People are listening to the hype on the 24 hour news cycle. We all need to take a breath and go back to basics.....banks too. The hedge funds, derivatives, and soverign wealth funds need to be regulated. GM will not reorganize as long as the Government is bailing...why should they?
We have been pigs at the trough for 15 years...now we're paying....All that Credit, our house is built on sand.
Sunny
Could not agree more. If you're working and paying your bills as always, and more than 5 years or so from retirement, turn OFF the TV, quit watching the stock market, and take your family out to dinner (and pay CASH). Keep living.
Amen the media is dooming us we need to draw a line in the sand and move forward
WTF does that mean? A line in the friggin' sand? Move forward? What, with more tax cuts?
The sub-prime debacle, which started the melt down, is a combination of stupidity on the part of many borrowers, the greed of many lenders, and the consequences of the "Carter-Clinton Contagion." Carter was the brainchild of the legislation to lower standards and give loans, in the name of 'fairness,' to people who couldn't afford them. Clinton put the legislation on steroids, threatening banks and lenders with legal action if they didn't go along. All in the name of 'fairness.' Excess has ruled the day for 25 years and anything short of a painful cure is simply ensuring that we'll deal with the issue again. The hurt is here to stay for quite a while, I'm afraid to say, and there's little our "leaders" can do about it. Government causes the problem but government is the solution?
I listened to Buffet this morning on cnbc. This man is a very successful investor, but he is not God. What is it about this self-destructive culture that constantly elevates certain individuals to such godly celebrity status? If he knew what was going to happen eighteen months ago, why was he (and the infamous media) so quiet about it? His Pearl Harbor Army-Navy analogy was very confusing. It was the reckless and criminal "kamakazis" who created all of the destruction, and they should be held accountable for their actions. Why can't he recognize that? And why should he be so supportive of Obama when the market began to dive as soon as Obama appeared on the horizon as a serious candidate? And it's been steadily falling eversince. Warren Buffet is not God, and the media needs to stop hyper-inflating him as the Charlie Brown balloon at the Thanksgiving Day Parade..
Let the banks fail. I can't tell you all the horrible things banks did to homeowners back in the early eighties when Americans couldn't pay their mortgages besides take away their home and resell it for more money. I'm happy their greed got the best of them and their scheme to make the ultimate profit off of foreclosed homes backfired on these scumbags. Let them all fail it's the rich that will kill themselves, the poor know how to survive.
there are a lot of reporters that should be tried for treason and then shot. back in the thirtys the reporters were a lot more honest and told the facts. today reporters try to grab peoples hearts to sell papers and the the strongest public emotion is fear. the way many media outlets are reporting is just as bad as a terrorist jumping out in a crowd at the superbowl and letting loose with a minigun. seriously some of these reporters should be stopped . bin laden is probably thinking he should have owned a newspaper instead.... it works better...
" . . .when the market began to dive as soon as Obama appeared on the horizon as a serious candidate?" This mess is somehow Obama's fault? Are you kidding? I must just misunderstand what your point is. Otherwise, you've been listening to Rush too much.
There is truth to these comments. Debt to equity percentages are at record highs. There has been considerable unregulated and self-serving careless behavior by businesses. Fortunately, reduced interest rates and stimulus funds will help prevent the situation from worsening.
Amen Sunny, people are sheep. we listen to the media, all they report is bad news, qwe get negative. Maybe if the media would report with what is right in the country people would star feeling better about us as a whole and slowly start to spend and invest
I agree with sunny5 and OmahaGal. We need to turn off our 24 hour news shows and guit letting the media tell us how bad things are because it sells advertising. We can not do anything about the stock market so quit watching - it will return. Let GM and Ford go under and they will come back stronger and better!
Between the mom with 14 kids, the bail out of banks , the Church giving the boot to a 9 year old raped girl for getting an abortion- to save her life, preachers being shot, tent cities poping up,4 million out of work and climbing,China, the whole Middle East, the Rush VS. Obama game, T O going to Buffalo, Gay's, Stem cells, FOX NEWS Vs. the sane world,GM folding, child abuse, and the only happy guy is the one who took a bottle of Viagra-had sex with two women and exploded. There is a lesson here.
Chicken Little has declared the sky fallen and all the Goosey Looseys are believing it!! You are absolutely correct! Is there a problem, yes, but since the media has declared it a disaster the problem has grown.
Stop watching the news ALL DAY LONG!!! They all sell doom and gloom Its time to think positive and we can get out of this ..Its a mind set Lets first buy only american made goods!! AMERICA FIRST
The worst is yet to come. The liberal tax increase's will be the final blow.
I absolutely agree with Sunny and others on this thread. The media is scaring people because they have a saying "if it bleeds, it leads." This means, if it's frightening, or negative, then it will be first on the broadcast. Bad news sells.
I have faith that we will get out of this, we are Americans. The government MUST help, they are the only one with enough money to do anything to change what has been happening for the past 8 years. To do nothing only assures that nothing will change, which only benefits the same people whose greed got us here in the first place.
If people like Mr Warren Buffet would just shut up the market would start rebounding. All he wants to do is drive the market down so he can buy more at low prices and sell high later on when the market does turn around.
The "economic" problem is as real as the "big boys" want us to feel.
If we would just go back to supply and demand and have the government get out of our lives, with we the people running the country, things would be much better. The negative news media helps no one, bail outs are not going to work. We need to vote for the correct choices and right now we don't have much of one. It will be 2010 before we see another election within the states and hopefully we still have a country by next year.
Lack of experience shows! This administration is a joke! What is happening now is the result of over twenty years, going back to Carter's ideas. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame! NEXT IS SOCIALISM! Just watch!
Actually this has been going on for over sixty years when USA, Isreal, Germany, Japan and other countries conspired WWII as a means for population reductions in their countries, JFK wanted to end the CIA "Criminals in Action" look what they did to him, Obama is just a puppet, 911 was an inside job, the new depression was planned a long time ago, stop watching tv and at least try to open your eyes to the truth, ya it's scary, but the more people see the truth the more power the Bilderburghers lose, so much to say and very little space, never mind my responce being moderated.
Good Luck and Love to everyone.
Let's be careful about how we regulate the market place. Investors are not too big to fail. Why should we protect investors from their own foolishness? I believe that the investors have the right to fail in a fair market place. Given a fair and decent market place some investors will unfortuneately fail. Over regulating the market place makes about as much sense as bailing out the failed investors. --Chris--
Actually, they've been at the trough for since 1981. Ronald Reagan is the reason behind all of this. I just wish the Obama Administration would release his files. THAT would be a real eye opener!!
Turning off the TV isn't going to eliminate this administration from turning America into a shi'thole! You can't deny what is happening around us even though you want to close your eyes and make believe this isn't happening. This isn't about clicking our heals and saying "There's no place like home!"
All of the above ... interesting! It's not possible to solve all our problems through Washington. Back to the States, our cities, towns, and villages, take care of our family, friends, and neighbors. Handle what we have some control over...then communicate with local reps to make a difference. Everyone talks talks talks, me included, but then we don't really try to change.
Sunny
The amount of wealth lost by almost everyone in this country is going to take several years to get over. I believe we will see double digit unemployment thru 2010, maybe even 2011 and economic recovery will be very slow and deliberate when it starts...but it will start and America will lead the rest of the world out of this global downturn as she has in the past.
We have all lost about 50% of our investments, retirement funds and real-estate values so far. Even so, now it not the time to panic and bail out of the market place. Long-term investments will prevail. All we need to do is go back to work, earn a living, and stay out of debt. We can payoff our short-term credit card debt and still have money left over, if we spend our money wisely. Now is the time to get out of debt and stay out of debt. You are right, America will survive and prosper in the long-run. In the meantime, we need to control our excess spending and get out of debt. --Chris--
One question I would like answered is that of all the foreclosures how many are recent purchases, within past five years, and how many were sub-prime or far more than homeowners could safely handle? Most of all how many of them had tapped into their skyrocketing equity, using it as a piggy bank to remodel or travel or live above their means? How many chose to consume rather than put six months living expenses in a rainy day account?
And how many are people who have lived in their home for ten years or more, paid down their standard mortgage without refinancing for anything other than lower interest rate and have minimal or no credit card debt are facing foreclosure?
I'm pretty sure the latter group are not what's driving foreclosures. I'm angry because I'm in that group, have a low mortgage and no debt, yet I've seen my diversified retirement account drop by 40% because of many people's greed and foolishness. All of us pay when others think the rules don't apply to them. That's the real tragedy here. And that's what will take a long time to sort itself out. The economy will recover sooner rather than later, but trusting will take longer and change the way things are done. That's probably a good thing but will claim a lot of innocent victims.
We pouring billions into banks..why aren't they lowering credit card rates? How are people expected to pay bills when if you miss a payment, they raise the rates ridiculously and the banks are paying zero interest for money. Why is Obama addressing this? We giving stupid people who took out mortgages they could never afford with the banks throwing the money at them help, why not people who have had banks throw unsolicitated credit cards at them for years and years, where is the break for the averge person? The one who is trying to pay bills, keep their job, pay their taxes and now pay for the banks' problems. The financial sector got us into this thru their greed. Where is the Help is On the Way for us???
The wisdom displayed by the folks above convinces me that, though we haven't hit bottom, with some real "housecleaning", the US will probably lead the way once again. Wall Street won't "rebound" until some enforceable regulations are forced through, and the "pigs at the trough" can more directly answer investors.
Over regulation of the marketplace is not the answer. The only way to stop the "pigs at the feed trough" in Washington, is the replace them at the voting booth. That means, we need to vote for decent candidates, who will oppose wasteful spending bills in both the house and senate. Let's do our part and cast our votes in the upcoming elections. --Chris--
The fraud that we put in office will send us into a tailspin like we have never seen. Sit back and watch.
To BM - The fraud that was put in office - George Bush - has sent us into this tailspin. President Obama is working with us to get us out of this Republican mess.
Your comment is ignorant. The last eight years of Republican leadership put us into this tailspin. Until everyone tightens their belts and rethinks their priorities, President Obama will be fighting an uphill battle. How long until the Republicans in Congress figure out that their little party is over and they better get on board or get off the dock.
well said WGoin... Repugs keep crying like its Obamas fault- wake up people Obama inherited this giant mess! and we all have to suck it up and do whats necessary to get out of the mess....
Bush has some fault in this but ask yourself who was running the Finance and the Banking committee. Who has the most to gain from having our financial system failing - those that want you to give all the power to gov. Don't be fooled - Reb or Dem what is happening is against our constitution.
Obama did not inherit a mess. He was part of the mess, as a Senator for the last 4 years. He did not do anything then, he is not doing anything helpful now.
He is running around like a chicken without a head, throwing other people money to the wrong issues.
If he is really serious about the economy he has to concentrate on fixing the banking system, finding competent people to man the Treasury Department (14 vacancies??)
If a bank hired a CEO with absolutely no experience, of any kind, doing anything, you certainly would expect that bank to crumble. So, why shouldn't the US crumble, because that is exactly what is running this country now. You can't blame Bush for the stupid policies of Dodd and Franks. Get real. Fannie and Freddie were doing what they were teed up to do. If Obama doesn't up and realize he is over his head, this country won't exist in 8 years.
I believe the dems have held power since 2006, can't blame Bush for all this.
Anyone that believes you can spend your way out of debt is an idiot.
I like honest answers and Yes Obmaha was a Senator so some of this mess he has contributed to.
Answer to all this mess! It has biblical roots believe me and if we want the USA to recover from this tail spin you better start praying to a higher power because any fix will be temp. Long term recovery belongs to God and what we do as Christians! Like it or not this is the correct Answer!
What Obama did not inherit was 911 like our brave GW did. How soon you democrats forget, just like NAFTA, which should have been a FAIR Trade Agreement thank you Bill,(I did not have sexual relations with that girl), Clinton. That's where the tailspin started now we have more Cilnton and world will be a very dangerous world within the next four years. I feel so sorry for our kids and grandchildren having to pay back such a ridiculous debt. Live in a free country or move OUT, freedom isn't free. BM-556632 your rite
Good. You useless bombthrowers should sit back and let the rest of us fix the mess 30 years of Republican dominated rule has brought us.
It is bizarre how ready some ignorami are to blame Obama for this mess, or to accuse him/his administration, or the party of making it worse. This has been building for years and years and years and years and years. DYGIY?
Hey, how about us useless bombthrowers just sit back and let YOU pay for all of the ridiculous programs being forced down our throats? works for me.
Yep.President Barama never even owned a lemonade stand let alone a real business. He has no clue.He also appoints the Mark Rich schill - bagman Eric Holder as attorney general. Barack H. Obama is a facist trying to mix it with socialism. He is in the unions pocket. He and michelle see america as big brother knowing everything about everybody and controling all things -so do not buck obamas system. HEY Barama!WHOA!!!just give all households 30,000.00 .Barack only 900 billion. What a deal!!!! WE THE PEOPLE NEED OUR OWN MONEY TO PAYOFF OUR OWN DEBTS WE KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES!!!!
Awww! You poor sorry sap! You think that if you do nothing everything will work it's way out. Right? Don't blame this mess on Buffett and Cramer and all of those Wall street traitors! Blame this on a new president. You need to wake up! Wall street and all those that made money are the ones to blame. The banks were giving out loans to anyone that could walk and talk! And they made millions on it! You need to do some research before you start blaming a new President that has been in office for what? 6 or 7 weeks. Your buddy Jim Cramer has alot of explaining to do. He wrote the book on "Short Sale" and "Naked Short Sale" of stocks. Google it! You would be enlightened! And then come back and we will talk!
I am more than willing to pay the dues required to live in a civil society, otherwise known as taxes. I don't appreciate those who think they should have roads, schools, mail service, FDIC insurance, disaster loans, bridges, libraries, armed forces, clean air and water, safe food, medical advances etc without having to pay for them. Perhaps you should consider living off the grid where you can fend for your own sorry self and see how that goes for you. It would be more productive than sitting back and criticizing those who have constructive suggestions and are willing to contribute their time and money to implementing them.
How Quickly you want to sweep the fact that Obama back in his Community Activist days was the lead Atty. that sued HSBC and City Bank to give loans to undeserving minorities. These banks caved because they were afraid to face the hoards of protesters that Obama and Co. planned to send to their branches and the Racist brand they would have been saddled with.
The only thing you Dems have to throw around is Republicans are Racist,Homophobic and Mean Spirited. I am so happy that we are starting to tell you all so what????.Every time a person lets fear dictate their actions they will loose. You Democrats cannot have it every way we are no longer afraid.
You like to give other peoples money well not this time . Obama is so generous but has his brother living in a hut in Kenya on $1.00 per month. That Hypocrite is telling you that you should be helping everyone but he is doing what. Waiting for you through some charity to help his Brother. Wake up Democrats... Obama is so ashamed of Blacks ,he will make many of them suffer,he is equally angry with Whites and will make them pay for what he feels you have done to Blacks.
This twisted joker makes a pretzel look straight. You got snookered by a sweet talking Pimp. No better than the crud that hangs out a Greyhound bus station sweet talking the innocent country teenager that traveled to the big city. He is not book smart as nothing he has ever written will ever be presented to the public, but he is street smart enough to know that the appearance is everything.Be disciplined ,use smooth speech dress nice have the right family and be seen with the right folks and use them all to climb as far as one can get. Then drop them when you have what you want.Have you seen Oprah at any White House gathering. Think the Brits. think he is so nice now, hey they thought he was the Cats PJ before the Election. Now they are realizing that he is a classless ,selfish, and self important clod.
No matter what he is the 44th President and the first Black man in this Office he really does not care about a second term. If it happens then fine but his place in History is assured. You are so not needed ...So all you Dems. who thought he was working for you will soon find out you worked for him and now you will pay as he shakes up your society to bewaht he believes it to be.
You thought Bush was an Idiot , he was not the Pimp speaking sweet nothings into your ear trying to make you feel good. Instead he choose to defend you against the Evil he knew were trying to destroy you and your way of life. Just like the Pimp he is Devious Obama will unleash the Evil on you from within your own borders.. Just hope you will be able to protest and say all the things you had to say about Bush or Clinton without facing repercussions.
Amen. It started with Carter - and was enlarged by Clinton. Obama has neither the skill nor experience to lead this country effectively.
So what President has had the experience to lead this country effectively?
I don't think you can blame all of this on any one administration or party, this is a combination of bad policy, corporate screw ups, and greed at all levels including people asking for loans they couldn't afford and the people and regulators making sure they got the loans they had no business asking for. Just because you see something you want does not mean you should have it. Life is about making choices and those choices always have consequences some good some bad. A lot of people complaining about how far in the hole they are probably don't share the wealth when things go their way so they should learn to deal with their situation when things go against them. That is the way life is and you have to make the best of it instead of looking for someone else to make it better.
I also don't think the current administration has the life experience to deal with the economic fallout. If the country is in debt and we are in a debt driven recession it does not make sense to take on more debt to fix the problem. Anyone who has ever had to depend on themselves for a living should know this. From what I have seen the people making decisions don't know anything about working for a living and have no clue what earning a living is like. They have had things handed to them their whole lives and the way they are throwing money around shows it. I think we are in for a hell of a bumpy ride until they learn some fiscal discipline or we elect some people who know that the money well is not bottomless.
The Good to come:
Families will have to all live in the same house again; Grandma and Grandpa and the whole family living together again will mean the family might be a unit again.
People will discover that they need each other to survive. Maybe some will learn some kindness.
People will hopefully find out that they should not look at a President as a God. Maybe they will take another look at who God really is and the place he should have in their lives.
I believe that this time in our History will be the "Great Correction" and it is about time because greed, selfishness and all out sin rule in America right now. As one poster said above, we are indeed reaping what we all have sown.
BM, AMEN! The fraud that we put in office in 2000, against the WILL OF THE MAJORITY, was the beginning.
If The Supremes had listened to AMERICAN VOICES in 2000, and if the WILL OF THE MAJORITY had been enforced, Bush would have never been Prez.
Oh, and all you people screaming about the WILL OF THE MAJORITY in CA as you spew your anti-gay vitriole, what did you think about Bush in 2000?
One thing I have noticed lately is the rise of the "BLUE DOG" democrats. I believe it will be up to the BLUE DOGS in the democratic party to save us from the upcoming tailspin. The republicans can't stop the tailspin by themselves. We need to wake up the BLUE DOGS, before it is too late. --Chris--
What recession??? You might want to add depression to the multiple choice. I don't know why depression is not on the list because that is exactly where we are headed. Printing way to much money when we should be letting the markets correct themselves. Get ready for hyper-inflation and a very very weak dollar. Stock up on gold and guns...depression by 2010.
If everyone in this country had this mindset, we definitely will see a depression. It took many years of avarice and greed by the government, by Wall Street and by the American citizen and it wil take some time to work it all out.
Don't be too harsh on the President. He only has about six weeks in office. I think it is probably unrealistic to expect to see much for at least 12 months. After all, the market began it's turn in late 2007 under another regime.
I also think that if you have the resources and you do your home work, there are some very good real estate and stocks that I would not hesitate to jump on. You are looking at bargain basement prices.
Let's be realistic and say that the Dow drops to 1,000 or even 500. I suppose all of this doom and gloom could almost drive it there but it would certainly not be a valid measurement of the true value of the stocks whch comprise the Dow.
I am being more cautious but otherwise it is business as usual for me and I am just a middle class guy.
MARTIN.GRAY---bravo, u may be the smartest one here. Everyone needs your attitude!!!
I appreciate Martin.Gray's opinion and I too am just a middle class gal with money still to spend. however, the driving force behind my tight-fisted purse strings in the lack of confidence in a president who has zero experience and has surrounded himself with people whom i do not trust. The money he is spending is maddening, especially on programs that are not neccessary at this time.
I will say that when he won the election, i was ready to put it all behind me and support him, with the naive idea that he would select wonderful trustworthy individuals to surround him. Oh, was I wrong. can't trust or respect the guy for his choices.
I heard 20 minutes direct sunlight a day should ward off depression; so I'm doing it.
Sparky...If you had money you should be spending it. Stop with the "This president has no experience" No president has experience to be President unless they ARE President (except for G W Bush, he was just an idiot). Just think in 4 years this president will be the one with experience! HAHAHAHA!
St. Theresa
Why then did everyone jump on Sarah Palin who did at least have experience in running a very large state? I think this is warped thinking to condemn someone with experience who happens to be Republican and then blasting anyone who doesn't think Mr. Obama (a Democrat) has any experience. I'm sorry, but he just doesn't seem to be making the right decisions and his choices are very questionable. Why do you let some tax cheats in and others have to back out? Mr. Obama has to answer for Mr. Obama!
Ruth, I second that HA! Being mayor of a town of a little over 5,000 is usually a part time job and she hired an admin. assistant to help with that. As far as Governor of a large state? In land, not population. Check out what Alaskans are saying now. She had been in office less than 2 years when McCain took a chance on her being our President. The very thought makes me feel ill. I worked in county government for 20 years and believe me, just because you can get elected by a small population, does not qualify you to run this Country.
St. Theresa, you be wrong. And you shouldn't spoil the name of St. Theresa! I do have money. I am freaking loaded. and i'm keeping it until I know what this inexperienced man who has appointed a tax cheat to run our treasury department does with this mess. that's my right...because whether you like it or not...it is still America! I fought my way from the very bottom to the where I am without a dime of assistance. NO ONE, especially someone as idiotic as you, is going to tell me to spend my money.
And amen MadVeteran! You are right on! That's some good old-fashioned Double-standard from St. theresa and all of your liberal friends!
Gold and guns are not the sole answer. We do need to keep and bear arms as defined by the 2nd ammendment. Hording gold, silver and gemstones is not the answer. The real answer is to get out of debt and stay out of debt. Keep your credit cards and use them wisely as they will be needed for emergency spending in the future. Also, we need to follow wise, long-term investment plan. In the meantime, we need to get out of debt and stay out of debt, while we are saving for our future. Cash is king, especially in a depressed economy. We need to stop our wasteful spending and get out of debt before the upcoming inflation ocurrs.
Gold ownership is OK for now but, when the government bans private gold ownership, you will have precious little time to sell your gold. Private gold ownership has been banned in the past and may be banned in the future. Now you know why, we should not be hording gold. As for gun confiscation, it will be up to each person to avoid the temptation to report on your friends and neighbors. We must look out for our neighbors and hopefully they will look out for us. Good luck and be safe. --Chris--
What we need to do is to realize that the economic fall is a result of years of bad management by BOTH Republicansand Democrats. Much like the attack on 9/11, there are many facets of the failure and enough blame to pass around including the American people. This current situation will last until next year at least and it will be a slow recovery.
Well put and we have to let the recovery begin and realize we are going to have inflation for years to come after we get back to work that is just a price all of us are going to have to pay. So we need to stop the blame game because it really goes back many many years we have just forgotten like we always do. We are going to come out of this a much stronger and a better Country. We will have control of our own lives again.
That "we will come out of this a much stronger and better Country" will last for a bout two weeks into the recovery, then it's the same American mentality, forgive and forget.
Yeah dave, your right about us American's but i do hope you are wrong.
Too bad americans forget so quickly that they go back to the bad money mangement that got this country where it is now. It all goes in cycles.
figment, so true.
Millions of people bought houses they couldn't afford from 2001-2005. And THESE are the people we decide to give money to! Who is stupid now?
We are seeing an economic correction take place which is always difficult, but very healthy in the long run. A move towards personal savings and responsibility corrects for years of credit abuse and over leveraging. Unfortunately our capitalist economy will take time to adjust. It will come back almost emmediately after emotions and fear cool down.
Bingo! Do you all hear this???? longshanks has made the best assessment I've heard yet! Quit blaming [insert your favorite hated political party here] and get to work being prudent, eliminating the emotion, work toward rebuilding your savings, 401k, etc. and get on with our lives. If you were overextended shame on you! If you have a rainy day fund to carry you through good for you! Remember when you point a finger, you have 4 more pointing back at you.
Obama pushed the Economy off the Cliff, on purpose, because he has no experience in anything constructive. He's truely ignorant of the perils of everyday life for American Workers. If he used E-Verify on every job we wouldn't have a shortage of JOBS. Not only that but our Tax Dollars would go twice as far because we wouldn't be supporting the Mexican Invaders.
Mikeee W - talk about someone with no experience or intelligence - your comments are so naive as to be laughable if they weren't so ignorant. Obama has only been in office for 45 days. This mess is not his faultl. What were you thinking with that comment?
Do the research you can't blame him. It took many more yrs to get us in this mess. (Google: Keating five)
ya ok Mikee Obama started this mess somehow before he got elected right?? I suppose you voted McCain who didnt even realize we had any problems with the economy- man I sure wish "That One" had been elected!!
Obama may not of started the mess, but he sure isnt helping by giving away billions of our dollars to failing companies. And i think if Bush could get blamed for all the intelligence problems of 9/11 that he inherited from Bill then why not blame Obama for problems he inherited.
Haven't you seen in the past that sometimes the smartest person in the room doesn't understand have the basic understanding of the true problem.....The Mortgage Back Securities and Derivatives have been packaged up in such complex securities because someone was "inventing" a better class of investment instead of keeping with the KISS principal (Keep is Simple Stupid). I'm sure if we could trace it back to whomever was the "genius" in this matter and treat it like a giant ponzi scheme we would get some results in unraveling them....
Let's find the "genius" that relaxed the lending requirements to those that didn't have enough sense to scratch their nose when it itched and then signed a mortgage for $350K and had no intention of paying for it. If they did, they wouldn't have signed it in the first place. Those are the thieves who left in the middle of the night. Those are the thieves that need to be prosecuted. Without their stupidity, there would have been nothing to package up and sell as securities. Oh, I forget, they're victims. Bull.
Clearly, our economic outlook is bleak. Our president's inexperience is now coming to light. The social programs he proposes are impossible to fund without a strong economy. He and his administration must start there. Forget socialized medicine and tax increases and repair the economy first. Otherwise, there will have to be another bailout for people like me who have lost most all their retirement and have nothing to live on.
nitrox, good thinking. great comments. the new administration spending money that we do not have on new social programs are only creating more people in NEED of these programs...you and me who have been able to support ourselves all of these years and put away the money to continue until the day we die to support ourselves.
The President needs to realize that our investment needs to recover, our economy needs to recover NOW, so that WE can take care of ourselves. and so that we can continue to earn, to spend, to create capital to fund the programs that are already in place. If money must be spent...spend money on improving the programs that we already have. SAVE money by helping only those who cannot help themselves and by eliminating the cheaters of these programs.
These 'gyrations' in the stock market are no laughing matter, Mr. President. You need to help the regular hard working people of this country to keep what we have to avoid becoming another hand being held out for assistance!
what i cant figure out is why people cant understand that rome wasnt built in a day. give the man a chance. another thing i cant understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is that mr. obama is 50% white, why cant these biggets recognize the other 50% that comes from his mother? A white as rice beauty. i guess that would make him more credible. god forbid that all these
I never gave one dang about what color he is. It never matter to me. the liberals wanted to MAKE it matter to us. it is bull! White as Rice? wow...now that's a little racist, isn't it? hmmmmm another double standard...i'd be a horrible person had I said black as night!
Catherine - Interesting point, Obama is 50% white, but the media always reported him as our first "black" President. His skin color never mattered to me, my decision was always based on his honesty, ethics, policies, associations, past relationships, lack of experience and beliefs and I voted against him. The Democrats always tried to make this about race to avoid the spotlight on his past and his agenda. Unfortunately my worst fears have come true. He is far too liberal, his inexperience is telling and his cabinet picks disappointing. As much as he is trying to socialize America we should all be alarmed.
Until the Republicans stop playing politics with people's misery, and step up to support our nation's ELECTED leader, things will continue to slip into chaos. They seem to hope this will somehow be to their political advantage. To hell with those they hurt! Their putrid strategy to climb back into power is expressed in "I hope he fails..." What an immoral twit! Here's a news flash to the congressional “dittoheads:” Your guy LOST! You are now doing a very good job of proving why he lost. We may have to get rid of a lot more Republicans in congress before we can get serious about recovery.
Liberals cursed a good economy for six years. Dems took over majority and with help from press finally drove it down. Now the whiners are calling it Bush's failure. Bible says you can have what you say. Fix it smart guys-you're in power.
How is the economy going to recover by spending over a trillion dollars that we don''t have? We cannot spend our way out of this.
ummm and how would you fix the economy Rtepublicans?? unfortunately we DO need a "Stimulas" and spend money, we certainly need to stop unemployment!
You are wrong on 2 fronts. It is the Democrats who wanted Bush to fail (look at past polls). Rush L. only wants the Obama agenda to fail because in his view he is hurting the economy and the people who did nothing wrong.
Secondly, the Republicans in the Congress are resisting the Obama aggenda because they feel that it is wrong, not for politically reasons.
The fact is the Obama budget is giving money away with no return benefit, mostly to his constituency. The right policy is obviously to cut taxes to businesses which in turn will hire people and restore the economy.
Why would a republican, or democrat for that matter, support something they don't believe in? If everyone was supposed to vote for this bill just because the president brought it to the table, then what is the purpose of the seperate parties, or to have a vote at all?
You just want to complain about Republicans. You know that "unjust war" that was mentioned earlier? well, if it were so unjust....then why did Hillary Clinton, and many other democrats support it? see my point...you don't support something unless you truly believe in it otherwise it comes back to haunt you when it is called a mistake.
for the person who wanted to drag the war into this conversation, let's go back a few years....the reason this economy is in the toilet is due to the forced down their throats bad loans that banks gave out so that EVERY one could own a home WHETHER they could afford it or not. And that program did not come from a republican least of all George Bush. And let's also remember that the same problem was defended by you democrats little darling Barney Frank and Chris Dodd to name just a couple.....
So save your 'blame it on the war' for another topic.
Rush L. is the leading idiot and hate monger in this country - just ask him. Republicans need to get over it, or get out of the way, or quit, or leave office. With W's refusal to pay for anything he did - two wars, tax cuts for those who don't need it, etc. - we fell behind for the eight years he was in office. If I am not mistaken, the gross domestic product for eight years of W's "leadership" should be about 80 trillion dollars. The point is that eight years in the wrong direction will require at least one year of gross domestic product to correct a course for our country. So stop whining about the federal government's expenditure (equivalent to our expenditure) to revive the economy.
the dem svoted for the war because of bush admin phoney intell
I HOPE HIS SOCIAL EXPERIMENTAL POLICIES FAIL FAIL!!!!!!!. I tell my kids not to follow the Pied Piper as you are doing remember what happened in that Nursery Rhyme. The piper removed the Rats the people thought they had choices wether to pay or not and their kids were lost. Lets see how you will feel when all the jobs and producers leave America and you become the new Rich. How you will feel when you have to pay more than half your wages to pay for all the new social programs.
I know you Will not mind supporting all the slime at the bottom who will think that all your hard earned money belongs to them after all they will be as entitled to yours as you are of the people who earn more than you do now. Yep free Health Care Housing etc. It ain't free ...Get off your Lazy backsides and work ,that is your country was built on.
Stupid Bush gave you free stuff for Senior Health care look what it got you.You Americans need to learn that when you are given something from someone other than family for FREE you become OBLIGATED and ENSLAVED . Work for it and it is yours.
If and when Obama the Twisted gives you FREE Health, Housing and Food he will be able to tell you what treatment ,where and the size of your home and what you can eat.You will have NO choices except the ones he makes for you. That is what Cuba has have you any idea what they are really living with. Why they and the Canadians and Brits with free Health are coming to America for treatment. Why Cubans are willing to die to get to your country.???? Stupid because it is the BEST.
Beware of the "BLUE DOG" democrats! It will be up to the BLUE DOGS to stop President Obama's wasteful spending and poor government policies. His poor policies are the problem, not the solution to our current economic depresson. Socialism and nationalized healthcare are not the answers we are looking for. For those of you who don't know any better, it will be the BLUE DOGS who will rise up and stop the president from destroying our nation. --Chris--
We still have more of a freefall to go. Once GM goes I expect the market to bottom at about 4700 and we'll see 16% unemployment. No offense Mr Obama, money wont be fixing this one. It's called market correction, long overdue.
I've seen a lot more people out and shopping over the past couple of weeks which I think is a good sign that people have more confidence that things will get better since there are people actually trying to fix what is wrong instead of continuing to ignore the problems. I'm happy they actually have a plan to limit the number of foreclosures. The housing market seems to be improving at least in my area. Last summer there were 11 houses in my subdivision within 6 blocks from my house and now there are 2. Of course hte prices of those homes sold for much less but they did sell!
Im glad you are seeing things happen let's hope it continues.
Unfortunately, people will keep buying chinese made products at Wal-Mart!
Buy American!!
The financial problems we are facing are in specific pockets of the country. not everywhere. I live in the Upstate New York area and I see a lot of shopping going on in both food and general merchandise stores.
Our family also travels a lot, this past weekend we were in Virginia Beach and at a restaurant that served a Seafood Buffet at $30. per person seats about 5-600 was so crowded with lines going around the building. Also went to another restaurant in Chesapeake Bay and the same thing. Had to run into Target and the Mall parking lot was so full that there was absolutely no parking. It looked like day after Thanksgiving.
I believe the News Media has blown some of these stories out of proportion. If only 7% of the employable are employed then dosen't that mean that 93% of the employable are still working????.
We still travel ,however we will cut back on our income because we do not want to have extra income to be taken in the form of taxes . So we will only make as much as we need . I as sure that as long as the Government keeps thinking and talking about the " REDISTRIBUTION " of the income of the producers and people who have acted with financial responsibility we will not be the only ones who refuse to work for the Welfare Bums and the ones who feel entitled to our blood sweat and tears
About half of the unemployed is due to the credit boom paying too much for poor employees. in other words Over employed. As soon as this group figures out that they cannot get paid that much for that little, then they will find jobs and balance will be restored. The rest of us need to accept the 10-20% decline in standard of living and go on with life.
We are all in this together and nobody and i mean nobody better be smelling like a rose after this is over because that means they were the cause of the mess.
Sounds like Jimmy Carter is back in office...... Do the President's supporters have any idea of how long it will take to come out of this or so to speak when does it become his problem and not Bush's. Anyone who thinks gov't regulation works is naive. Bad people will and can always find a way around the regulators. The question is how do we change the kind of people we have become. We are following Europe. Europe's families are falling apart and so are ours - just look at Detroit where 80% of the kids do not graduate from high school and 70% don't have a father in the home. How do you create success from that. Oh, is that the environment the current President came out of. I wonder how sucessful he was in Chicago? In the Illinois legislature? In the US Senate? He has done well for "himself" so he will have his day in leadership just like Carter and Bush had. The question is will his policies bring positive results? I remember when gov't funded jobs before and then when the funding dried up the communities couldn't afford to continue the jobs. What will happen in a couple years when we will need another Stimulus and where does the money come from???? Go figure,,,,
I remember when Reagan was in office and we had the trick ON effect! Kind of like we had for the last 8 years!
This mess all started when Reagan started all this deregulation of the airlines, banks, savings and loans and wall street. Say nothing of the union busting he started, and the bringing in immigrants to this country to bust unions. Every time the gop (greedy old pimps) are in office the economy sinks.
No, it's idiots like you that suck...suck the life from those who can and give it to those who can't. But, I digress...responding to drivel from people who can't spell history, much less learn from it, is a frustrating waste of time.
Hold out for four years, then vote for someone who has a little experience, knowledge and more than syrup in his/her voice to offer. Unless, of course, the all-knowing trinity (Pelosi, Reid & BO) has decided the government knows best who can run the country and declared that elections are unnecessary. In which case, it's time again to throw some tea in the harbor.
We need to stop looking for government to be our "Sugar Daddy" and learn to take responsibility for our own actions. Being content to save toward our goals instead of insisting on immediate gratification. I have read that Nikita Kruschev predicted that America would slowly become a communist state. As more and more Americans look to government for solutions to our problems that prophecy is coming to pass.
socialism does not work, we are now also just like 1933 Nazi Germany... very scary....
The key to getting out of this is for the Commander-in Chief and his staff to act like leaders and not political hacks, which is their current mode of operation. To effectively lead a CEO or Commander-in-Chief has to set one or two clear objectives and not throw every problem we have ever had open for discussion. That just confuses everybody. Obama "Its the ECONOMY stupid". If it doesn't get fixed you can forget about healthcare, energy, and all the other items on the to do list. Prioritize and get the big elephant in the room undercontrol.
When a public company gets into trouble a strong CEO leader and his staff show confidence in what they are doing by buying stock in the company. How about Obama instructing his blind trust managers to sell some of his tax free municipals (tax avoidance) and invest $400,000.00 in a stock market index fund. Each cabinet member and congessional leader ought to invest 9 months salary in a similar fund and every member of Congress 6 months pay. Lets get some skin in the game folks and line up with the 90% of us who are in the stock market directly or indirectly (pension funds, 401ks, college funds, etc). Show us you have confidence in what you are doing becuase right now the market has no confidence in you.
Yeah, Codder. Maybe congress will vote themselves another raise, so they can do that!
The economy is a coffin and Obama is taxing us to buy more nails. How do you like your change now?
Interesting - you must be one of those people that make over $250,000 a year.
If you are not making $250,000 a year, be happy you finally have a President thinking about your wallet rather than Wall Streets.
Believe me! I don't think he makes $250,000.00 a year. If he does he needs to spend it on education!
Obama's plan is to enact stiff taxes onto those earning over $250,000 a year and spend, spend, spend. Very soon the resulting inflation will lead to everyone paying stiff taxes. It should not be a shock to see most everyone earning over 250k soon. The good news is owing too much on a mortgage will soon correct itself.
Sadly people earning over $250,000 will be penalized first but as the income levels start dropping people like ECOLARADO who believes that Obama is looking out for them and others will be in Obamas sights. Apparently these people convinced by the Divisive Obama are being conditioned to believe they are entitled to what these people work for or that for another to make money it means they had to be stepped on or stolen from.
The people who were earning 100 million in 2008 will be earning 50mill. and it will be way fewer of them in that bracket. Also if they earned $250k in 08 then in 2010 they may earn less say only $200k the tax band will widen .As income continues to scale back either because people choose to as not to pay taxes or a soft job market ,Obama and all his promises will need more money.
The entitlement attitude that is permeating the country is going to lead to Socialism... People who earn $40k and envy the person who earns $100k do not realize that to the person who earns only $20k they the $40k are rich. So when they think of how rich the $250k person is and how they should pay remember that there is someone behind you thinking the same greedy, thieving ,entitlement thoughts of your income.
If the $250k is taxed more will it benefit you???Bringing them down a notch or two will help you how? They will go out to eat less ,spend less and businesses will fail and more people will become unemployed. The people in the State of New York are starting to realize that taxing the rich is not the solution as those people have the resources to retire or relocate. Plus the Demonised Wall Street Fat Cats and their employees were responsible for 40-50% of New York States income.. Many of these people have moved to other states or out of the country to find jobs without the $500,000 cap. So who is NY going to tax???
It is so nice of Lord Obama to take the high road as he eats $100.00 per pound Japanese beef and admonishes the Wallstreeters about their excesses. But when they ate Black Angus Steaks from the local Caterers ,when they paid the bill it trickled down the economy. The caterers bought more food from the farmers Upstate, they paid their employees who shopped in NYC businesses for goods and services who then paid their people who went on trips bought gifts paid bills and on it went. Now the Caterers ,Farmers and retailers are closing. Thanks Obama....CHANGE we can believe in when we see all the businesses closing and laying off
NYC is finally getting an upfront and firsthand view of what "TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS" is all about. Many claimed it does not work but I guess "Seeing is truly believing"
Based on the blame-game being played by some of the previous commentors, I see dwindling hope of a recovery in the near future. Whoever referenced the "pigs at the trough" hit the nail on the head - the average investor/citizen has no confidence in a stock market with no real regulation (a bipartisan effort there); I - like many "average folk", won't invest a dime as long as I can't be sure it's going back to the latest Haliburton/Exxon/Multi-National human exploitation machine. Thanks, Bernie Madoff and friends.
Gene Your comments just go to show how miss informed that you are. In fact i would venture that you have no idea what Halliburton or for that matter Exon/Mobil does. Your comments about them are nothing more than a democratic talking point. I do think that you should keep your money under your mattress and your head in the sand. Oboma the wonderful will give you a pat on the back as long as you do not question his policy because if you do question it then it will be up to the democratic machine to squash you so buck up gene it could be worse dang he could be re-elected how far feched is that
Gene-944966
In case you did not know Haliburton is no longer an American company ,they saw the writing on the wall Libs taking over, 2 years ago and left . Their HQ is in Dubai. America is a good customer but it was not the largest or most important. There are only a few ,like maybe 3 companies that are capable of doing what they do. So Obama making his speech about no bids was for the uninformed.
As for Exxon again they could move from the US at any time remember when Obama announced that should he win he was going to tax them they immediately started selling off their convenience stores again anticipating the taxation or Nationalizing of their assets. Exxon in the grand picture are a tiny company. American gas/fuel purchases , consumption and regulatory policies are slowly making it a non entity in the business. You USE to be a player now The Arab,Asian markets are much more lucrative. You are because of misguided and ignorant environmental policies restricting exploration and production of oil. I believe with growing demand for their skills and product elsewhere it is foreseeable that they could leave America. As for the gas priceing your Government takes a large chunk in taxes what did you or the Government risk or do to earn that tax? did you hire explore or drill ?Did you or the Government refine all you know is that it is at the pump and you put it into your tank with no idea how or what risks were involved between surveying and final delivery to your station. I would suggest you study that before you condem their efforts. Prices are down now and Oil companiesare may be experienceing difficulties ....do you care??? I bet not but because the News Media and politicians have you whipped up into a frenzy you believe they are so evil.
Bernie Madoff has no relationship to either company in case you also never heard he never bought any stocks. It is not the market that people have lost confidence in but the managing staff of the companies that are members of the market. CEO's for companies like Fannie ,Freddie AIG and Citi Group along with many of the politicians Barnie Frank ,Dodd, were busy with their hands in the cookie jar they should be in jail. Bernie Madoff is pleading guilty... However because of the crooked coupling of the politicians and the Financial giants none of these people will see a day in jail.
GM and Chrysler too stupid to cut their losses and file for Chapter 11 were forced by the Government/ Environmentalists to produce cars that their markets did not want. They are known for solid prestigious automobiles and brands. In an effort to compete with the Koreans or Japanese they lost their way. Japaneese and Koreans build tiny little cars. Amazingly GM International is the only thing keeping the company alive... The Hummer is a huge seller outside of the USA. also the Ford F series all models, the Excursion and the larger Chrysler SUV's While you get excited about the Toyota brands the rest of the World is snapping up your signature vehicles can you blame these companies if they leave and go where they are wanted or less restricted. WE go to Kentucky Fried Chicken for..... Chicken and McDonald's for ...Burgers.It is called a choice.
Taking from the rich and giving to the poor is a bad way to stimulate the economy. Who do you think supplies all the jobs in this country??? We are headed for a deep depression worse than the 1930's...get ready!!!
After 8 years of the "Bush" tax cuts to the weatlthy and corporations and the 11.1 trillion dollars spent by Bush and his neo con rubber stamp Congress. What jobs are you talking about?
Bush did not tell of those people that had no business buying a home and maxing out their credit cards to do so. Bush did not instititue the CRA and subprime mortgage, each one a primary contributor to the housing market crash.
The CRA and subprime introduced and pressed by the democrats. Several times the Republicans attempted to head off the effects of these two items, only to be rebuffed by democrats on all attempts!
Blaming the past administration is rhetoric that is for the campaign trail. The election is over and has been for months. All presidents get a honeymoon period. Carter and both Bush's had higher approval ratings then Obama at the same point in their first terms. When the liberals are in the unemployment lines and get tired of his excuses that he inherited this mess he will implode like Carter. He didn't inherit anything. The nation was in economic crises when he was running for office. He applied for the job and said he could fix it. That’s why he was elected and that's why he better enjoy his first and only term in office.
I wont defend the CRA but from what I've studied on the problem its not the CRA loans that are the biggest problem,( at least not before the unemployment started spiking.) It was the hundred of thousands of liar loans the banks and others gave to anyone with a pulse, no need to check their employment records or status or credit history even on most of them. ohh and I can't forget no need for a down payment either.
The people couldn't afford the loans (at a proper interest rate), and would keep refinancing as their home went up in value making it even worse for them. Now it seems we are going to bail them out.
Giving money to someone without even doing a income and credit check was stupid ( note a credit check is a history not just the lame fico score that anyone can minipulate within a range nd a couple months work) . It always has and will be stupid.
The housing bailout is a joke, as they are trying to stop "forclosures ", in all reality if you listen to thier justification for it they reall just want to "prop up or stop declining home values". I'm sorry but when i purchased my home it was/is a home not a piggy-bank, or investment. So I dont care what the "Cash Value" of it is.
The only tried and true way to get us out of the housing mess is to slow down the job losses, and to stimulate buying. To which it seems they have very little real interest in stimulating buying, so I expect housing market to be horrible for a long time to come.
Most of the banks lent the money out of fear Obama in his Community Activist days was the lead Atty. that sued HSBC and City Bank to allow Minorities to own homes in problem areas of Illinois. Demonstartaions were threatened and organized at various branches in suburban areas Bank managers were attacked , their families ,homes children's schools were picketed and the Racist tag was tossed around .It worked and then the Latino groups in Florida and California got wind of it and there the same situation was repeated.
Obama and the other Activists claimed it was unfair to ask all the Questions of the housing applicants who were classified as Minorities.Credit checks were not to be done as the home purchase was the 1st. rung on their ladder to rebuilding and teaching them about financial responsibility. He felt that it was the Banks responsibility to the Community and their losses if any would be offset by the higher fees they could charge their Prime customers. Many Americans do not realize that home inspections for these folks were not even done because after all it was intrusive LMAO.In some case the home /property address was bogus. So when you hear that Obama is only the President for 50 days he has no idea what he was inheriting it is a scream as the minority underground knows what he knows and did and they know that he will keep screwing you so they will get .Your News media knows all this but I guess it is not too important for you to know any of this. In the mean time we will all be ignorant and blame the greedy bankers
Many Illegals were also approved for loans ,using your stolen information. The scam was to get a home sign up to buy it pay the first month mortgage then skip a couple then the bank woulds send a letter saying you were 60 days past due. you would not respond.30 days later another letter ,you go to the community activist aid lawyer and he writes a letter LOL then you still do not pay by this time it is 6months rent free. The Bank then starts the foreclosure process after 7 months you are served ,you go back to the Community Activist/ Legal aid and as the letter says you have 30-45 days to bring it current. Almost 9 months then it goes to court and your Activist spins a yarn for and the Judge gives more time . When it is over and done and they move out the home is stripped of all doors, sinks cupboards, pipes ,all ornamentation and built ins.It is destroyed and in some cases and areas when the banks realized and to save the homes from being totally striped or too badly damaged the Banks were paying some folks to leave. Banks are not in the Real Estate business so when the homes became vacant the banks rather than try to fix them they were sold as is . The Banks lost thousands,a home thatm was originally $100k was now just a shell worth $5-15 depending on the area and the extent of the damage. Not only did they loose the mortgage for a year but they lost the expected value of the house.
These people had found out that the fear of being branded a Racist will make spineless White people/business quake in fear and guilt and as a result will give them anything including a nice home to live for 12 months rent free....It was more advantageous to buy because if you rented the Land lord would require 2 months security and 1st and last months rent and if you were 1 months late he would be there to collect and after 60 days eviction would start. So you knew go to a bank and make sure it is a large Bank not the local one who would know the area after all the big bank like Citi that did not have a Branch nearby or even in another City or State is not going to send an officer to harras you.
By the way after they move unlike you who would be devastated ,they just buy a new identity maybe your new social security number and the cycle continues.

Not "quite near" the bottom. Another 6 months of continuing job losses, a bit over 10 to 11% unemployed, before growth again. Unless Obama
