. I hope Obama succeeds so badly you and your ilk are demolished politically so completely and thoroughly, it's for forever.
This is a surprise? It is to be expected as we move toward becoming a more "modern and technologically advanced" working society.
Yeah and we all know what they are being populated with............ go figure it is a rapid pace now that we are getting ready for the next"big" push.... well welcome to the new and improved Mexico!!!!!
Holy #$%@#
That damn global warming, it's now affecting everything, all those folks are going to eat up all the food and we're going to die of starvation before we burn up from the super heated atmosphere!!!!!!!!!!1
Not surprising, during hard times people will always head for the cities because of employment opportunities, cheaper housing , public transportation etc. Stupid story, sorry I looked at it. Tell me more stuff I already know and is meaningless
"yet another sign of an economic crisis that is making it harder for people to move." WHAT? This writer must be on drugs. The cost of living in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, etc. etc. are higher than they've ever been. They are so high that people who want to live there can't.
City population is increasing because Generation Y dislikes the suburbs. That's why. It's got nothing to do with the recession. If anything, the recession is forcing people who want to live in the city out of it.
well yeah but when you get everything for free what difference does it make?.... hell I could live anywhere
Free? That's a joke. In Seattle, the Mexicans live south, near SeaTac, 20 miles outside of the city. If you want to live in Seattle, it's $350,000 for a somewhat decent condo. And that's only because of the housing collapse. It wasn't long ago they were going for $450,000.
Go 9 miles north to the burbs, you can get a full on 2800sqft house w/lot for $400,000.
In terms of value, living in the city is a terrible decision, which is why none of the immigrants live here. You need a good job and a decent wage to live within 10 miles of the city center itself.
Section 8 housing? You don't have a move the crime to my neighborhood program there?..... Yet?
Seattle is a mess. The city has grown far beyond its road system. I hate even passing through the place on I-5... just a massive traffic jam. Too bad, it used to be ok back in the early/mid 1990's. Same has happeded to pretty much all US cities... they turn into massive overpopulated sprawls. Portland was the last of the nice metro areas and it too has gotten too big.
