I agree with most people that GM should can Buick not Pontiac. If you want a luxury car my a Cadillac. If you want a performance sedan Buy a Pontiac. Buick is just a low budget granny car. I always hated the decisions that corporate GM has been making in the last 20 years. No wonder they are having trouble. I wish I could run the damn company so I could turn it around. Improve quality and turn it into a respectable leader in the auto industry.

One more thing, when it comes to buying a vehicle, most people think about how they will look in that vehicle whether it's a truck or a car. I find that people want to be seen in a good looking car. but if that car falls apart in less than five years and breaks down they most likely won't buy another. However, most people won't buy a very reliable hideous looking car either.

GM has been getting better at quality but as been getting much worse at producing what most people want or need. I love the Pontiac G8. I was planning to buy one. With GM making stupid decisions like phasing out Pontiac.......It just makes me want to sell every GM vehicle I own and never buy anything from GM again.

Pontiac has built the sportiest thing onthe road today. I believe this is a bad move on GM's part. Pontiacs were the most original thing GM had. They would outhandle any Chevy on the road.

It is sad that Pontiac is gone, but your argument is the very reason GM is in trouble. They've been churning out mostly overpriced garbage for years. If they still made quality cars at a decent price the foreign car market wouldn't stand a chance, but they don't. Should the American people pay more for an inferior product just because its made in America? How about the carmakers showing a bit of this kind of patriotism and putting more reasonable prices on them so the general public can afford to buy one? No. It's more important to keep the unions happy than the public and the final product shows the results of that compromise. Also, if you can't buy an affordable car you'll lease one that you can't afford, and then the company starts a cycle of neverending car payments.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on my 3rd Jeep Wrangler, my wife is on her 4th Grand Cherokee and for us there's no substitute for a Jeep vehicle. I never thought I'd buy anything but a Jeep again, but I bought mine new 11 years ago and this year's model is $15k more that I paid, stripped, and gets WORSE gas milage than mine does on an engine with 100k+ miles. I've been waiting for Jeep to come out with a hybrid wrangler, or at least one with decent milage, for 3 years now and I'll wait until my car falls apart but the days are growing short.

everyone talks about 'how crappy' GM cars are... I don't see it, except in cases where people drove the piss out of the cars/trucks & DIDN'T MAINTAIN them. And I grew up working in a GM/Pontiac franchise, that later added GMC & Buick.

Now - to set the record straight - I have had Honda Odyssey minivans that have eaten 2 transmissions each in less than 120k miles (with all req'd factory services), family members have had Toyotas with sludged engine issues & trans issues, etc...

Any manufacturer can have issues - GM starved their lines of products for ages, I will agree. But GM will probably live with Buick, Chevrolet CARS, and GMC as the truck line... my bet is that Chevrolet truck line will die - if GM first survives open-heart surgery...

I think GM makes good cars. So does Ford and Chrysler. I had well over 200k on my 1992 Dodge Caravan and was looking for 300 when I finally traded it. They all make crappy cars too.

I disagree on one thing though. I think the GMC name will go before Chevrolet when it comes to trucks. There the same thing anyway.

One is even a Chevy tracker and one is a Ford Explorer, and I prefer the Ford. More comfortable and gets almost the same gas milage as the little Tracker. Go figure. I even see it where I work. Corporate makes wrong choices and sticks with them even though they lose money at it, but to make up the difference we are going to cut jobs and blame the union.

It has always amazed me that the US, with more drivers and car enthusiasts than almost anywhere else and great innovation in so many areas, can't compete with the Japanese, for heaven's sake, in making great modern cars. The American car manufacturers don't seem to look to the future. Very little of what they produce is new or fresh and quality always seems poorer in comparison to the Japanese or European cars. They need to fundamentally change the way they do business. Taxpayers should not be bailing them out because if they keep going the way they are, they will fail anyway.

You don't know what you're talking about. The perception that the imports is better is just that, a perception. Check out some of the new product from Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ford and GM and I think you'll be surprised. There is some great product out there. Although admittedly there were quality issues in the past, that is history. The mistake we made was allowing the Japanese to "dump" product when they were entering our markets, and we are suffering for it. The Japanese cars are much less value for the dollar in todays market.

Those of us who buy, own, drive, and pay the repair bills for automobiles do know what we are talking about. The perception that the imports are better is based on the fact that they are. Who was the first manufacturer to offer a 10 year 100k mile warranty on there product? I would love to be able to support American made products but they need to get back to making a quality product. In Japan as in Germany they take great pride in there craftsmanship and quality. In America it's unions first, profits second, and quality last.

They DO make a quality product! Have you checked out Ford's vehicles? The Fusion is a great car, and is now outselling the Camry! Ford is back to # 2. And for your info, we(union workers), DO take pride in our work, just as much as you do at your job. Most Americans dont wanna hear that they are being outdone by foreign competition, and the same holds true for you too I will bet. So, go check out a Ford product, and then come back and still tell us how much better a car Toyota is! I bet you will be surprised!!

I loved Pontiac myself and I grew up in the late 70's early 80's. I'll miss Pontiac and I agree, Buick should have been the one to get the ax. Buick doesn't have an affordable line and it's to me, wayyyyy overpriced. Sorry to see ya go Pontiac!

That's inirteresting thought, and it makes sense in GM's demise. I never liked the idea of GM to have rebaged copies of so many cars, trucks, and SUVs. It's very dificult for any Brand to have identity with the constraints the executives put on them. There was no way Pontiac could bring back the GTO with any kind of success when they where stuck using components from the Holden car company. There was nothing special about that body design. It was just extreemly conservative. GM should have just limited the brands to the most popular models, not kill a whole brand of car. The VOLT and Camaro WILL NOT save GM. Killing Pontiac and pruducing dull boring cars will finish off the dieing giant.

Exacltly, do you think I will buy a Buick whatever because I can't buy a Pontiac G8. Instead I'll look to Chrysler, Ford or maybe the brands from across the ocean.

I'm with you. Since the G8 was released on the internet I've wanted nothing more. I was waiting to payoff my '05 Grand Prix to get a new G8 but I don't know what I'll buy now. I'm heart broken!

So are many of the compact cars and trucks. ever look under the hood of a Ford Ranger? Mitsubishi engine and tranny. just like many other compact models. And it's hard to tell the difference in the body's of the Ranger, Colorado, Toyota, and the other small trucks.

The Ford Ranger was actually just a rebadged Mazda because Ford owns Mazda. And Volvo. And Landrover. And Jaguar. Companies share parts between their brands, and with each other. IE Kia. Kia's minivan has the obyssey engine, but it looks a little better than the odyssey and its cheaper. And Hyundai owns Kia so the fantastic quality and style that we've being seen from Hyundai of late, shows up in Kia vehicles. Its a big circle. its sad to see Pontiac go, but their best cars will probably be just rebadged as Chevs or one of the other brands. It's not like they were just solely Pontiacs anyways. The Saab 93 (or is it the 97, i don't remember) is actually just an expensive Impala with fancier parts and more cab insulation to make it seem quieter.

Purchase a 2009 AWD Pontiac Vibe. Last vehicle Chevy S-10 standard four, with about the same fuel mileage sold to my brother after 189,000 miles on it. American pickups competes with the world, and will outlast if kept up with easily available parts, most vehicles. In rural areas the dealerships are for American Vehicles. Before all those City SUVs and Stretch out Pickups, pickups were used and still are used for industry, ranch and farm work. Our local dealers sell far more pickups than any other vehicles, and sometimes more pickups than any other dealersvehicles because my hometown is the main trading center for the Navajo Nation.
